Red Arrow Brit Left by British Embassy in Sudan Shot Before Wife Starved to DEATH

Sudan BLOODY Fighting: Street Battles Dash Hopes of Eid Ceasefire

Sudan Crisis: Rishi Sunak Holds Emergency COBRA Meeting on Evacuation. UK Army Says Foreign Nationals to be Evacuated.

Saudi Helps Evacuate as Streets Fill With Stench of Blood

Sudan’s army chief says he will facilitate the evacuation of diplomats from the UK, US, France, and China – as fighting continues in the capital, Khartoum.

Special Forces Airlift US Diplomats From Sudan

BBC News 23 APR 2023

Saudi Arabia welcomed evacuees at Jeddah Sea Port with sweets and roses on Saturday

The country’s international airport has been shut down amid a power struggle between the Sudanese government and paramilitary group ‘Rapid Support Forces’.

Diplomats and nationals from the UK, US, France and China are to be evacuated from Sudan by air as fighting there continues, a statement from the Sudanese army says.

Army chief Fattah al-Burhan agreed to facilitate and secure their evacuation "in the coming hours", it said.

He is locked in a bitter power struggle with the leader of a rival paramilitary faction, the Rapid Support Forces.

Saudi Arabia confirmed it had evacuated over 150 people from Sudan on Saturday.

Among those evacuated to Jeddah were diplomats and international officials, the Saudi Arabian foreign ministry said.

It said it had safely transported 91 Saudi Arabian citizens, as well as 66 others from various other countries including Qatar, Pakistan, the UAE and Canada. They were evacuated by sea, state TV channel Al-Ekhbariyah reported. It is unclear where in Sudan they were evacuated from.

Meanwhile, the UK government said it was preparing for "a number of contingencies".

But fierce fighting in the city centre on Saturday made it unclear how evacuations from Khartoum's airport could take place.

People in Khartoum who have been speaking to the BBC described intense fighting in the city centre on Saturday.

A statement from the Sudanese army said British, US, French and Chinese nationals and diplomats would be evacuated by air on board military transport planes from the capital, Khartoum.

The UK government said it was "doing everything possible to support British nationals and diplomatic staff in Khartoum".

It said its defence ministry was working with the foreign office to prepare for a number of provisions, without specifying whether immediate evacuations were among those plans.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak chaired a Cobra meeting - an emergency response committee - on Saturday morning about the situation in Sudan.

A British citizen in Khartoum told the BBC she felt "completely abandoned" by the British government, adding that she had not been given "much information at all" about possible plans to be evacuated.

"It remains very depressing, worrying and confusing to be a Brit on the ground here," she said. "We're still very much in the dark".

"We don't have a plan, we don't even have a kind of plan for a plan. We understand that this is a fast-evolving situation but to be honest we've just in many senses been completely abandoned here."

Spain's defence minister said six planes were being sent to Djibouti as part of the country's efforts to evacuate Spanish nationals and others.

Khartoum's international airport has been closed due to the violence, with foreign embassies unable to bring their citizens home.

The conflict has entered its second week despite both sides - the army and the RSF - agreeing to a three-day ceasefire to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, starting from Friday. But fighting continued on Saturday.

A former foreign minister, Mariam al-Mahdi, who is sheltering in Khartoum told the BBC the ceasefire was "not taking at all".

"We are out of electricity for the last 24 hours. We are out of water for the last six days," she said.

Medical teams are being targeted in the fighting, she said, adding: "There are rotting bodies of our youth in the streets."

People gather at the station to flee from Khartoum during clashes between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the army in Khartoum, Sudan April 19, 2023.

Thousands of people have been trying to flee Sudan since the violent clashes began

Fierce street battles erupted in Khartoum on 15 April after disagreements emerged between the leaders of both sides - General Burhan and the RSF's Mohamed Hamdan "Hemedti" Dagalo - over how Sudan should be run.

They both held top positions in Sudan's current military government, formed after the 2019 coup that ousted long-time leader Omar al-Bashir.

They were supposed to merge their forces but the RSF resisted this change, mobilising its troops which escalated into full-scale fighting last week.

The World Health Organization says more than 400 people have been killed. The death toll is believed to be much higher as people struggle to reach hospitals.

Thousands of people, mainly civilians, have also been injured, with medical centres under pressure to deal with the influx of patients.

Along with Khartoum, the western region of Darfur, where the RSF first emerged, has also been badly affected by the fighting.

The UN has warned that up to 20,000 people - mostly women and children - have fled Sudan to seek safety in Chad, across the border from Darfur.

Elite SAS Rescue Team in Sudan as Ceasefire Announced

RAF Planes Swoop in to Rescue UK Nationals From Sudan After Daring SAS Mission

The plan comes after a crunch meeting of the Government's Cobra emergencies committee last night, with two warships ons standby in the region and military planes stationed at an airfield outside the capital, Khartoum

BBC News 25 APR 2023

An A400(M) Atlas

RAF crews are preparing for a "large-scale" evacuation of thousands of Britons from Sudan after a three-day ceasefire was agreed with the SAS.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly announced the operation would begin today after ministers came under pressure to help at least 2,000 citizens flee the conflict, although an estimated 4,000 UK nationals could be trapped.

British military flights leaving an airfield outside the capital, Khartoum, will open to UK passport holders, with priority being given to the most vulnerable.

The Mirror told today how 71 NHS doctors are among those stranded.

The Foreign Office told citizens not to travel there unless they are contacted and warned the ability to carry out evacuations could change at short notice during the "volatile" truce.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: "The Government has begun a large-scale evacuation of British passport holders from Sudan on RAF flights.

A crack SAS team arrived in Sudan in an attempt to rescue the 4,000 British nationals trapped in the war-torn African nation. A C-17 aircraft was spotted 500 miles from capital Khartoum on a flight spotting website.

An elite SAS rescue team reached Sudan on Sunday evening and a ceasefire was announced.

UK Armed Forces to Take Over Sudan Airfield as Evacuation Flights Gather Pace

Around 260 British citizens are expected to be flown out of Sudan overnight on three separate flights from the Wadi Saeedna airfield, with UK forces set to assume control of the facility from Germany on Wednesday.

BBC News 26 APR 2023

The first evacuation flights carrying British nationals have taken off from Sudan as UK troops prepare to take over the running of the airfield.

Two Royal Air Force planes have landed at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus as of 6.30am on Wednesday, with the first charter flight back to London set to depart later in the day.

Families with young children were among those on the first flights that landed in Cyprus with a British man telling the BBC that his sister, who left Sudan overnight, felt an overwhelming sense of relief.

Three planes were due to have left conflict-torn Khartoum for Cyprus by Wednesday morning, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledging “many more” would follow as he warned of a “critical” 24 hours.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the UK would take charge of the Wadi Saeedna airstrip near the capital from German forces, after Berlin said its final evacuation flight would leave on Tuesday night.

He said 120 British troops have already been supporting the operation there.

Around 260 people were expected to be flown out overnight on three flights, the first landing on Tuesday evening with around 40 people on board.

British nationals have been told to make their own way to the site with some fearing they will not make it due to a petrol shortage.

The UK military could be ready to use force if needed to protect the air base in the event it comes under attack during the airlift, although the troops are primarily there to help with logistics, the i paper reported.

Mr Wallace told LBC Radio: “The Germans are leaving tomorrow, and we will take over the facilitation at the airfield.

“And the reason the Germans are leaving is people have stopped coming in large numbers.”

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace

He said only one nation can facilitate the airfield at a time, adding: “If the Spanish or the Italians or anyone else wants to fly, we’ll be the ones giving permissions effectively.”

There is “some risk that some of the planes are not full,” he said, as there are “not thousands at the gate” as in the evacuation from Afghanistan.

The Government is considering other options, including a possible seaborne evacuation from Port Sudan, some 500 miles from the capital.

HMS Lancaster and the RFA Cardigan Bay have been sent to the region.

Announcing the completion of Germany’s evacuation efforts, the country’s foreign minister Annalena Baerbock said Berlin would not leave civilians “to their own devices”, in an apparent swipe at the UK’s approach.

She said that “unlike in other countries”, Germany’s evacuation had included all its nationals and not just embassy staff.

Mr Sunak defended the UK’s efforts, saying it was “right” that diplomats were prioritised “because they were being targeted”.

“The security situation on the ground in Sudan is complicated, it is volatile and we wanted to make sure we could put in place processes that are going to work for people, that are going to be safe and effective,” the Prime Minister said at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) crisis centre.

He told teams working on the evacuation efforts that “the next 24 hours are absolutely critical”.

The mission was launched during a ceasefire brokered between the warring factions. But Foreign Secretary James Cleverly warned the extraction of UK nationals is “inherently dangerous” as “we cannot be sure for how long it will hold”.

A UK-born student attempting to flee Sudan said she does not have enough petrol to make the dangerous one-hour drive from the outskirts of Khartoum to the airstrip.

“I’m trying to get there. But the problem is the vehicles that we have have no gas, and the petrol stations are empty,” Samar Eltayeb, 20, from Birmingham, told the PA news agency.

“There’ll be constant flights within the next few days, but if I can’t find gas to get there, then I’m stuck.”

More than 2,000 British citizens have registered in Sudan with the FCDO.

Families with children or elderly relatives, or individuals with medical conditions, will be prioritised for the flights.

Only British passport holders and immediate family members with existing UK entry clearance are being told they are eligible.

Nationals have been warned all travel within Sudan is “conducted at your own risk”.

Sudan Crisis Risks Becoming a Nightmare For The world - former PM Hamdok

The former prime minister of Sudan has warned that the conflict in his country could become worse than those in Syria and Libya.

UN Envoy to Region Warns Humanitarian Situation is Reaching Breaking Point

BBC News 1 MAY 2023

Abdalla Hamdok said the fighting will be a "nightmare for the world" if it continues.

The Sudanese army says it is attacking the capital Khartoum from all directions, using heavy artillery.

Almost two weeks of fighting has left hundreds dead, while tens of thousands of people are fleeing the country.

Thursday night's extension of an uneasy ceasefire between the rival factions followed intensive diplomatic efforts by neighbouring countries, as well as the US, UK and UN.

But the 72-hour extension has not held. Air, tank and artillery strikes are reported to be continuing in parts of Khartoum.

Speaking at a conference in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, Mr Hamdok called for a unified international effort to persuade the Sudanese military leader and the head of a rival paramilitary force to hold peace talks.

"This is a huge country, very diverse ... I think it will be a nightmare for the world," he said.

"This is not a war between an army and small rebellion. It is almost like two armies - well trained and well armed."

Mr Hamdok - who served as prime minister twice between 2019 and 2022 - added that the insecurity could become worse than the civil wars in Syria and Libya. Those wars have led to hundreds of thousands of deaths, created millions of refugees and caused instability in the wider regions.

Air Strikes Hit Khartoum Despite Truce

Air strikes have pounded Sudan's capital, Khartoum, despite a truce aimed at allowing civilians to flee.

The army said it was attacking the city to flush out its paramilitary rivals, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The fighting intensified even as the warring sides said they would extend the truce by another three days.

More than 500 deaths have been reported with the true number of casualties believed to be much higher.
Millions remain trapped in Khartoum.

Army commander Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF chief Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti, are vying for power - and disagree in particular about plans to include the RSF into the army.

The generals agreed a humanitarian truce after intensive diplomatic efforts by neighbouring countries, the US, UK and UN. It was extended, but did not hold.

However, it remains unclear on what they will do in the next stage of the deal arrived at with US and Saudi mediation, according to the army.

Saudi Arabia Evacuated MORE People Than any Other COUNTRY

Evacuees rest aboard a Saudi naval vessel as it travels from Port Sudan to Jeddah

Around 3,000 people have arrived in the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah

Meanwhile there are chaotic scenes in Port Sudan where people are desperate to board ships, some of which are heading to Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The UK government said it was winding up its own evacuation efforts on Saturday evening. It has established a diplomatic presence in Port Sudan, with an office at the coastal city's Coral Hotel.

Around 2,000 people have arrived in the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah after being evacuated from Port Sudan. Most are expected to be flown home via charter flights arranged by their governments within the next few days.

Speaking to BBC's Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet in Jeddah, Nazli, a 32 year-old Iranian civil engineer who fled with her fellow engineer husband, recalled the fighting they fled.

"We couldn't even sit on our balcony; the gunfire was everywhere," she said.

British Citizen Left in Sudan Shot by Sniper Before Wife Starved to DEATH

An 85-year-old British citizen in Sudan was shot by snipers and his wife then died of starvation after they were left to fend for themselves by the British embassy in Sudan, their family has told BBC News Arabic.

BBC 26 MAY 2023

Azhaar Sholgami (C) and her family had been trying to get British officials to help her grandparents leave Khartoum

Abdalla Sholgami lived with his 80-year-old disabled wife, Alaweya Rishwan, just over the road from the UK's diplomatic mission in Khartoum.

But despite repeated calls for help, the London hotel owner was never offered support to leave Sudan, even when a British military team was sent to evacuate diplomatic staff. Instead, the elderly couple were told to go to an airfield 40km (25 miles) outside Khartoum - which would have meant crossing a warzone - to board an evacuation flight.

The UK foreign office acknowledged to the BBC that the Sholgamis' case was "extremely sad" but added that "our ability to provide consular assistance is severely limited and we cannot provide in-person support within Sudan".

Khartoum's diplomatic area has seen intense fighting since the conflict broke out on 15 April.

The violence was triggered by a power struggle between former allies - the leaders of the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Just a few days into the conflict the family began contacting the UK embassy.

The embassy was evacuated with the support of Britain's Army and Royal Air Force just over a week after the fighting began.

The UK embassy is a "maximum four steps away", explained Mr Sholgami's granddaughter, Azhaar, who grew up in Khartoum.

"I was informed they had 100 troops who came and evacuated their staff. They could not cross the road? I'm still very disappointed in them."

Faced with starvation and with no water, Mr Sholgami was forced to leave his wife to find help. While he was out, he was shot three times - in his hand, chest and lower back - by snipers. With no hospitals working where he was, Mr Sholgami was then taken to a family member in another part of Khartoum and survived.

But his wife was now left to fend for herself and it was impossible for any family to reach her in an area that was surrounded by snipers.

The family continued to contact the UK foreign office's hotline to help Alaweya Rishwan, but she was stuck in the house without any help and was found dead by an official from the Turkish embassy a few days later. Her body remains in the house, unburied.

--- 'My grandma died alone in Sudan, now I can't bury her'

The family says the UK government has done nothing to support them and have not been in touch since 3 May, which was when the last evacuation flight to the UK took off.

Azhaar Sholgami is distraught.

"What happened to my grandparents was a crime against humanity, not only by the RSF, not only by the [Sudanese army], but by the British embassy, because they were the only ones that could have prevented this from happening to my grandparents," she told the BBC.

Grand-daughter and grandmother

The UK Foreign Office told the BBC: "The ongoing military conflict means Sudan remains dangerous… the UK is taking a leading role in the diplomatic efforts to secure peace in Sudan."

Mr Sholgami has now managed to escape to Egypt, where he is getting medical treatment after his wounds were operated on in Khartoum by his son, a doctor, without anaesthetic.

That is because only a handful of Khartoum's 88 hospitals remain open after weeks of fighting, according to Sudan's Doctors Union.

Hospitals have often been targeted by both sides during the conflict.

A BBC News Arabic investigation has uncovered disturbing evidence of possible war crimes being carried out on medical facilities and staff by both sides.

The BBC team used satellite data and mapping tools, analysed user-generated content on a huge scale, and spoke to dozens of doctors, to build a picture of exactly who may be committing war crimes.

Ibn Sina hospital is one of a number the BBC has identified as having been targeted in an airstrike or by artillery fire when medics were treating civilian patients.

Dr Alaa is a surgeon at the hospital and was present when the attack happened on 19 April.

"There wasn't any warning. Ibn Sina hospital where I worked was hit by three bombs, while a fourth bomb hit the nurses' house which was entirely set on fire," he said.

"The duty to warn of any impending airstrike to ensure, to take due precaution, that all civilians are able to evacuate a hospital prior to an airstrike - that is very clear under the laws of war," according to Christian de Vos, an international criminal law expert with NGO Physicians for Human Rights.

Looking at the images of the attack, forensic weapons expert Chris Cobb-Smith said it could have been caused by artillery fire.

Uncertainty over the kind of weapon used means it is hard to be sure which side was responsible, or if this was a targeted attack.

Another medical facility targeted was the East Nile hospital - one of the last operating in that part of the capital.

The BBC has seen evidence of RSF fighters surrounding it with their vehicles and anti-aircraft weapons.

There have been reports of patients being forcibly evacuated from the building. But we have also spoken to witnesses who say civilians continued to be treated alongside the RSF soldiers.

On 1 May a public area next to the East Nile hospital was hit by a Sudanese army airstrike. There was no warning, according to sources the BBC has spoken to.

Five civilians died in that attack.

There was a further airstrike two weeks later but there has been no independent confirmation of the number of injured.

The World Health Organization has reported that nine hospitals have been taken over by fighters from one side or the other.

"The preferential treatment of soldiers over civilians [is] not an appropriate use of a medical facility and it may well constitute a violation of the laws of war," Mr De Vos said.

A political advisor to the RSF, Mostafa Mohamed Ibrahim, denied that they were preventing the treatment of civilians. He told the BBC: "Our forces are just spreading, and they are present… they are not occupying and don't stop civilians from being treated in these hospitals."

The Sudanese army did not provide a response to this investigation's findings.
