The WORLDs' Most Famous Horse Race & what a story! NOBLE YEATS wins the 2022 Grand National at 50/1

Dental practice owner wins Grand National 2022 on 50-1 long shot Noble Yeats

This is it – the big one! Grand National day has finally arrived at Aintree with a huge crowd for the world's most famous steeplechase.

After all, no punters have been able to see this race in-person in three years. The 2020 race was called off due to the pandemic, while last year's event was held behind closed doors. This time, though, the stands at Aintree are full once again as the full glitz and glamour of the National returns.

Also returning is the formidable partnership of Minella Times and jockey Rachael Blackmore, who come into the feature race as defending chamch?v=haxJBs0ucCcpions. They will hope to receive the adulation of the bumper crowd after winning in front of empty grandstands in 2021.

Discorama Dies After Grand National Injury as Trainer Reveals He is Heartbroken

Discorama was pulled up in the 2022 Grand National. Trainer Paul Nolan took to social media on Saturday evening to confirm the sad news about the two-time winner

Daily Mirror 10 APR 2022

A trainer has been left "heartbroken" by the death of his horse in the 2022 Grand National.

Discorama died after being pulled up with an injury before the 13th fence of the Aintree race. Bryan Cooper reported that the two-time winner was lame – and on Saturday evening, trainer Paul Nolan confirmed the injury was fatal.

He said on Twitter : "We are heartbroken to have lost Discorama today at Aintree. Bryan pulled him up due to injury. Our condolences to his owners Andrew Gemmell & Tom Friel."

After the race, all horses returned to the stables and no serious medical concerns were reported regarding any jockeys. However, a tragic update has now been given following further assessment by the Aintree veterinary team.

Professor Chris Proudman, Veterinary Advisor to Aintree Racecourse, said: “After the race, Discorama, who had pulled up while travelling on the flat between fences, was assessed further in Aintree’s veterinary treatment facility within the stables. Very sadly we determined that he had sustained an untreatable pelvic injury and it has now been necessary to put him to sleep on welfare grounds. Our thoughts are with his connections.”

Discorama, who was trained in Ireland, won two races his his career, at Naas and Fairyhouse. Outside of his home country, he competed in many big races, including last year's Grand National.

He finished seventh on that occasion, as Rachael Blackmore became the first female rider to win the £1million race on Minella Times. Discorama ran at the Cheltenham Festival on three occasions, finishing in the places each time.

He was the runner-up in the 2018 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle and the following year's National Hunt Chase. In 2020, the son of Saddler Maker was third in the Ultima Handicap Chase.

Overall he earned connections just over £120,000 in prize money from 22 career starts. Nolan was sent hundreds of messages of condolence by racing fans after the loss of his stable star.

One said: "So so sorry to read this. Thoughts are with all concerned." Another added: "Sorry Paul. Desperate news."

A third person wrote: "Oh goodness I am so sorry, I was really hoping for a positive outcome when I saw him pull up so quickly. Thinking of you all and sending love."

A horse died in the previous two runnings of the race. The Long Mile broke down between fences in 2021, while Up For Review was brought down at the first in 2019. None of the three incidents were related to the jumps in the race.

After the course was modified, in the six years from 2013 to 2018 there were no fatal injuries.

Earlier in the afternoon, Est Elle Belle tragically died in a hurdles race on the Grand National card. In 2021 she was placed at both the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National meetings.

UPDATE

Eclair Surf Becomes Second Horse to Die From Injuries Sustained in Grand National

Eclair Surf failed to recover after a heavy fall at the third fence of the Aintree showpiece. The Irish-trained Discorama also suffered a fatal injury

Eclair Surf failed to recover from injuries sustained in the Grand National

A second horse has died after failing to recover from injuries sustained in the Randox Grand National.

Eclair Surf, who was among the market leaders for the race, suffered a heavy fall at the third fence in Saturday’s contest that was won by Noble Yeats.

His trainer Emma Lavelle announced the news on Twitter on Sunday morning.

“We are very sad to report that having sustained a traumatic head injury in yesterday's Grand National, Eclair Surf lost his fight this morning.

“He was looked after at the racecourse by a team of first-class vets before being transferred to Liverpool University who treated him all night, however very sadly it was not to be.

“He was an incredibly special horse, loved by everyone and he will be missed terribly.”

Chris Proudman, Veterinary Advisor to Aintree Racecourse, said: “We were sad to learn that Eclair Surf had to be put to sleep this morning. After his fall yesterday he was stabilised on course before walking onto transport back to the stables. Following further veterinary evaluation he was referred to Leahurst Equine Hospital last night.
Everything possible will have been done for him and our thoughts are very much with those who loved and cared for him.”

Eclair Surf only just sneaked into the race on Thursday and was heavily backed by punters.

He won the Classic Chase at Warwick in January and was second in the Eider Chase at Newcastle

On Saturday night, just after 7.30pm, it was confirmed that Discorama had suffered a fatal injury.

His heartbroken trainer Paul Nolan tweeted: "We are heartbroken to have lost Discorama today at Aintree. Bryan pulled him up due to injury. Our condolences to his owners Andrew Gemmell & Tom Friel."

About half an hour after the National, the racecourse’s preliminary statement said that all horses had returned to the stables although some were being "assessed".
