Nassar is said to have been stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another inmate at a federal prison in Florida. Two people familiar with the incident said the attack happened on Sunday, July 9, at United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida.

They said he was in a stable condition on Monday. One person said he had been stabbed in the back and the chest during the altercation.

It is not the first time Nassar has been attacked after a father of three daughters sexually abused by the disgraced doctor tried to attack him in court. After two of Randall Margrave's daughter gave evidence in court, the father asked Judge Janice Cuningham for time alone with their former doctor.

He said: "I would ask you as part of the sentencing to grant me five minutes in a locked room with this demon."

The judge denied his request, to which Mr Margraves shook his head and called Nassar a "son of a b***h" - for which he received a warning from the judge about his language. He then lunged at the former doctor, before being wrestled to the ground.

He was convicted of state and federal charges for sexually assaulting members of the USA gymnastics team and is serving his sentences, totalling decades, at a Florida prison. He admitted sexually assaulting athletes when he worked at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians.

Separately, Nassar also pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children.

In 2021, hundreds of women abused by Nassar reached a compensation deal woth $380 million (£287 million) after reaching a settlement with USA Gymnastics.

It ends a five-year legal battle that began in the wake of the huge abuse scandal that rocked US sport.

Athletes including a number of Olympic medallists testified about how Nassar sexually abused them.

Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to go public with allegations against Nassar in 2016, welcomed the news, writing on Twitter: "This chapter is finally closed."

She added: "Now the hard work of reform and rebuilding can begin. Whether or not justice comes and change is made, depends on what happens next."

The settlement covered claims brought by Olympic gold medallists including Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney.

In total, Nassar was accused of sexual abuse by more than 330 women and girls at USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University.

A report into an FBI investigation, which was published in 2021, found numerous missteps, delays and cover-ups by FBI agents, which allowed Nassar's abuse to continue for several more months after the case was first opened.

In 2015, USA Gymnastics informed local FBI agents that three gymnasts claimed they were assaulted by Nassar, who was working as a team doctor for the Indianapolis-based body.

However, the body failed to open a formal investigation or even inform federal and state authorities in Michigan, according to the Justice Department’s inspector general.

After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1985, Nassar joined the medical staff of the USA Gymnastics team.

Over two decades, he routinely abused girls who came to him for treatment - later admitting his conduct had no legitimate medical purpose and that he did not have their consent.

In 2015, USA Gymnastics sacked Nassar "after learning of athlete concerns". The following year, an IndyStar investigation found that authorities at the sports body had failed to alert authorities to multiple allegations of sexual abuse by coaches.

Two women, including an Olympics star, subsequently came forward with claims of abuse against Nassar, sparking a wave of complaints that eventually totalled more than 300 athletes.

These included Olympic gold medallists Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian.

In January 2018, Nassar was jailed after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting 125 girls and women between 1998 and 2015.

The following month, he was sentenced to an additional 40 to 125 years in jail for a further three sex offences.

"I just signed your death warrant," Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said in sentencing.

When the disgraced doctor asked to be removed from the courtroom because the trial was distressing him, she won plaudits for giving a voice to his victims.

"Spending four or five days listening to them is significantly minor considering the hours of pleasure you had at their expense and ruining their lives," she said.
