PELE: Brazil Legend Stable in Hospital With Respiratory Infection

PELE: Brazil legend & three-time World Cup winner says he is 'strong with a lot of hope'

Brazil great Pele is "still undergoing treatment and remains stable" according to a statement from his hospital in Sao Paulo.

BBC 4 DEC 2022

Brazil legend Pele has been diagnosed with a respiratory infection but is stable in hospital in Sao Paulo.

Concerns were raised on Wednesday when ESPN Brasil reported

Pele had been admitted to the Hospital Albert Einstein with "general swelling".

Pele, 82, thanked well-wishers for sending "good vibes" and confirmed it was a routine monthly visit.

A hospital statement said Pele was being treated with antibiotics and "the response has been adequate".

It added: "The patient, who remains in a common room, is stable, with general improvement in health status."

Pele will stay in hospital for the next few days.

The three-time World Cup winner had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and has since had regular treatment.

"Friends, I am at the hospital making my monthly visit," he wrote on Instagram with an image of a tribute to him at the Qatar World Cup.

"It's always nice to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute, and to everyone who sends me good vibes!"

ESPN Brasil also reported Pele was having cardiac issues and there were concerns that his chemotherapy treatment is not having the expected effect.

His daughter, Kely Nascimento, was moved to clarify on Instagram, saying: "There is no emergency or new dire prediction. He is in the hospital regulating medication."

Pele is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 games, and the former striker is one of only four players to have scored in four World Cup tournaments.

PELE: Brazils' Football Icon Dies Aged 82

In a poll conducted by BBC Sport in 2020, Pele was voted the greatest player, ahead of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff.

BBC News 29 DEC 2022

Pelé, Brazils’ ‘King of Soccer’

He is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

The only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was named Fifa's Player of the Century in 2000.

He had been suffering with kidney and prostate problems in recent years.

Pele had surgery to remove a tumour from his colon in September 2021 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, after the tumour was detected in routine tests. He was readmitted to hospital in late November 2022.

His daughter Kely Nascimento has kept fans updated on her father's condition with regular social media updates from hospital.

On Thursday she posted a picture of what appeared to be Pele's family's hands on his body in hospital and wrote: "Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace."

The hospital confirmed that Pele died "due to the failure of multiple organs, a result of the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous clinical condition".

Pele's Twitter account posted: "Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever."

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele, became a global star when, aged 17, he helped Brazil win the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, forcing his way into the starting line-up by the knockout stages.

He scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Wales in the quarter-finals, a hat-trick against France in the semi-final and two in a 5-2 triumph over the hosts in the final.

What made Pele great

Scored a reported 1,281 goals in 1,363 games Made 14 appearances at World Cup finals, scoring 12 goals
Racked up 126 goals in 1959 alone Only player to win three World Cups

Pele had made his debut for club side Santos two years earlier at the age of 15, scoring in a 7-1 win over Corinthians de Santo Andre.

It was the first of 643 goals he would score for the club in official competitions over 19 years, although Santos claim the total is more than 1,000

once exhibition matches - often against high-profile European opposition - are taken into account.

At the 1962 World Cup, Pele, then 21, scored a brilliant individual goal in a 2-0 win over Mexico to open their campaign, but was injured in the next match and watched from the sidelines as his team defended their title.

The final part of his trilogy of World Cup wins was his most iconic. After being fouled out of the 1966 tournament in England, he was the fulcrum of a thrilling attacking team that swept to the title in 1970, scoring the opening goal in a 4-1 win over Italy in the final.

From his joyful tears on the chest of team-mate Nilton Santos to his embrace with England captain Bobby Moore, Pele's moments of magic have spanned eras and defined the history of the sport.

He finished his club career as part of a star-studded New York Cosmos side, playing alongside German legend Franz Beckenbauer and fellow 1970 World Cup winner Carlos Alberto.

"In music there is Beethoven and the rest. In football, there is Pele and the rest," he said in 2000.

Pele celebrates winning the 1970 World Cup

He is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

Pele: A sporting icon who made football beautiful

The hospital confirmed that Pele died "due to the failure of multiple organs, a result of the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous clinical condition".

Pele's Twitter account posted: "Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele, who peacefully passed away today. Love, love and love, forever."

The Brazilian Football Confederation said: "Pele was much more than the greatest sportsperson of all time.

"Our king of football was the greatest exponent of a victorious Brazil, who was never afraid when faced with difficulty. He promised his father a World Cup and he presented us with three.

"The King gave us a new Brazil and we are so thankful for his legacy. Thank you, Pele."

Pele's former club Santos released details of his funeral. On Monday morning his body will be moved from the hospital to the club's Estadio Urbano Caldeira, where the coffin will be placed in the centre of the pitch for the public to pay respects.

On Tuesday, there will be a procession through the streets of Santos in Sao Paulo to a private family burial.

Peles' Funeral: Brazil Legend Given Joyous Send-Off

If Monday's wake for Brazilian football legend Pele was a day of reflection, Tuesday's funeral cortege was one of carnivalesque proportions.

BBC News 4 JAN 2023

The 82-year-old, who many regarded as the world's best football player, died on 29 December.

His coffin arrived in Santos on Monday, where thousands of mourners came to pay their respects at the ground of his former club - some even queued overnight.

On Tuesday, supporters' club Torcida Jovem gathered outside the Urbano Caldeira stadium ahead of the casket leaving. Fans waved huge black and white banners, the colours of Santos Football Club. Many wore the number 10 shirt that Pele made so famous.

"Only Pele, 1,000 goals," they repeatedly chanted as people beat drums and danced in the street.

His body was then accompanied for seven kilometres through the streets of Santos while helicopters flew overhead. His coffin was carried on a fire engine, as is traditional in official parades.

It travelled along the sea front and past Pele's mother's house - she turned 100 last year. There, a relative asked for a minute's silence and the party atmosphere hushed immediately as Doña Celeste clutched her hands in prayer.

These past few days have halted the busy coastal city of Santos.

--Thousands lined Santos streets for Pele's funeral

"He was important for the whole world, for young people too," said Marcia Simões, who was standing with her sons Eduardo and Mario at the road leading to Pele's burial place. "I'm prouder than ever to be from Santos."

That was a feeling echoed by so many mourners - that he was the best of Brazil.

"Everyone in Brazil wants to be a football player to imitate him," said Thiago Silva, one of the last people in the queue before the wake ended. "Of course, nobody can."

"My father was a Pele fanatic," said Sandra Garcia, who was with 11-year-old Enzo. "I got really emotional remembering my father - if he was alive, no question he would have been here crying. I grew up praising Pele, talking of him and telling stories about him - so it's important to be here."

Even for someone of Enzo's young age, Pele was a powerful influence.

"No question, he beats Cristiano Ronaldo by a long way," he said. "He's the best player of all time over several decades."

Beyond football, Pele united Brazilians by being their ambassador. In a country deeply divided politically and economically - people have only had good things to say about him.

The same could not be said of the country's new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who only this week took office for a third term. He arrived to pay his respects shortly before the wake ended and cheers for him competed with calls that he should be in prison.

President Lula was released in 2019 after spending 18 months in jail for corruption. His convictions were annulled in 2021.

The coming together of a nation in grief has been a welcome relief for so many in what has been a turbulent few months since the presidential elections.

"Pele united all of us," said Deofilo de Freitas, waiting in the queue. He was the first one in the line on Monday but wanted another chance to see his idol before he was laid to rest. "Not only was he the best player in the world, he was a marvellous human being."
