England Charged by UEFA After Fan Shines Laser Pen at Kasper Schmeichels’ Face

England charged over laser pen incident as second ball on pitch also adds to winning penalty controversy
Kasper Schmeichel saved Kane's penalty, but attempts to distract him added to the controversy - and now

England charged by UEFA after fan shines laser pen at Kasper Schmeichel’s face and crowd boos Denmark national anthem

ENGLAND have been hit with three charges from UEFA after their sensational 2-1 Euro 2020 semi-final victory against Denmark.

A laser pen was shone in Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel's eyes just before Harry Kane took his penalty.

Miraculously the Leicester star still managed to save the spot-kick before Kane tucked home the rebound.

UEFA have charged England for this, as well as for fans booing the Danish national anthem and for 'letting off fireworks'.

A statement from the football governing body added:

"The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due course."

The 24-team tournament was originally due to be held in the summer of 2020 but was postponed by 12 months due to the coronavirus pandemic. A dozen cities from 12 UEFA countries will host matches with the final taking place at Wembley.

The UK Government have said the venue will be at 75 percent capacity for the occasion with roughly 60,000 fans allowed to attend the match.

Englands' Euro 2020 dream ends in heartbreak as country weeps for Southgate's men

England suffer cruel defeat but Gareth Southgate and his players lit up the summer

The excitement, the hope, the dream of winning a major trophy after 55 years ended for England’s footballers, and fans, after the Three Lions lost out on penalties

The heartbreaking defeat for England meant Italy, now unbeaten for 34 games, were crowned the winners of Euro 2020, taking home the trophy after a 3-2 win on penalties. Luke Shaw scored after two minutes, Leonardo Bonucci equalised in the 67th but England missed three of their five penalties in the decider. Marcus Rashford hit the post, Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Jadon Sancho before saving Bukayo Saka’s spot-kick.

Manager Gareth Southgate says "they have given the country some unbelievable memories". Describing the defeat as "incredibly painful", he says players gave "everything they possibly could" and it came as the Football Association condemned racist abuse on social media aimed at Rashford, Sancho and Saka, which the Metropolitan Police is investigating.

Officers made a number of arrests before Sunday night’s game, of which the result from penalties left Italy’s fans ecstatic with jubilant celebrations at Wembley and back home while England supporters couldn’t hide their disappointment.

“It’s a shame, it’s not coming home” was some of the reaction but one fan said despite the loss, “the team has brought the country together, everyone has been loving life in these hard times."

Petition for Italy vs England Euro 2020 FINAL to be Replayed Hits 100,000 Signatures

Italy beat England on penalties in the final at Wembley on Sunday, but many England supporters have - somewhat hopefully - called for the match to be replayed

Daily Mirror UK, 13 JUL 2021.

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incomin...1-Jul-2021.jpg

Over 100,000 people have signed a change.org petition bizarrely calling for England's Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy to be replayed.

The Three Lions lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley on Sunday evening, where Luke Shaw raised English hopes by giving them the lead inside two minutes.

The Italians forced their way back into the match and deservedly levelled through Leonardo Bonucci in the second period.

Roberto Mancini's side then prevailed 3-2 in a penalty shootout as Marcus Rashford shot wide and both Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka had their efforts saved by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

England boss Gareth Southgate was keen to stress how proud he was of his team after the match.

"In terms of the players, they’ve given everything they could have – not only tonight but through the whole tournament," said Southgate.

"They should hold their heads high.

"They’re a team who have pulled together, given the country some incredible evenings but of course tonight the devastation of getting so close and not being able to give our country the trophy we wanted to is difficult to put into context.

"You can imagine how the dressing room is so that of course is difficult to put into words at the moment but in terms of the players they’ve given absolutely everything and I’m very proud of them."

Southgate had no criticism for Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers after the match, but it seems as though many supporting England thought differently.

In the UK, a peak audience of 31 million people watched the match across both BBC and ITV, and some fans were left incensed.

A change.org petition to replay the match was started on the grounds that it apparently "was not fair at all", with an image of Giorgio Chiellini's now infamous foul on Saka - which the Italian defender was booked for - used to highlight this apparent unfairness.

It is added that there were "pushes, pulls and kicks" from the victorious Italians, who - it is said - should have had "a red card for their gameplay" with the match replayed with a "non-biased" referee, presumably to give England a better chance of winning.

Over 100,000 people had signed the petition by Tuesday lunchtime, perhaps not all entirely seriously.

Earlier in the tournament some 270,000 people signed a petition on French website Les Lignes Bougent (LLB) calling for the France vs Switzerland last-16 match to be replayed.

Those signing were complaining that Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer was off his line when he saved the decisive penalty from Kylian Mbappe in the shootout, although that was later proved to be incorrect.

The petition was later taken down by the person who started it, with an LLB statement issued calling for the French to be "good players" and accept Switzerland's victory.

England Could be Forced to Play Without Fans After UEFA Investigates FINAL Chaos

UEFA investigation into violence and storming of Wembley
FA charged over booing of Italian anthem and other behaviour

The Guardian UK, 14 JUL 2021

England face being handed a stadium ban by Uefa after the governing body opened an investigation into the chaotic and violent scenes at Wembley around the Euro 2020 final, meaning one or more of their Nations League games next year could be played behind closed doors.

The Football Association faces an anxious wait to see what Uefa’s ethics and disciplinary committee makes of what became a disturbingly unruly afternoon on Sunday. Uefa said its investigation would be into “events involving supporters which occurred inside and around the stadium”; it is already understood that hundreds of people without tickets attempted to break through barriers, turnstiles and gates to enter Wembley, and that a significant number succeeded in doing so.

Police form a cordon around England fans outside Wembley before the Euro 2020 final.

Uefa separately charged the FA over fans’ behaviour inside the ground before and during the game, which England lost on penalties against Italy. Those offences were invasion of the pitch, throwing of objects, booing of the Italian national anthem and the lighting of a firework.

The FA was fined £25,630 after crowd trouble of a similar nature at the semi-final against Denmark last Wednesday and it will face a heftier bill if found guilty this time. On that occasion a laser pen was shone at the goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, the Danish national anthem was booed and fireworks were set off

Although a stadium ban would be at the sharp end of Uefa’s punishment scale, the scenes on Sunday are likely to be looked upon dimly. Should England be forced to play in front of empty stands, they would be required to do so in their next match – or matches – under Uefa’s direct jurisdiction. That means their Fifa-run World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary this autumn would be unaffected, but games in the 2022-23 Nations League campaign could be at risk.

Uefa has shown this summer that it is willing to clamp down on associations whose fans misbehave seriously at venues. This month it ordered Hungary to play two games behind closed doors in Uefa competition, and pay a €100,000 (£85,500) fine, for racist and homophobic abuse during the Euro 2020 group stage
