Michael Gerard "Mike" Tyson (also known as Malik Abdul Aziz) (born June 30, 1966) is a retired American boxer. Tyson is a former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and holds the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles, he was 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old. Tyson won his first 19 professional bouts by knockout, with twelve of them occurring in the first round. He won the WBC title in 1986 after defeating Trevor Berbick by a TKO in the second round. In 1987, Tyson added the WBA and IBF titles after defeating James Smith and Tony Tucker. He was the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold and only Heavyweight to individually unify the WBA, WBC and IBF titles.

In 1988, Tyson became the lineal champion when he knocked out Michael Spinks in the first 91 seconds of the fight. Tyson successfully defended the world heavyweight championship nine times, including victories over Larry Holmes and Frank Bruno. Tyson lost his titles to 42-to-1 underdog James "Buster" Douglas on February 11, 1990, in Tokyo, Japan, by a knockout in round 10. Tyson continued in his quest to regain the titles, defeating Donovan Ruddock twice in 1991. Tyson was then scheduled to take on the undisputed heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield but pulled out due to injury.

In 1992, Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington, for which he was sentenced to six years in prison, but was released after serving three years. After being released from prison in 1995, he engaged in a series of comeback fights. In 1996, Tyson won the WBC and WBA titles after defeating Frank Bruno and Bruce Seldon by knockout. After being stripped of the WBC title, Tyson lost his WBA crown to Evander Holyfield in November, 1996 by an 11th round TKO. Their 1997 rematch ended when Tyson was disqualified for biting off part of Holyfield's ear.

In 2002, he fought for the world heavyweight title at the age of 35, losing by knockout to Lennox Lewis. Tyson retired from professional boxing in 2006 after he was knocked out in consecutive matches against Danny Williams and Kevin McBride. Tyson declared bankruptcy in 2003, despite receiving over US$30 million for several of his fights and $300 million during his career.

Throughout his career, Tyson became well known for his ferocious and intimidating boxing style as well as his controversial behavior both inside and outside the ring. Tyson is considered to have been one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time. He is ranked No. 16 on The Ring's list of 100 greatest punchers of all time.

Forget pitying the boxers I've lined up to show you getting spanked by Iron Mike.
What did they really lose? How did they really suffer? What did they really have to go through adding to this man's highlight reel?
Nothing.

They got off easy compared to the degree of cruelty and frustration I endured at the hands of Tyson for an entire year's worth of school lunch hours in second-grade playing Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

Our entire school was like a lit powder keg the day 007 373 5963 had been proven as the password to cheat your way into a DREAM FIGHT against Kid Dynamite.
Fortunately, during an interview with Mike Tyson last year, I avoided this topic of discussion.

He's been through a lot over the years. It hardly seems necessary to rub anything in against him (like, I don't know, being able to knock him out in the first round since I was the age of 8).
But don't kid yourself, implicitly he knew––as now you know––given an NES and a joystick, that game-for-anything midget Little Mac as my avatar, and the philosophical, shoulder-patting master Doc Louis returning to my corner, I'd cream him.

As you might have noticed, compiling a list of Tyson's greatest punches brings me back to the excitement Tyson was able to generate at that time.
It goes something like this: Mike Tyson was the most expensive drug that entertainment had ever unleashed on the public. After seeing any of his knockouts, we were all hooked.
The broadcasters calling his fights and stepping in the ring to interview him looked as if they were mainlining what the rest of us were only getting wasted off of by the fumes.

Early on Tyson was marketed by his managers with a poster that said something to the effect of this:

Your grandfather missed Marciano.
Your dad missed Ali.
Don't miss Mike Tyson.

10. Buster Mathis Jr.

Mike Tyson was back after his stint in an Indiana prison. He'd just made a killing with the farce of Peter McNeeley and, for his next fight, FOX gave Tyson vs. Buster Mathis Jr. to television viewers for free.
A rusty Tyson had trouble locating Mathis in the early rounds with his punches, in the third round (2:17 mark of this clip) that all changed with a magnificent pivot followed by a crushing right uppercut.
This was a strange time to follow Tyson. Despite evidence to the contrary, he made persistent claims he was actually a better fighter than he'd ever been. He was so adamant on the point that he was able to convince a lot of people that there was some remote possibility it might be true. What nobody questioned was that his intimidation aura had returned with a vengeance.
The truth was he still had magnificent hand speed coupled with tremendous power, but the time away and all the negative influences in his life had taken their toll. The Tyson we saw against Mike Spinks never improved past that point. He fired his trainer and he never regained the dedication he'd once had.
But of course there were glimpses of that greatness that might have been the rule rather than the exception.
A slick little move like the number he uncorked on Mathis Jr. was one of these reminders.

9. Jose Ribalta

The lead-up to the shot I'm directing you to in this clip ( :31 second mark) has some of the most vicious body work ever seen by a heavyweight. The speed, ferocity and power separate Tyson's attention to body punching from just about anyone else.
It's a testament to the ruggedness of Cuban heavyweight Jose Ribalta that after taking the body shot followed by a blinding detonation of an uppercut, he jumps up.
Tyson was tuned for this fight to show some special. His conditioning is extraordinary. Nearly every punch he's throwing seems calibrated to decapitate Ribalta.
Find any heavyweight out there that could throw and try and imagine compiling a highlight reel that would intimidate more 30-odd seconds of Tyson vs. Ribalta in this clip.

8. Tony Tubbs

The punch I've singled out here is at 34:31 mark of the clip, classic Tyson left hook. Tubbs delayed reaction and Tyson swarming him after is just gravy.
This is prime Tyson in top form fighting the goofy presence that was Tony Tubbs.
Tubbs is oddly satisfying to watch in this contest as everything he's capable of as a fighter contradicts what you'd expect he'd be capable of, given his slovenly appearance.
Somehow it adds considerably to the fun.
Also there's something about the atmosphere to Tyson vs. Tubbs that has something special. One, it's impossible to watch Tyson fighting in Japan without thinking about what came around with Buster in February of 1990. Two, watching this Tyson who seems so sharp blowout Tony Tubbs (who was considered a vastly bigger challenge than Buster Douglas ever was), makes you wonder about a tip-top Tyson stepping in against Buster and if things could've gone a different route.

7. Carl Williams

At 8:48 of the clip, Tyson slips a Williams' punch and counters with a left hook he'd been trying for the entire fight. Williams goes flying and the ref calls the fight. The fight lasts a couple seconds longer than Tyson Spinks.
It's an interesting fight because Kevin Rooney, Tyson's trainer for his entire career leading up to Spinks, is gone and a new team is in place. Don King has a firm hold of Tyson's career. Accordingly, Tyson's sophistication as a fighter has degenerated and been replaced with a new aura of menace.
This is a Tyson less concerned with defense or punching in combination and firmly intent on landing the hardest shot possible as quickly possible. But, at that time, nobody saw Buster Douglas coming.
As you can hear from the electricity of the audience immediately after the knockout, everybody was drinking the Kool-Aid that Tyson was invincible.
Still, it's a riveting shot and conclusion to the fight.

6. Michael Johnson

Michael "Jack" (I'm not kidding or making that up) Johnson sustained Tyson's best ever finish. It's also the greatest punch Tyson ever landed guaranteed to crack up anyone you know that you show it to.
My honed journalistic instincts point to Johnson's ridiculously unfortunate hairdo deserving most of the credit for this. There's just something about the way his hair responds after Tyson delivers a sledge hammer-like right hand to Johnson's cheek that should come with a government warning you'll blow whatever you happen to be drinking out of your nose after viewing it.
This was Tyson at 19 shaping perhaps the greatest expectations ever placed on a heavyweight in the history of the sport. He was already a Sports Illustrated cover boy and was well on his way to the title, offering up warning to whoever stood in his path.

5. Henry Tillman

Here we find Tyson after his loss to Buster Douglas facing another opponent he'd lost to, albeit in the amateurs. It added something to the flavor of the contest, despite how misleading it was given the difference between professional boxing from the amateurs.
Henry Tillman had kept Tyson away from the 1984 Olympics.
Tyson sought and succeeded at avenging the defeat Tillman had handed him. Tillman looks as if he's perpetually urinating himself from the moment he enters the ring.
As with the previous Tyson knockout shot against Michael (I'm sure you might have mistaken me for) "Jack" Johnson, Tyson finishes off Tillman in the first round with a cartoonishly-absurd overhand right that's swung in the fashion of a hammer at a strong man competition at a county fair where you attempt to ding a bell.
Note Jim Lampley, as Tillman is being counted out, remark dryly, "That'll be enough." Classic.

4. Jesse Ferguson

Tyson caught a lot of flack for the shot he was attempting and finally did land at the 4:25 mark of this clip. The infamous "jam-the-nose-into-the-brain" punch.
Without Tyson's frightening (he was giggling as he made the statement) editorializing of the how and why he delivered this blow, it illustrated Tyson's tenacity and remarkable skills as a puncher as deftly as any combination he landed. Joe Louis could land the combination as quickly, but not land it with anywhere near the emphasis Tyson achieves.
Already, at such an early stage of his career, he was being touted as someone who hit as hard as George Foreman but had exceedingly faster hands. A combination like the one he landed to floor Jesse Ferguson underlined that point more than anything else could.

3. Trevor Berbick

At the 6:46 mark of the clip, Tyson demonstrates the lasting delayed-response effects of his punching power as he emerges from his battle against Trevor Berbick as the youngest heavyweight champion in the history of the sport at age 20.
The electricity emanating from the crowd is incredible and builds right up until the moment Tyson satisfies all expectations and removes all doubt about his place in boxing history.
This fight also capped off the promise Tyson had shown to his mentor Cus D'Amato, who remarked after first seeing Tyson spar for three rounds, that he'd just watched the youngest heavyweight champion in the world.
It all came true on this night and Tyson dedicated the moment to Cus.
Looking back on it a quarter of a century later, it's impossible not to wonder what might have been.

2: Michael Spinks

We all remember this fight for the obvious reasons: the obscenity of Tyson cashing in $21 million for 90 seconds work.
Investigate what anyone else was getting paid for their work in 1988––movie stars, athletes in any sport, Michael Jackson––Tyson was the most expensive drug on the market for us. And he was 21.
Conceivably we had another 9 years of him in his prime to look forward to while he, at this time, was marketed by some of the most conservative companies in the world (Toyota, Pepsi, Kodak, Nintendo), was going to beat Tiger Woods to becoming sports first billionaire.
Had Tyson stayed focused inside and outside of the ring, he was on his way to being a billionaire before he'd reach 30.
Tyson's fight against Spinks puts in perspective just how big he, and this fight, was at the time. Spinks had never been knocked down before. He was undefeated and come away with two victories against Larry Holmes, the first man ever to arguably defeat the great champion.
You weren't thought of as crazy if you picked Spinks to somehow frustrate Tyson and leave Atlantic City with a victory.
But then Tyson entered the arena. For my money it's one was the finest displays of gladiatorial menace ever seen leading up to a fight. Even the music is extraordinary with clanging chains and this malignant chord of menace reverberating.
The Tyson entering the ring against Spinks would never return. No other fighter besides Michael Spinks fought this Mike Tyson. And when we think about his place in boxing history, we should consider this Tyson against the other heavyweights, at their best, that we compare him to.

1: Marvis Frazier

While I think the Tyson facing Spinks was a great deal more seasoned than this 20-year-old version of Tyson, I don't Tyson ever gave a performance as electrifying as the one he did against poor Joe Frazier's son, Marvis.

If you wanted to show someone a fight of Tyson's to demonstrate his magnificence as the greatest nightmare ever inflicted on the sport, I challenge you to find a display as convincing as this spectacle.
The ferociousness, efficiency, speed and brain-shattering power are all demonstrated in this contest within the 30 seconds it took Tyson to stalk and demolish Marvis against the corner. Frazier is left slumping over, helpless to defend himself, as the crowd cheers as much in shock as approval.

Henry Tillman Here we find Tyson after his loss to Buster Douglas facing another opponent he'd lost to, albeit in the amateurs. It added something to the flavor of the contest, despite how misleading it was given the difference between professional boxing from the amateurs. Henry Tillman had kept Tyson away from the 1984 Olympics. Tyson sought and succeeded at avenging the defeat Tillman had handed him. Tillman looks as if he's perpetually urinating himself from the moment he enters the ring. As with the previous Tyson knockout shot against Michael (I'm sure you might have mistaken me for) "Jack" Johnson, Tyson finishes off Tillman in the first round with a cartoonishly-absurd overhand right that's swung in the fashion of a hammer at a strong man competition at a county fair where you attempt to ding a bell. Note Jim Lampley, as Tillman is being counted out, remark dryly, "That'll be enough." Jesse Ferguson Tyson caught a lot of flack for the shot he was attempting and finally did land at the 4:25 mark of this clip. The infamous "jam-the-nose-into-the-brain" punch. Without Tyson's frightening (he was giggling as he made the statement) editorializing of the how and why he delivered this blow, it illustrated Tyson's tenacity and remarkable skills as a puncher as deftly as any combination he landed. Joe Louis could land the combination as quickly, but not land it with anywhere near the emphasis Tyson achieves. Already, at such an early stage of his career, he was being touted as someone who hit as hard as George Foreman but had exceedingly faster hands. Investigate what anyone else was getting paid for their work in 1988––movie stars, athletes in any sport, Michael Jackson––Tyson was the most expensive drug on the market for us. And he was 21. Conceivably we had another 9 years of him in his prime to look forward to while he, at this time, was marketed by some of the most conservative companies in the world (Toyota, Pepsi, Kodak, Nintendo), was going to beat Tiger Woods to becoming sports first billionaire. Had Tyson stayed focused inside and outside of the ring, he was on his way to being a billionaire before he'd reach 30. Tyson's fight against Spinks puts in perspective just how big he, and this fight, was at the time. Spinks had never been knocked down before. He was undefeated and come away with two victories against Larry Holmes, the first man ever to arguably defeat the great champion. You weren't thought of as crazy if you picked Spinks to somehow frustrate Tyson and leave Atlantic City with a victory. But then Tyson entered the arena. For my money it's one was the finest displays of gladiatorial menace ever seen leading up to a fight. Even the music is extraordinary with clanging chains and this malignant chord of menace reverberating. The Tyson entering the ring against Spinks would never return. No other fighter besides Michael Spinks fought this Mike Tyson. If you wanted to show someone a fight of Tyson's to demonstrate his magnificence as the greatest nightmare ever inflicted on the sport, I challenge you to find a display as convincing as this spectacle. The ferociousness, efficiency, speed and brain-shattering power are all demonstrated in this contest within the 30 seconds it took Tyson to stalk and demolish Marvis against the corner.
