The plan, first reported by The Times, is understood to be a variation of an existing voluntary returns scheme, where failed asylum seekers receive cash to return to their home country.

It will be open to anyone whose asylum claim has been rejected by the UK.


In particular it is aimed at those who cannot return to their home countries.

The government is already trying to implement a separate scheme under which people deemed to have arrived illegally in the UK would be deported to Rwanda.

That plan had been blocked by the courts, which raised concerns about Rwanda's safety.

In order to overcome those objections, the government is currently trying to pass its Safety of Rwanda Bill, which would deem the East African country to be a safe place.

The BBC has been told that, unlike that scheme, this new arrangement would be voluntary and therefore not dependent on the bill being approved by Parliament.

A Home Office spokesman said voluntary returns were "an important part of our efforts to tackle illegal migration".

"We are exploring voluntary relocations for those who have no right to be here to Rwanda, who stand ready to accept people who wish to rebuild their lives and cannot stay in the UK," they added.

Failed asylum seekers who choose to be relocated would be allowed to legally work in the country, unlike in the UK. They would also get additional support upon arrival in Rwanda.

The scheme will also be opened up to other people with no right to remain in the UK, and foreign criminals.

There is no date for when the first people would be relocated under the scheme, and no set figure on the number of people who may choose to take part in it.


'No Chance'

According to official statistics, 19,253 people were voluntarily removed from the UK last year. Of these, 3,319 received a "reintegration package" or flights paid by the Home Office - the highest number since 2010.

The Home Office says payments under the current scheme "can pay for" temporary accommodation in the destination country, or education costs, or the cost of setting up a business.

Responding to the government's latest announcement, Labour's shadow immigration minister Stephen Kinnock said: "Even government ministers are finally recognising that their Rwanda scheme has no chance of succeeding, so they're resorting to paying people to go there instead."

He said Rwanda had "very limited capacity" for accepting people and that the government should "make clear how many people they expect to send on this basis, and what the cost will be.




"There have been so many confused briefings around the Rwanda policy that the public will be forgiven for treating this latest wheeze with a degree of scepticism."

TRUMP tried to single-handedly suspend asylum in between ports of entry along the southern border through a proclamation in 2018, using a law House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans have urged Mr. Biden to invoke.

TRUMP made this clear when he urged Republicans in Congress to turn against the bipartisan Senate Border Security Bill so that he could keep the issue alive through the presidential election, and claim credit for it when he became president again. Some of his supporters fell in line.



The Bill, in Brief

The $118 billion bill, called the Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, sought significant changes in border policy. It included money to build more border barriers, to greatly expand detention facilities, and to hire more Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents, asylum officers and immigration judges to reduce the years-long backlog in cases to determine asylum eligibility.

It sought to expedite the asylum process, essentially ending — in most cases — the so-called “catch and release” policy whereby migrants are released into the U.S. pending asylum hearings. And it would have increased the standard of evidence needed to win asylum status.

The bill also would have supplied more funding to interdict fentanyl and human trafficking

“It doesn’t have everything in it I wanted, it doesn’t have everything it it my Democratic colleagues wanted,” one of the architects of the bill, Republican Sen. James Lankford, said from the Senate floor before the vote was taken. “But it definitely makes a difference.”

In the lead-up to the vote, Lankford accused his Republican colleagues of opposing the bill on political, rather than policy, grounds.

French authorities have been increasingly accused of a soft-touch approach, fuelled by photographs showing officers standing by as heavily-laden boats enter the Channel.


But they have been told to significantly ramp up their efforts after five migrants - including a seven-year-old girl - were killed after a rival group armed with sticks and knives stormed their dinghy on Tuesday.

'It's an impossible task - there are just too many boats now. It's like playing whack-a-mole. You stop one boat and then another arrives,' an officer told the Sun.




However, despite attempts to stop the boat by slashing it open, the police ultimately failed, when another dinghy arrived just 15 minutes later.

The migrants, who were mainly from Sudan and Vietnam, hopped into the new vessel after breaking through police lines and managing to push off to sea before cops could stop them.

British and Irish ministers are set to meet as tensions grow over the UK's policy on migrants.

The Irish government says it's seeing an influx of asylum seekers coming from Northern Ireland because they are "fearful" of being sent to Rwanda.

And it says it will not allow Ireland to provide a "loophole" for anybody else's "migration challenges".

But the UK says it will not take them back unless the EU changes its position on returning migrants to France.

Talks between the UK home secretary and Irish justice minister were due to take place on Monday, but were postponed late on Sunday without explanation.

However, ministers are due to gather in London for a scheduled meeting of the British-Irish Intergovernmental Conference.

Ireland has said 80% of recent asylum seekers arrived from Northern Ireland.



Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has argued that any increased flow of people into Ireland shows that the Rwanda asylum policy, which became law last week, is already working as a deterrent.

On Sunday, Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Simon Harris said he would not "allow anybody else's migration policy to affect the integrity of our own one".

He said he had asked Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee to bring legislation to cabinet on Tuesday that would enable asylum seekers to be sent back to the UK.

The planned legislation follows an Irish High Court ruling that Ireland could not designate the UK a "safe third country" and return asylum seekers because of the threat they would be sent to Rwanda.

However, a UK government source said the UK would not accept "any asylum returns from the EU via Ireland until the EU accepts that we can send them back to France."

Many of those entering the UK illegally in recent years have arrived via crossings in small boats from France. In 2023, a total of 29,437 people entered the UK through this route.

The source added that the government was "fully focussed on operationalising our Rwanda scheme and will continue working with the French to stop the boats from crossing the Channel".

Monday's meeting of the Intergovernmental Conference, which was established under the Good Friday Agreement and has met regularly since, will be co-chaired by Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris and Irish foreign minister Micheal Martin.

Late on Sunday, it was announced that a meeting between Home Secretary James Cleverly and Ms McEntee was not going ahead.

The Irish Department of Justice said the meeting would be "rescheduled in the near future", though no further details were given.

Ms McEntee had said earlier that she planned to raise migration with Mr Cleverly.

Under the Rwanda policy, anyone arriving in the UK illegally will be deported to the east African country and given the option to claim asylum there.

The plan was approved by Parliament on Thursday after months of political wrangling and legal challenges. The government has said it plans to have the first flights take off within 10 to 12 weeks.

Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, Mr Sunak was asked whether the concerns raised by the Irish government suggested that the UK was "exporting the problem".

"The deterrent is - according to your comment - already having an impact," he said.

"People are worried about coming here and that demonstrates exactly what I'm saying: if people come to our country illegally, but know that they won't be able to stay, they're much less likely to come."

The Home Office confirmed late on Sunday that migrants would start to be detained in the coming weeks in preparation for the first flights to Rwanda.

It came after the Guardian reported that the detentions were set to begin on Monday.

The first migrants set to be deported to Rwanda have been detained.


The Home Office said a series of operations took place across the country this week, with more activity due to be carried out in the coming weeks.


Officials have not yet said how many people have been detained, or where they were taken into custody.

Women are understood to be among those detained by Home Office enforcement officers in a series of raids this week after being picked to be sent to Rwanda.

Department officials refused to say how many people had been held so far, arguing that ongoing operations prevented them from doing so. They confirmed more than two people had been detained, with both men and women in custody.

It comes ahead of the Government's bid to get flights to send migrants to the east African nation off the ground by July, after the Safety of Rwanda Act became law last week.

Enforcement action is said to have taken place throughout the UK - in England, Wales and Scotland as well as Northern Ireland - since midday on Monday.

Children are not expected to be detained as part of the operations

In one video, a team of about six officials – all thought to be from the Home Office's Immigration Enforcement unit – arrive at a terraced house and enter through the front door.

It is not known at this stage how many people have been held in total.

Downing Street said: 'The next stage of Prime Minister's plan to stop the boats has begun.

'We're working at home and abroad to deliver on this priority.'

Irish authorities launched an operation to move asylum seekers who created a 'tent city' on Mount Street in central Dublin amid an ongoing row with the British government over immigration.


Hundreds of migrants have been sleeping rough beside the city's International Protection Office, setting up makeshift accommodation around the building that snakes off down nearby streets.

A slew of videos circulating on social media showed how officers in hi-vis this morning bundled up tents as the migrants filed onto a string of coaches dispatched to Mount Street.

A truck-mounted crane was even deployed to tear the canvas structures away from the pavement and deposit them into a skip - or pull them into the street where officers could squirrel them away.

The migrants meanwhile were split between Dublin's Citywest hotel and at a sitein Crooksling, where authorities had erected hardy makeshift accommodation with proper toilets and sanitation facilities.

Around 1,700 asylum seekers are believed to be living on the streets in Ireland after crossing the border from Northern Ireland, with some expressing their fear that they could be sent to Rwanda by the UK government if they had stayed.

BBC Tracks Down Smuggler Behind English Channel Crossing Which Killed girl, 7

It was a confrontation that marked the culmination of a BBC investigation that had begun 51 days earlier - hours after five people, including a seven-year-old girl named Sara, had died in the sea off northern France.

She had suffocated beneath a crush of bodies inside an inflatable boat.

As he ambled, nonchalantly, across a sunlit public square, the smuggler appeared to have no idea he was being followed. The 'Mountains’ real name was Rebwar Abas Zangana, a Kurdish man from northern Iraq.





He was a short, stocky, 39-year-old in a pale green shell suit and baseball cap - an unremarkable figure taking an afternoon stroll from a tented migrant reception centre to a nearby tram station.

Our team broke into a run.

“We know who you are,” I said, as we caught up with him halfway across the square in Luxembourg’s capital city.

“You’re a smuggler.”

That investigation had taken us from the informal migrant camps around Calais and Boulogne, to a French police unit in Lille, to a market town in Essex, to the Belgian port of Antwerp, Berlin, and finally to Luxembourg and a three-day stakeout at the gates of the country’s migrant reception centre.

The man now facing us - eyes narrowed, shoulders and hands raised in a half-shrug - was, we knew for sure, the smuggler who had been paid to organise Sara and her family’s dangerous voyage to England.

This is the story of how we tracked him down.

“I swear it’s not me,” the smuggler declared, repeatedly, backing towards a nearby tram station beside Luxembourg’s European Court of Justice.

But we had already seen his Iraqi passport and an Italian identity card. Moments after we began to confront him, a final piece of the jigsaw slotted into place, when his phone began ringing in his pocket.

At first, he ignored it, but when he finally pulled it out and we saw the incoming call number on his screen, we had conclusive proof of his guilt.

Why? Because we were the ones ringing him.

In the previous weeks, a member of our BBC team had been posing as a migrant seeking to cross the Channel to England. After reaching out to several alleged middlemen working within the smuggler’s wider network, our colleague, “Mahmoud”, had finally been put in direct contact with him.

We had then secretly recorded several phone conversations with the smuggler - speaking to him on the same phone he was now holding in his hand. In those calls he had confirmed his identity and told us he was still in the smuggling business.

For a fee, he said he could offer us “an easy journey” with “extra guards, all carrying weapons” in the next small boat leaving northern France. The current price was €1,500 (£1,269) per person.

As we stood before him now, we could see our telephone number, clearly, on his phone’s screen.

We had found our man.

Our investigation had been prompted by the experience of watching a desperate incident unfold on the French coast on 23 April.

We had been waiting, overnight, on a beach outside the resort town of Wimereux - a place we knew was a favourite launch site.

We had filmed as a group of French police had sought to intercept a boat, clashing violently with two groups of smugglers and their passengers.

The police failed to stop them from boarding and we watched the chaos as the two separate passenger groups battled for space on the dangerously overcrowded inflatable. Smugglers routinely pack more than 60 people on to such boats, but this one had more than 100.

A small girl in a pink jacket - later identified as Sara - was briefly visible on her father’s shoulders.

Minutes later, a few dozen metres from the shore, she and four others were dead.

Some survivors, and the bodies of the dead, were taken back to shore by French rescuers - but the boat, with dozens of people still onboard, eventually continued on to England.

It was the second fatal small boat incident of the year near Wimereux. We had now reported on both.

In the days that followed, we found Sara’s family and spoke to her father Ahmed about his grief, about the guilt he and his wife felt for putting their three children at such risk, and about the fear of imminent deportation from Europe that drove his decision to attempt a crossing to the UK.

After fleeing from Iraq 14 years earlier, Ahmed’s asylum claim in Belgium had been repeatedly rejected on the grounds that his hometown of Basra was now classified as a safe area. He had recently been warned he could be deported from Belgium within days. His children - all born in Europe - had grown up living with relatives in Sweden, but had also just been given a final order to leave the country.

But we also wanted to dig deeper, to find the specific criminal gangs responsible for that boat, and to understand how they fitted into a larger, lucrative network that continued to funnel tens of thousands of migrants towards a small stretch of French coastline.

On 18 June, 15 small boats brought 882 people across the Channel - a record for a single day this year, which helped to edge the total number reaching the UK so far this year well over 12,000.

Following Sara’s death, British police soon announced they had detained two suspected smugglers who are now awaiting extradition to France. But these were young men, allegedly working on the boat itself. Not the powerful bosses in charge behind the scenes.

We set out to find and speak to as many survivors from that April night as possible, meeting some in the informal migrant camps or hostels for asylum seekers near the coast in France. Most of them asked us not to use their names, not least because some were planning to make further attempts at crossing the Channel.

A young Kuwaiti man, who had been next to Sara as she died and had phoned the French police to ask for help, successfully made it to the UK a few weeks later. We tracked him down to Essex.

Many of the dozens of people who boarded the boat with Sara and her family knew nothing about those in charge of the operation. They had spoken only to relatively junior middlemen who can often be found outside the train stations in Calais or Boulogne, looking for potential clients.

Once a price had been agreed - and there was seldom much haggling - most people then went on to deposit funds electronically with intermediaries. They told us these were usually trusted businessmen, sometimes operating from barber's shops or grocery stores in places like Turkey, Paris or London. The middlemen would then pass the money on to the smuggling gang immediately after a successful crossing.

But three people - including two who had been on the same boat as Sara - told us the smuggling gang they had dealt with was operating out of the Belgian port of Antwerp, a city known for its criminal networks and illegal drugs trade. They also agreed that the gang was led by a man nicknamed Jabal - “The Mountain” in Arabic. Two of them had met Jabal in person. One had spoken by phone.

The trail also took us further east to Berlin, where another source confirmed Jabal’s identity and told us he had promised him a second crossing attempt, after a first one had gone wrong.

All our sources, by this point, were telling us that The Mountain was in Belgium, probably Antwerp.

We arrived in Antwerp in May and began working on a plan to locate and confront The Mountain. One of his previous clients had shared a photograph, and another source had provided us with a copy of his Iraqi passport and a European identity card that appeared to have been issued in 2021 in a remote Italian hill town where investigations are under way into organised crime.

We discovered that The Mountain’s real name was Rebwar Abas Zangana, a Kurdish man from northern Iraq. Unmarried. Apparently a devout Muslim. A migrant himself - with an unclear immigration status - who was known to have been living recently in Calais, Brussels, and Antwerp. We were told he worked with two partners and that there might be an even more senior figure back in Iraq.


Mahmoud - our Arabic-speaking colleague posing as a migrant seeking a route to the UK - met a middleman in a barber’s shop in Antwerp, who confirmed that he knew The Mountain and would arrange for him to call us.

We waited nearly two weeks for that call, but eventually, late one night, our phone rang.

“Hello. So you want to get to Britain? How many seats do you need? Are you ready?”

The Mountain spoke in short, curt sentences. On that call, and two subsequent phone conversations, he confirmed that he was still very much in business, assuring us that the trip across the Channel was “a safe job”, and that he had refined his tactics since Sara’s death.

“How many of you are ready?” he asked, adding that the weather in Calais wasn’t good enough for a crossing the next day.

But hours after that first call to us, we learned from a source that The Mountain had recently left Antwerp in a hurry. The implication was that he feared arrest for his role in the five deaths in April. The Mountain was on the run.

We drove there immediately.

Luxembourg is a small country. Its primary reception centre for refugees and migrants is in the capital’s modern administrative centre. Why would The Mountain come here? Perhaps he simply hoped to lie low for a while, or to apply for asylum under a new name.

But how to be sure he was even here? We couldn’t simply wander in. The compound was closed to the general public, with a single entry/exit point guarded by at least four private security guards.

The Mountain was here.

But how to lure him out without causing suspicion? If he fled again and we missed him, we would be back to square one.

The only option was a stakeout.

And so, for three days, our team kept watch, monitoring the compound’s entrance, and peering from a higher vantage point that overlooked the centre, giving us a view inside.

Finally, at just before 15:00 on the third day, we spotted The Mountain walking out with a group of other migrants. He turned left, heading towards the tram station. We broke into a run.

In the aftermath of our confrontation, we told the French police - who are leading the investigation into the deaths in April - about our findings. They said they would not be commenting at this stage.

The UK is spending half a billion pounds over three years to support efforts by French police to secure its coastline and to track and disrupt the people smuggling networks across Europe.




Today, Sara’s surviving family - her father Ahmed, mother Nour, 12-year-old sister Rahaf and nine-year-old brother, Hussam - are staying at a temporary hostel for migrants in a tiny village outside the northern French city of Lille.


The children have no access to school, and no right to remain in France beyond the autumn.

“I want a normal life, like everybody. I’m missing out so much. I want to go to school in England because I have my cousin there. She is my age. I miss… my friends,” Rahaf told us, before sobbing.

Dozens of illegal migrants on the Belarusian side of the border with Poland hurled a volley of makeshift spears at Polish border guards through the five-metre-high steel fence.



Some fell short of their targets and as the security forces picked them up they saw what appeared to be a tree branch with a steel blade taped to the top. The attack came shortly before dawn.

Several were injured in the bombardment and one - Sgt Mateusz Sitek, a 21-year-old from the village of Nowy Lubiel - lost his life.

They may be incredibly crude, but the weapons show a new level of organisation and intent from the waves of migrants arriving at the gates of the EU through Belarus.

They are moving with the quiet helping hand of Russia, Polish officials believe, the latest axis in Vladimir Putin’s asymmetric hybrid war with the West.

Russia has long waged hybrid warfare on Europe’s doorstep with a combination of cyber attacks and disinformation.

It began weaponising migration three years ago, working with travel agents in the Middle East to encourage migrants to visit with the promise of a gateway to the EU.





The death of Sgt Sitek is emblematic of how things have dramatically escalated.




“He was a very, very good boy,” one person told The Telegraph at his funeral in a small church where friends, family and the Polish president gathered to pay their respects.

Amid the kind words and reflections, though, one message cut through: this was a needless death.

As well as training and controlling increasingly violent migration flows into Poland, Russia has also upped its destabilising techniques elsewhere along its border with Europe.

On the Finnish-Russian border, Russia has been handing out bicycles and foot-scooters to migrants to help them cross over.


These migrants are increasingly controlled by private Wagner-like Russian militias.

Sgt Mateusz Sitek EU Border Guard is Killed by Spear-Throwing Migrants











A young Polish border guard was killed by a makeshift spear hurled at him from the Belarusian side of the border, it has been revealed, in what is being characterised as the latest example of Vladimir Putin's "hybrid war" on the West.


Sgt Mateusz Sitek, from the village of Nowy Lubiel died after several projectiles were hurled through a five-metre high steel fence, with several of his colleagues also injured.

A shocking clip circulating online shows another incident in which a similar spear flies through a fence, missing another border guard by inches.

Polish officials, who believe migrants are being sent to their border from its Russia-allied neighbour with the tacit encouragement of Vladimir Putin as a way of weaponising the situation.





Earlier this week, Polish Defence Minister Wadysaw Kosiniak-Kamysz warned: "There is a hybrid war ongoing on the Poland-Belarus border."

Mr Sitek died on May 28 in an early-morning attack. Speaking at his funeral, attended by among others Poland's President Andzrej Duda, one person told The Daily Telegraph the 21-year-old was "a very, very good boy".

Since April this year, 370 police officers have stopped at least 537 people trying to cross the border illegally, said Pawel Zabrocki, chief of police in the town of Hajnowka.

People have descended on the streets of Leeds for a second night in a row demanding the children who were taken away by police yesterday be returned to their parents.

This comes as the father of the children claims he is on 'hunger strike' until they are returned to his family.




Riots in the Hare Hill area of Leeds allegedly began last night after social services in the city removed all four children from a family.

Tonight, hundreds of locals have descended onto the streets once again. This time in much more peaceful demonstrations.

In videos shared widely on social media, members of the public can be heard chanting 'please bring the kids back' - in reference to the children taken by social services yesterday.





Meanwhile, harrowing video footage showed a police officer hauling a young boy out of a house and bundling him into a van.



Witnesses said the removal of the child was the flashpoint which kicked off the rioting last night, with the disorder lasting for hours.

Photos from today show tensions rising in the city as locals appeared to argue with police while surrounded by a scene of chaos from the night before.

Families looked on at the immense clean up taking place to clear away the smouldering wreckage of a bus set alight in Harehills.

The intensity of the violence was deemed so severe that firefighters refused to enter the street for hours amid fears crews would be attacked.

The Home Office has confirmed that a British Border Force vessel which was assisting with a French search and rescue operation has returned migrants to France for the first time.


One migrant died and a further 71 were rescued after their boat deflated in the English Channel on Wednesday, the French coastguard has said.

Patrols off the coast of Gravelines in northern France saw people in the water, sparking a rescue operation aided by the British Border Force and RNLI.

During a press conference on Thursday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said there had been “no change of policy” and taking people back to Calais had been “an operational decision for those that are carrying out the exercise”.

The maritime prefecture in France said 59 people were brought on board the French ship Cormoran, including an unconscious person who could not be resuscitated by the medical team.

A British vessel, the Border Force Ranger, also saved 13 people from the water, and both ships took the group of people to Calais.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said: "A Border Force vessel was sent to support French vessels in the operation, co-ordinated by French authorities."

Tom Pursglove, the former illegal immigration minister, said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter: "The credit for this must go to Michael Tomlinson and James Cleverly who did so much in just a few months to drive this ops initiative."

Far-right promises to turn up at immigration centres at 8pm vanished into thin air. The hate mobs were seemingly cowed by a swell of anti-racist protesters who turned out in force in cities across the UK - and by drizzly weather that hit southern parts of England on Wednesday night.

Undeterred, red-faced would-be protesters have taken to social media to row back on their claims - and now claim there was never a plan to target refugee centres in order to waste police time.

Thousands of anti-racist protesters have outnumbered far-right antagonists on the streets of Britain in a show of love over hate - as those behind gatherings targeting immigration centres tried to backpedal on the gatherings ever being planned.

Around 100 hate-fuelled protests were planned across the country tonight, many of which were planned in now-deleted far-right groups on apps such as Telegram, with police deployed in their biggest mobilisation of resources since the 2011 riots.

Thugs had been using now-banned channels on the app to threaten the lives of anti-racism campaigners, make sick slurs and exchange tips on how to 'hood up'. But their promises to turn up at immigration centres at 8pm vanished into thin air.

The hate mobs were seemingly cowed by a swell of up to 25,000 anti-racist activists who turned out in force in cities across the UK - and by drizzly weather that hit southern parts of England on Wednesday night.

Counter-protesters turned out in their thousands in several UK cities - outnumbering 'anti-immigration' protesters when they bothered to turn up - in order to send the clear message that Britain does not welcome hate.

Undeterred, red-faced would-be protesters have taken to social media to row back on their claims - and now claim there was never a plan to target refugee centres in order to waste police time.

But the Telegram group responsible for sharing an alleged hit list of refugee centres for thugs to target was taken down by the typically immovable team behind the encrypted messaging app - who said it breached their rules on inciting violence.

The demos came as scores of arrests and dozens of convictions were sealed in rapid time, following more than a week of unrest after three young girls were killed at a dance class in Southport on 29 July.


Police have also vowed to go after those sharing hate and inciting unrest online as:

GP and hospital appointments are cancelled while pubs and shops board up;
Protesters are hauled before the courts once again with 140 now charged;
Police forces across England mobilise 6,000 riot officers amid more protests;
A pubgoer attacked by a masked mob of Muslims in Birmingham suffered a torn liver
Footfall has dropped in UK high streets after shops were torched in the riots.






Bottles were thrown at police and objects dragged into the road after around 50 people gathered in the south London borough - but officers said it was 'pure anti-social behaviour' not linked to the protests.

Smaller groups of anti-racism protesters were gathered in backstreets in Sheffield, away from the main counter-demo.

One woman, whose face was obscured, said: ‘We’ve done a good job of scaring them away.’

In Accrington, pubgoers were seen embracing a group of Muslims walking past shortly before dusk fell. But the tension soon mounted as protesters holding ‘Stand Up To Racism’ placards faced off with a group chanting ‘stop the boats’.

Dozens of police rushed in to stop them getting close as they marched towards each other.

And around 200 counter-protesters gathered outside an immigration lawyer's office in Oldham as far-right agitators failed to turn up.

Four police riot vans guarded the area on the outskirts of the Greater Manchester town ahead of the proposed 8pm far-right protests.

Taxi driver Ali Shah, 43, said: 'It doesn't look like the far right are going to show. Maybe they've been put off by how many people are here.'

More than 1,000 people have been arrested so far over the disorder, with some 480 charged and at least 99 sentences handed down as cases continue to be brought to court.


Two men have received the longest prison sentences yet in relation to rioting that erupted in parts of England and Northern Ireland after the Southport stabbings.






Honey, 25, also looted shops including the cosmetic store Lush, and received a sentence of four years and eight months.



David Wilkinson, 48, who was jailed for six years, and John Honey were part of a "baying mob" who attacked a car containing three Romanian men in Hull on 3 August.

Spotting the car as they marched down the street in Hull, a "baying mob" surrounded it and began to attack, attempting to drag the men from inside.

Hull Crown Court heard how Honey pulled the passenger door open as the man inside tried to close it to protect himself, while Wilkinson was seen damaging the windscreen of the car, which was left with £1,500 of damage.

The men, in fear of their lives, eventually left the car with their hands raised, before fleeing to a nearby hotel, the court was told.

Passing sentence, Judge John Thackray KC said the scenes on 3 August were "12 hours of racist, hate-fuelled mob violence".

He said both Wilkinson and Honey had intended to create a high risk of injury, and that watching footage of the riots had been “depressing” and “horrifying".

Wilkinson also took part in an attack on a garage in which nine cars were damaged.

He tried to set fire to a bin on top of a pile of tyres that were already alight, sending plumes of black smoke through the shutters of the workshop where people were sheltering.

Wilkinson pleaded guilty to taking part in violent disorder, racially/religiously aggravated criminal damage and attempted arson.

Honey, who also took part in the garage attack, pleaded guilty to violent disorder, racially aggravated criminal damage and three charges of burglary at Lush, an O2 store and Shoezone.

His behaviour during the unrest was "appalling, shameless and violent,” Michael Quinn, deputy chief crown prosecutor of CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, said.




More Rioters Jailed Across England

Also jailed on Friday was Roger Haywood, 41, who was described as a "leader and instigator" of rioting in Blackpool.

Haywood pleaded guilty to violent disorder and two offences of assaulting an emergency worker and was jailed for two-and-a-half years at Preston Crown Court.

Lancashire Police said Haywood hurled abuse at police officers and attacked a member of the Hounds Hill shopping centre security team after attempting to break through the shutters of a closed store.

Judge Robert Altham said Haywood had beckoned the Blackpool rioters to breach police lines, and that that his drunkenness on the day was an "aggravating feature".

Haywood was later seen visibly "too intoxicated" to work out how to use a loudhailer to speak to the crowds, the judge added.

Paul Williams, 45, was jailed for two years and two months on Friday after pleading guilty to one count of violent disorder in connection with the Sunderland riots.

The court heard he had entered the city centre to collect a takeaway, but ended up at the "forefront" of an "orgy of mindless destruction, violence and disorder".

His defence lawyer said he had no political opinions around immigration and was "entirely unaware of the basis of what started this".

Newcastle Crown Court heard Williams threw metal fencing and a can of beer at police, stripped off his shirt and ran at the line of riot shields.

Meanwhile, Stevie Mulryne, 29, was jailed for 16 months and Charles Smith, 22, was sentenced to 23 weeks for their roles in disorder near Downing Street on 31 July.

Westminster Magistrates Court heard that Mulryne made a stabbing gesture towards police and led offensive chanting, while Smith "struck up a fighting stance" and chanted "scum" at officers.

The first adult to be charged with riot, a more serious offence carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, has appeared in court.

Kieran Usher, 32, did not enter a plea at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court after being charged in connection with disorder in Sunderland city centre on 2 August.

On Thursday, a 15-year-old boy became the first person in England to be charged with riot over his role in the Sunderland unrest.

Meanwhile, Ashkan Kareem, 33, has been jailed for 12 months after participating in a clash in Darlington on 5 August.

Kareem said he was trying to protect a mosque from being attacked by "racists".











The presiding judge said Kareem was part of a group which gathered in opposition to men "chanting racist and far-right slogans", but it was "abundantly clear that would result in violence and it did".






Further sentences for offences of violent disorder were handed out in Bristol, Sheffield, Sunderland, Blackpool, Liverpool and Plymouth on Friday.

Olaf Scholz is poised to remove benefits from refugees who arrive in Germany through other EU countries, leaving them with the bare essentials of ?bed, bread, and soap.?












Following the Islamic State-inspired terror attack in Solingen last Friday, the German chancellor is said to be preparing new measures to tackle illegal migration.




According to reports from various German media outlets, Mr Scholz will cut all welfare payments for migrants previously registered in other EU countries.

Under EU law refugees must apply for asylum in the first country they enter. However, many migrants continue their journey to Germany and other northern European nations after arriving on the Mediterranean coast.

For the past decade, Berlin has largely ignored the so-called Dublin regulation and allowed migrants to file a second asylum application in Germany.

Additionally, attempts to deport migrants have been hampered by the reluctance of other EU members to take them back.

Cases where the country has tried to enforce the rules have frequently been thwarted by legal challenges. German courts have often ruled that countries such as Greece fail to meet the EU?s basic requirements for migrant care, including adequate shelter, food, and hygiene.

Last year, Berlin suspended its participation in a pact to distribute migrants arriving in Italy, citing Rome?s refusal to implement the Dublin rules.


Mr Scholz is facing mounting pressure to clamp down on illegal migration after a Syrian man killed three people with a kitchen knife at a street festival last week.






The assailant, who arrived in Germany in 2022 after being registered in Bulgaria, had been on a deportation list for over a year.

Frightened locals had to lower children down from the roofs of burning buildings after an armed attacker set fire to homes.




A Syrian man with a machete caused terror across the city of Essen in Germany on Saturday and left 30 people injured including eight children. He caused a blaze in two blocks of flats and drove a van through two stores.

Harrowing photos showed people trying to reach trapped residents with ladders to help them escape. However, the equipment was unable to stretch far enough to access the higher floors, so people had to work together to retrieve children from the roofs.

In one image, a young girl was seen attempting to reach a ladder as smoke ascended in the air. Another man was spotted standing on a window ledge to help a child who was trying to escape.

Emergency services were alerted to two fires in residential buildings shortly after 5pm, police said. Two of those who were injured were left in a life-threatening condition after inhaling smoke.

Shortly after the fires broke out, a van drove into two shops in the city, causing damage to property but no injuries. The suspect then allegedly threatened people with weapons, but several men managed to push him back with shovels and poles and hold him until police arrived.

Police said the suspect was a 41-year-old Essen resident with Syrian citizenship. They said the mans motive appeared to be that his wife had left him, and he targeted houses and shops where people who supported her lived, according to local media.

The fire service said that, when it arrived at the scene of the first blaze, smoke was billowing from the entrance of the building and people were calling for help from windows.

The suspect has not commented so far on what happened on Saturday, but was previously known to authorities for threats and damage to property, police said. Prosecutors were seeking to have him kept in custody on suspicion of arson and attempted murder.

The man, whom we are calling Thanh, is now claiming UK asylum and told us he has spent almost 20 years - his entire adult life - in the smuggling industry.

He has been in prison, led a gang working on the northern coast of France, and claims to have helped more than 1,000 people to risk their lives to cross the Channel.


The self-confessed criminal met the BBC at a secret location to share detailed information about the mechanics of the international smuggling industry.




A Very Lucrative Business






Thanh walks into the room cautiously, dark eyes moving fast as if searching for possible exit routes. A small, neat, quietly authoritative figure in a black polo neck.

After months of phone calls and one brief meeting, the interview takes place on a grey day in a small hotel room, in a northern English town that we are choosing not to name here.


We decided there was a strong public interest in hearing about Thanhs life in the smuggling trade, which could only be secured in return for agreeing to keep his identity confidential. He fears being recognised not only by the British authorities but by Vietnamese criminals in the UK.

Vietnam emerged in the first months of this year - suddenly and unexpectedly - as the largest single source of migrants seeking to cross the Channel to the UK illegally in small boats.

Many Vietnamese migrants have cited failing businesses and debts at home for their decision to seek work in the UK. Their first step, experts have suggested, is often to access Europe by taking advantage of a legal work visa system in Hungary and other parts of Eastern Europe.

This is where Thanhs forgery operation comes in, he says. He helps create the fake paperwork needed to get the legitimate work visas.

I cant justify breaking the law. But its a very lucrative business,Thanh said calmly, insisting he doesnt provide forgeries for people seeking UK visas.

We know from our interviews with Vietnamese smugglers and their clients that people pay between $15,000 and $20,000 to travel from Vietnam to mainland Europe and then to cross the Channel.

It is a dangerous business. More than 50 people have been killed crossing the Channel in small boats already this year, making 2024 the deadliest on record. For the first time, the figures include one Vietnamese.

When our team first made contact with Thanh in mainland Europe earlier this year, we knew he was going to attempt to get to the UK with other Vietnamese. He later let us know he had crossed the Channel from northern France, in a small boat.

Thanh told us he had first flown from Vietnam to Hungary on a legitimate visa - although he had acquired it using forged documents.

He had then flown on to Paris and stayed for a few days in a safe house, organised by a Vietnamese smuggling gang on the citys outskirts. Soon after then, he was taken in a group by minibus to the coast and, finally, put in the hands of one of the Kurdish gangs that control the small boat crossings.


But the Vietnamese passengers pay three or four times more money to the gangs handling the crossing routes, he told us, so we get the advantage of being given a place more quickly

In fact, our sources suggest the Vietnamese pay roughly twice the usual rate.

Thanh asked for asylum when he was interviewed by a British immigration official - explaining he had left Vietnam because he had got into debt to gangsters when his business failed. His life, he said, was in danger.

Furious residents claim their village in the shadow of Windsor Castle has been turned into a 'hell hole' after asylum seekers were moved into its hotel.


They fear genteel Datchet in Berkshire will lose its quintessential country feel, house prices will tumble and businesses struggle.

Their outcry comes after the Manor Hotel was turned into a holding centre for migrants awaiting a decision on their asylum applications.

One man revealed he has put his home on the market after claiming the conversion was the latest sign that the village is being run down by the authorities.






Pub staff meanwhile, claim they suffered a loss of custom when the 19th Century hotels owners swapped tourists and wedding guests for refugees.


Others say the village - which the King is driven through daily - feels less 'safe' because groups of young men hang around the pretty village green.





One home-owner said: 'I put my house on the market, I've had enough.









'This has been such a nice village. It's been safe and it's been left to go to rack and ruin. It's just becoming a hell-hole.'

More than 600 Brazilians, including 109 children, have been secretly removed from the UK ? on the three largest Home Office deportation charter flights in history ? since the Labour government came to power, the Observer has learned.



The Home Office has never before removed any nationality in such large numbers on individual deportation charter flights. It is thought that children have never before been removed on these flights.

According to freedom of information data seen by the Observer, the three flights were on 9 August, when 205 people including 43 children were removed; 23 August, when 206 people were removed, including 30 children; and 27 September, when 218 people were removed, including 36 children. All the deported children were part of family units, and many of them would have been settled at school and are likely to have spent most if not all of their lives in the UK.

The returns were classed as voluntary and were likely to include people who had overstayed their visas. The Home Office offers incentives for voluntary returnees of up to ?3,000 including for babies and children. The sweeteners are provided in the form of pre-loaded cards that can be activated once people touch down in their home country.

The government is keen to trumpet its deportation credentials with figures published on Thursday revealing 8,308 enforced and voluntary returns between July and September 2024, a 16% increase on the same period last year. The majority ? 6,247 ? were voluntary returns, an increase of 12% on this category of returns during the same period in 2023.


While the government is keen to promote the numbers returned they have failed to mention publicly that the destination of these historic deportation flights was Brazil.

The UK and Germany have agreed a landmark deal that will see police crack down on smugglers storing small boats in warehouses. Facilitating people-smuggling is not technically illegal in Germany currently, if it is to a third country outside the EU - which, following Brexit, includes the UK.

Under the new agreement, the Home Office says Germany has pledged to make the activity a clear criminal offence.

New laws to be brought in by the German government will see authorities seize vessels earmarked for dangerous Channel crossings. Gang members smuggling people into the UK will be prosecuted as a result of the agreement signed by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Germany's Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser.

Ms Cooper said lives will be saved as a result, with new laws leading to a surge in prosecutions. It follows the arrest last month of a 44-year-old man who was allegedly supplying engines and boats to smugglers.

The Turkish national is accused of shipping supplies from his homeland, storing them in Germany before transporting them to Northern France. These boats were used by smugglers to transport asylum seekers across the Channel

The agreement with Germany will also see intelligence and law enforcement services share expertise and stop people smugglers using social media to attract business.

So far this year, more than 70 people have died attempting to cross the Channel, including children.

The trio helped move migrants from Afghanistan through Iran, Turkey and the Balkans into western Europe. Many were crammed onto small boats to the UK.

Young boys making the journey were seriously sexually abused, with gang members filming the harrowing attacks and using the footage to blackmail their victims. Saifur Rahman Ahmedzai, also known as Raees Hamza, 23, was arrested in Hemel Hempstead on Monday.




National Crime Agency officers arrested 20-year-old Zeeshan Banghis, also known as Bangash Zeeshan, in New Kent Road, London, on December 18.

Ziarmal Khan, also known as Boxer Bhai, 24, was arrested on December 6 at Stansted Airport on suspicion of domestic violence, before he was further arrested over his conviction in Belgium.

Meanwhile in August, the numbers of migrants successfully claiming asylum reached the highest levels since records began, according to Home Office statistics.

The true number, however, could be far higher as this figure only includes those who were discovered by authorities.

Turkish national Hakan Barac, 28, had reached the country two years ago and was in the process of applying for asylum when he was arrested by counter-terrorism police last year.

Bristol Crown Court heard Barac had been posting videos on social media sites, including Instagram and Telegram, glorifying Isis and terrorists Osama bin Laden and Abu Bakr al Baghdadi.

The videos showed jihadists preparing for martyrdom, and also featured Saudi born Canadian recruiter Mohammed Khalifa.

Ben Lloyd, prosecuting, said: It was apparent that a substantial number of followers to his accounts were interested in extreme Islamic subject matters.

The defendant shared such material recklessly. In other words, he was reckless as to whether an effect of his posting the material would be the direct or indirect encouragement to the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

The prosecution's position is that the defendants activity, whilst not intentional, nevertheless involved a repeated and wilful disregard with a clear, serious and obvious risk of encouraging terrorist activity.

Pictures on Friday showed what appeared to be tear gas being launched at migrants at Gravelines, near Calais, with large white clouds of smoke seen billowing in the air.







Other images showed asylum seekers standing knee deep in the water, with police officers, wearing helmets and holding shields, following them into the sea to drag them back to shore.


But ultimately, French officers were said to have been overwhelmed by the sheer number of people attempting to clamber onto the small boats.

The tactic used by French police appeared to be a change in approach from earlier this week.

An Albanian drug dealer who posed for photographs with GB250,000 in cash has been permitted to remain in the UK despite attempts by authorities to deport him







Olsi Beheluli, 33, who arrived in Britain aged nine, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for his senior role in a heroin trafficking ring after being caught with eight kilograms of high purity drugs in 2015.


The Home Office and National Crime Agency have sought to prove he fraudulently obtained British citizenship, arguing he lied on his naturalisation application about criminal involvement just eight months before his arrest.

However, tribunal judges have ruled there is insufficient evidence to support deportation, ordering another hearing whilst Beheluli remains in the country.....

Beheluli was arrested in October 2014 whilst transporting heroin worth ?200,000 to a stash house in Neasden, north London, where police discovered counterfeit identity documents and scales.

The Home Office argued that dealing with such valuable drugs contradicted his promise on his April 2014 citizenship application that there was nothing which reflected adversely on his character

Officials claimed it was incredible to presume this was his first drug offence, stating: It is beyond logic to accept that he would be trusted with such a consignment of drugs if he was not already involved in the supply of Class A drugs.

They maintained that only someone with an established criminal history would be entrusted with eight kilograms of high purity heroin.

The upper tribunal ordered a rehearing, concluding the Home Secretarys stance was deserving of respect and was capable of supporting the common sense stance

Beheluli arrived in the UK with his family in November 2000, with his father claiming asylum. After initial rejections, they were granted discretionary leave to remain in 2006, which became indefinite leave to remain.

During searches, police discovered a shocking image on Behelulis phone showing him beside 250,000 in cash, which he had also posted on social media.

He claimed it was a relatives money photographed in Albania, but detectives matched the wallpaper and furniture to his former rental property.

At Blackfriars Crown Court in April 2015, Beheluli was found guilty alongside gang members Besim Topalli and Azem Proshka, with the trio receiving a combined 31year sentence.

A major investigation has been launched at a popular Spanish holiday destination after several bodies were spotted floating in the sea - sparking a murder probe.








At least five corpses have been recovered by the Civil Guard in the Balearic Sea off Majorca, with hands and feet shackled. The bodies are believed to belong to migrants who attempted to reach Spain via a dangerous crossing from Algeria.


The Civil Guard believe that the suspected migrants could have been confronted, handcuffed and then thrown into the sea. Detectives could treat the cases as murder due to the migrants being tied up.

The tragic deaths took place over the last month, with authorities failing to address the incident to the public. It has been reported that one of the bodies was recovered on May 18 at around 5pm.

A private Belgian vessel sailing in waters west of Formentera raised the alert after spotting a body floating in the sea. After receiving the warning, the patrol boat of the Civil Guard R?o Segura went to the scene, which despite being based in the Canary Islands had moved to the Balearic Islands to carry out patrol services.

The crew members of the R?o Segura went to the point marked by the Belgian boat and about two hours later they located the lifeless body floating in the sea. When the Civil Guards recovered the body they discovered that he was tied hand and foot and was wearing an orange life jacket.

The Civil Guard patrol boat transferred the body to the vicinity of Cap de Barbaria, south of Formentera, where it was transferred to a boat that took it ashore. The body was later examined by Civil Guard agents and a forensic doctor, in an attempt to clarify the circumstances of the death.

A few days later, another body appeared in similar circumstances, also in the waters of Formentera. And they have been repeated several times over the last few weeks. In total, at least five bodies have been found with their hands and feet tied floating in different parts of the waters of the Balearic Islands. All of them presumably belonged to migrants who were travelling in a boat.

The Balearics have registered in recent days one of the highest concentrations of arrivals of boats of recent times. Between June 20th and June 22nd, security forces and Maritime Rescue teams intercepted and rescued a total of 344 people who were trying to reach the coasts of the archipelago in precarious boats.

On Friday, June 20th, 195 people were counted, while on Saturday, June 21st, 106 were located and on Sunday, June 22nd, another 39.

The Prime Ministers spokesperson has described the new approach as significant as footage showed gendarmes taking a knife to the boat, which was teeming with people in lifejackets hoping to make it to Britain.



Dramatic footage aired by the BBC shows the officers taking off their utility belts before dashing into the water armed with knives in what looks to be a preview of the new approach being unveiled at a France UK summit on tackling the issue next week.

A single jab with a blade is all it takes to puncture the boat, which begins rapidly collapsing into the water as the would-be migrants cry out in anger having just boarded the vessel seconds before.

Furious screams can be heard as they scurry to get back to the beach, while children can be seen crying. All the migrants on board managed to make their way safely back to shore.

Its a dramatic new tactic by French police, who have previously said French law prevents them from interfering with boats more than 10 feet from the coast. The rule is in the process of being scrapped, with France and Britain but some police appear to be acting early, prompting anger from refugee charities.

Number 10 hailed the actions of French cops on Friday as a significant moment that could have a major impact on smuggling gangs.

Downing Street said the change in stance from French law enforcement was thanks to the Prime Ministers reset in relations with Europe, as he has looked to heal the wounds caused by the Brexit years.

After initally denying they had escorted pro migrant protesters to the asylum hotel, Essex Police eventually admitted they did.


Speaking to LBCs Nick Ferrari, Seema Malhotra noted that police are operationally independent, saying I will leave it to Essex police to answer those questions

She added But I will just tell you what I see, which is the same thing that happens up and down the country every year at marches, at protests, at football matches and so on, which is if you have two rival groups heading to the same location, the police will usually put up a cordon around which the smaller group can avoid.

The first migrants to arrive in the UK after crossing the English Channel have been detained under the new one in, one out deal.





The detentions came as people arrived in Dover on Wednesday, the first day the pilot scheme came into force.



The Home Office said those detained on Wednesday afternoon will be held in immigration removal centres until they are returned to France.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Yesterday, under the terms of this ground breaking new treaty, the first group of people to cross the Channel were detained after their arrival at Western Jet Foil and will now be held in detention until they can be returned to France.

That sends a message to every migrant currently thinking of paying organised crime gangs to go to the UK that they will be risking their lives and throwing away their money if they get into a small boat.

The pilot scheme is set to last 11 months and will see the UK accepting an equal number of asylum seekers who have not tried to cross and can pass security and eligibility checks.

UK officials aim to make referrals for returns to France within three days of a migrants arrival by small boat, with French authorities responding within 14 days.

This is in exchange for an approved asylum seeker in France to be brought to the UK under a safe route.

Adults and families in France are able to express an interest in coming to the UK through an online platform set up by the Home Office.

They must meet suitability criteria, go through a standard visa application process and pass security checks.

If accepted, they would be given three months in the UK to claim asylum or apply for a visa, and would be subject to the same rules for all asylum seekers not allowed to work, study or have access to benefits.

The Home Office is expected to launch a campaign in coming days to make migrants in northern France and elsewhere aware of the new treaty.

As of 30 July, more than 25,000 people had crossed the Channel in small boats in 2025 about 49% higher than at the same point in 2024.

UK and international law prevents the government from sending asylum seekers back to their country of origin before their claim has been considered and turned down. However, they can be sent to safe countries prepared to consider their claim.

Epping Forest council has been granted a temporary injunction to prevent MILLIONAIRE Somani Hotels, the owner of the Bell Hotel, from accommodating migrants through a Home Office contract.


The company is now legally required to stop housing asylum seekers at the hotel within 24 days.

A number of other councils across England are poised to take legal action to remove asylum seekers from hotels in their areas. It follows the High Court granting a district council a temporary injunction blocking asylum seekers from lodging at The Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex


It was the subject of protests after an asylum seeker living there was charged with sexually assaulting a 14 year old girl.

Border Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle said the government will continue working with local authorities and communities to address legitimate concerns

Tory run Broxbourne Council was the first local authority to declare it was seeking legal advice after the ruling as a matter of urgency about whether it could take a similar action over a hotel in Cheshunt.

Council leader Corina Gander told the BBC that Epping Forest District Council had set a precedent

The government has failed, and now local councils are standing up, she said.

Meanwhile, the leader of South Norfolk District Council, also run by the Conservatives, said the council will not go down the same route over a hotel housing asylum seekers in Diss which has been the subject of protest.

Daniel Elmer said the authority was using planning rules to ensure it was families being housed in the area rather than single adult males.

Government ministers say they are braced for other councils to follow Eppings lead.

The ruling causes immediate practical difficulties for the Home Office, which has less than a month to find alternative accommodation for the asylum seekers currently housed at the Bell Hotel.

Home Office lawyers have acknowledged that the ruling could substantially impact the governments ability to house the 32,000 asylum seekers living in 210 hotels across the UK if other councils pursue similar action to Epping Forest District Council.


Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the government needs to have the courage to set up and restore the Rwanda deterrent which he said would have stopped these crossings

Furious BRITISH residents have vowed to continue their protests after the Home Office won an appeal against the closure of their local migrant hotels


STARMER AND THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT ARE NOT LISTENING


Essex police had been anticipating trouble, with as many as four marked vans parked on the forecourt from early in the afternoon, and ten officers stood outside the controversial accommodation, with migrants reportedly advised to stay indoors

It comes as the Court of Appeal set aside an injunction granted earlier this month which would have stopped 138 asylum seekers from being housed at the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex beyond 12 September

Today, the judges also ruled that the Home Office could intervene in the case, in a significant victory for the Government.

Lawyers for Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had argued that shutting the hotel would set a dangerous precedent that would have encouraged similar litigation by other councils.

The decision has enraged Essex locals who have been protesting outside the hotel for weeks. Tonight they took to the streets as well as those further afield in of Chichester, Cheshunt and Bournemouth taking part in anti immigration demos.


Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said the move showed Prime Minister Keir Starmer puts the rights of illegal immigrants above the rights of British people who just want to feel safe in their towns and communities

Moment AFRICAN migrants detained on Spanish beach -Tourists tackled a group of migrants after they landed on a popular Spanish beach last weekend.


An investigation has been launched after around 70 migrants were killed in brutal sea executions as they attempted to reach the Canary Islands.

According to reports, some of them were murdered, with their bodies being thrown into the Atlantic Ocean. Survivors claim some of the migrants were shot after the boat suffered from engine issues. The boat was also experiencing overloading.

Spanish news website Okdiario, claimed between 20 and 30 migrants are being investigated on suspicion of carrying out the murders. They are said to be in refugee centres at this time.




It has been reported that the victims were accused of stealing water, before they were accused of witchcraft as the supplies became low onboard


The site also said detectives were close to making the first arrests over incidents that took place on the vessel while it was adrift for more than a week before their rescue by Spanish coastguards.

Police have yet to comment on the websites report or another overnight by respected Spanish news agency EFE saying they had witness statements claiming some murders were committed on the boat.

Survivors are also said to have told investigators several migrants died of thirst and hunger and others threw themselves overboard after suffering delirium caused by dehydration. It was not clear this morning if any women or children are among the alleged victims.

Spanish coastguards rescued around 250 people on board the stricken boat west of the city of Dakhla in the disputed Western Sahara territory, 265 miles from the Canaries, following an August 24 alert from a passing merchant vessel.

Survivors are understood to have told officials after they were brought ashore at Arguineguin on Gran Canarias southern coast on August 25 around 320 people started the journey before they ran into problems at sea.

In June, Spanish police confirmed they had launched an investigation after the bodies of five migrants were found in the sea off the Balearic Islands with their hands and feet bound.

An Eritrean man who arrived in the UK by small boat has won a last minute legal claim to temporarily block his removal to France. He was due to be returned on Wednesday under the returns pilot scheme agreed in July between the UK and France.


In the first legal challenge against the deal, in the High Court in London, his lawyers argued he needed more time to present evidence that he might have been the victim of modern day slavery and the decision to remove him had been rushed.

The Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood was determined to make sure it worked. The injunction raises serious questions about whether other migrants allocated to flights will use the same grounds to delay or block their removal.

Lawyers for the Home Office had argued that he could have claimed asylum in France. They added that delaying his departure could encourage others allocated to the return flights this week to make similar claims, and undermine the public interest in deterring lethal small boat crossings.









Mr Justice Sheldon, who rejected the mans claim that he would be left homeless and destitute in France, said that he would nevertheless have to temporarily block the mans departure in light of that development.

There is a serious issue to be tried in relation to the trafficking claim and whether or not the Secretary of State has carried out her investigatory duties in a lawful manner, he said.
