Sir Rod Stewart Snubs $1Million Offer to Perform in Qatar Over its Human Rights Record

Sir Rod Stewart, 77, entered into the debate over the World Cup being hosted in the Gulf country, where *homosexuality is illegal and can be punishable by death

BBC News 14 NOV 2022.

Sir Rod Stewart has revealed he snubbed a lucrative offer to perform in Qatar over its human rights record.

The rocker entered into the debate over the World Cup being hosted in the Gulf country, where *homosexuality is illegal and can be punishable by death.

And Sir Rod, 77, warned any gay fans planning to travel there to be wary.

He told The Sunday Times: “I was actually offered a lot of money, over $1million, to play there 15 months ago. I turned it down. It’s not right to go. And the Iranians should be out too for supplying arms. Tell you what, supporters have got to watch out, haven’t they?”

Sir Rod’s stance is in stark contrast to a host of British stars who are taking the Qatari cash to perform out there.

Robbie Williams, 48, is to play at the Doha Golf Club on December 8, 10 days before the World Cup final, as part of the Qatar Live series of concerts.

Paul O’Grady has slammed the singer for accepting the role. He said: “I’m surprised at Robbie. There’ll be a backlash by the LGBTQ community if he does perform. No amount of money would get me there.”

Robbie also came under fire for performing at the 2018 tournament in Russia as well as playing to oligarchs who were later sanctioned by the UK Government after Moscow invaded Ukraine.

Fatboy Slim, 59, real name Norman Cook, will be one of the headliners at Qatar’s MDLBeast Aravia festival, along with Jorja Smith, 25.

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, 70, has hit out at musicians taking Qatari money. He said: “It is incredibly hypocritical for these celebrities who have made a big deal of supporting LGBT rights to perform at events run by a viciously homophobic dictatorship.”

The Mirror revealed this month how Sir Rod was renting a house in *Berkshire for a family of seven Ukrainians who had fled the war. He is paying all the bills, too.

The singer has given two other *refugees jobs at his Essex mansion, including as a gardener and a housekeeper. Sir Rod has pledged to address the conflict on stage next month after he kicks off his UK tour this week.

Rod Stewart Quits Toxic US as Wife Penny Blasts Nuisance Way of Life

Sir Rod Stewart temporarily returned to the UK in 2016 with wife Penny Lancaster and their two sons Alastair, 17, and Aiden Patrick, 12, but has now decided to quit the US completely by putting his £56 million Beverly Hills mansion up for sale.

BBC 10 JUNE 2023

Rod Stewart has quit America and branded it “toxic”, after his wife Penny Lancaster grew sick of their “nuisance” lifestyle.

The palatial property was custom-designed in the 1990s

The 78-year-old rock icon has even put his £56 million mansion in Beverly Hills on the market, after he complained he no longer has any “privacy”.

The Maggie May hitmaker, who shares two sons - Alastair, 17, and Aiden Patrick, 12 - with wife Penny, has no plans to go back to the US and will stay in their £4 million Essex mansion instead.

Rod and his family returned to the UK in 2016, leaving their stunning European-style mansion in Los Angeles behind, but has no plans to return.

Rod bought the mansion in 1991 for £10 million, and has listed it for a whopping £56 million

Penny is said to have grown tired of travelling back and forth from the US to the UK, and wants to put all her focus on her dream job as a volunteer police officer where she has been working in London for the last two years.

The leggy model, 52, has also served as a panellist on Loose Women, and no longer wants to deal with the “nuisance” of commuting from Los Angeles to London.

“Penny loves the life she has made away from America and away from LA. She enjoys nothing more than working for the police force,” a source told the publication.

“She also finds traveling to be more of a nuisance than anything and wants to just live her life as a working mom,” they added.

Rod put the Beverly Hills mansion on the market with no plans to buy another mansion in the city, meaning he’ll make a tidy profit from the sale of the estate which he reportedly bought for £10 million in 1991.

He had the 33,000 square foot property designed by architect Richard Landry, and ornate Roman-style columns, wooden floors, marble tiles and crystal chandeliers are featured throughout the home.

The estate also includes a three-storey guesthouse, as well as two gyms and a swimming pool.

The rocker also built a five-a-side football pitch at his mansion

Outside, it boasts a five-a-side football pitch, with the crest of Rod's Beloved Celtic Football Club emblazoned on the grass.

Rod, who bought the mansion while married to ex-wife Rachel Hunter, focused on entertainment while designing his Beverly Hills home, and other features include a grand piano, a stunning outdoor seating area, a library, and a huge dining room that can sit 20 guests.

Despite his decision to stay permanently in the UK, it’s understood the musician will keep his home in Palm Beach, where he and his family spend Christmas.

Movies Rod Stewart Turns Down HUGE Saudi Deal Over Injustices & BRUTAL Silencing of Critics

Sir Rod Stewart Turns Down HUGE Saudi Arabia Offer to Shine a Light on Injustices

The star rejected the lucrative deal over its discrimination against women, LGBTQ+ people and the brutal silencing of its critics

BBC 12 OCT 2023

Sir Rod Stewart has turned down one of the biggest pay cheques of his career by refusing to perform in Saudi *Arabia because of the *kingdom’s human rights abuses.

The star rejected the lucrative deal over its discrimination against women, LGBTQ+ people and the brutal silencing of its critics. Sir Rod said:

“I’m grateful that I have a choice whether or not to perform in Saudi Arabia. So many citizens there have extremely limited choices… women, the LGBTQ community, the press.

“I’d like my choice not to go… to shine a light on the injustices there and ignite positive change.” A source close to the 78-year-old rocker said he has used his “moral compass in making the decision”. They added: “Rod was determined to do the right thing and couldn’t accept the offer, no matter how much money was on the table. Some things are more important.” Sir Rod previously told how he rejected £1million to play in Qatar.

The star rejected the lucrative deal

The singer’s team declined to comment on how much he was offered this time around but it’s understood the figure was “much higher.” Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Saudi Arabia, with the death penalty a possible punishment. There have been “consistent reports of discrimination and violence” against LGBTQ+ people in the country, according to Human Rights Watch.

Last week was also the five-year *anniversary of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Sir Rod told last year how he snubbed an offer to perform in Qatar over its similarly dismal human rights record. He said: “I was actually offered a lot of money, over $1million, to play there 15 months ago.

“I turned it down. It’s not right to go. And the Iranians should be out too for supplying arms. Tell you what, supporters have got to watch out, haven’t they?” Sir Rod’s stance comes despite other stars performing recently in Saudi Arabia, including Bruno Mars and rapper Iggy Azalea. Many football stars have come under fire for playing in the Saudi league, including former Liverpool player Jordan Henderson.

The singer’s team declined to comment on how much he was offered

Sir Rod’s decision to put the Saudi regime under the spotlight comes after he has previously told the Mirror he was determined to use his *knighthood for good. He said last year: “I usually keep all my charitable efforts nice and quiet and just do it. But I thought, ‘I am a knight, I have been given this knighthood because of the things I’ve achieved in my life and the charity work I’ve done over the years.’

“But that was the past. I want to be seen to be doing something now. I am a knight, I should be using my power to do something for people. I am sure that if there are people out there who see what I am doing, they will pick up some slack too.” And Sir Rod was true to his word as we revealed last year how he had started renting a house in Berkshire for a family of seven Ukrainians who had fled the war.

As well as paying their bills, he also gave two other refugees jobs at his Essex mansion, including as a gardener and a housekeeper. Sir Rod said that he was spurred into action after watching with wife Penny the horror in Ukraine play out on the evening news. He said at the time: “Words couldn’t describe what we were watching.

“The bombing of innocent children, the bombing of hospitals and *playgrounds. Like everyone else, we were completely beside ourselves. I don’t wish that one anyone, this is evil, pure evil.”

Rod Stewart Explains Why He Paid For MRI Scans

BBC 31 DEC 2023

Sir Rod Stewart Sells Items From His Home
to help cut NHS waiting lists.

Sir Rod Stewart has explained why he paid for a day's worth of MRI scans for patients at his local NHS hospital.

The singer, who lives in Essex, visited the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow as some scans were taking place.

Last month he called a live phone-in on Sky News and offered to pay for people to have hospital scans, having just returned from having a scan himself, to help reduce waiting times.

He said: "I've turned up to prove I've done it and I want to do it in lots of major cities."

Rod Stewart Also Paid For Pothole Repairs in Essex

A taxi driver has praised Rod Stewart for repairing potholes and said she is forced to constantly avoid them.

The singer, 77, posted videos on Instagram of him and some friends shovelling gravel near his home in Essex, claiming "nobody can be bothered to do it".

Oh Crap! Rod Stewart 79 and Wife Penny Lancaster Part

Rod Stewart, 79, and Penny Lancaster, 53, Reach Stalemate in Their Marriage.

He REJECTED offers on his $70 million Beverly Hills mansion and reneged on plans to relocate to the UK

Rod Stewart is Forced to Axe More Shows Amid Health Battle

MailOnline 30 AUG 2024

Veteran rocker, 79, is no longer trying to sell his palatial nine-bedroom property

Lancaster, 53, left fuming at Stewart's 360 on their plans to leave the US

Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster are desperately working on their 17-year marriage after the singer reneged on their plans to sell his $74 million Beverly Hills mansion and return full-time to the UK.

The veteran British rocker, 79, promised Lancaster, 53, they would pack up their lives in Los Angeles for their sprawling $5.8 million countryside estate in Harlow, Essex, after he revealed it was 'time to leave' the US last year.

But DailyMail.com has learned the pair are now at a 'stalemate,' with Stewart refusing to leave LA, and a furious Lancaster refusing to stay after he extended his Las Vegas residency and rejected two offers on the sprawling nine-bedroom property just over a month ago.

The news comes days after Lancaster - who has sons Alastair, 18, and Aiden, 13 with the Maggie May singer she married in 2007 - hinted at ?family issues.?

?Rod loves his life in LA and he flies back and forth to Vegas for his gigs,? a well-placed insider said. ?He gets to spend quality time with his grandchildren and hosts a banquet dinner almost every Sunday night at home for a crowd of his best friends.?

Sir Rod Stewart, 79, is Forced to Axe Further Shows Amid Health Battle

In a statement shared to his Instagram on Friday night, the rocker informed his fans he would be missing a planned gig that night and another on Saturday after testing positive for Covid-19.

The news comes days after Rod was forced to cancel his historic 200th Las Vegas show on Wednesday due to suffering from strep throat.

The Maggie May hitmaker was due to perform at Stateline in Nevada on Friday, followed by a gig at Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln, California - both of which have now been postponed.

The statement confirmed that the concerts have been moved to later this month, giving Rod time to recover from his illness.

60 Minutes Australia 9 DEC 2024

He describes himself as a simple man who got lucky.

But luck alone doesn't sell 200 million albums or keep you at the top of the music game for four decades.

No, Rod Stewart has lashings of talent and an appetite for hard work, as well. Charles Wooley was lucky enough to catch up with him at his home in London.
