Update re: VIDEOs/PhOtOs -Lewis Hamilton Wins CHINESE G.Prix

CHINESE GP: Lewis Hamilton Wins from Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel to Extend Lead in F1 World Championship

  • Lewis Hamilton led every lap after clinching pole position to seal his second victory of the campaign
  • Nico Rosberg was second for Mercedes with the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel completing the podium
  • Hamilton seals the 36th victory of his grand prix career to extend his lead at the top of the standings
  • Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth for Ferrari with the Williams drivers of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas 5th and 6th
  • Jenson Button was involved in a collision with the Lotus driver of Pastor Maldonado late on in the race
Daily Mail UK, 12 April 2015

Lewis Hamilton produced an exceptional display of race management to clinch his fourth Chinese Grand Prix victory.
The double Formula One champion's drive at the Shanghai International Circuit was befitting of his status to underline a thoroughly dominant weekend after topping every practice session ahead of claiming his 41st pole and 35th win.

Lewis Hamilton drove flawlessly on the track where he has known great success – and one agonising low – to win the Chinese Grand Prix for the fourth time.
The race finished in a disappointing anti-climax as marshals failed to clear Max Verstappen’s crippled Toro Rosso off the track, leaving Hamilton to cruise home ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in second place and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in third.

It was here at this circuit, 20 miles north north-west of Shanghai city centre, that Hamilton skidded off at slow speed entering the pits in 2007, devastating his title hopes during his rookie year. But following the safety car home today, he was hailed by a huge roar from the 29,000-strong main grandstand as the chequered flag was waved for him.

Hamilton was congratulated over the radio for having the ‘the full house’: pole, fastest lap and race win.
Greeted on the podium for the interviews by 400m hurdles double Olympic champion Ed Moses, Hamilton said:

'A fantastic job by the team. It was great to have a smooth weekend, dialling in the car which I then put in the place I wanted.
'It was then about controlling the gap to Nico until the safety car which wasn't helpful, meaning the end was a kind of an anti-climax. But we've done a great job to come back from the last race where we struggled a little bit, so I'm massively proud we've got the job done here.'

The race posed many tantalising questions.

Could they match Mercedes in the warm Shanghai heat, or were they flattered by the much hotter conditions in Malaysia a fortnight ago

(Answer: not quite a match but they provided real hope that they should keep Mercedes honest as the season develops.)

Could Rosberg live up to his coiffured, Euro chic sheen having lost his confidence and his way in recent weeks? (Answer: he was quicker all weekend than in the last few races, but was slightly ruffled on the radio, sometimes asking for more information; other times for less.)
Would Mercedes keep their heads under pressure from Ferrari?

(Answer: yes.)

Did their top men, Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe, have the experience and coolness to implement perfect strategy calls in the furnace of competition?

(Answer: yes, no mistakes.)

Daniel Ricciardo (left) and Daniil Kvyat battle for position on track - the latter was forced to retire after an engine failure

Hamilton is covered in champagne by Rosberg as the Mercedes pair celebrate a one-two finish

Hamilton, who has provided emphatic answers to every question since taking last year’s title fight by the jugular, made the perfect start. He inclined his car right on the grid, covering Rosberg next to him, before darting through the first, right-hand corner in front.
The Briton maintained a lead of about one second over Rosberg with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel three seconds further back for much of the first stint. He then banged in a series of fast laps to more than double his advantage over his team-mate before their first pit stops.

When they were all reshod, it remained: Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel, first, second, third. But Hamilton was relatively slow at this moment. Rosberg made this point over the radio, saying he could not get closer to Hamilton, though, because to do so would damage his tyres.

This slower procession allowed Vettel to get close to Rosberg, but never close enough that he could seriously entertain the idea of passing the Mercedes. Minutes later, Hamilton put down the hammer again, showing his true pace. He blitzed ahead.

The next round of pit stops unfolded: Vettel, Rosberg and Hamilton came in on successive laps fractionally beyond the middle of the 56-lap race. It changed nothing significant, all the stops running like clockwork. Hamilton’s lead was just over six seconds at this point.

Hamilton takes great pleasure in spraying champagne over a grid girl as he celebrates his victory at the Shanghai International Circuit

Rosberg appeared glum on the podium after losing out to team-mate Hamilton at the third consecutive race

An honourable mention for 17-year-old Verstappen, who drove his Toro Rosso with elan. He put his car down the inside of Marcus Ericcson’s Sauber, causing Max’s father and former racer Jos Verstappen to exhale in relief as he watched the potentially destructive move from the garage. He then applauded in admiration.

Verstappen also passed Sergio Perez with a daring late-braking move on the inside to move up to eighth. Wonderful stuff. Alas, his engine gave up on him and he walked out of his smoking car that was parked on the start-finish straight, to bring out the safety car for the last couple of laps of the afternoon.

Red Bull’s woes continued with Daniil Kvyat’s Renault engine billowing out its polluted grey smoke into Shanghai air that was thankfully less smoggy than usual.

‘I saw a lot of smoke coming from the rear of the car and I had to stop immediately,’ said Kvyat. ‘It is not ideal, but we have to carry on. It is not looking good but we must stay strong to overcome these problems.’

Their other car, driven by Daniel Ricciardo, was ninth.

McLaren were even less successful than Red Bull, again. Jenson Button, who was involved in a collision with the zany racer Pastor Maldonado of Lotus, was 13th, a place behind Fernando Alonso.
Alonso was even lapped by the Ferrari of Vettel, his direct replacement in the car that would have been his had he not moved team. McLaren’s journey back will be a long and hard one, testing even the perplexingly unshakeable optimism of both their drivers.

Max Verstappen starred once more following a number of thrilling passes, but he failed to make it to the end of the race after his engine expired

Race Car Lewis Hamilton Wins German Grand Prix After 'Nightmare' Race

Lewis Hamilton Cruises to German Grand Prix Victory as Nico Rosberg Finishes Fourth After Nightmare Race
  • Poor start from Nico Rosberg saw him drop behind Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen
  • Hamilton took lead from his Mercedes team-mate at turn one and never looked in trouble in Hockenheim
  • Rosberg was given five second penalty for forcing Verstappen off the circuit in his efforts to overtake him
  • German Grand Prix win means Hamilton leads championship by 19 points heading into summer break

JOE DOWNES AT HOCKENHEIM: Lewis Hamilton took full advantage of Nico Rosberg's miserable afternoon to win the German Grand Prix and extend his championship lead to 19 points. Hamilton capitalised on his team-mate's poor start from pole position to claim his sixth victory in seven races.

If the Briton enjoyed a straightforward afternoon, Rosberg's home race went from bad to worse. He was handed a five-second penalty for forcing Max Verstappen off the road midway through the race.

Daily Mail UK, 31 July 2016

Hamilton celebrates winning his fourth consecutive race by throwing his winners' trophy into the air

It meant he finished fourth, one place behind Verstappen and two behind Daniel Ricciardo who finished second to make it two Red Bulls on the podium.
Rosberg would have been dreaming of a good start at Hockenheim but the one he got was surely beyond his worst nightmares.
In Hungary last week, he was third after turn one having started on pole. It was inconceivable given the shorter run to the first corner here that a similar scenario would play out but somehow he went one worse.
Rosberg crawled off the line and was gobbled up by both Red Bulls to give Hamilton the easiest of tasks to claim the lead.

Hamilton led every lap of the race as he took his fourth consecutive win on a dream afternoon for the world champion

Verstappen started behind Ricciardo but his daredevil move around the outside at turn one gave him second.
Suddenly Rosberg was fighting to cling on to fourth, taking to the grass to fend off Sebastian Vettel who had jumped Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen at the start.
Rosberg held firm but his afternoon got worse at the first round of pit-stops. He followed Verstappen in at the end of lap 11 but lost valuable time, his stop more than a second slower than the teenager’s.

Verstappen emerged in clear air after swiftly dispatching Jenson Button, with Rosberg out behind not one but two McLarens.
Button pitted two laps later to finally release Rosberg and in-between that Ricciardo had made his stop and extended his buffer in third. Red Bull had decided to split their strategy now, Verstappen on the supersoft tyre and Ricciardo on the softs

Engineer, Pete Bonnington, told Hamilton it was ‘hammer time’ in front, urging his man to eke everything out of his used supersoft tyres.
He pitted for a fresh set of softs at the end of lap 14 as Mercedes too split their drivers’ strategies. Once everything had shaken out a lap later, Hamilton was six seconds clear of Verstappen and 10 ahead of his team-mate. Hamilton extended his advantage ahead of the next round of stops which Rosberg sparked on lap 27.

It was a cleaner one this time and Rosberg was urged to ‘push hard’ on his out-lap in an attempt to undercut the Red Bulls.
To prevent that, Verstappen responded, matching Rosberg’s pit-stop time to emerge just ahead.
Rosberg was on his tail until the tight turn six hairpin when he threw his Mercedes up the inside.

In a move similar to the one he tried on Hamilton in Austria when they collided, Rosberg drove straight on at the corner, leaving it as late as possible to turn in, forcing Verstappen off the road.
‘He forced me off the track!’, barked Verstappen over team radio. The stewards agreed, investigating the incident before slapping Rosberg with a five-second time penalty four laps later.

Rosberg dived down the inside of Verstappen heading into the hairpin as he attempted to pass the Red Bull driver

Rosberg missed the apex of the corner and appeared to force Verstappen off the road in a desperation to pass

Rosberg managed to hold position coming out of the corner but was then hit with a controversial five-second time penalty

‘I was full lock on the steering wheel,’ argued Rosberg, who was now up against it on the slower soft tyre.
Hamilton went in for more supersofts and led his team-mate by just shy of six seconds when he came back out.
With Rosberg’s penalty looming at his next stop, Red Bull had a decision to make. Their strategy call had meant Ricciardo was now in fourth, behind Verstappen, but on the quicker tyre.

Sensing the chance to capitalise on Rosberg’s misery, Verstappen let his team-mate past and Ricciardo charged after the Mercedes.
He was within touching distance when Rosberg pitted on lap 44, taking his penalty and a new set of soft tyres to get him to the end of the race.
Verstappen came in a lap later for the quicker supersoft tyre and Ricciardo followed suit on lap 46.

With plenty in hand, Hamilton too opted for the more durable soft tyres and re-entered the action more than 10 seconds clear of Ricciardo and 18 ahead of Rosberg.

A scruffy couple of laps and the Red Bulls’ faster rubber saw Ricciardo cut that to six seconds three laps later before Hamilton responded on lap 53, regaining a second. From then on it was as you were, with a late threat of rain failing to materialise.

Vettel’s frustrations continued, the German ignoring a Ferrari order to pit, before finishing fifth, one place clear of team-mate Raikkonen.

Button was another former world champion none too happy with an order to come in late on, telling his McLaren team: ‘This could be tricky guys, this could destroy both [him and team-mate Fernando Alonso] of our races.’ Button was right, finishing eighth, the Spaniard down in 12th.

Jolyon Palmer’s wait for the first points of his Formula One career goes on. The Briton started 14th but damage sustained in a collision with Williams’ Felipe Massa on lap one forced him to pit and relegated him to the back of the field.

Massa eventually retired and Palmer was last again after coming in at the end of lap 26 for a new front wing before finishing 19th.

It is a further blow for the rookie who was perfectly-placed to break his duck at last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix when he spun off from 10th towards the end of the race.

Race Car PhOtOs-Will New W08 'BEAST' Car Help Lewis Hamilton Regain the Title?

Lewis Hamilton Drives 2017 Mercedes for First Time Before Officially Unveiling Formula One Challenger at Silverstone

  • Mercedes officially launched their 2017 Formula One challenger on Thursday
  • Lewis Hamilton drove his car around track at the home of the British Grand Prix
  • The Brit will drive the Mercedes W08 alongside new team-mate Valtteri Bottas
  • Hamilton said this season he has 'this bigger, more powerful beast around you'
Daily Mail UK, 23 February 2017

Lewis Hamilton took his new Mercedes for a spin around the Silverstone track before officially unveiling the 'powerful beast' he hopes will land him a fourth world title.

The triple Formula One world champion was at the home of the British Grand Prix as the Silver Arrows showed off their new challenger to the world.
Prior to the launch, Hamilton — who narrowly missed out on the world title to former team-mate Nico Rosberg last season — gave fans a glimpse of what to expect this campaign at the blustery Northamptonshire circuit.

After driving the model that Hamilton hopes can lead him to a fourth drivers' title and the German team to a fourth consecutive constructors' crown for the first time, the Briton said: 'It felt incredible.

'Yesterday was the first time seeing the car come together, it's the most detailed piece of machinery I've seen so far in Formula One.'

Hamilton completed a few shakedown laps in blustery conditions at Silverstone but said he could already feel the difference.
'You've just got this bigger, more powerful beast around you,' he said.
'Driving today, naturally the car feels wider, which it is, and the front tyres feel huge. There is quite a lot of grip already even in the cold conditions here.

Hamilton appears in high spirits during the highly-anticipated unveiling of his 2017 car

Braving the blustery conditions, Hamilton carries his phone which he used to film unveiling

'This is not a test, really the laps I did today were behind a vehicle to get filming in and just a shakedown. I got to go a little bit faster but it's so gusty.'

Hamilton's team-mate for the 2017 season is Valtteri Bottas following world champion Nico Rosberg's decision to retire from the sport.

'Right now, it's a very exciting feeling for me,' said the Finn.
'I want to say a big thank you to everyone in our factories for getting this car ready to go. It's been a massive effort and I've got a lot of respect for the shape we are in at the moment. But it's only the first step - and this is where the work really begins.'

Their design on show on Thursday didn't use the 'shark-fin' engine cover which was noticeably displayed on the new Force India unveiled on Wednesday.
The colour scheme of the new Mercedes is similar to that of previous seasons with a striking nose, with the design more rounded compared to the thumb stub as seen on rivals Williams, Sauber and Renault's 2017 cars launched ahead of the new season.

Team boss, Toto Wolff, said his team have achieved what they set out to with their 2017 car and backed his new driving partnership to fire.

'The new rules for 2017 were designed to make the fastest F1 cars ever through a big increase in aerodynamic performance,' he said. 'They should be more physical to drive and hopefully more spectacular for the fans to watch. The proof will come in the opening races but we have probably achieved that target.
'Of course, we had a curve ball from Nico late last year that left us scrambling a little bit in the winter. But we found a great solution with Valtteri and I am sure that he will form a strong partnership with Lewis.
'They have both been working hard in the factory with the technical teams and, although we have a different dynamic to manage than in recent seasons, I don't expect the competition between them to be less intense. And that's how we like it.'

Hamilton will next take to his car at the opening of two pre-season tests in Barcelona next week. The season starts in Melbourne on March 26.

Daily Mail UK, 27 Aug 2017

Lewis Hamilton held off a charge from Sebastian Vettel to win the Belgian Grand Prix and cut his deficit at the top of the drivers’ standings to seven points.
It was a deserved victory for the Briton, who controlled the race, having started well from pole position.

All had been relatively plain sailing for Hamilton until a safety car was deployed 14 laps from the end, after the Force India cars of Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez collided to screams of fury over their respective radios.

SPA-FRANORCHAMPS, Belgium (AP) - Lewis Hamilton celebrated his record-equaling 68th pole position with victory at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, trimming championship leader Sebastian Vettel's lead to seven points.
Hamilton clinched his fifth win of the season and 58th overall, having equaled Michael Schumacher's pole record.

Vettel finished second, about 2 seconds behind Hamilton.

It was a comfortable win for the British driver, although it got a bit tense toward the end.

With about 10 laps left, Vettel almost overtook his challenger as they emerged from behind the safety car.

Vettel got his Ferrari alongside Hamilton on a long straight, but Hamilton edged his Mercedes into the corner just in time.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was third ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, with Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas fifth.

After 12 races, Vettel has 220 points to Hamilton's 213 heading into next weekend's Italian GP in Monza.

British Grand Prix 2019

14 July 2019

Lewis Hamilton Beats Valtteri Bottas to Take Record Sixth British Grand Prix Victory and Extend Championship Lead

Lewis Hamilton becomes the most successful driver at the British Grand Prix EVER as he claims sixth superb victory at Silverstone in front of more than 140,000 fans
  • Britain's Lewis Hamilton has won his home grand prix once again, with Mercedes dominating the race
  • It's the sixth time he's won the British Grand Prix, lifting him above Jim Clark and Alain Prost
  • Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas came in second despite starting on pole position and starting well
  • Sebastian Vettel piled into the back of Max Verstappen, and was penalised with a 10 second time penalty...

Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix for a record sixth time.

The world champion took advantage of a safety car 20 laps into the race to emerge ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas and extend his world championship lead to 39 points.

The victory – Hamilton’s seventh in 10 races – was celebrated wildly by a partisan crowd of 141,000, a Silverstone high.

Fastest lap: Lewis Hamilton, 1:27.369, Lap 52

It lifted Hamilton ahead of Jim Clark and Alain Prost, both of whom won the race on five occasions. He was presented with the old Royal Automobile Club cup on the grey afternoon at the Northamptonshire circuit.

Hamilton set a track record fastest lap on his final lap.

Bottas was second, 24.9 sec behind with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc third.

There was plenty of incident in the race. The biggest moment came on lap 38 after Max Verstappen passed Sebastian Vettel at Stowe. The move was clean.

Inexplicably Vettel then drove into the back of the Dutchman coming into Vale.

‘What the f***,’ said Verstappen. ‘What was he doing.’

They both tumbled off track. Vettel was awarded a 10-second penalty for his indiscretion. It raises further doubts over his form and mindset. The mistakes are adding up and he now trails Hamilton by 101 points.

The front of the race was dominated by the Mercedes cards of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, with Ferrari close behind

There was a great battle between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen which recurred at instances throughout the race

Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen spectacularly went wheel to wheel in the pit lane during the British GP at Silverstone

Lewis Hamilton made a quick stop at the end of the race to pick up the British flag to fly on his victory lap

There was some thrilling racing, especially in the first half of the afternoon.

Verstappen and Leclerc close danced again and again. Both raced beautifully.

Clearly Leclerc, who missed out on his maiden win in Austria a fortnight ago when passed by Verstappen, had learned his lesson and was determined to get his elbows out.

Hamilton tried to pass Bottas on track but could not pass the pole man, having started second himself. Both, again, played it hard but fair. They traded places on lap four. Hamilton ducked inside at Brooklands before taking the lead on the outside at Luffield. Bottas, however, had the tighter line and reclaimed the advantage on the drag into Copse.

The standard of fare was a tribute to Silverstone a few days after the deal to save the British Grand Prix until 2024 was struck between the circuit’s owners, the British Racing Drivers’ Club and Formula One’s owners, Liberty Media.

Lando Norris was 11th for McLaren, while his fellow British debutant George Russell was 14th for Williams, a career best.

Vettel was 16th, and a lap down – embarrassing.

Valtteri Bottas started from pole position and got out ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton into the first corner of the race

Verstappen was involved in more drama later on when Sebastian Vettel piled into the back of him and into the gravel trap

Sebastian Vettel was forced to pit after colliding with Max Verstappen, and was then given a 10 second time penalty

Antonio Giovinazzi was forced to retire early on in the grand prix after spinning his Alfa Romeo into the gravel trap

Lewis Hamilton Slams Silence Over George Floyd Death

Hamilton's Attack on White-Dominated F1 Draws Support From Rivals

Lewis Hamilton, Formula One's first black world champion, spends much of his time in America and spoke out on George Floyd's tragic death on Sunday night

Daily Mirror UK, 1 JUN 2020

London (AFP) - SIX Times World champion Lewis Hamilton drew a rapid positive response from many of his rivals after accusing the "biggest of stars" in "white-dominated" Formula One of failing to speak out against racism.

The Mercedes driver warned: "I know who you are and I see you" as he accused his fellow drivers of "staying silent" following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, during his arrest in Minneapolis.

The videotaped incident has triggered unrest in several cities and led to an outpouring of condemnation from figures including Michael Jordan and Serena Williams.

"I see those of you who are staying silent, some of you the biggest of stars yet you stay silent in the midst of injustice," Hamilton wrote on Instagram.

"I would have thought by now you would see why this happens and say something about it but you can't stand alongside us. Just know I know who you are and I see you."

Hamilton's team responded with a statement of support.

"We stand with you Lewis," Mercedes posted on Instagram. "Tolerance is an elementary principle of our team."

Several drivers also reacted, some addressing Hamilton, others finding their voice about Floyd.

"To be completely honest, I felt out of place and uncomfortable sharing my thoughts on social media," tweeted Charles Leclerc, a 22-year old Monegasque who drives for Ferrari. "And I was completely wrong."

- Stand together -

Leclerc drew a response from Williams driver George Russell.

"We all have a voice to speak up for what's right – and until now I didn't know how to use mine in this situation. To echo @charles_leclerc's words, I just felt out of place sharing my thoughts on these atrocities publicly," wrote the 22-year-old Briton.

Alex Albon, a 24-year old British driver with Thai roots, also said he had felt uncomfortable speaking out.

"Truthfully I have been quite hesitant having a voice around George Floyd's death. I grew up in a very privileged way, shielded from racism," the Red Bull driver wrote. "It's never too late to change and to address what's wrong, this is about justice and to stand up for racial equality."

Hamilton's call for stars to speak out seemed to strike a chord with Lando Norris.

"I have fans and followers," the 20-year-old Briton who drives for McLaren wrote. "I have power through this to lead and inspire so many. But we also stand for what's right."

Nicholas Latifi, a 24-year-old Canadian of Iranian origin who drives for Williams, posted "This has to stop" with a link to a petition and JusticeforGeorge and BlackLivesMatter hashtags.

Two 30-year-old veterans Australian Daniel Ricciardo and Mexican Sergio Perez did not refer to Hamilton in their posts.

"What happened to George Floyd and what continues to happen in today's society is a disgrace," said the Red Bull driver.

The Racing Point man tweeted a video of a non-violent American sheriff and added the Blacklivesmatter hashtag.

Carlos Sainz, the 25-year-old Spanish McLaren driver and Antonio Giovinazzi, a 26-year-old Italian who dives for Alfa Romeo, also condemned racism.

In a second post, Hamilton added: "I do not stand with those looting and burning buildings but those who are protesting peacefully. There can be no peace until our so called leaders make change."

Soon after Hamilton's social media posts, several F1 drivers took to their accounts to call for unity against racism.

Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo, who will cross to McLaren at the end of the season, said Floyd's death was "a disgrace".

Lapping the entire pack up to third for his maiden win aged 23, ending a six-year drought in 2014 and breaking records in 2017... Lewis Hamilton is in SEVENTH heaven after latest victory at British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton's British Grand Prix win: 'The most dramatic ending I can remember'

7th Win - 2020

Hamilton appeared to be cruising to a seventh Silverstone triumph, but ended up crawling home on three wheels after a dramatic final lap in which he suffered a puncture to his front-left tyre.

Max Verstappen chased him to the line in his Red Bull but he ended up getting home by five seconds, and the Dutchman would have caught him had he not pitted just before in a bid to get the fastest lap.

Race Car re: Lewis Hamiltons’ Title Hopes Hit by Brazil Penalty & Investigation

Challenger, Champion, Change-Maker - The Real Lewis Hamilton Story

He is the most successful driver in the history of F1*, but how did he do it?

BBC SPORT 16 NOV 2020

Lewis Hamilton set the world on fire on his very first serious run in a Formula 1 car.

At Silverstone, in September 2006, a 21-year-old Hamilton was given an evaluation test by McLaren as the team pondered his promotion to F1 the following year.

McLaren’s then race driver Pedro de la Rosa was there as a benchmark. The engineers preparing the car knew Hamilton had talent - the team had been supporting his career for the past eight years - but they were expecting him, like most other drivers, to need time to adjust to the extreme demands of a grand prix car.

They were wrong. After a couple of familiarisation runs, Hamilton was given a set of new tyres, and immediately he was matching De la Rosa’s times.

“Just looking at the data for a couple of seconds,” De la Rosa recalls, “I realised we had a massive problem - me and all the other drivers on the grid.

“When I saw the strength of Lewis, I realised this guy is on a different level.”

The test team reported back to the factory that Hamilton was “incredible”, and before long his place in the team for 2007, as team-mate to double world champion Fernando Alonso, was confirmed. It was, says Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren’s chief executive officer at the time, “one of the easier decisions”.

Formula 1’s greatest debut season followed. Hamilton was unlucky not to win the title, but made amends a year later as one of the most dramatic finales in sporting history made him - at the time - the youngest ever F1 world champion.

Year after year, Hamilton has gone on producing moments that have been carved into F1 legend. Jaw-dropping qualifying laps and remarkable race drives continuing through the campaigns with McLaren and his later move to Mercedes, where he has not only dominated on track for the past seven years but become a global icon with a reach far beyond his sport. There have been a few controversies along the way, too.

According to many of those who have shared the journey with him, Hamilton is fair, generous, respectful, honest and honourable, but also ruthless, focused, self-obsessed and ultra-competitive; insular and intense but also warm and open.

And now, he is the most successful driver in the history of F1. He broke Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins last month, has equalled the German's record of seven world championships - and has every chance of adding an eighth next year.

THAT is how he did it....

Lewis Hamilton Faces Uncertain F1 Future After Toto Wolffs' Suggestion Over New Era

After months of speculation - and with the 2021 season getting underway in Bahrain next month - Hamilton's spot on the grid was confirmed on Monday

Daily Mirror UK, 9 FEB, 2021.

Lewis Hamilton will work under Toto Wolff at Mercedes for at least another season

Sir Lewis Hamilton finally ended his long-running contract dispute with Mercedes by signing a new one-year deal - but his future beyond that remains uncertain.

After months of speculation - and with the 2021 season getting underway in Bahrain next month - Hamilton's spot on the grid was confirmed on Monday.

The Briton, 36, has negotiated a pay rise on his old £35million-a-year deal which expired on the final day of December, with the new terms believed to be worth up to £40m on a shorter one-year agreement.

But the 12-month extension raises the increasing possibility that Hamilton, who has won six of his seven world titles with Mercedes, may be preparing for his last hurrah with F1's all-conquering team.

And his Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has refused to play down those concerns, with team-mate Valtteri Bottas' seat also up for renewal at the end of the year.

"Lewis needs to decide what his future holds for him so I wouldn't want to comment on where he stands (in 2022)," said Wolff.

"On the other side, the team needs to decide long-term what we are going to do about our drivers.

"Valtteri and Lewis have our 100 per cent commitment and loyalty for 2021. We will support them with everything we have."

George Russell, who impressed when standing in for Hamilton last year, has been linked with a permanent drive next season while Mercedes are also long-term admirers of Red Bull superstar Max Verstappen.

Wolff flirted with the idea of luring F1's younger talents to the Silver Arrows and added: "We will then look beyond this year and say what is the line-up that we imagine in 2022 and onwards?

"Our first discussion will be with Valtteri and Lewis in respecting our values of loyalty and integrity, but on the other side, the young drivers are the future and we need to consider how we want to set ourselves up for the years beyond.

"As long as Lewis enjoys racing he is very capable of going longer. He looks after himself, physically and mentally, so I don't think in terms of ability that ends in 2021. But in the end, it is his decision."

Hamilton will this season bid to win an unprecedented eighth world title and surpass Michael Schumacher as the most successful F1 driver of all time.

Somewhat surprisingly, there was no reaction from Hamilton on his social media channels following Monday's announcement.

But, in a press release, he said: "I am excited to be heading into my ninth season with my Mercedes team-mates.

"Our team has achieved incredible things together and we look forward to building on our success even further, while continuously looking to improve, both on and off the track."

Lewis Hamilton Wins British Grand Prix After Being Penalised for Max Verstappen Crash

Hamilton chased down Charles Leclerc to earn victory in his home Grand Prix after a dramatic crash with Max Verstappen earlier in the race

Daily Mirror UK, 19 JUL 2021

Lewis Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix after piping Charles Leclerc in a dramatic finish, which came after an earlier crash with Max Verstappen.

Home favourite Hamilton beat Leclerc to the chequered flag after surpassing the Ferrari driver late in the race, with Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in third.

The victory is Hamilton's eighth British GP success at Silverstone, and puts him just eight points behind Verstappen in the Drivers' Championship.

His crash with Verstappen had earlier forced his rival to go to hospital.

The pair went wheel to wheel in the opening lap before they clashed at 180mph at Copse Corner.

A statement from the FIA on it read: "Following an incident during the FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix today, 18/07/21, the driver of car #33, Max Verstappen, has been taken to a local hospital for further precautionary checks."

'Stupid idiot!': Verstappen blasts Hamilton - hours after claiming pair had buried hatchet

Billy Joel entertained the Circuit of the Americas crowds with some of his old hits as Formula 1 partied like it was 2019 in Texas last night. Piano Man. Uptown Girl. But it’s Lewis Hamilton who is going to have to start a fire today after being pipped to pole for the United States Grand Prix by title rival Max Verstappen.

Hamilton will line up second on the grid alongside the man he trails by six points in what continues to be an enthralling drivers’ championship. And it promises to be a cracker of a race, with the seven-time world champion the filling in a Red Bull sandwich with Sergio Perez, much to the crowd’s delight, producing an excellent qualifying performance and even holding provisional pole for a while. The Mexican will start third.

Nor can Hamilton expect team-mate Valtteri Bottas to do much to help - at least initially - with the Finn dropping from fourth on the grid to ninth thanks to his engine change on Friday.

First place qualifier Max Verstappen of Netherlands and Red Bull Racing and third place qualifier Sergio Perez of Mexico and Red Bull Racing celebrate in parc ferme during qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of USA at Circuit of The Americas on October 23, 2021 in Austin, Texas

Hamilton is going to have to do it on his own. And he said he would do his best, smiling in his post-race interviews and saying his mindset was 100 percent to win. But his disappointed voice at the end of qualifying, saying “Sorry” to his team, told its own story.

Mercedes had been expected to have a slight edge at the Circuit of the Americas and they certainly began the weekend with a dominant showing in first practice. But Hamilton said he felt the team had “gone backwards” since then, struggling with the car’s setup in the remaining practice sessions. And he never looked truly comfortable in qualifying.

Red Bull suffered a late scare when they spotted a crack on Verstappen’s rear wing just before qualifying, deciding to “beef up” both cars just prior to the session in the words of team principal Christian Horner. But they always appeared to have the edge.

Hamilton was only able to go eighth fastest in Q1, although he was on a used set of rubber. And while the seven-time world champion upped the ante in Q2, producing the second quickest time, he still found himself more than three tenths off the pace of Verstappen.

And it was much the same story in Q3, Hamilton managed to produce a decent final lap to take provisional pole but even with some spots of rain falling - just to add a bit more drama to proceedings - Verstappen was able to go two tenths quicker.

“I gave it everything today,” Hamilton insisted. “I think from first practice onwards we fell back a little bit. But I was happy with my final lap. I think that was pretty much everything I had. We’re in a good position on the front row at least. My mindset is to win the race and to give these guys the best race possible.”

Driver Standings - F1

1 Max Verstappen Red Bull Racing 7 262.5
2 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport 5 256.5
3 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport 1 177
4 Lando Norris McLaren F1 Team 0 145
5 Sergio Pérez Red Bull Racing 1 135
6 Carlos Sainz Scuderia Ferrari 0 116.5...

Verstappen, meanwhile, said he felt he could have extracted even more. “Yeah, it was quite exciting out there,” he said. “In Q3 my first lap wasn’t amazing. But then in my final lap it started spitting in the final sector especially. But to be P1 and P3 on the grid I think is a very strong performance.”

Asked about the likelihood of some wheel-to-wheel action with Hamilton lining up alongside him, Verstappen smiled. “I guess that’s what people like. We have to have a good start and then work together as a team to get the best possible result.”

It certainly promises to be a thrilling race, with Ferrari and McLaren looking competitive as well.

Further back, Williams’ George Russell fell to 15th when his only lap time in Q2 was deleted. The young Briton starts from the back of the grid in any case due to an engine change earlier in the weekend. But there should be some great racing all the way down the grid on a track that usually provides some decent action.

Race Car re: F1: Verstappen WINS Finale in Abu Dhabi -ALL Mercedes Protests Dismissed

Lewis Hamiltons’ Title Hopes Hit by Brazil Grid Penalty and Investigation

World champion will start in sixth, at best, at Interlagos

Hamilton pole for sprint race in doubt over DRS irregularity

The Guardian UK 13 NOV 2021.

Lewis Hamilton during a press conference for the Brazilian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen qualified second fastest for the sprint race at Interlagos.

Lewis Hamilton’s hopes of taking a record eighth Formula One championship have been dealt a potentially severe blow after he received a grid penalty for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The world champion gave himself a chance to fight back with a dominant performance to take pole in qualifying for Saturday’s sprint race, yet even that may not be secure. An hour and a half after qualifying, Hamilton’s car was referred to the stewards when it was found to have an irregularity in his DRS system and is under investigation. If a breach of the technical regulations is found he could be disqualified from qualifying and start the sprint from last place. However his title rival Max Verstappen could also be in trouble for an alleged breach of protocol.

The world champion’s Mercedes team opted to fit his cr with a new engine this weekend and he will take a five-place grid drop and face a major task in attempting to come back and minimise his points loss to Verstappen. Nonetheless, the new engine was firing perfectly as he began strongly by beating Verstappen into second by 0.4sec in Friday’s qualifying.

“Let’s go,” a determined sounding Hamilton said as he took the pole. He was pleased but realistic about what lay ahead. “Today was a really good qualifying session, I am super happy with it,” he said. “We have the penalty but will give it everything we’ve got. It’s not easy to follow here and Max is starting on pole now. It’s going to be very hard to catch him but I will do my best to get through the field.”

Hamilton trails Verstappen by 19 points with four meetings and 107 points remaining. With the penalty the British driver will at best start from sixth if he claims pole in the sprint race, while Verstappen’s pace suggests he will at very least be on the front row. If Verstappen wins on Sunday he can afford to finish second to Hamilton in the remaining three races and still take the title.

In Friday’s qualifying Hamilton was quickest in Q1 and Q2. He then held the early advantage, setting a time of 1min 08.107sec on his first hot run in Q3 and enjoying 0.2sec on Verstappen in second. Coming to their final laps of the glorious, sweeping circuit Hamilton was in no mood to cede the lead. Verstappen set his final lap first and, a little edgy, lost time in the first sector while Hamilton found even more, finishing with 1min 07.934sec and clear daylight to the Dutchman. Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas was in third with Sergio Pérez in fourth for Red Bull.

It was the first skirmish of the weekend and Hamilton still has serious work to do. He had expected to be behind Red Bull but would have been targeting second at the very least and potentially dropping only six points to his rival. He will have a fresh engine that is delivering at maximum performance for the race, but coming though the field will by no means be easy and he can expect Red Bull to mount a strong defence at the front using Verstappen’s teammate Pérez.

Nonetheless the straightline speed he demonstrated in qualifying, particularly on the huge run up the hill from turn 12, Junção, to turn one suggests he will be able to make real progress.

The decision is a blow for Mercedes whose engines have been central to their dominance of the sport since the turbo-hybrid power units were introduced in 2014 and since which they have won all seven drivers’ and constructors’ championships. They have been virtually bulletproof in the past but in the latter part of this year plagued by reliability issues.

“We have degradation on the engine that until the end of the season is going to continue to decrease in power, we haven’t yet realised why,” said the team principal, Toto Wolff. “It’s degrading much more than the average of the past few years. If we keep the engine we are not going to be competitive [at the final two rounds] in Saudi and Abu Dhabi.”

This weekend is the final meeting at which F1 is trialling its sprint race format. Finishing positions in the 100km sprint set the grid and the top three also score 3-2-1 points respectively. Hamilton needs pole and victory in Saturday’s sprint to secure every point he can and minimise his grid drop on Sunday.

Pierre Gasly was fifth for AlphaTauri, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc sixth and seventh for Ferrari. Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo eighth and ninth for McLaren and Fernando Alonso in 10th for Alpine.

Esteban Ocon was in 11th for Alpine, Sebastian Vettel in 12th for Aston Martin and Yuki Tsunoda in 13th for AlphaTauri. Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi were in 14th and 15th for Alfa Romeo.

Lance Stroll was in 16th for Aston Martin and Nicholas Latifi and George Russell in 17th and 18th for Williams. Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin were in 19th and 20th for Haas.

MP Gove Calls For Lewis Hamilton Car Sponsorship U-Turn After Grenfell Tower Fire Outcry

Minister says he is ‘deeply disappointed’ about Mercedes deal with Kingspan, which made insulation used on tower

The Guardian UK, 4 DEC 2021.

Grenfell Tower Fire in 2017

Anger at the sponsoring of Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One car by a firm that made combustible insulation used on Grenfell Tower has intensified after a cabinet minister demanded a U-turn by Mercedes.

Michael Gove, the secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities, spoke out after Grenfell survivors branded the deal “truly shocking”. He said he was “deeply disappointed Mercedes are accepting sponsorship from cladding firm Kingspan … while the Grenfell inquiry is ongoing”.

Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One champion, is facing protests from Grenfell survivors over the deal that will see his car emblazoned with Kingspan’s logo starting at this weekend’s Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

Kingspan made some of the insulation used on the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower, which caught fire on 14 June 2017, killing 72 people. Survivors of the disaster and bereaved relatives demanded the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team drop the sponsorship deal, with one branding it “disgusting”.

After the Guardian revealed their anger, Gove tweeted on Thursday night: “The Grenfell community deserves better.”

The survivors’ group Grenfell United said in a letter on Thursday to the team boss, Toto Wolff: “Kingspan played a central role in inflicting the pain and suffering that we feel today, and there must be a degree of public censure for Kingspan’s recklessness and carelessness for human life.” It called on him to “immediately sever your relationship” with Kingspan.

Firefighters paid their respects in June at a memorial to the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire

The public inquiry into the disaster has heard that prior to Grenfell, Kingspan changed the composition of its plastic foam boards, and tests showed that they burned “like a raging inferno”.

But the company continued to use a previous test pass and sold them for use on buildings across the UK, including Grenfell, where a small amount were used. The public inquiry has heard that Kingspan executives also dismissed customers’ concerns about the boards’ fire safety, with a manager in one case saying: “[They] are getting me confused with someone who gives a dam [sic].”

The British driver, who is currently second in the world championship standings, has previously supported the Grenfell community. On the third anniversary of the fire, he posted on Instagram: “Today marks three years since the horrific Grenfell Tower fire in London. Remembering the 72 souls we lost and their loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragedy. #justiceforgrenfell.”

Mercedes’ decision to take the sponsorship, with the logo on the cars’ nose cone, was branded “disgusting” by Nabil Choucair, who lost six members of his family in the fire.

“I am very disappointed that someone who says he supports us, wants to advertise Kingspan, who contributed to the loss of innocent lives,” he said. “He should not accept it. You can’t support the community and say you respect the deceased and families and still take sponsorship like this.”

The Mercedes team stressed that drivers were not involved in sponsorship decisions, and said in a statement: “Our partner Kingspan has supported, and continues to support, the vitally important work of the inquiry to determine what went wrong and why in the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Our new partnership announced this week is centred on sustainability, and will support us in achieving our targets in this area.”

In 2020, the public inquiry into the disaster disclosed emails from a Kingspan technical manager after he was questioned by potential customers about the fire safety of the boards in which he said the customer “can go f#ck themselves, and if they are not careful we’ll sue the a#se [off ] them”.

Other emails revealed how technical team members joked in 2016 that claims about how safe the product was were “all lies” and it should be scrapped.

Plastic-filled aluminium cladding panels made by a different company, Arconic, were the main cause of the rapid spread of the Grenfell Tower fire, the inquiry has already found. The foam panels made mostly by Celotex and a small quantity of boards from Kingspan used as insulation “contributed to the rate and extent of vertical flame spread”, according to Sir Martin Moore-Bick, the chair of the inquiry.

Kingspan’s chief executive, Gene Murtagh, this year admitted “unacceptable conduct and historical process shortcomings, involving a small number of employees”, but said this did “not reflect the high standards of integrity and safety that are core Kingspan values”.

He said: “We have already implemented several important changes that demonstrate our commitment to product compliance and good governance. Our aims are clear: to reassure that safety takes precedence over all other considerations and to ensure this can never happen again.”

In a statement announcing the sponsorship deal, the Mercedes team said: “Kingspan’s products, systems and technologies address critical challenges in the built environment, including improving energy efficiency, reducing embodied carbon, driving circularity and conserving water. They have been used to help create high-performance buildings around the world for the team’s parent company, Mercedes-Benz.”

Wolff said he was “delighted to welcome Kingspan to our team”.

In a statement, Kingspan told the Guardian:

“Kingspan played no role in the design of the cladding system on Grenfell Tower, where its K15 product constituted approximately 5% of the insulation and was used as a substitute product without Kingspan’s knowledge in a system that was not compliant with the building regulations. The new partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team reflects the ambitious sustainability targets of both organisations.”

Lewis Hamilton WINS Thrilling Saudi Arabian Grand Prix After Max Verstappen Collision

Lewis Hamilton beat Max Verstappen in a chaotic and controversial Saudi Arabian Grand Prix to set up a winner-takes-all title finale in Abu Dhabi next weekend.

BBC News 6 DEC 2021.

In one of the most dramatic grands prix in years, the race was stopped twice, featured three starts and had an extraordinary series of events between the title contenders.

Hamilton won despite crashing into the back of Verstappen at one point during a race in which the Dutchman twice had to cede a position to the Mercedes driver that he had gained illegally.

'You have to be the smarter one' - Hamilton on Verstappen & beating school bullies

Hamilton is not comfortable racing in Saudi Arabia

And it ended with the two drivers tied on points heading into the last race of the season.

So much happened in the course of the race that it was hard to keep up, as the advantage swung wildly back and forth between Hamilton and Verstappen.

But in the defining moment, Verstappen was ordered to hand the lead to Hamilton because he had held it by forcing the seven-time champion off the track at Turn One with 13 laps to go.

It did not happen immediately though. After Red Bull were told to hand the lead to Hamilton, Verstappen slowed to do so on the run to the last corner and the Briton ran into the back of him and damaged his front wing.

They continued with Verstappen in the lead until the Dutchman did finally hand over the lead six laps later.

The nature of Verstappen's conduct will revive debate about whether it is fair for him to drive the way he does, always refusing to back down in wheel-to-wheel incidents, even when other drivers would recognise their rival had won the corner.

What on Earth Happened in One of The Greatest Races EVER?

The chaos began when Mick Schumacher crashed his Haas at the fast Turn 22 on lap 10.

Hamilton was leading at the time from Valtteri Bottas and Verstappen, and Mercedes pitted their drivers for tyres under the ensuing safety car.

Red Bull stayed out, which put Verstappen in the lead followed by Hamilton and Bottas. But then the race was stopped to repair the barriers.

That handed the advantage to Verstappen because the rules allow drivers to change tyres under a red flag period.

At the standing restart, Hamilton was quicker than Verstappen and ahead into the first corner.

But Verstappen re-passed him by going off the track through the right-hand part of the left-right chicane, forced Hamilton wide and Esteban Ocon's Alpine dived between them into second place.

The race was immediately stopped because of two more crashes, one in which Haas driver Nikita Mazepin rear-ended George Russell's Williams, and another where Red Bull's Sergio Perez crashed after a collision with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

There then followed extraordinary scenes when Red Bull negotiated with race director Michael Masi over which position Verstappen should be in at the re-start, eventually agreeing he would be third behind Ocon and Hamilton.

At the final start, Verstappen fitted medium tyres with Hamilton on the hard and, as Hamilton set himself up to pass Ocon into the first corner, Verstappen threw his Red Bull down the inside and took the lead.

The action began with Mick Schumacher's heavy shunt

Hamilton briefly dropped to third behind Ocon, but passed him at the next lap and set off after Verstappen.

Verstappens' over take after the second restart was supreme

It soon became obvious Hamilton had extra pace and the key part of the race soon unfolded.

Starting lap 37, the 36-year-old went for the outside of Verstappen into the first corner and was marginally ahead as they turned in.

But Verstappen refused to cede and both went off the track - a moment reminiscent of their controversial incident in Brazil two races ago.

Masi then told Red Bull Verstappen had to hand the position back but, as he tried to do so, Hamilton slowed behind him. Verstappen braked and Hamilton ran into the back of the Red Bull and damaged his front wing.

Verstappen said he did not understand why Hamilton did not go by, while Hamilton said he did not know why Verstappen had hit the brakes.

That incident was investigated by the stewards after the race and Verstappen was found to blame and given a 10-second penalty and two penalty points on his licence.

Verstappen continued in the lead, but finally let Hamilton by into the last corner again six laps later and the race was settled.

Verstappen goes into the final race as the championship leader, on win count back, which means Hamilton has to beat him to win an eighth world title.

Behind them, Bottas took third from Ocon on the run to the final corner. McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo, another driver to benefit from not stopping under the first safety car was fifth ahead of Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly and the Ferraris of Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jnr.

Driver of The Day

The fans gave it to Verstappen in the official F1 vote. He was extraordinary in some ways, especially the legal move to take the lead at the final restart. But totally uncompromising and unfair according to the rules at others. Hamilton was also strong, but what happened in their collision? No-one else is under consideration. This writer will have to take the fifth

What They Said

Race winner Lewis Hamilton: "I've been racing a long time and that was incredibly tough. I tried to be as sensible and tough as I could be and with all my experience just keeping the car on the track an staying clean.

"It was difficult. We had all sorts of things thrown at us so I'm just really proud of everyone and great with the crowd.

"Red Bull have some raw pace, it was hard to overtake them, we've done an amazing job. Valtteri did a great job for the team and this is for all the guys and girls back in the factory.

"It has been an amazing event. I felt very welcome here and people have been lovely here. The track is phenomenal, very difficult physically and mentally but you would not want it any other way."

On the incident when he hit the back of Verstappen: "I don't understand why he hit the brakes quite heavily so I ran into the back of him. It was a bit confusing."

Max Verstappen, who finished second: "It was quite eventful! A lot of things happened, which I don't fully agree with, but it is what it is.

"I tried to give it my all, I don't think the tyres were lasting. I was lacking a bit of rubber at the end, nevertheless, still second.

"I slowed down, I wanted to let him by, I was on the right but he didn't want to overtake and we touched. I don't really understand what happened there.

"It will be decided [at Abu Dhabi] hopefully we have a good weekend."

What Happens Next?

Possibly the most dramatic season in F1 history comes to its climax in Abu Dhabi, on a revised track. After this, who would dare predict the outcome?

The night race takes place in the Rea Sea port city of Jeddah

It was the first-ever Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

The sport paid tribute to the late Frank Williams before the race

F1: Verstappen WINS Title in Grand Prix Abu Dhabi Finale as Mercedes Protests Dismissed

Mercedes protests rejected by Formula 1 stewards as title goes to Max Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton will be back, says David Coulthard after controversial Abu Dhabi finale

BBC News 14 Dec 2021

Mercedes and Red Bull met with race officials for several hours after the grand prix

Formula 1 officials rejected two protests by Mercedes against the result of the controversial title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with the team set to appeal against one of those decisions.

Max Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes for the victory that won him the title after a late safety car.

Mercedes argued race director Michael Masi did not apply the rules correctly.

The team have lodged an intention to appeal against the decision relating to restarting the race for the final lap.

Officials said other rules gave Masi the power to act as he did.

Mercedes' second appeal was over Red Bull's Verstappen nosing ahead of Hamilton a number of times on the lap before the restart. They are not intending to appeal against that matter.

There needs to be clarity going forward

'A Verstappen can't lose' - the making of an F1 phenomenon

Verstappen relishes 'unbelievable' title win and wants Red Bull to dominate

How a dramatic F1 finale unfolded on social media

What was the row about?

The main controversy arose over the way Masi handled the decision to restart the race at the start of the final lap.

Whoever won the race would win the title and Hamilton had dominated throughout after passing Verstappen at the start and being allowed to keep the lead despite cutting the chicane when Verstappen tried to pass him back, on the grounds Hamilton had been forced off the track.

When Williams driver Nicholas Latifi crashed with five laps to go, the safety car was deployed and Verstappen pitted for new tyres. Hamilton could not because he would have lost the lead.

It put Verstappen right behind Hamilton on much fresher, grippier tyres, and the Dutchman passed Hamilton on the final lap.

Winning Formula? Hamilton, Verstappen & Netflix drive F1 resurgence

Why was it controversial?

At restarts after safety-car periods, lapped cars are normally allowed to pass the leaders and un-lap themselves so they do not interfere with the race.

Masi allowed the drivers between Hamilton and Verstappen to pass them, giving Verstappen a clear run at his rival. But did not do the same to the cars between Verstappen and third-placed Carlos Sainz's Ferrari.

Article 48.12 of the sporting regulations says: "If the clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the message 'lapped cars may now overtake' has been sent to all competitors via the official messaging system, any cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car."

At the same time, article 48.12 of the sporting regulations says that "once the last lapped car has passed the leader, the safety car will return to the pits at the end of the following lap". In this case, the race was started at the end of the same lap.

Had both rules been applied in this way, Mercedes argued, Hamilton would have won the race.

The stewards ruled that a separate rule gave Masi the power to control the safety car, which "includes its deployment and withdrawal". They added: "Although article 48.12 may not have been applied fully, in relation to the safety car returning to the pits at the end of the following lap, article 48.13 overrides that and once the message 'safety car in this lap' has been displayed, it is mandatory to withdraw the safety car at the end of that lap.

They added that Mercedes' request to remedy the matter by amending the result by taking the positions at the end of the penultimate lap "is a step that the stewards believe is effectively shortening the race retrospectively, and hence not appropriate".

What about overtaking under caution?

On the matter of Verstappen passing Hamilton before the race had re-started, the stewards said: "Although [Verstappen] did at one stage, for a very short period of time, move slightly in front of [Hamilton], at a time when both cars where accelerating and braking, it moved back behind and it was not in front when the Safety Car period ended [ie, at the line]."

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: "We never wanted to end up in front of the stewards. We don't go racing with barristers. It was a shame it ended up there but the stewards made the right call.

"We have talked about 'let them race'. [The late Mercedes non-executive chairman] Niki Lauda was the guy who pushed hard for it and we've always talked about not finishing races under safety cars. The race director in difficult circumstances made absolutely the right call."
He said Mercedes' protest "felt a little bit desperate".
