Dozens of officers have been searching Roedale Valley Allotments on the Sussex Downs for a missing baby, after a couple, Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, were found and arrested in Brighton.

They had not been seen since their car broke down near Bolton on 5 January.

Police say their baby was not with them and are combing through nearby locations to try to find the infant.

The remains of a baby have been found in the search for a missing two-month-old child of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, the detective leading the investigation has said.

Met Police and Sussex Police officers has confirmed the baby was found in woodland near to where the couple were arrested.


The discovery in an area of woodland came as hundreds of officers and volunteers were scouring a 90 square mile area near Brighton.

The couple disappeared in early January and were arrested earlier this week.

They are being held on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

Det Supt Lewis Basford from the Metropolitan Police, the force which is leading the investigation, said a baby's body had been discovered close to where the couple were arrested on Monday.

"This is an outcome that myself and that many officers who have been part of this search had hoped would not happen," he said.

"I recognise the impact this news will have on many people who have been following this story closely and can assure them that we will do everything we possibly can to establish what has happened."

He said a post-mortem examination will now be held to help detectives as they seek to establish what happened. Earlier, police were granted an extra 36 hours to question the couple.

Teams are continuing to comb the area by torchlight looking for evidence, the final stages of a 55-day search which has ended in tragedy.

A post-mortem will now be carried out. Police say a cordon will be in place for a significant amount of time while enquiries continue.

Constance Marten 36, and Mark Gordon, 49, are accused of killing their newborn baby Victoria by taking her on the run to prevent her being taken away by social services.



The babys' placenta was found in an exploded car on the Manchester motorway - sparking a huge police hunt as the couple traversed the UK trying to find a port from which to escape, the Old Bailey heard.


The couple then spent nearly two months camping in a blue tent in the bitterly cold South Downs near Brighton before the baby, wearing only a onesie, allegedly froze to death.

Victoria was later found dead in the Lidl bag where prosecutors say she spent most of her life.

The couple met in 2016 and had four children in quick succession who were all taken into care after Marten gave birth to her first child using a fake Irish accent pretending to be a traveller, jurors have heard.

The couple deny the manslaughter of Victoria by gross negligence, concealment of the birth of a child, cruelty to a person under 16 and perverting the course of justice by disposing of the body.

Marten comes from a wealthy aristocratic family and her father was a page to Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple had escaped the burning car near Manchester at around 6pm, running up the muddy bank and climbing over a fence before dumping most of their belongings in a playing field, the court was told.

They then allegedly turned up outside the home of a man named Wai Wai Balash and asked for a lift.

In a statement read to court, Mr Balash said he came out of his home to take his son to football practice.

'I walked out and was shocked to see a lone female stood approximately five metres in front of my house. I could see she was carrying something in her hands.

He said Marten approached and said her car had broken down and asked for a lift to 'the nearest town.'

Gordon was standing further down the road under a street light, he said.

'It seemed to me she didn't know the area at all. She was very calm and confident.

'I thought it was strange the female was asking me for a lift and the male didn't speak.

'I saw the female had small baby in a blanket in her arms, I would say one or two months old at most.

'It was making noises throughout the journey but hadn't cried.'

He gave them a lift to Bolton town centre, where they asked where they could find hotels.

The couple then took a taxi from Bolton to Liverpool.

At 9pm, just three hours after leaving their burning vehicle the couple flagged down a taxi driven by Ali Yaryar.

Giving evidence by video link, Mr Yaryar said the first thing Marten did when she got into the car was ask him to put the heating on.

'She was cold, for that time of year she had not much clothes on. You could see she was shivering.'

Marten asked to go to Harwich, Essex, which Mr Yaryar had not heard of so he asked her to put a postcode in his phone.

'I said this is a long journey - we go to Heathrow Airport from Liverpool for £500 but this is a quiet night - I can go there if you want for £400.'

He said he offered to drive home and change into his personal Audi vehicle which he said would be warmer and more comfortable.

He said he noticed Marten was hiding a baby under her jacket which she was breastfeeding during the journey.

He offered to get a car seat but Marten said the baby was too small.

Gordon paid him £400 in £20 notes. He said the baby was wearing no clothes except a nappy. Gordon slept while Marten also tried to sleep, he said. They arrived at Harwich around 2.15am.

'I think it was near the sea somewhere. I offered them my phone I said do you want to call anyone. They didn't know where they are.'

John Femi-Ola, KC, representing Gordon, suggested the baby did have clothing on but was being changed when Mr Yaryar saw her just in a nappy.

However, Mr Yaryar replied: 'I think the baby had no clothes.'

Marten received nearly £19,000 in payments into her account from a trust fund while she was on the run, the court heard.

Jurors were earlier told Marten and Gordon went to Liverpool and Harwich as they were looking for a port to escape from.

This afternoon, the court heard that the couple arrived at a Premier Inn in Harwich just after 3am on January 6 with their baby asking for a room claiming they had broken down.

They checked in using the surname 'Thomas' and appeared 'quite distressed'.

Receptionist Taylor Roy said: 'I asked whether she would need a cot set up and she said that wouldn't be necessary as the baby would be staying with her.'

When the card machine lit up, Marten said 'oh no, we've got to pay cash'.

The receptionist explained they had to check ID for anyone paying in cash.

He said: 'She said 'we don't have it, we don't have it' and looked as if she was going to cry.

'I suggested she could just stay in reception and she looked at me as if it was below her and said 'please can we just have a room.'

Marten said: 'Please, we don't have anywhere to go, or anything.'

He said as the couple seemed desperate and had a baby he decided to let them stay.

Marten then went outside to get Gordon, who walked through the lobby hiding his face, the court heard.

Rae Robson, who works at the hotel, told the court that Marten came downstairs at 12.20pm the next day, 20 minutes after check out time, and asked to extended their stay.

She said she asked Marten to pay by card or give ID but Marten said she didn't have any so she told them they could not stay and gave them ten minutes to leave the hotel.

After ten minutes she went with her manager to knock on the door, and Marten and Gordon came out.

'She had a big coat on and it seemed like something was underneath it,' Ms Robson said.

Ms Robson then went into the room and noticed a smell.

'A really, really bad smell almost like rotting flesh - if you know what piercings or infected piercings smell like it was that amplified.

'I couldn't stay in that room for very long, I had to go in, open the window and leave.'







The couple then went to another hotel the next night, where Gordon again stayed silent as Marten spoke to staff, the court was told.


Gordon attended court today wearing a light blue shirt and tie while Marten was not in court but the jury was told a link was available for her to join.

The wealthy family lived at Dorset estate Crichel House during Marten's youth and her grandmother was a playmate of Princess Margaret and goddaughter to the Queen Mother.

Marten and Gordon deny manslaughter by gross negligence, concealment of the birth of a child, cruelty to a person under 16 and perverting the course of justice.

They also deny causing or allowing the death of a child. The charges date between January 4 and February 27, 2023. The trial is set to last six weeks.

The jury in the trial of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, who were accused of killing their baby daughter by going on the run with and sleeping rough with her in freezing temperatures in January 2023, has been discharged after failing to reach a verdict...

Marten, 37, and Gordon, 50, have been on trial for manslaughter since January after their daughter Victoria died the previous January while they were camping on the South Downs in wintry conditions.

In what they said was a bid to keep their baby after four previous children were taken into care, the couple had gone on the run and evaded police for nearly two months. Following their arrest, Victoria’s badly decomposed remains were found in a Lidl shopping bag in an allotment shed.

The couple denied charges of gross negligence manslaughter of Victoria between 4 January and 27 February last year and causing or allowing the death of a child. They also denied charges of perverting the course of justice by concealing her body, along with concealing the birth of a child and child cruelty.

Judge Mark Lucraft KC discharged the jury at the Old Bailey on Wednesday almost six months after the trial began, following more than 72 hours of deliberation.

Marten and Gordon may face a retrial.

Runaway aristocrat Constance Marten and her lover Mark Gordon were convicted today of killing their baby.


The couple shook their heads in the dock of the Old Bailey as they were found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence of their daughter Victoria after going on the run to stop her being taken into care.

Moments after being convicted, Gordon angrily shouted from the dock: 'I'm not surprised by the verdict. It was faulty, it was unlawful. This is not over, it has just begun.

Marten yelled, Its a scam, before walking out of the court in fury.

It can now be revealed, following their retrial, that the pair have already been convicted at an earlier trial of child cruelty, concealing the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice.

In an extraordinary case which gripped the country, the couple went on the run with their baby in a desperately selfish bid to prevent her being taken into care after their four previous children were removed by social workers, who feared they would come to harm.

Scotland Yard launched a nationwide manhunt, spending more than GB1.2million chasing the couple around the country after discovering a placenta in their car when the vehicle was ablaze on a motorway in Greater Manchester on January 5, 2023.

More than 100 officers pursued the couple as they fled in taxis, travelling hundreds of miles across the country from Bolton to Liverpool, then to Harwich in Essex, and on to East London before finally resorting to camping on the South Downs in the freezing cold.

A day later, when Victoria died in their flimsy freezing tent, Marten, 38, and Gordon, 50, dumped their baby in a soiled nappy inside a Lidl bag

Five police forces joined the hunt, devoting 1,000 officer hours at a cost of GB500,000 just to find the childs body after the pair refused to cooperate when they were arrested near Brighton after nearly two months on the run.

Police were shocked to discover the millionaire aristocrat had hidden her childs body beneath an empty beer can and discarded sandwich packaging in a disused shed.

Following two trials, costing taxpayers an estimated ?1.6million, it can now be revealed that;

Gordon is a sociopathic rapist whose sadistic crimes were compared to the American serial killer Ted Bundy


A national safeguarding panel is now looking at the landmark case as police have called for new laws to protect unborn children;

The couple were granted legal aid for their defence, hiring 19 lawyers to defend them at an estimated cost of ?600,000 yet she is a trust fund heiress worth ?2.4million

Gordon attempted to avoid trial, claiming he was more notorious than Wayne Couzens, the Scotland Yard police firearms officer who murdered Sarah Everard.


Martens father was a page to the late Queen and her grandmother was a playmate of Princess Margaret, but her lovers background could not be more different.

Hooked on violent pornography, Gordon was just 14 when he raped a woman at knifepoint in 1989 after breaking into her home armed with knives and hedge clippers, telling her Dont scream or I'll kill your children.

Over the next four and half hours, the teenage rapist tormented his victim, telling her she was going to die as he ran the blade down her body, holding it to her throat and heart saying All I have to do is push and you are dead.

The mother recalled I had no hope. I was told to say goodbye to my children because this was the day I was going to die. When I thought he might be going to leave, he said No, your nightmare isnt over yet

Within three weeks of carrying out the attack, Gordon broke into the home of a second woman armed with a set of knives.

But as he crept into her bedroom, placing two seven inch knives outside the door, Gordon was startled to find her husband home. Gordon battered him around the head with a shovel before fleeing in panic.

Gordon was jailed for 40 years, serving half of that in the US before being deported back to the UK.

When he was sentenced for both attacks, the rape victim pleaded with a judge to never let him free saying I ask you to make sure that this man does not have the opportunity to destroy any more lives.

The rape victim, who cannot be named, welcomed Gordons conviction today, telling the Mail Im very happy. This, once again, proves that our justice system works. They are too dangerous to be free to hurt anyone else.

Mother of five Constance Marten and her rapist Daddy Bear boyfriend have been jailed for a total of 28 years after their baby daughter died when they took her on the run to live rough.



Baby Victorias dead body was found by police at the bottom of a discarded Lidl bag, hidden under rubbish including a Budweiser can and an egg mayonnaise and cress sandwich package, which had been left in a shed on an allotment in Brighton. During her young life she had been taken by her mum Marten and dad Mark Gordon on a journey criss-crossing the country, in a bid to avoid the authorities.

Marten, 38, and Gordon, 51, both denied manslaughter by gross negligence of their daughter between January 4 and February 27, 2023, but were convicted following a retrial and appeared at the Old Bailey today to be sentenced for that crime and other convictions.

Marten and Gordon were each sentenced to 14 years behind bars, with Gordon also subjected to four more years on extended licence. As Judge Mark Lucraft KC handed down his sentence, he told them There has been no expression of remorse from either of you, adding they had been seeking to blame everyone else other than yourselves for what happened.




Seven jurors had returned to court to see the parents sentenced.

The pair had their first four children taken into care and they went on the run, planning to stop their newborn being taken by the state. They had been reported missing in early January 2023 and travelled around the UK to try and conceal their whereabouts.

Paying hundreds of pounds for taxis, the couple, with the Victoria visited Liverpool, Harwich, London, Colchester and eventually East Sussex amid a major hunt to find them. The defendants were caught on CCTV scavenging in bins for food even though Marten had received thousands of pounds from a trust fund and had GB19,000 in the bank.

They were finally arrested in Brighton last February 27 and baby Victorias decomposing body was found by police two days later.

The couple stood trial on a host of charges but when a jury was unable to reach verdicts on all of them, a retrial was ordered.


Gordon, who had already served more than 20 years in prison in America for rape, decided half way through proceedings to represent himself.

The Old Bailey jury was told the pair camped on the South Downs in wintry conditions, after they abandoned their car weeks earlier when it burst into flames near Bolton, Greater Manchester amid the highprofile manhunt. The court heard that the couple kept Victorias body in the shopping bag for days or even weeks after her death.

Marten told jurors Victoria was born on Christmas Eve 2022, and died on January 9, 2023. The prosecution alleged Victoria died from hypothermia or was smothered while co sleeping in a flimsy tent. In her evidence, Marten told jurors that the baby died after she blacked out and fell asleep over her after feeding her.
