Movies Hurricane Ida: Devastation-Louisiana Residents Begin Clean Up

Double Hurricane Threat -Laura and Marco Likely to Deliver Back-to-Back Landfalls on US Coast; Here's How Rare That Is

Tropical Storm Laura, is moving through the Caribbean islands whilst the other, Tropical Storm Marco, is moving through the Gulf of Mexico.

NHC / AP, 23 AUG 2020.

Laura and Marco are likely headed toward the U.S. Gulf Coast this week. It's not unusual for two storms to hit different parts of the Atlantic Basin at one time.It is very rare, however, for two storms or hurricanes to hit the mainland so close to each other. It's also very rare to have two Gulf storms in progress at once. That last happened in the 1950s.

Two tropical storms are advancing across the Caribbean posing potentially historic threats to the US Gulf Coast, with both projected to reach the coast at or close to hurricane force.

The current projected track for Tropical Storms Laura and Marco by the US National Hurricane Center puts both storms together in the Gulf on Tuesday, with Marco set to hit near the Texas-Louisiana border and Laura set to make landfall a little less than a day later.

Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher at Colorado State University, said two hurricanes had never appeared in the Gulf of Mexico at the same time, according to records going back to at least 1900, and the last time two tropical storms were in the Gulf together was in 1959.

Mr Klotzbach added that the last time two storms made landfall in the US within 24 hours of each other was in 1933.

On Saturday morning, Laura began flinging rain across Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with the Dominican Republic, Haiti and parts of Cuba expected to be drenched during the day as it moves westwards.

Wanda Vazquez, Puerto Rico’s governor, declared a state of emergency and warned the flooding could be worse than what Tropical Storm Isaias unleashed three weeks ago because the ground was now saturated.

“No one should be out on the streets,” Ms Vazquez said.

Officials said they were most concerned about the thousands of people in Puerto Rico who were still living under blue tarps after 2017's Hurricane Maria and the hundreds of families living along Puerto Rico's southern coast in homes damaged by a string of strong earthquakes this year.

Meanwhile, Marco was strengthening with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) and was expected to become a hurricane later in the day.

The Hurricane Center said it expected the storms to stay far enough apart to prevent direct interaction as the region braces for the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, which is forecast to be unusually active.

Both storms were expected to bring 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 cm) of rain to areas they were passing over or near, threatening widespread flooding across a vast region.

Hurricane Laura Brings 150mph Winds to Louisiana With More 'Catastrophic Conditions' to Come & Warnings That Death Toll Could Rise

Six fatalities recorded in Louisiana, including a teen girl who died after a tree fell on her home and a man who died of carbon monoxide poisoning

The Guardian UK, 28 AUG 2020.

The storm slammed into western Louisiana overnight with gusts of up to 150mph.

Louisiana residents who did not evacuate ahead of Hurricane Laura are calling for help, but authorities can't get to them

The northern eye wall of the storm moved over Cameron parish, on the Louisiana coast, at 1am ET, before slamming into the city of Lake Charles.

It is the strongest, fastest hurricane to hit Louisiana in more than a century.

Authorities had ordered coastal residents to get out, but not everyone did in an area which was devastated by Hurricane Rita in 2005. More than 450,000 homes were without power in Texas and Louisiana on Thursday morning.

So far, it looks as though easter Texas has dodged a bullet in terms of a direct hit from the hurricane, which had been on a path possibly to hit Houston.

UPDATE:

Hurricane Laura, the most powerful hurricane to strike the US this year, moved across Louisiana on a northerly path on Thursday, after threatening an “unsurvivable storm surge” on the coast and tropical force weather as far as Tennessee.

The storm slammed into western Louisiana overnight with gusts of up to 150mph and could cause “catastrophic conditions”, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Not until 11 hours after landfall did it finally weaken into a tropical storm.

Concern was growing for people in the path of the storm in Louisiana who did not evacuate on Wednesday. Louisiana recorded six fatalities as of Thursday afternoon, including a 14-year-old girl in Vernon parish who died after a tree fell on her home, a 24-year-old man who died of carbon monoxide poisoning inside his home and a man who drowned while aboard a sinking ship.

Laura blasted through the Louisiana coast and made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane early Thursday, wreaking damage on the industrial, casino city of Lake Charles. The storm has left more than 875,000 people without power.

The northern eyewall of the storm moved over Cameron parish, on the Louisiana coast, at 1am ET, before slamming into the city of Lake Charles.

Authorities had ordered coastal residents to get out, but not everyone did in an area devastated by Hurricane Rita in 2005. By Thursday morning, many buildings had partially collapsed or were missing chunks. Windows were blown out, awnings ripped away and trees split in half. At the local airport, planes were overturned, some on top of each other.

More than 875,000 people were left without power in the wake of the storm. Donald Trump said he would visit the Gulf Coast this weekend to tour the damage.

Laura headed north towards Shreveport, Louisiana, on Thursday rather than west across Texas as had been one of the leading predictions, meaning the city of Houston has probably dodged a bullet, although coastal Port Arthur is threatened by storm surge flooding.

Late on Thursday morning Edwards confirmed a chemical plant outside of Lake Charles had caught fire and advised residents in the area to shelter in place.

The blaze was confirmed at a BioLab plant in Westlake, a chlorine manufacturing facility, footage showed vast plumes of emissions billowing from plant.

Although authorities had urged residents in Louisiana municipalities dotted along the coastline to evacuate there were concerns that up to 150 people in Cameron parish – where the storm landed on the US mainland – had stayed in place, leading to fears of loss of life.

“We know anyone that stayed that close to the coast, we’ve got to pray for them, because looking at the storm surge, there would be little chance of survival,” Louisiana’s lieutenant governor, Billy Nungesser, told ABC’s Good Morning America.

Laura is the region’s most powerful hurricane in over a century, and ties for the fastest storm in Louisiana history. Experts warned earlier in the year that the hurricane season would be unusually active.

Meanwhile, evidence suggests that the Atlantic hurricane season is becoming worse due to warming waters linked to the climate crisis.

The fierce wind battered a tall building in Lake Charles, blowing out windows as glass as debris flew to the ground early Thursday, more than 30 miles from the ocean. Hours after landfall, the wind and rain were still blowing hard.

The highway into Lake Charles was littered with downed power lines and mobile home parks had been flattened by the high winds.

“There are some people still in town and people are calling … but there ain’t no way to get to them,” Tony Guillory, president of the Calcasieu parish police jury, said early on Thursday morning over the phone as he was battened down in a Lake Charles government building that was shaking from the storm.

Hurricane force winds are expected to continue through the morning, according to the NHC, although Laura had weakened to a category 2 hurricane by 7am ET.

The centre warned that an “unsurvivable storm surge with large and destructive waves will cause catastrophic damage from Sea Rim state park, Texas, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana”.

Austin fire officials helped east Texans and west Louisiana residents get settled at the Circuit of the Americas race track after evacuating low-lying areas about to get hit by Hurricane Laura on the Gulf coast.

The National Hurricane Center said Laura will move across south-western Louisiana this morning, and continue northward across the state through this afternoon.

The center of the storm is forecast to move over Arkansas tonight, the mid-Mississippi Valley on Friday, and the mid-Atlantic states on Saturday.

Forecasters said the storm surge could be 6 metres (20ft) deep and unsurvivable.

Authorities had implored coastal residents of Texas and Louisiana to evacuate, but many did not, before howling winds began buffeting trees back and forth in an area that was devastated by Hurricane Rita in 2005.

Social media footage showed torrents of rain rushing sideways past lampposts in Lake Charles, and streets covered with water closer to the coast.

The storm system arrived during high tide, drawing energy from the warm Gulf of Mexico.

Officials said at least 150 people rejected pleas to leave and planned to weather the storm in everything from elevated homes to recreational vehicles in coastal Cameron parish.

“It’s a very sad situation,” said Ashley Buller, the assistant director of emergency preparedness. “We did everything we could to encourage them to leave.”

The parts of Louisiana that were under evacuation orders included areas with high rates of Covid-19.

The Texas governor, Greg Abbott, and his Louisiana counterpart, feared the dire predictions were not resonating with the public, despite authorities putting more than 500,000 coastal residents under mandatory evacuation orders.

Hurricane warnings were issued from San Luis Pass in Texas to Intracoastal City in Louisiana, and reached inland for 200 miles. Storm surge warnings extended from Freeport in Texas to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

TRUMP Signs Autographs at FEMA Briefing in Hurricane-Battered Louisiana and Jokes That First Responders Could Sell Them for $10,000 Each on eBay

Donald Trump signed autographs and joked they could sell for $10,000 each on eBay during a press conference on Saturday

Trump held a conference in Lake Charles, Louisiana to speak following Hurricane Laura, which hit on 27 August as a Category 4. Sixteen people died in 150mph winds during WORST storm in 164 years

'Who’s going to get this one? Sell it tonight on eBay. $10,000,' Trump said as he signed and
passed out his autographs to local leaders

The move was slammed as insensitive as 16 people have been killed by the hurricane and thousands are left without homes, power and water in the state

On eBay Trump's autographs sell for as low as $5

Daily Mail UK, 31 AUG 2020.

'Come here fellas, get over here, I want a little power,' he Trump joked as he signed autographs
...

Trump signed a piece of paper and handed it to an official saying, 'You can sell this tonight on eBay. Who’s going to get this one? Sell it tonight on eBay. $10,000'

President Donald Trump signed autographs and joked they could sell for $10,000 each on eBay during a press conference held to discuss the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Laura.

At the end of a press conference with FEMA officials in Lake Charles, Louisiana on Saturday, Trump signed autographs for city officials and first responders.

'Come here fellas, get over here, I want a little power,' he joked, asking for pens to sign autographs.

Trump signed a piece of paper and handed it to an official saying,

'You can sell this tonight on eBay. Who’s going to get this one? Sell it tonight on eBay. $10,000.'

He then signed an autograph for a first responder saying,

'If I put your name down it loses a lot of value, so sell it tonight on eBay!'

But the president’s comments were unsettling to many people, especially as Louisiana and Texas are reeling from the blow of the Category 4 hurricane that killed 16.

Laura hit Louisiana on August 27 with winds as high as 150 mph and over nine feet storm surges in some places, leaving hundreds of thousands without water.

More than 400,000 homes and buildings were still without power in Louisiana as of Saturday morning.

The storm is estimated to have caused anywhere from $4 billion to $12 billion in damages to Louisiana and Texas, according to NPR.

'Trump uses his appearance in Hurricane pummeled LA to give out autographs and tells people to "sell them on eBay for $10,000".
No empathy. No class,' one Twitter user slammed.

This isn’t the first time Trump’s come under fire for bragging about the value of his autograph.

January he told eBay’s interim CEO that even 'senators and congressmen' put his autograph up for sale.

Update re: Hurricane Elsa: CAT 1 Storm Barrels Toward Caribbean & Florida

Devastating 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season Breaks All Records. Atlantic Basin Churns Out Record-Setting 29th Named Storm Theta

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The areas covered include the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Hurricane center monitoring 2 systems brewing in Atlantic as season peak approaches

NHC / AP, 10 NOV 2020.

The annual record for the number of major storms forming in the Atlantic has been shattered, with Subtropical Storm Theta becoming the 29th named event in a hyperactive hurricane season.

The US National Hurricane Center said the development of Theta, currently churning through the heart of the Atlantic, had broken a record that stood since 2005, when there were 28 named storms.

Yet another named storm could be in the works, with meteorologists tracking one through the Caribbean.

There have been so many big storms in 2020 that meteorologists exhausted their English-language list of names and had to turn to the Greek alphabet, rapidly burning through Alpha to Eta. In September, there were five storms lined up in the Atlantic at once.

The formation of Subtropical Storm Theta on Monday night pushed the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season into uncharted waters, with no other season in history having produced so many named storms.

2020 has now churned out 29 named storms, breaking the single-season record of 28 storms from the infamous 2005 season, which produced powerhouse hurricanes such as Katrina, Wilma and Rita.

As the busiest stretch of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season approaches, forecasters on Tuesday are monitoring two areas of disturbed weather out over the ocean.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami said Tuesday morning that one tropical wave is located over the eastern Caribbean Sea, while the second system brewing at sea is located about 900 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

These two tropical waves in the Atlantic basin will have the opportunity later this week to develop as we head into the historically most active two months of hurricane season.

While significant development of this system is still unlikely during the coming days as it moves 20 mph westward across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea, changes may come by the weekend. According to the NHC, there’s a 60% chance a tropical depression forms over the next five days.

The second, broad area of low pressure out over the Atlantic is producing a “concentrated area of showers and thunderstorm,” where favorable conditions exist for development.

A tropical depression is likely to form within the next couple of days while the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.

Forecasters said there’s a 70% chance within the next 48 hours and a 90% chance within the next five days.

Hurricane Elsa: CAT 1 Storm Barrels Toward The Caribbean and Takes Aim For Florida

STORM Elsa turned into a category 1 hurricane on Friday morning.

The Sun UK, 3 JUL 2021

A hurricane warning has been issued for Barbados, St Vincent, the Grenadines, and St Lucia.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Elsa could hit the US as early as Sunday evening – first hitting Florida, before making its way to Georgia and South Carolina.

Elsa was the earliest fifth named storm on record, beating out last year’s Eduardo which formed on 6 July, according to Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach.

ELSA'S PATH AND TIMING VERY RARE

Senior Research Associate at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School, Brian McNoldy, tweeted about how rare Hurricane Elsa's timing and path are.

"Just how extraordinary is it to have a hurricane in the eastern Caribbean before mid-July?" he wrote.

"Well, do 1933 and 2005 mean anything to you? Those are the only two years it happened before."

Tropical Storm Elsa: Cuba Reels as Storm Moves Towards Florida

After causing devastation in the Caribbean, Tropical Storm Elsa is moving north towards the Florida Keys.

BBC News, 6 JUL 2021.

More than 100,000 people in Cuba were evacuated before Elsa hit on Monday, causing mudslides and "flooding rains".

In the days before, the storm passed over the Dominican Republic and St Lucia, killing three people.

Officials in Florida have said they are "very hopeful" that they won't have to pause rescue efforts at the site of a collapsed building in Miami.

The demolition of the partially collapsed apartment block had been brought forward, for fear that Elsa might topple the building in an uncontrolled way.

Forecasters have since shifted the storm's likely path westward, suggesting that rather than hitting Florida directly, it will only skim the state's southwest coast.

The storm is expected to approach the Florida Keys on Tuesday.

Cuba's meteorological institute Insmet said the storm had passed through the island with winds of up to 100km/h, with "some stronger gusts".

It added that Elsa was expected to dump heavy rains over the island as it exited.

By 21:00 local time on Monday (01:00 GMT on Tuesday) Elsa had moved out of Cuba towards the Gulf of Mexico.

Jose Rubiera, Cuba's best known meteorologist, said on state television: "The rain is coming behind the centre so the fact it is moving out to sea along the northern coast between Havana and Mayabeque... does not mean the rain is over."

Rainfall of 13 to 25 cm (five to 10 inches) was forecast across parts of Cuba on Monday night, with up to 38 cm (15 inches) in specific areas, the NHC said.

The storm hit Cuba as the country battled its worst Covid-19 outbreak since the start of the pandemic, raising fears that the mass evacuations could lead to a further spike in infections.

On Friday, Elsa became the first hurricane of the Atlantic season before weakening to a tropical storm.

At least two people died on Saturday when walls collapsed in high winds in the Dominican Republic on Saturday.

The victims were a 15-year-old boy in Barahona, in the south of the country, and a 75-year-old woman west of the capital, Santo Domingo.

On the Eastern Caribbean island of St Lucia, one man also died, according to Prime Minister Allen Chastanet.

In Barbados, hundreds of homes have reportedly been damaged.

Hurricane Ida Could be Among Strongest to Hit Louisiana Since 1850s, Governor Warns

Thousands evacuate from New Orleans as storm bears down

Gridlock as New Orleans residents fled on Saturday night
Category 4 storm forecast to hit Sunday afternoon

The Guardian 29 AUG 2021

As Hurricane Ida barrelled towards the Louisiana coast, residents braced for a storm of potentially historic proportions due to arrive on the 16th anniversary of Katrina, the brutal hurricane that claimed more than 1,800 lives on America’s Gulf coast.

National Hurricane Centre officials said Ida had strengthened to a category 3 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico early on Sunday morning. It is forecast to make landfall on Sunday afternoon as a potential category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130mph (210 km/h), life-threatening storm surges and heavy rain.

State officials warned that Ida was likely to become one of the worst hurricanes in the history of Louisiana, a region known for torrid weather events.

“This will be one of the strongest hurricanes to hit anywhere in Louisiana since at least the 1850s,” said Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards at a press conference on Saturday. “We can also tell you your window of time is closing. It is rapidly closing.”

Tens of thousands of residents in coastal communities in south-east Louisiana were under mandatory evacuation orders. In New Orleans, the city placed those living outside the levee protection system under mandatory evacuation and urged all others to leave voluntarily. There was gridlock on the main highway leaving the city and vast queues at the Louis Armstrong international airport, as officials announced all flights would be cancelled on Sunday.

It was 29 August 2005 when New Orleans and other communities in the region were decimated by Katrina and the subsequent government failures in response. Hundreds of thousands of homes were lost after the city’s levee system failed, leading to catastrophic flooding. The city took years to recover.

On Saturday, Edwards pointed to billions of dollars in federal government investment in the city’s levees to argue the city was better prepared over a decade later.

“We’re not the same state we were 16 years ago,” Edwards said. “This system is going to be tested. The people of Louisiana are going to be tested. But we are resilient and tough people. And we’re going to get through this.”

In downtown New Orleans the streets were eerily quiet on Saturday evening as the city braced for tropical storm force winds to arrive from Sunday morning. In the city’s historic French Quarter, businesses were boarded up and on Bourbon St, usually the centre of nightlife in the city on weekends, bars were deserted.

The storm brought 150mph (240km/h) winds when it made landfall and those people who did not flee have been advised to shelter in place.

One person was killed when a tree fell on their home in Ascension Parish, in the Baton Rouge area.

Ida will test New Orleans' flood defences, strengthened after Hurricane Katrina killed 1,800 people in 2005.

President Joe Biden said Ida would be "life-threatening", with immense devastation likely beyond the coasts

Over one million homes in Louisiana are without power, and Mr Biden said it could take weeks to restore supplies.

The president has declared a major disaster in the state, releasing extra funds for rescue and recovery efforts.

Ida gathered strength over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico during the weekend.

It made landfall on Sunday south of New Orleans as a category four hurricane - meaning it would cause severe damage to buildings, trees and power lines. As it moves inland, Ida's winds have dropped to 95mph (155km/h), meaning it is now a category one storm.

In some places the storm surge could be as high as 16ft (4.8m), potentially submerging parts of the low-lying coastline.

Hurricane Ida: Louisiana Residents Begin Clean Up Amid Sweltering Heat

31 Aug 2021 Sky News

In the wake of Hurricane Ida, Louisiana is facing extensive power outages and fuel shortages which could last for weeks.

Fears of a repeat of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina back in 2005 have diminished - but in the sweltering summer heat, and with COVID cases still on the rise, there may be difficult times ahead the people of New Orleans.
