War Machine Facing Life in Prison for Assaulting Ex-Girlfriend Christy Mack

Jon Koppenhaver, also known as War Machine, made his initial court appearance for more than 30 charges, including an attempted murder charge stemming from the alleged attack of his ex-girlfriend, adult film star Christy Mack, and her friend Corey Thomas.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the laundry list of crimes includes "attempted murder, sexual assault, battery, coercion, preventing or dissuading a witness or victim from reporting a crime, and first-degree kidnapping resulting in substantial bodily harm."

If found guilty, Koppenhaver could be facing life in prison without parole.

The assault on Mack is one of the most heinous out-of-the-cage incidents in the history of MMA.

According to a police report, Koppenhaver entered Mack's home on August 8 and found her asleep in bed with Thomas.
Koppenhaver attacked Thomas, beating him and sending him out of the house.

According to Mack, Koppenhaver proceeded to punch, kick and choke her before cutting her hair off with a dull knife. The police report states that he left the room for the kitchen to get a sharper knife in order to "finish the job," which allowed Mack to flee and find help. Mack states that the attack left her with missing teeth, a broken rib, a ruptured liver and numerous cuts and bruises.

Koppenhaver went on the run and was caught 10 days later in California.

The embattled former UFC and Bellator fighter has been in trouble with the law for much of his adult life. In 2007, and then again in 2008, Koppenhaver was sentenced to probation stemming from violent charges. He was sentenced to a year in prison in 2010 for a felony assault charge stemming from a night-club fight and would go back to prison in 2012.

Koppenhaver is due back in court on October 17.

Attorney: People Need to Differentiate Between War Machine and Jon Koppenhaver

Former Bellator and UFC welterweight War Machine is just a character portrayed by Jonathan Koppenhaver, at least according to an attorney he hired to represent him in the Christy Mack assault case.

In a report from ABC affiliate KTNV Channel 13, War Machine's legal counsel in the matter—Brandon Sua—argues that the War Machine persona is just an act.

"War Machine's a character. He is an MMA fighter. He is controversial, and people need to understand where to draw that line from his character as War Machine and a person as Jon Koppenhaver."

Sua says War Machine's alleged violent encounter with porn star ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and former reality star Corey Thomas was the result of his client acting in self defense—a notion the fighter claimed weeks ago.

Steve Wolfson, the Clark County District Attorney, explained how War Machine now faces a jaw-dropping 32 charges—as opposed to the initial seven—and a possible life sentence if convicted.

"We learned that there were additional incidents of criminal conduct, and the law allows us to file an amended complaint, adding charges, and that's what we did."

Also worth noting from the report is that War Machine told the judge that is not his legal name, therefore, the court proceedings will address him as Jon Koppenhaver.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, who has a 14-5 ledger inside the cage, was denied bail and therefore will be held at the Clark County Detention Center until his October 17 court hearing.

Meanwhile, Mack is out of the hospital after nursing serious injuries that include missing teeth, a lacerated liver and various facial fractures and bruises
