Superyacht Capsizes in Tornado Off Sicily Leaving One Dead 13 Missing

One dead, Britons missing after yacht sinks off Italian coast

BBC 19 AUG 2024

The 21 people onboard included 10 crew and 12 passengers - and also included American and Canadian nationals.

One man has died and six other people are missing after a sailing yacht sank off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday morning, the Italian fire and rescue service has said.

The 56m (183ft) yacht was flying a British flag and Britons are among those missing, Italian media has reported.

Emergency services rescued 15 people including a one-year-old child after the vessel encountered poor weather off the coast of Palermo.

A wreck has been identified at a depth of 50m, the fire brigade said, with divers searching for the missing people.

The body of the man, whose nationality has not yet been identified, was found outside the wreckage.

Eight of those rescued are receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian Coastguard said.

The British Foreign Office said it was aware of the incident and in contact with local authorities.

A statement from the Italian Coastguard said that a nearby boat offered assistance to people before emergency services arrived.

Local media have reported that the sailing yacht is called the Bayesian.

The Bayesian’s publicly available onboard tracker last transmitted near Porticello, just after 04:00 local time – shortly before rescue efforts reportedly began.

The ship is managed by Camper and Nicholsons International. A spokesperson told BBC Verify that they are currently “dealing with a situation onboard one of [their] managed vessels”, but would not confirm which vessel, or any further details.

Movies Moments Before Superyacht Disaster-Next 24 Hours are Critical

Moments Before Disaster: CCTV Captures Storm Ravaging £30m Luxury Superyacht Before It Sinks in 60 Seconds

Next 24 hours are critical to find people still alive

The boat is marooned 164ft below the surface on the seabed and is so deep that dive teams can only go down for 10 minutes at a time, with their efforts being hampered by furniture blocking the entrances.

MailOnline 21 AUG 2024

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship that rescued the 15 survivors of the Bayesian disaster, told the BBC: 'After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone'

The boat is marooned 164ft below the surface on the seabed and is so deep that dive teams can only go down for 10 minutes at a time, with their efforts being hampered by furniture blocking the entrances.

One expert has claimed that the ship, which is almost completely intact despite not being 'anchored in a safe place' before it sank, could have trapped pockets of air inside that might allow survivors to stay alive after the 'unprecedented' disaster.

Nick Sloane, an engineer who led the salvage operation on the Costa Concordia, said 'the next 24 hours are critical' if any of the missing people are to be found alive, with a time limit of 'two to three days' before anyone who has found an air pocket runs out of oxygen.

There have been instances in the past of people surviving for days underwater in these circumstances, but rescue divers have warned that they are prepared to find bodies instead of living, breathing survivors.

It is believed the ship sank after its mast - one of tallest in the world at an enormous 246ft-high - snapped during the brutal incident and keeled over, taking the hull beyond the 'down-flooding angle', according to nautical experts.

Engineer Nick Sloane, who led the salvage operation of the cruise ship Costa Concordia in 2012, told Sky News that despite this there may be a slim chance that there are survivors.

He said: 'They've got a very small window of time to try to find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued.

'You've got a maximum of two to three days to try to get someone out, so the next 24 hours are critical.

'If the yacht is on its side, it might have more air pockets than if it's upright. She's got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I'm sure.'

Superyacht: Five Bodies Found, One Person Remains Missing After Search

Identities not disclosed but UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter were among those onboard

The Guardian 22 AUG 2024

Divers scouring the wreck of the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday have found the bodies of five of the six missing passengers.

The UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his teenage daughter Hannah Lynch, the Morgan Stanley International chair, Jonathan Bloomer, his wife, Judy, and the Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, have been missing since the vessel went down on Monday morning.

The 56-metre yacht, named Bayesian and sailing under a British flag, was carrying 22 people and had anchored just offshore near the port of Porticello when it was hit by what was believed to be a tornado or waterspout.

The body of the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was located shortly after the vessel sank.

On Wednesday afternoon rescue authorities found the bodies of five of the missing people.

The director-general of Sicily’s civil protection agency, Salvo Cocina, confirmed that four bodies had been recovered by divers, with the fifth having been found but not yet brought back to shore.

Cocina said: “On behalf of myself and my colleagues, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and express our condolences to them at this difficult time.”

The Italian coastguard was working to confirm the identities, with sources telling the Guardian that Bloomer and Morvillo had been confirmed as among those recovered. One body remained unaccounted for.

Superyacht -Italian Authorities Launch Manslaughter Probe Into Sinking That Left Six People Dead

Italian authorities are “investigating shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable manslaughter” after the Bayesian yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning.

MailOnline 23 AUG 2024

A body believed to be that of Mike Lynch's daughter Hannah, the sixth and final person missing after a luxury yacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily, has been found, the Italian Coastguard said.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, previously said the search for Hannah has not been 'easy or quick', comparing the sunken yacht to an '18-storey building full of water'.

Mr Zagarola said: 'From the first moment, it has not been easy or quick to inspect the boat. Think of an 18-storey building full of water.'

Mr Lynch, his daughter, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the yacht sank at around 5am local time on Monday.
