Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson was indicted on drug charges Thursday in Covington, Ky., The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. The indictment charges Simpson with trafficking in more than eight ounces and less than five pounds of marijuana, a felony, Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders told the newspaper. Simpson could face one to five years in prison if convicted. The indictment comes nearly four months after federal authorities confiscated a package containing 2.5 pounds of marijuana that was allegedly shipped from California to Simpson's northern Kentucky home. Investigators said they also found six more pounds of marijuana inside the house, as well as drug paraphernalia such as packaging materials, scales and smoking devices. Simpson finished third on the Bengals with 50 catches for 725 yards and four touchdowns. He made one of the highlight plays of the season with a touchdown flip several yards from the goal line into the end zone. But in addition to his legal situation, Simpson struggled with drops and route-running, making it likely that this season was his last in Cincinnati. The Bengals are expected to seek an upgrade at the No. 2 wide receiver position in free agency. Jamison Hensley writes about the AFC North for ESPN.com.
