Movies Rugby World Cup FINAL: South Africa Beat New Zealand 11-12

2023 Rugby World Cup: Fiji Hit by SECOND Rugby World Cup Tragedy Ahead of Quarter-Final Clash With England

Northampton star Sam Matavesi has flown back to the UK after the death of his father and is now a doubt for Sundays' clash against Steve Borthwicks' side

BBC 12 OCT 2023

Fiji's hooker Sam Matavesi flew back to the UK earlier this week.

Sam Matavesi is tackled during the clash with Australia

Fiji have been hit by a second family tragedy just days before they take on England for a place in the World Cup semi-finals.

A week after the seven-year old son of Josh Tuisova passed away following a long illness, Sam Matavesi learned of the death of his father.

The Northampton hooker immediately flew to Cornwall, where his father lived, throwing into doubt his availability for Sunday’s clash. It is understood he plans to return to play and help his country’s quest for what would be an historic quarter-final win.

But assistant coach Seremaia Bai admitted it was another tough day for the Flying Fijians who have been away from home for 15 weeks.

“It’s a very tough moment…we need to stay together and care for one another,” said the former Leicester centre. “For us in Fiji family is everything. If one suffers, we all emotionally suffer.

“We are far away from Fiji, we have been 15 weeks from our own families since we started this campaign, so we have become very close and make sure that becomes our family.”

Fiji last reached the last-eight in 2007 when Baia was a part of the team which knocked out Wales in Nantes before losing to South Africa.

This year they have already made history by taking two Tier One scalps inside a month, beating England at Twickenham and Australia in the pool stages here.

And despite feeling certain that England will present an altogether tougher challenge this weekend, there is undeniable excitement among the Islanders squad at the opportunity they have.

“I don’t call it excitement, I call it crazy back home,” said Baia. “We’re passionate about rugby, everyone’s getting up early at three, five o’clock in the morning.

"People who are sick come alive when we win games. We’ve just got to make sure we’re not just playing for a quarter-final we’re playing for our people: young kids, people in the villages. It means a lot to them.”

Asked what a second win over England would mean to the 10th ranked nation, Baia allowed himself a smile. “If we win I think there will be a one-week holiday in Fiji,” he said. “It will be crazy.

Movies Re: 2023 Rugby World Cup: Fiji's 'Demolition Man' From Prison Officer to Quarter-Fina

Rugby World Cup 2023: Levani Botia on Fiji's Quarter-Final Against England

Working as a prison officer and went from playing on the wardens' team to becoming part of Fiji's sevens squad

BBC 14 OCT 2023

When Fiji's Levani Botia was young, he would climb mountains to watch his country play rugby.

That is not a metaphor. Growing up, Botia had a generator for electricity at home and would haul it to a high spot in search of reception for his television.

Knowing that many Fijians would do the same and more to watch him take on England in a World Cup quarter-final on Sunday, Botia is not short of motivation.

"Rugby is like something that goes through our blood, it does not matter your age," he says.

"We just climbed the mountain."

Now known as the 'Demolition Man', Botia's journey to becoming one of his team's star players has not always been straightforward.

He was working as a prison officer and went from playing on the wardens' team to becoming part of Fiji's sevens squad.

The now 34-year-old made the switch to 15-a-side at the end of 2013 and joined French club La Rochelle the following year, helping them to promotion and sticking around ever since.

"I think that's what rugby gave to me, it took me somewhere I didn't expect to be," reflects Botia.

"I didn't expect to be working in a prison. It's something that helps me on the rugby field. I know when things are hard, I think about when I started."

Having played in two previous World Cups at centre, Botia has been causing damage from the back row this time around.

His threat at the breakdown is such that England have called up Sam Underhill supposedly just so he can do his best Botia impression in training to prepare team-mates for what is to come.

Fiji forwards coach Graham Dewes - whose late try against Wales helped Fiji to their last World Cup quarter-final in 2007 - praised Botia's poaching ability.

"The good thing about Levani is, it's very important but he picks and chooses," Dewes explains.

"It's not like he attacks the ruck every time. When the opportunity arises, the Demolition Man will probably be there."

Botia played down his talents, adding: "What I do in the field, people say it's hard, but nothing's hard. Anyone can do that.

"If you play rugby you can do it, it's not difficult."

The Fijian has helped La Rochelle to two Champions Cup titles and now turns his attention to taking his country to a first World Cup semi-final.

He says Sunday's knockout fixture in Marseille is "one of the lifetime games".

The match against England will be Fiji's first World Cup quarter-final appearance since 2007, when they lost 37-20 to South Africa in the same stadium that will host them on Sunday.

As well as playing for history, Dewes says his players will be fighting for team-mates who are "hurting" after two family bereavements in the squad.

Josua Tuisova's seven-year-old son died before Fiji played Georgia in the pool stage and Sam Matavesi is expected back in camp having returned to England following the death of his father.

"In our team we love each other so much," Dewes said.

"Sam will come back into camp so we'll get around him. Those things will help motivate us. Those are the little things, well actually big things, that will help motivate us."

Dewes says there is a "big belief" in a squad that is aiming to "bypass" the achievements of the 2007 team.

Fiji claimed a first win against England at Twickenham in August and beat Australia for the first time at a World Cup earlier in this tournament.

Dewes says the Twickenham win "has given us a lot of confidence", adding: "For us now, it is do or die. We go hard at the weekend or we are going home early.

"I think Fiji on its day is capable of shocking the world. We've done it in the past, and if we stick to our gameplan, then we'll do it again."

Botia and his team-mates will be playing for Pacific rugby history - and the flanker will be playing for those who, just like him, would climb a mountain to watch.

"I think if you ask any Fijian, playing rugby now or young kids back at home, everyone loves rugby," he says.

"Back at home we'd sometimes try to play but didn't have a rugby ball. So we'd use anything - empty bottles, some of us used a coconut or something, just to play rugby.

"It's something we need to love, it's our job. It's something that brings us together."

The Rugby World Cup quarter-finals take place on Saturday and Sunday

Ireland Crash OUT of World Cup Following Agonizing New Zealand Defeat

Ireland suffered a narrow 28-24 defeat against New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final at the Stade de France on Saturday night.

BBC 15 OCT 2023

Ireland 24 New Zealand 28

Irelands' Rugby World Cup dream is over following an agonizing 28-24 defeat against New Zealand at the Stade de France on Saturday night.

It represents yet another quarter-final defeat for the Irish team at a Rugby World Cup, who have never made it past the last eight at the competition and have not led in a World Cup quarter-final since 1995.

This year was supposed to be different, though. Ireland are the number-one-ranked side in the world and had topped their pool having beaten world champions South Africa in a titanic tussle at the end of September. They had won 17 games in a row coming into this clash with the All Blacks, including two games against Saturday night's opponents.

Rugby World Cup: England Return Joy to Fans in Marseille by Reaching Semi-Finals

England Delivered Victory Against Fiji England 30 Fiji 24

BBC 16 OCT 2023

England mens' rugby fans may not have had much fun in the past year.

There was a disappointing Six Nations, a shaky World Cup preparation and a pool stage that threw up more questions than answers.

But in Marseille on Sunday, after a nerve-shredding World Cup quarter-final, there was joy.

Owen Farrell's late drop-goal and penalty concluded a promising match with a tense end to deliver victory against Fiji.

It brought a pure joy reminiscent of England's last World Cup knockout victory - a semi-final win against New Zealand in 2019.

The feeling may have tapered when the reality that they would have to face South Africa next after the Springboks' sublime win against France hit later on Sunday.

But England started well - better than they have in a year - with monstrous defence, thrilling attack and high intensity.

Fiji struck with, as England head coach Steve Borthwick put it, "a couple of thunderbolts" as they scored two tries in quick succession to level things late on, but England found a way to win.

'Find a way to win' has become a buzz phrase for Borthwick and his men - captain Owen Farrell mentioned it at least three times in his post-match news conference.

"In a period of time not that long ago, the England team probably isn't coming back to win that game," Borthwick said.

"This team did. There is a smartness about the team, a composure led by this man (Owen Farrell)."

But the joy for fans flowed from more than just the dramatic finish. Maybe it was even sweeter because of the dour year they have lived through since Eddie Jones was prematurely sacked and Borthwick stepped up at the end of 2022.

England 15-16 South Africa: Springboks Fightback

New Zealand Beat Argentina 44-6 to Reach Final

BBC 22 OCT 2023

England fell agonisingly short of a supreme upset and a fifth Rugby World Cup final as South Africa came on strong to snatch victory in Paris.

England were canny and committed in the first half, raining down kicks into the South Africa backfield, forcing a steady supply of penalties.

Owen Farrell converted four to send his side into the break with a 12-6 lead.

The Springboks chopped and changed their line-up after the break, but a Farrell drop-goal edged England further clear and to the brink of a seismic shock.

However, an RG Snyman try 10 minutes from time cut the underdogs' lead to 15-13 before the Boks' scrum power earned Handre Pollard the match-winning penalty in the 77th minute.

It was a brutal ending for an England team who had led from the third minute until three minutes from time.

New Zealand Beat Argentina

Will Jordan scored an impressive hat-trick as seven-try New Zealand crushed Argentina at Stade de France to reach a record fifth Rugby World Cup final.

The three-time winners were disciplined in defence and ruthless in attack as Jordan, Jordie Barrett and Shannon Frizell scored first-half tries.

Aaron Smith added a fourth after the break before Frizell crossed again and Jordan became the leading try scorer.

The All Blacks will face South Africa in next weeks' final.

Movies Re: Rugby World Cup FINAL: South Africa Beat New Zealand 11-12

New Zealand 11-12 South Africa: Springboks Win Record Fourth Rugby World Cup in Dramatic Final

Most DRAMATIC Rugby World Cup Final EVER..

BBC 29 OCT 2023

South Africa clinched a record fourth Rugby World Cup title by doing just enough to deny 14-man New Zealand and retain their crown in a helter-skelter final in Paris.

The Springboks seemed to have control when, with Handre Pollard's dead-eyed goalkicking having already given them a 9-3 lead, Sam Cane caught Jesse Kriel high in the 27th minute.

The New Zealand captain was shown a red card on review and another Pollard penalty left the All Blacks a man down, nine points behind and in deep trouble.

But New Zealand rallied, rode their luck and dragged themselves back into the game. Richie Mo'unga kicked a penalty before the break and Beauden Barrett scooped up a loose ball and slid in after the interval to cut South Africa's lead to 12-11.

Both teams pushed for a decisive score in an enthralling, lactic-drenched final quarter, but neither found one, with Jordie Barrett missing a long-range 73rd-minute penalty and the Springboks clinging on for a third successive one-point victory in the knockout stages.
