Prince Harry has landed in Britain alone to be at King Charles' side after his father told him about his shock cancer diagnosis, raising hopes of a royal truce.

The Duke of Sussex is believed to have touched down on a British Airways flight to London Heathrow - but Meghan, Archie and Lilibet have stayed at home in California.

Harry boarded the 11-hour flight hours after Charles revealed he was ill.

But the Duchess of Sussex is believed to be at their Montecito mansion with their two children, Prince Archie , four, and Princess Lilibet, two, despite the threat of floods due to extreme weather in California this week.

Harry's transatlantic dash has raised hopes that his return to Britain will be used to heal wounds with King Charles and a chance to reach out to his brother Prince William.

His father is believed to be resting at Clarence House today ahead of treatment, with Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi seen leaving after a visit this morning. It is not known if Harry will stay in central London to be close to the King or stay at Windsor, most likely at the empty Frogmore Cottage .

Experts have said that they hope that Harry's trip to Britain is the 'sign of a truce' and that 'good news' of a heal in the rift in the Royal Family could come from the 'bad news' about the King's health.

The Princess of Wales, who underwent 'successful' planned abdominal surgery more than three weeks ago, is on the mend.

And, in a clear sign of her improvement, she was able to join her husband, Prince William, and their three children as they set off yesterday morning for a half-term holiday on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where the King is also convalescing.

'Catherine is recovering well,' a friend tells me. 'She was looking forward to a change of scene and will be able to take it easy in Norfolk while the children let off steam with William.'

The Princess, 42, was discharged 12 days ago from the London Clinic, where she had spent almost two weeks.

Since leaving hospital, without being photographed, Catherine has been at Adelaide Cottage, the family's four-bedroom home at Windsor Home Park.

Her children, Prince George, ten, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, all attend Lambrook school a 15-minute drive away in Berkshire. They broke up for a week's half-term holiday yesterday.

Catherine and her family will be staying at Anmer Hall, their ten-bedroom home on the Sandringham estate.

The Kings' GORGEOUS handsome equerry Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Thompson has been moved to a 'less public-facing role' after he reportedly did not enjoy the public attention he had been receiving.

Lt Col Thompson, dubbed 'the hot equerry' on social media, was once one of the late Queen's most senior bodyguards and now serves His Majesty.

He first won over admirers at the Queen's funeral, gaining a legion of fans thanks to his brooding good looks, but shot to unintentional fame during Charles' coronation.

The so-called 'Major Eye Candy' has since regularly accompanied the King and Royal Family and even joined their procession to church at Sandringham on Christmas Day last year.

But Lt Col Thompson, 40, was noticeably absent on Tuesday when Charles had his meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

A Palace source has since told The Times that while he 'remains senior equerry to the King and the Queen,' Lt Col Thompson will be serving in a 'more executive and less public-facing role'.

Constantine II was Greeces' last king, reigning for three years from 1964 before a military coup, and then a referendum, led to Greece becoming a republic.

Born on June 2, 1940, Constantine II was the only son of King Paul and Queen Frederica but had two sisters - Sofia, who served as Queen of Spain from 1975 to 2014, and Princess Irene.

When the new Crown Prince was just months old, he and his family were evacuated from Athens to Crete amid Italian and German invasion during World War II, but they soon had to flee further and landed in Egypt.

While the Constantine's father was brought to Britain by the summer of 1941, Constantine, his mother and his sisters moved to South Africa, where they remained for most of the remainder of the war.

Starting from the age of 15, Constantine served in his country's armed forces while attending the different military academies before studying law at the University of Athens.

His physical ability was proven to the eyes of the world in 1960, when he participated at the Olympic Games in Rome and won Gold in sailing.

The year he was crowned following a deterioration in his father's health, King Constantine married Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark and the pair went on to have five children: Alexia, Pavlos, Nikolaos, Theodora, and Philippos.

The youthful monarch was hugely popular at his accession, but that support faded with his involvement in bringing down the elected prime minister George Papandreou of the Centre Union party.

Still widely known in Greece as the 'apostasy' or defection from the ruling party of several politicians, the episode destabilised the constitutional order and led to a military coup in 1967.

Constantine eventually clashed with the military rulers and was forced into exile.

The dictatorship abolished the monarchy in 1973, while a referendum after democracy was restored in 1974 dashed any hopes Constantine had of reigning again.

But that was where the similarities ended, as the man equipped with good looks, charm, and a healthy amount of good fortune, entered royal life.

Having survived a suicide bombing in Baghdad, negotiate with bloodthirsty militias and equipped with a healthy dose of charm and good looks, some would say he was well equipped to deal with life in the public eye.

His sudden death at the age of 45 on Sunday has sent shockwaves through the Royal Family and brings to an end the incredible life of an 'exceptional man'.

The word incredible doesn't seem to do justice when it comes to describing some of Kingston's experiences in a life that was truly well-lived.

Not a member of the aristocracy, his family came from more humble beginnings - one of his acestors was a former ambassador to Denmark and a great-grandfather who was thrice mayor of Walsall in the West Midlands.

His father, educated at a secondary modern school, was a self-made man after becoming a hugely successful barrister specialising in planning law.

Kingston himself would graduate from Bristol University with a bachelor's in economic history, a degree he would put to good use in his careers.

Sent to Baghdad, he was seconded as a project manager for the International Centre for Reconciliation, which is based at Coventry Cathedral, to mediate in disputes between political, religious and tribal leaders and to negotiate the release of hostages.

A statement on behalf of Lady Gabriella and Mr Kingston's family said: 'It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Thomas Kingston, our beloved husband, son and brother.

'Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to the whole family and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing.'

King Charles and Queen Camilla have sent their 'most heartfelt thoughts and prayers' to Lady Kingston and Mr Kingston's family.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: 'The King and the Queen have been informed of Thomas's death and join Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and all those who knew him in grieving a much-loved member of the family.

'In particular, Their Majesties send their most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Gabriella and to all the Kingston family.'

Armed officers from the Metropolitan Police arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage, and he was taken to hospital and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The force said there were no reported injuries and the man has been bailed.

It added it is not treating the matter as terror-related.

The incident happened at the royal residence at 02:33 GMT on Saturday morning.

In a statement, the Met said: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."

It was one thing writing about the abuses of his childhood, Charles Spencer tells me, with half an ironic laugh; it’s quite another talking about them with strangers. When we meet in an office at his publisher, he is reeling a bit from this new fact of his life.

The more sensational chapters of his memoir of a deeply traumatic five years at the Northamptonshire prep school Maidwell Hall had been splashed all over the previous week’s Mail on Sunday.

The following morning, he had been a guest on Lorraine Kelly’s mid-morning TV sofa, raking over the painful detail of that long-buried past for the viewers. As a result, he says, apologising if he seems a bit strung out, he’s had two days of thumping headaches followed by vivid nightmares.

The early responses to his book about being sent away from home to be brutalised at school at eight years old have been instructive. On the one hand he’s had a mailbox of emails from fellow survivors, praising his courage in speaking up for the generations of “privileged” schoolboys and girls who, like him, suffered serial beatings and sexual assault in the closed world of boarding schools well before puberty.

On the other he’s experienced the default prurience of the tabloid press, which picked over his book for clickbait (ever since Spencer stood up in the pulpit at Westminster Abbey and blamed redtop journalists for hounding his sister, Diana, to death, he seems to have been considered fair game). The Sun, for example, thought the most appropriate headline for a book about the lasting harm of childhood trauma to be “Di Bro’s sex at 12 with hooker”.

The food writer William Sitwell, a near contemporary of Spencer’s at Maidwell and Eton, meanwhile, blithely dismissed the substance of the memoir in two columns in the Telegraph. In the first, Sitwell branded Spencer a traitor to his class:

“One of their own – an earl, uncle to princes, seriously landed, stately housed, replete with a deer park, fine furniture and fabulous paintings – is dishing the dirt from within…” he wrote. In the second, he argued, bizarrely, that “Spencer has not suggested that, beyond corporal punishment, he or anyone else was a victim of abuse”.

His book was written precisely to challenge that stubborn, unhinged belief among his peers that school regimes featuring daily beatings and endemic paedophilia “never did me any harm”. (Reading Sitwell’s piece I was reminded of an observation by Alex Renton, the journalist who has done much in recent years to shed light on the history of abuse at many of Britain’s most exclusive private schools.

Soon after Renton revealed the worst of what had happened to him as a child, he ran into an old school friend at a party: “Don’t stand near Alex,” the friend warned others present, “he’ll put his hand down your trousers.”)

The affecting power of Spencer’s account lies in its description of the way predatory violence was entirely normalised in his school years. Maidwell Hall was presented to wealthy parents as a kind of term-time paradise for young boys; once the family had departed down the gravel drive, Spencer writes, it became a hellish place.

The awful wound of homesickness was preyed upon by fearful teachers who bullied and thumped and caned vulnerable boys, or insisted on “special” naked swimming lessons; that was exacerbated by a senior matron obsessed with humiliating bedwetters, and a junior matron who molested 10-year-olds and had sex with 12-year-olds after lights out.

“I realised very early on that this was a horribly ugly subject,” Spencer says. “And I made a conscious effort to make the book as smooth a read as possible. As a result every now and then the reader might tread on a landmine and think: what the hell was that?”

The identities of his fellow pupils are protected in the book (the historian in him has given each of them the name of one of King Charles I’s regicides). He names the teachers he knows to have died, including Jack Porch, the headteacher who “retired early” at 51 for 'unspecified reasons'.

The Princess of Wales has announced tonight that she has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing 'preventative' chemotherapy.

In a deeply emotional video message, filmed at Windsor on Wednesday, Catherine revealed the news had come as a 'huge shock' and that she and William 'have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family'.

It came days after she was seen smiling with Prince William as they left their favourite farm shop close to their Windsor home.

Speaking from a bench surrounded by daffodils and spring blossom, she said: 'It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.

'As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.'

Catherine's cancer was discovered only after she underwent major abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in January. Kensington Palace has said it will not be sharing details of what kind of cancer the princess has, or what stage of cancer it is and has asked people not to speculate.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said the Princess of Wales has 'the love and support of the whole country' as her cancer battle was revealed this evening and good wishes came in from around the world.

Charles today held his first joint engagement with Prince William since 2022 and gave him command of Prince Harry's former Army regiment just as the Sussexes landed in the UK from Nigeria.

His Majesty has made his eldest son and heir Colonel-in-Chief of The Army Air Corps - the combat aviation arm of the British Army - at a ceremony at the Army Aviation Centre in Hampshire this afternoon.

Father and son laughed as Charles handed William an Army Air Corps beret and belt as the Prince of Wales took on his younger brother's former unit - the 662 Squadron - on the day Harry left Nigeria after a three-day pseudo-royal tour with his wife Meghan.

The Duke of Sussex served with 662 Sqn as an Apache helicopter pilot in Afghanistan, and it was widely thought he would have taken the role until he made the decision to step back from royal life in 2020 and emigrate to the US.

But in a speech in front of an Apache helicopter today, Charles did not mention Harry, who flew the same aircraft in Afghanistan during two tours of duty. Instead he said William was a 'very good pilot indeed' - before sparking laughter by saying: 'So that's encouraging'.

The King said: 'I do hope you'll go from strength to strength with the Prince of Wales as your new Colonel-in-Chief. I can't tell you how proud it has made me to have been involved with you all this time'.

William then donned his new uniform and blue beret before being handed an Army Air Corp tartan wrap for the Princess of Wales, a scarf for himself and three wooden helicopters for George, Charlotte and Louis. He later left in an Apache.

The event was happening as the Sussexes landed at London Heathrow this afternoon on a British Airways flight from Abuja. The couple are expected to board a plane to Los Angeles so they can be reunited with Archie and Lilibet in Montecito late tonight or tomorrow.

Last week Harry spent three days in London to mark the ten-year anniversary of the Invictus Games - but was unable to meet with his father because of the King's packed diary.

It has reportedly led to briefing and counter-briefing on both sides about why their paths never crossed. Catherine, Princess of Wales, has said she is making “good progress” in her recovery from cancer, and will make her first public appearance in months at the King’s official birthday celebration on Saturday.

Catherine, who revealed in March she has been diagnosed with cancer, said in a new statement on Friday that she has experienced “good days and bad days” while undergoing chemotherapy, and expects her treatment to continue “for a few more months.”

But she is expected to appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony with the royal family on Saturday at Trooping the Colour, King Charles III’s birthday parade, and Kensington Palace have released a new photo of the Princess taken earlier this week in Windsor.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days,” the Princess, who is often known as Kate, said in a personal message released on Friday.

“On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

“My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months,” Kate wrote. “On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.”

She said she is hoping to join some more engagements over the summer, but acknowledged she is “not out of the woods yet.”

Kate will travel down the Mall in a carriage during Saturday’s Trooping the Colour, accompanied by her children. She will watch the rest of the parade with her family nearby, and is expected to join fellow royals on the balcony.

It represents a significant moment in the Princess’s recovery, marking her first public appearance since Christmas Day – weeks before her cancer diagnosis.

But it does not represent a return to public duties, and throughout her recovery, any appearances will be taken alongside medical guidance and will be subject to change if required.

“I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months,” Kate wrote. “It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.”

“I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal.”

Kate first stepped away from public duties in January, following what Kensington Palace said at the time was surgery for a non-cancerous abdominal condition.

In March, amid speculation about her wellbeing, she revealed in a video message that she had been diagnosed with cancer after the operation.

“My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy,” she said in that update, adding she was in the early stages of that treatment.

The Emperor and Empress of Japan received a glittering ceremonial welcome of military pomp and pageantry in London today as their long-awaited state visit began.

King Charles III and Consort greeted their guests on Horse Guards Parade where some of the nation's most prestigious regiments were on display. The two heads of state warmly shook hands as did their wives under a large purpose-built pavilion that shielded them from the blistering summer sun amid 27C (81F) temperatures.

Prince William had escorted the Emperor and Empress from their overnight hotel in the capital, arriving almost ten minutes late in chauffeur driven cars.

But his wife the Princess of Wales, who returned briefly to the spotlight at Trooping the Colour on June 15 despite her cancer treatment, is not expected to take part in the visit this week.

At the end of the welcome ceremony today, there was a traditional carriage procession to Buckingham Palace where a private lunch was held. The two heads of state sat together in the lead coach, followed by Camilla and the Empress who has a chronic allergy to horse hair and therefore wore a white face mask as a precaution.

In the distance could be heard the low rumble of a 41-gun royal salute fired from Green Park by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and at the Tower of London the same number of volleys was fired by the Honourable Artillery Company.

The Japanese national anthem was played, and the Emperor inspected the guard of honour, accompanied by the King, who walked a few paces behind his guest.

The King wore a morning suit with a top hat, and he briefly removed his headwear as a mark of inspect when he passed the regimental colours.

These included Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, Home Secretary James Cleverly and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley.

Uncovered: 428-Year-Old Secret Dossier Reveals Elizabeth I’s Network of Spies

A list compiled by spymaster Robert Cecil gives an insight into the beginnings of the secret service, says historian

For more than a century, it lay undisturbed in the National Archives: a single sheet of paper, headed The names of the Intelligencers, with the power to unveil a hidden network of secret Elizabethan spies.

Now, the 428-year-old secret dossier of Robert Cecil, spymaster to Elizabeth I and the man who discovered the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, has been pieced together using this key document. It reveals how Cecil set up and used a clandestine espionage network to spy on European monarchs for the English throne.

The network was so extensive that the historian Stephen Alford – who has been hunting down Elizabethan spies and painstakingly reconstructing Cecil’s illicit files about each “intelligencer” ever since he found the list in the archives nearly 15 years ago – thinks it was “the first properly organised secret service” in England.

“There were lots of names listed – some I recognised, people in or close to the privy council of Elizabeth I, and lots I didn’t know. Eventually, I realised that the numbers next to their names were folio numbers and that this was really a contents page. That was a lightbulb moment,” said Alford, professor of early modern British history at the University of Leeds.

He has written a book on his discoveries, All His Spies: The Secret World of Robert Cecil, which is being published by Penguin. The previously overlooked document, which Alford thinks Cecil began to write in 1596, had been placed in a “miscellaneous” folder by Victorian archivists.

“I think I was probably the first scholar to take an interest in it,” said Alford. “The Victorians had a habit, where if they came across papers that didn’t make sense to them, that were a little mysterious and couldn’t be filed away in a neat and tidy way, they would scratch their heads and then stick them in a miscellaneous folder and ignore them. And that’s where historians now find really interesting stuff.”

He began scouring the archives for any paper which looked relevant and had “a little number in the corner” that matched the intelligencer’s number on the contents page. “I just had to hope that the edges of the paper hadn’t been torn. And because the manuscripts were so poorly kept before the 19th century – often stuffed into the chambers in the Tower of London – rats and mice got to some as well. Often, they were stained, sometimes you see teeth marks. It’s a miracle these papers survived at all.”

As he gradually built up each intelligencer’s folio, he began to see a pattern. “Each was like an office file, I think. It was on hand in Cecil’s office for when reports came in, or to keep a record of payments made.”

Most spies in the 16th century worked for courtiers and were normally “a bunch of rogues”, Alford said, who would turn up haphazardly and volunteer information on an ad hoc basis. The intelligencers on this list were different: “These were serious individuals, a lot of them international merchants, who were on the payroll.”

Previously, scholars thought that Cecil, whose official role was secretary of state to Elizabeth, had a “few spies, here and there”. But Alford’s research indicates that he had an organised network of more than 20 spies, in Lisbon, Calais, Brussels, Seville, Rome, Amsterdam, Scotland, Sweden and unspecified locations elsewhere. “He chose merchants because they travel, can read and write, speak European languages and have networks of their own.”

Each agent was paid to secretly send coded reports to Cecil, who decrypted them using the individual, bespoke cypher in each of their files, which also contained a record of their payments and all their secret communications. “By modern standards, the cyphers are pretty unsophisticated – they’ll suggest different letters for letters of the alphabets, or symbols or diagrams for the Queen or King of Spain, for example,” he said.

After the Spanish Armada of 1588, when the Catholic Philip II of Spain had tried to invade Protestant England and overthrow Elizabeth, Cecil was particularly worried about the possibility of a second Spanish naval attack in the 1590s. “There’s one crew of spies – two brothers – keeping an eye on the Atlantic coast, somewhere near Biarritz, to see if there are any Spanish ships sailing in a new armada or making military and naval preparations.

They pretended they were shipping contraband goods between France and Spain, but actually they were going into ports and making reports on naval activity, counting ships and working out what was going on.”

The handwriting in the different files indicates that Cecil relied on a small “trusted group of individuals” to help him run his clandestine operation.

“Cecil was running a well-funded, organised system and that makes an enormous difference to how he is able to operate politically – it really gives him proper information, not haphazard news or gossip,” said Alford.

“It’s the first English secret service.”

A clip of Prince William apparently seen whizzing around Windsor Castle on an electric scooter has delighted royal watchers.

The video, shared on social media appeared to show the eco-friendly Prince of Wales, 42, zooming around the royal residence in Berkshire on July 4.

Dressed in a blue jumper with a white shirt underneath, teamed with black trousers, the future King looked effortlessly cool in a pair of stylish sunglasses.

It was first reported in July 2023 that the father-of-three had invested in an electric scooter to zip around the Windsor estate.

He made the purchase to speed up the three-mile round trip from the Wales family's Adelaide Cottage to see his father King Charles at Windsor Castle, according to reports.

He is said to have opted for a green transport option with the 10mph scooter to whizz around the 655-acre estate.

Instead of that famous view looking up at the Buckingham Palace balcony, visitors for the first time will be able to look down from the inside.

But they won't be able to step out on to the balcony itself - and when you visit you can see why.

It's surprisingly narrow and the railings are below waist height, in a way that would send any health and safety officers into a royal panic.

The introduction of tours to this previously private section of the palace is part of a broader ambition to make royal residences more open to the public.

The east wing, getting its first tourists, is the main facade of the palace, where tourists gather outside to watch Changing of the Guard - it's the view you see on the postcards.

It's not cheap to look round, costing £75, but has already completely sold out for this year. And this summer's inaugural visitors will be in guided groups of 20, separate to the existing more general tour of the palace's state rooms.

In this more intimate version of the tour, none of the items on show are roped off from visitors. The furniture doesn't have 'keep off' signs.

It makes it feel more like a living building rather than a museum, but there's no escaping the gradual gift-shopification of the palace.

It's a mix of an historic setting for grand events, an office block and a tourist attraction, but at the moment it still seems a way off from being where any of the royals are likely to live.

Visiting royals don't stay here either any more. During their recent state visit the Emperor and Empress of Japan stayed in Claridge's Hotel.

There is an ongoing £369m project to renovate the palace complex, not just the gilded surfaces, but the basics of the plumbing and wiring on what is a huge set of ageing buildings. Once you step away from the glitzy state rooms you never seem far from scaffolding and repair works.

Renovating the east wing alone meant removing and conserving 3,500 separate items, including historic furniture and works of art. And the tour only includes only a relatively small part of that wing.

But the sell-out tours show the public demand and while there will be art lovers among the visitors, people will also be coming to see for themselves something they might have watched on television or imagined through the Crown.

They can stand in the elegant Yellow Drawing room, used for many audiences and the setting of a Christmas broadcast by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

From Rough Sleeping to Advising Prince William

Sabrina Cohen-Hatton has gone from rough sleeping as a teenager to visiting the Prince of Wales in Windsor Castle to give him advice on tackling homelessness.

She was able to give her own story to Prince William as proof that homeless people should not be "written off".

"I sit in front of you now with a job, a home, a family and a PhD," says Sabrina, who works as a fire service chief.

Prince William will mark the first year of his Homewards project with a visit to Lambeth in south London where he will say: "It is possible to end homelessness."

The prince will send the message that there is nothing inevitable about homelessness and that it shouldn't be normalised.

When he meets Homewards representatives on Thursday he will say: “Homelessness is a complex societal issue, and one that touches the lives of far too many people in our society. However, I truly believe that it can be ended."

Homewards is a five-year project based around six areas around the UK.

That includes Newport in South Wales - and as a 15- and 16-year-old that was where Sabrina was sleeping rough, after the death of a parent and problems at home.

Her way out was selling the Big Issue - "I credit them with saving my life" - and once she had secure accommodation she was able to get a job in the fire service, which became her career.

But she was able to tell Prince William and the Homewards project about what was needed.

"There were lots of closed doors in my face," she says. Even when support was meant to be available, she says in practice it can be hard for homeless people to have the confidence to access it.

Or there can be practical barriers. She says she relied on her dog, called Menace, but many hostels wouldn't let people stay with pets.

She went on to become chief fire officer of West Sussex and has spoken widely about her own journey, including this latest role as an advocate for Homewards.

Sabrina says Prince William showed a lot of "empathy" towards the issue of homelessness

The homelessness project, operating in Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Lambeth, Newport, Sheffield and Northern Ireland, wants to find successful approaches that can be replicated elsewhere.

There are links with employers about helping people into work. A partnership with Homebase provides starter packs of furniture to help those moving from homelessness into accommodation.

There are efforts to identify sofa-surfing and addressing links between relationship breakdown and homelessness.

Putting housing officers in schools has been tried to identify young people who might be at risk.

There is a push to change attitudes towards homelessness - and Sabrina talked about the need to get rid of the stigma.

King Charles III has returned to Buckingham Palace after delivering Sir Keir Starmers' plans for Britain at the historic State Opening of Parliament in what was the first speech from the throne under a Labour government for 14 years.

The 75-year-old monarch saluted from his horse-drawn carriage as he and Camilla were welcomed back to the royal residence with the national anthem, drawing a day of pomp, pageantry and centuries-old tradition to a close.

Sir Keir's new Labour government used the King's Speech to say they would 'fix the foundations of this nation' but conceded that 'rebuilding our country will not happen overnight'.

Charles and Camilla - who is celebrating her 77th birthday today - set off from Buckingham Palace at 11am before they were escorted by the Household Calvary for a resplendent horse-drawn procession down The Mall.

The King and Camilla, dressed in their finest royal regalia, were then taken to Parliament in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, pulled by six grey horses in the glorious sunshine.

The King then entered the House of Lords just before 11.30am, where they led a royal procession holding each other's hands before taking their seats on their thrones.

The historic day is made up of a series of bizarre yet memorable rituals, including the role of Black Rod - the senior official responsible for maintaining order at the House of Lords.

Black Rod Sarah Clarke made her way to the House of Commons to fetch MPs at around 11.30am before having the door slammed in her face. She then knocked three times with a ceremonial staff to gain entry, where she called upon the MPs to follow her back to the Lords.

Black Rod acts as secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain, with responsibility for major ceremonial events in the Palace of Westminster.

The position is appointed by the monarch on the recommendation of a selection panel chaired by the Lord Speaker. In 2018, Ms Clarke became the first female Black Rod in the position's 650-year history.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle led MPs to the Lords, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer walking alongside Conservative leader Rishi Sunak. The pair chatted and laughed as they left the Commons together - less than two weeks after Sir Keir took over from Mr Sunak as Prime Minister.

As MPs took their seats, Charles, sitting in the Sovereigns' Throne, then started unveiling Sir Keir's plans for Britain in his speech. His speech ran to 1,421 words, making it the longest monarchs' speech at a State Opening of Parliament since 2003.

Queen Elizabeth found Donald Trump 'very rude', a sensational new biography of the late monarch claims.

The sovereign, who hosted the ex-US president twice during her reign, is said to have 'particularly disliked' the way he looked over her shoulder as if 'in search of others more interesting'.

She also mused over his relationship with his wife Melania and said she believed they must have 'some sort of arrangement'.

He reports the conversation occurred at a lunch 'weeks after' one of Trumps visits. She first met him in 2018, a year after he was inaugurated as the 45th US President.

Trump was not worthy of a 'state visit' but classed as a 'working visit', which meant little in the way of pomp and pageantry and no state banquet.

His meeting with the Queen instead took place over tea at Windsor Castle, with notably no other senior royals present, but did involve the inspection of a guard of honour. However Trump did get his much longed for State Visit the following year.

The trip was blunder-free until he gave a toast praising her as a 'great, great woman' and placed his hand on her back – breaking protocol.

Memorably, Trump was said to have kept the then 92-year-old monarch waiting for ten minutes in 27C (80F) heat and repeatedly walked in front of her as they inspected the guard of honour, leaving her trailing behind.

He then abruptly stopped and forced her to sidestep to get alongside him.

Prince William and former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had a giggly moment together during the ceremony in which he made her a dame.

Ardern has been working with William as a trustee of his Earthshot Prize, which awards $1 million grants to scale up projects acting to repair, maintain and preserve the environment.

And she was made a Dame Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the state at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

Ardern was on a lengthy list of people whose investitures William conducted and the pair shared some warm words with each other as he adorned her a red sash suspended from her right shoulder to her waist, where he fastened the badge of the order.

The Royal British Legion event featured a performance from Sir Tom Jones, who performed I Won't Crumble With You If I Fall with the Royal Air Force band, and salutes by military personnel.

The royal family stood at points to clap for veterans, and later in the night joined in the singing of a hymn.

The concert and the service at the Cenotaph on Sunday are among the most important events on the royal calendar.

Masked Men Break Into UK's Windsor Castle Estate

Two masked men broke into Britains royal Windsor Castle estate last month and stole two vehicles from a barn, the Sun newspaper reported on Monday.

Prince William and his family were believed to be at Adelaide Cottage, part of the Windsor Castle estate, the Sun reported.

The men used a stolen truck to break through a security gate at night and then scaled a six-foot fence, the paper said. Police said officers were called to a report of a burglary on Crown Estate land in Windsor, west of London, just before midnight on 13 Oct.

"Offenders entered a farm building and made off with a black Isuzu pick-up and a red quad bike. They then made off towards the Old Windsor/Datchet area," Thames Valley Police told the newspaper. "No arrests have been made at this stage and an investigation is ongoing."

Windsor Castle previously faced a security scare in 2021 when authorities arrested a man with a crossbow in the grounds of the castle who said he had wanted to kill Queen Elizabeth.

The Princess of Wales today arrived at Westminster Abbey to lead her family at her Christmas carol concert after the most difficult year of her life.

This time last year Kate, 42, was focusing on her work and children, and looking forward to the festive season with little inclination of what was to come.

Weeks later she underwent major abdominal surgery in hospital, after which doctors broke the news that they had found evidence of cancer and advised her to undergo a gruelling course of preventative chemotherapy.

Kate and her husband Prince William found their lives turned upside down.

Now, having completed her treatment, the royal is beginning to return to public duties and will hold her fourth ?Together At Christmas? carol service at historic Westminster Abbey, which will be televised by ITV on Christmas Eve.

The princess, who has been ?hands on? over every aspect of the service and held regular planning meetings at Windsor, arrived on her own at 4pm to view the abbey and oversee last minute arrangements.

Proud David Beckham gave a reassuring hand to his wife Victoria as they joined the royals at King's glittering state banquet for Qatar on Tuesday night.

The former footballer, 49, attended the event with his fashion designer wife, 50, who looked slightly nervous at one point while walking before David reassuringly took her hand.

King Charles and Consort were hosting a lavish reception for the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the first of his three wives, Sheikha Jawaher, who are in the country for a two-day state visit.

It is understood that former England star David was invited because of his role as an ambassador for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

He was seated next to Naseer Al-Khelaifi, a Qatari businessman and President of French football club PSG - where Beckham ended his high-profile career - ensuring the two men had much to talk about.

At the event Victoria looked stunning in a figure-hugging black dress no doubt from her own fashion brand.

The seating plan is organised by Buckingham Palaces Master of the Households Department in conjunction with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who fund the State Visit.

And it will surely add only fuel to the fire of speculation that Beckham will be knighted in the near future.

The banquet was the dazzling culmination of a day of pomp and pageantry, honouring the Emir and his wife, Sheikha Jawaher

Other senior royals present included Princess Anne, who was seated on the top table with the King, Consort and Prince of Wales, as well as the Qatari dignitaries. Consort Camilla and Princess Anne looked miserable as usual

The Prince and Princess of Wales have revealed a Christmas card with a personal significance, using a picture taken from the video released when Catherine announced the end of her chemotherapy.

The emotional video, with its emphasis on family and supporting each other in difficult times, was filmed in Norfolk in August.

The personal video from Catherine, at the end of treatment after her cancer diagnosis, had the message out of darkness can come light.

The image used for this years' card, by film maker Will Warr, shows Prince William and Catherine and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The card, with its very personal connections to a difficult year for the couple, has already been sent out in the post, but has now been revealed on social media.

Prince William said this has been a brutal time for their family and described the past year as the hardest year of his life.

Prince William was warmly welcomed by Estonias president as he kicked off a two day trip to show his support for Russias neighbour in the face of Putins aggression.

The Prince of Wales was all smiles as he shook hands with Alar Karis at the Presidential Palace Kadriorg. He arrived at 2.35pm local time and walked up a grand staircase

The Prince was directed to sign the guest book with a gold pen as Mr Karis joked: Hopefully the pen will work. William replied, Oh, hopefully, before explaining: Im left-handed.

He sat at an oak table on a navy blue chair that was embroidered with gold flowers and gold stripes. Next to the table were the flags of Estonia and the United Kingdom.

He walked through the oak-panelled Presidential doors and headed into the 100 year old palaces Blue Cabinet room to have his meeting.

The pair had tea, coffee as president Mr Karis told him: We did fight for our independence and later on as well with Afghanistan, and now. With British troops at Tapa we really really appreciate it adding: This morning the Defence Minister said he'd probably send some troops to Ukraine. Hopefully some of these troops will stay also.

In a statement released on Thursday evening, Buckingham Palace said that following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer, he had experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital

The monarch, 76, was tonight back at Clarence House working away as usual, with sources describing it as a most minor bump in a road thats very much heading in the right direction.

However in order to protect and prioritise his continued very positive recovery he has regretfully cancelled a string of engagements in Birmingham tomorrow.

Sources insisted there was no drama and described the brief trip to hospital this evening as being connected to his treatment programme.

But it is a concerning reminder that more than a year after announcing his had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer, that the king is still undergoing treatment while undertaking a busy diary of public engagements.

A source added: As many can vouch, such things are not unexpected with these kind of conditions.

His Majesty has been able to undertake a full programme of public and State duties, and that position remains unaltered, sources stress.

But todays side effects did necessitate a brief hospital visit and a few adjustments to his immediate diary programme.

The Duke of Sussex has said it is impossible for him to bring his wife and children back to the UK after losing his legal challenge over personal security, and revealed he would love a reconciliation with his family

In an emotional interview with the BBC, Prince Harry said his father, King Charles, would not speak to him because of the security stuff, but said he wanted reconciliation as life was precious and he did not know how long his father, who has been diagnosed with cancer, had left to live.

Speaking in California, where he now lives, Harry, 40, said: For the time being, its impossible for me to take my family back to the UK safely and my father to meet his grandchildren

He added: I cant see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point ?

I love my country. I always have done, despite what some people in that country have done. I miss the UK. And its really quite sad I wont be able to show my children my homeland.

Harry had sought to overturn changes to his security provision while in the UK, which were made after he and the Duchess of Sussex stepped away from royal duties in 2020.

He was offered bespoke security, which he felt was inferior and claimed the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures known as Ravec, which authorises security measures, had breached its own terms of reference by not conducting a risk management board RMB before making the decision.

He insisted his father could help resolve the issue, though he had not asked him to intervene. I can only come to the UK safely if I am invited, and there is a lot of control and ability in my fathers hands.

Ultimately, this whole thing could be resolved through him, not by intervening, but by stepping aside and allowing the experts to do what is necessary and to carry out an RMB, he said.

It is understood it would have been constitutionally improper for the king to intervene while the matter was being considered by the government and reviewed by the courts.

Although the royal household provides representation and input into the Ravec decision, Fridays judgment laid out that the chair of the Ravec committee was the decision maker on the provision of security. Royal private offices and private secretaries should be consulted as to the practicalities of the protection measures agreed, the ruling said

Harry said, This is a good old fashioned establishment stitch up. And thats what it feels like.

I would ask Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, to look at this very, very carefully and I would ask her to review Ravec and its members, because if it is an expert body, then what is the royal households role there if it is not to influence and decide what they want for the members of their household?

Of course some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book, of course they will never forgive me for lots of things, but I would love reconciliation with my family.

While the royal visit signals strong support in itself, many believe that as Canadas head of state, Charles should go further and remind Mr Trump that the country is off limits.

Despite such constraints, there is a growing feeling that were he to add even a solitary strategically judged phrase of his own it would speak volumes.

Artur Wilczynski, a former Canadian ambassador, told The Mail on Sunday: I would like to hear the King read a speech that says Canada is and will continue to be a strong, vibrant and independent nation and that Canada is not for sale at any price.

The King and Camilla received a warm welcome when they arrived in Ottawa, on his first trip to Canada since the start of his reign.

Soon after arriving, the King, who is Canadas head of state, held a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, recently elected on a wave of anti Trump public opinion.

On Monday afternoon, the King and Carney held a meeting at Rideau Hall, the residence of Canadas governor general, with both men sitting in front of Canadian flags.

There were also meetings with leaders of Canadas indigenous and First Nations groups, including Cindy Woodhouse, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Looking relaxed in the Ottawa sunshine, the King received an enthusiastic reception from onlookers, who cheered and crowded round to shake hands with him.

Canada feels threatened and scared. It is very important he is here, said Theresa McKnight, from Mississauga, Ontario.

Her sister Dianne St Louis from near Toronto agreed: Its critical. It means a great deal to have the King standing side by side with Canadians.

But the main focus of this trip will be the historic speech on Tuesday, with the prospect of the King delivering the Canadian governments message of rejecting calls to become the US 51st state.

It is also a diplomatic balancing act because in his role as head of state of the UK, the King has been part of an effort to keep good relations with Trump, including inviting him for a second state visit.

The king also alluded to the last time a monarch opened a new parliament nearly seven decades earlier, when his late mother visited Ottawa.

The dangerous loner who tried to kidnap Princess Anne is back on the streets unrepentant and still obsessed.

Mentally ill Ian Ball, then 26, stalked the Princess Royal one evening in March 1974, before ambushing her chauffeur driven limousine and shooting four men who came to her aid.

Appearing at the Old Bailey, he was detained without limit of time under the Mental Health Act after admitting attempted kidnap and two attempted murders but the Daily Mail can reveal he is out of Broadmoor and is now campaigning to clear his name.

He has been released on probation and can roam freely despite remaining fixated on that night on The Mall.

After being released quietly in 2019, Ball self published a disturbing book about the events of 1974 and visits old haunts in a bid to prove his innocence, despite having pleaded guilty in court.

In an extraordinary interview with the Daily Mail, Ball, now 77, said Im an innocent, sane man because I had good reason to believe the gunpowder had been taken out of the bullets and another girl had been substituted for Princess Anne

He claims he was wrongfully jailed by the upper classes speculating that the late Queen was the ring leader, and saying they had kept an innocent, sane man in a criminal lunatic asylum because he is a very dangerous working class dissenter and a grave threat to their luxurious way of living

Ball insisted it would be a waste of time to apologise to the men he shot, and said of Anne, who had two guns waved in her face She wasnt bothered on the night... I didnt scare her. I was more scared than she was.

Princess Anne and royal security chiefs were told of his release. Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

But a relative of Balls wept on learning he was back to obsessing over the case. The relation, who asked not to be named, said It would seem he really is not very well and the obsession with all this has overtaken him again. I knew he was out of Broadmoor, but some members of the family didnt, and it will come as a shock to them.

He has written to me a couple of times and seemed much better. There was nothing to indicate he still had serious mental health problems. He had been doing normal things. He had been abroad on holiday, he was going to the theatre, everyday activities.

I understood he was living in some sort of hostel, and you would assume he is still receiving some sort of treatment.

When he appeared at the Old Bailey in May 1974, two months after the incident, Ball made no attempt to deny attempted kidnap, attempting to murder two policemen, and wounding a chauffeur and a journalist.

He admitted skidding his Ford Escort to a halt in front of Princess Annes car, then holding her up at gunpoint, grabbing her arm and threatening to shoot her.

At one stage, a tug of war developed over the princess, with Ball pulling her right arm, and her husband, Captain Mark Phillips, her left, ripping her velvet dress.

In front of multiple witnesses Ball used two guns to shoot her police bodyguard, her chauffeur, a police constable and a journalist who rushed to help, until a passing boxer helped police to subdue him.

New details on Jeffrey Epsteins supposed suicide attempt inside a Manhattan jail were revealed Monday after a batch of confidential documents were obtained and reported by CBS News.

Epstein was arrested in July of 2019 on sex trafficking charges, but would never stand trial after being found dead in his cell on Aug. 10, 2019 in what was ultimately ruled a suicide. His death came just weeks after another apparent suicide attempt in the early morning hours of July 23 in an incident Epstein initially alleged was an attempt on his life by his cellmate.

Tartaglione has repeatedly denied that he tried to kill Epstein, but details in a corrections memo exclusively obtained suggest that Epstein feared Tartaglione well before the July 23 incident.

According to the memo, Epstein had feared Tartaglione long before making his concerns known to correctional officers, but had declined to voice them out of fear of retaliation, telling officers that his bunkie told him that if he beat him up because of Epsteins charges, the officers would not report it, according to the memo.

The memo also detailed Tartagliones account of what happened that night. Jeff, what are you doing,,Tartaglione asked Epstein in the early morning hours of July 23, according to a separate memo.

Tartaglione told correctional officers that he, sleeping on a mattress on the floor beside Epstein, who had taken the bottom mattress in a bunk bed, felt something hit his legs. After turning on the light, Tartaglione told officers he observed Epstein sitting slumped on the floor leaning to the side with his eyes opened and with fabric around his neck, though unresponsive.

Epstein would go on to be placed on suicide watch the following day, on July 24, but taken off suicide watch on July 29, just five days before his death. In the days leading up to his death

The expose uncovered how Fergie wrote to Epstein to apologise for disavowing him in a public statement following his conviction for child sexual abuse offences.

The founders of the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation announced they are severing ties with Sarah, who was previously one of their patrons while fellow charity Prevent Breast Cancer announced a similar move.

The Childrens Literacy Charity has also asked her to step down as patron, calling any continued role inappropriate after what it described as the recent information which came to light about Ferguson and Epstein.

And the Teenage Cancer Trust this afternoon revealed the Duchess was no longer a patron of the charity which she has long backed since it opened its first unit in 1990, and to whom she introduced her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, who remain as patrons.

Late on a Friday night, after a few hours of swirling rumours, Buckingham Palace confirmed the story that the former Duke of York would give up his title voluntarily, along with honours including his Order of the Garter.

To the public, it may not mean much. But to Andrew, the son of Queen Elizabeth II and brother of King Charles III, it will mean everything. He has been allowed a modicum of dignity, putting out his own statement framing it as a move to help the rest of the Royal family move on.

There has, of course, been more to it behind the scenes. The King, who has shown remarkable patience with his brothers capacity for painful headlines over the years, is said to be glad of the outcome.

His strong encouragement of this decision can be inferred, as can the influence of the Prince of Wales, who has always made clear his lack of tolerance for Andrews behaviour.

Now, the Royal family will hope to draw a line under what has become known as the Prince Andrew problem.

If there is further scandal yet to come out and Andrews track record suggests there may well be they can at least now point to decisive action and a Prince who will no longer be known as a Duke

Yet the HYPOCRITE King is allowed to marry his mistress and call her Queen AGAINST the Decree of his mother who said she is only a COUNSEL.....

It was one thing writing about the abuses of his childhood, Charles Spencer tells me, with half an ironic laugh; it’s quite another talking about them with strangers. When we meet in an office at his publisher, he is reeling a bit from this new fact of his life. The more sensational chapters of his memoir of a deeply traumatic five years at the Northamptonshire prep school Maidwell Hall had been splashed all over the previous week’s Mail on Sunday. The following morning, he had been a guest on Lorraine Kelly’s mid-morning TV sofa, raking over the painful detail of that long-buried past for the viewers. As a result, he says, apologising if he seems a bit strung out, he’s had two days of thumping headaches followed by vivid nightmares. The early responses to his book about being sent away from home to be brutalised at school at eight years old have been instructive. On the one hand he’s had a mailbox of emails from fellow survivors, praising his courage in speaking up for the generations of “privileged” schoolboys and girls who, like him, suffered serial beatings and sexual assault in the closed world of boarding schools well before puberty. On the other he’s experienced the default prurience of the tabloid press, which picked over his book for clickbait (ever since Spencer stood up in the pulpit at Westminster Abbey and blamed redtop journalists for hounding his sister, Diana, to death, he seems to have been considered fair game). The Sun, for example, thought the most appropriate headline for a book about the lasting harm of childhood trauma to be “Di Bro’s sex at 12 with hooker”. The food writer William Sitwell, a near contemporary of Spencer’s at Maidwell and Eton, meanwhile, blithely dismissed the substance of the memoir in two columns in the Telegraph. In the first, Sitwell branded Spencer a traitor to his class: “One of their own – an earl, uncle to princes, seriously landed, stately housed, replete with a deer park, fine furniture and fabulous paintings – is dishing the dirt from within…” he wrote. In the second, he argued, bizarrely, that “Spencer has not suggested that, beyond corporal punishment, he or anyone else was a victim of abuse”. His book was written precisely to challenge that stubborn, unhinged belief among his peers that school regimes featuring daily beatings and endemic paedophilia “never did me any harm”. (Reading Sitwell’s piece I was reminded of an observation by Alex Renton, the journalist who has done much in recent years to shed light on the history of abuse at many of Britain’s most exclusive private schools. Soon after Renton revealed the worst of what had happened to him as a child, he ran into an old school friend at a party: “Don’t stand near Alex,” the friend warned others present, “he’ll put his hand down your trousers.”) The affecting power of Spencer’s account lies in its description of the way predatory violence was entirely normalised in his school years. Maidwell Hall was presented to wealthy parents as a kind of term-time paradise for young boys; once the family had departed down the gravel drive, Spencer writes, it became a hellish place. The awful wound of homesickness was preyed upon by fearful teachers who bullied and thumped and caned vulnerable boys, or insisted on “special” naked swimming lessons; that was exacerbated by a senior matron obsessed with humiliating bedwetters, and a junior matron who molested 10-year-olds and had sex with 12-year-olds after lights out. “I realised very early on that this was a horribly ugly subject,” Spencer says. “And I made a conscious effort to make the book as smooth a read as possible. As a result every now and then the reader might tread on a landmine and think: what the hell was that?” The identities of his fellow pupils are protected in the book (the historian in him has given each of them the name of one of King Charles I’s regicides). He names the teachers he knows to have died, including Jack Porch, the headteacher who “retired early” at 51 for 'unspecified reasons'.

Now, the 428-year-old secret dossier of Robert Cecil, spymaster to Elizabeth I and the man who discovered the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, has been pieced together using this key document. It reveals how Cecil set up and used a clandestine espionage network to spy on European monarchs for the English throne. The network was so extensive that the historian Stephen Alford – who has been hunting down Elizabethan spies and painstakingly reconstructing Cecil’s illicit files about each “intelligencer” ever since he found the list in the archives nearly 15 years ago – thinks it was “the first properly organised secret service” in England. “There were lots of names listed – some I recognised, people in or close to the privy council of Elizabeth I, and lots I didn’t know. Eventually, I realised that the numbers next to their names were folio numbers and that this was really a contents page. That was a lightbulb moment,” said Alford, professor of early modern British history at the University of Leeds. Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, before 1606. By John de Critz the Elder (c.1552-1642). He has written a book on his discoveries, All His Spies: The Secret World of Robert Cecil, which is being published by Penguin. The previously overlooked document, which Alford thinks Cecil began to write in 1596, had been placed in a “miscellaneous” folder by Victorian archivists. “I think I was probably the first scholar to take an interest in it,” said Alford. “The Victorians had a habit, where if they came across papers that didn’t make sense to them, that were a little mysterious and couldn’t be filed away in a neat and tidy way, they would scratch their heads and then stick them in a miscellaneous folder and ignore them. And that’s where historians now find really interesting stuff.” He began scouring the archives for any paper which looked relevant and had “a little number in the corner” that matched the intelligencer’s number on the contents page. “I just had to hope that the edges of the paper hadn’t been torn. And because the manuscripts were so poorly kept before the 19th century – often stuffed into the chambers in the Tower of London – rats and mice got to some as well. Often, they were stained, sometimes you see teeth marks. It’s a miracle these papers survived at all.” As he gradually built up each intelligencer’s folio, he began to see a pattern. “Each was like an office file, I think. It was on hand in Cecil’s office for when reports came in, or to keep a record of payments made.” Most spies in the 16th century worked for courtiers and were normally “a bunch of rogues”, Alford said, who would turn up haphazardly and volunteer information on an ad hoc basis. The intelligencers on this list were different: “These were serious individuals, a lot of them international merchants, who were on the payroll.” Previously, scholars thought that Cecil, whose official role was secretary of state to Elizabeth, had a “few spies, here and there”. But Alford’s research indicates that he had an organised network of more than 20 spies, in Lisbon, Calais, Brussels, Seville, Rome, Amsterdam, Scotland, Sweden and unspecified locations elsewhere. “He chose merchants because they travel, can read and write, speak European languages and have networks of their own.” Each agent was paid to secretly send coded reports to Cecil, who decrypted them using the individual, bespoke cypher in each of their files, which also contained a record of their payments and all their secret communications. “By modern standards, the cyphers are pretty unsophisticated – they’ll suggest different letters for letters of the alphabets, or symbols or diagrams for the Queen or King of Spain, for example,” he said. After the Spanish Armada of 1588, when the Catholic Philip II of Spain had tried to invade Protestant England and overthrow Elizabeth, Cecil was particularly worried about the possibility of a second Spanish naval attack in the 1590s. “There’s one crew of spies – two brothers – keeping an eye on the Atlantic coast, somewhere near Biarritz, to see if there are any Spanish ships sailing in a new armada or making military and naval preparations. It's not cheap to look round, costing £75, but has already completely sold out for this year. In this more intimate version of the tour, none of the items on show are roped off from visitors. The furniture doesn't have 'keep off' signs. It makes it feel more like a living building rather than a museum, but there's no escaping the gradual gift-shopification of the palace. It's a mix of an historic setting for grand events, an office block and a tourist attraction, but at the moment it still seems a way off from being where any of the royals are likely to live. Visiting royals don't stay here either any more. During their recent state visit the Emperor and Empress of Japan stayed in Claridge's Hotel. Yellow drawing room, Buckingham Palace There is an ongoing £369m project to renovate the palace complex, not just the gilded surfaces, but the basics of the plumbing and wiring on what is a huge set of ageing buildings. Once you step away from the glitzy state rooms you never seem far from scaffolding and repair works. Renovating the east wing alone meant removing and conserving 3,500 separate items, including historic furniture and works of art. And the tour only includes only a relatively small part of that wing. But the sell-out tours show the public demand and while there will be art lovers among the visitors, people will also be coming to see for themselves something they might have watched on television or imagined through the Crown. They can stand in the elegant Yellow Drawing room, used for many audiences and the setting of a Christmas broadcast by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

BBC 11 JUL 2024 She was able to give her own story to Prince William as proof that homeless people should not be "written off". *"I sit in front of you now with a job, a home, a family and a PhD," says Sabrina, who works as a fire service chief.* Prince William will mark the first year of his Homewards project with a visit to Lambeth in south London where he will say: "It is possible to end homelessness." Prince William will send the message that homelessness can be prevented The prince will send the message that there is nothing inevitable about homelessness and that it shouldn't be normalised. When he meets Homewards representatives on Thursday he will say: “Homelessness is a complex societal issue, and one that touches the lives of far too many people in our society. However, I truly believe that it can be ended." Homewards is a five-year project based around six areas around the UK. That includes Newport in South Wales - and as a 15- and 16-year-old that was where Sabrina was sleeping rough, after the death of a parent and problems at home. Her way out was selling the Big Issue - "I credit them with saving my life" - and once she had secure accommodation she was able to get a job in the fire service, which became her career. But she was able to tell Prince William and the Homewards project about what was needed. "There were lots of closed doors in my face," she says. Even when support was meant to be available, she says in practice it can be hard for homeless people to have the confidence to access it. Or there can be practical barriers. She says she relied on her dog, called Menace, but many hostels wouldn't let people stay with pets. She went on to become chief fire officer of West Sussex and has spoken widely about her own journey, including this latest role as an advocate for Homewards. Sabrina says Prince William showed a lot of "empathy" towards the issue of homelessness The homelessness project, operating in Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Lambeth, Newport, Sheffield and Northern Ireland, wants to find successful approaches that can be replicated elsewhere. There are links with employers about helping people into work. A partnership with Homebase provides starter packs of furniture to help those moving from homelessness into accommodation. Putting housing officers in schools has been tried to identify young people who might be at risk.
