RAF crews are preparing for a "large-scale" evacuation of thousands of Britons from Sudan after a three-day ceasefire was agreed with the SAS.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly announced the operation would begin today after ministers came under pressure to help at least 2,000 citizens flee the conflict, although an estimated 4,000 UK nationals could be trapped.

British military flights leaving an airfield outside the capital, Khartoum, will open to UK passport holders, with priority being given to the most vulnerable.

The Mirror told today how 71 NHS doctors are among those stranded.

The Foreign Office told citizens not to travel there unless they are contacted and warned the ability to carry out evacuations could change at short notice during the "volatile" truce.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: "The Government has begun a large-scale evacuation of British passport holders from Sudan on RAF flights.

A crack SAS team arrived in Sudan in an attempt to rescue the 4,000 British nationals trapped in the war-torn African nation. A C-17 aircraft was spotted 500 miles from capital Khartoum on a flight spotting website.

An elite SAS rescue team reached Sudan on Sunday evening and a ceasefire was announced.
