Tour de France Fan That Caused Chaotic Crash Facing Jail Term as Police Launch Search

The spectator is being hunted by officials after fleeing the scene moments after her actions led to 21 riders sustaining injuries during stage one of the tour as organisers slammed her "unacceptable" behaviour

Daily Mirror UK, 28 JUN 2021

The fan who inadvertently caused a major pile-up on the first day of the Tour de France could be facing a jail term as police have launched their search for the culprit.

Stage one of the 108th edition of the competition was thrown into disarray just minutes after starting as a female spectator sparked a huge crash as her sign took out a rider near the town of Saint-Cadou.

Jumbo Visla cyclist Tony Martin was on the right-hand side of the pack as they raced away from the starting line and could do little to avoid the fan, who was facing away from the group and showing her sign to the passing cameras.

Martin ploughed into her outstretched arm and sign - which was written in a mixture of French and German and read "Come on grandad-granny".\

The collision sent him and his bike tumbling to the ground as the chaos ensued, with limbs and wheels flying everywhere, eventually leaving 21 riders with injuries, while the fan was nowhere to be seen once the dust from the melee had settled.

Prosecutors in Brittany are now seeking the fan as part of a criminal enquiry into the incident for 'deliberately violating safety regulations and so causing injuries that might prevent someone working for up to three months’.

Martin was fortunately able to continue with the race but did so with cuts and grazes evident on his arm and legs, as did the eventual stage winner Julian Alaphilippe.4

Others were not so lucky, as nine riders received official treatment, with Marc Hirschi of Team UAE Emirates suffering a separated shoulder, while German rider Jasha Sutterlin even had to withdraw from the race completely as his injuries were so severe.

A spokesman for the Gendarmerie du Finistère in the region said: "The spectator who caused this accident left the scene before the arrival of the investigators.

"Everything is being done to try and find her.

"She was wearing glasses and dressed in blue jeans, a red and white striped sweater, and a waxed yellow jacket."

Her actions could now be punishable by up to one year in prison, as well as considerable fines totalling a maximum of £13,000, reports The Mail.

Tournament organisers are also looking to sue the fan as they began legal proceedings.

Deputy race director of the Tour, Pierre-Yves Thouault, said: "This is unacceptable behaviour. There are safety rules to follow. Spectators don't cross the road, they don't take selfies.

"Frankly, her attitude was insane. The show is the riders, not spectators who want to be on TV.

"The Tour must remain a party but because of the attitude of a very small minority, it is ruined. We can no longer accept this.

"We are suing this woman who behaved so badly.

"We are doing this so that the tiny minority of people who do this don't spoil the show for everyone."

Former British Olympian and 2012 Tour winner Bradley Wiggins had little sympathy for the fan, as he told Eurosport: "They're part and parcel of the spectacle of the Tour de France. And this year, in particular, being able to come back onto the route and watch it. I don't know how you police it."

Meanwhile the Tour released an official statement which read: "'We're glad to have the public on the side of the road on the #TDF2021.

"But for the Tour to be a success, respect the safety of the riders! Don't risk everything for a photo or to get on television!'"
