A water-skier tragically killed while competing in a major event near the Victoria-NSW border has been remembered as an amazing and generous man with the 'most beautiful smile'.

Emergency services were called to an area near Perricoota Road, Echuca-Moama, about 10am on Sunday following reports a water-skier aged in early 40s fell into Echuca River while preparing for the Southern 80 race.

Luke Wentworth couldn't be revived and died at the scene.

It's understood the tragedy occurred within an hour of the race getting underway.

Mr Wentworth's death sparked an outpouring of tributes.

The race, attended by thousands of spectators, was cancelled following the tragedy as NSW Police launched an investigation.

'The investigation is only in its infancy and it is unfolding as we speak,' Moama Chief Inspector Paul Haggett told reporters.

'They affect all of the community from the emergency services to the bloke who runs the fish and chip shop.

'This will affect the community for months to come, long after everyone has gone home.'
