European Super League: Premier League Big Six Agree to Join New League

BBC News •19 Apr 2021

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are among 12 clubs who have agreed to join a new European Super League (ESL).

In a seismic move for European football, the Premier League clubs will join AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.

The ESL said the founding clubs had agreed to establish a "new midweek competition" with teams continuing to "compete in their respective national leagues".

It said the inaugural season was "intended to commence as soon as practicable" and "anticipated that a further three clubs" would join the breakaway.

The ESL said it also planned to launch a women's competition as soon as possible after the men's tournament starts.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Uefa and the Premier League condemned the move when the news broke on Sunday.

European Super League / UK Government, FA and UEFA Unite to Denounce Plans

The UK government and football’s authorities yesterday launched a furious counter-offensive against plans that threaten the entire structure of the club game

Dowden pledges to do ‘whatever it takes’ to thwart plans.. Poll finds 79% of football fans opposed to breakaway

The Guardian UK, 20 APR 2021.

The UK government and football’s authorities launched a furious counter-offensive on Monday against plans for a European Super League that threaten the entire structure of the club game.

The culture secretary, Oliver Dowden, supported by Downing Street, vowed to do “whatever it takes” to thwart the plans which feature 12 “founding members” including six leading clubs from England. European football’s governing body, Uefa, also threatened to ban any players involved from next year’s World Cup.

Prince William, the president of the Football Association, said he shared the concerns of fans and warned that the move by the breakaway clubs – Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – “risked damaging the game we love”. In a rare invention he added: “Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community – from the top level to the grassroots – and the values of competition and fairness at its core.”

The proposals, unveiled late on Sunday, would see the Champions League supplanted as the dominant European competition. The “founder members” would be included automatically in the new super league, regardless of results. The football pyramid, which sees clubs rise and fall on merit, would be compromised. The other founder members are Spanish giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, and the Italian clubs Juventus, Internazionale and AC Milan.

Addressing parliament, Dowden said the government would consider using competition laws and changes to club ownership structures to stop the Super League, which would see 15 founding members – with three more expected to join – share a £200-£300m “golden hello”, with five other clubs invited to take part every year.

“It was a tone-deaf proposal, but the owners of those clubs won’t have been able to ignore the near universal roar of outrage from all parts of the football community over the past 24 hours,” said Dowden. “This is a sport where a team like Leicester City can ascend from League One to the Premier League title in under a decade, earning the right to go toe-to-toe against European heavyweights in the Champions League.

“Instead, a small handful of owners want to create a closed shop of elite clubs at the top of the game – a league based on wealth and brand recognition rather than upon merit. We will not stand by and watch football be cravenly stripped of the things that make millions across the country love it.”

Asked by Julian Knight, the Conservative MP who chairs the culture, media and sport committee, what specific actions might be taken, Dowden replied: “What does the government do to facilitate matches, and facilitate those clubs, and looking at whether we should continue to provide that support.” He gave no more details, but possible avenues could be to restrict work permits for overseas players or to make it harder for clubs to have travel exemptions during the pandemic.

Dowden added that he knew “from my conversations with the Premier League they’re already proposing to take some pretty draconian steps to stop this”. A DCMS source, meanwhile, insisted that “everything is on the table”.

The government’s intervention came on another extraordinary day during which:

A YouGov poll found that 79% of football fans opposed the creation of the European Super League

European Super League Collapses

European Super League: All six Premier League teams withdraw from competition

BBC News, 22 APR 2021.

All six Premier League teams involved in the European Super League (ESL) have now withdrawn from the competition.

Manchester City were the first club to pull out after Chelsea had signalled their intent to do so by preparing documentation to withdraw.

The other four sides - Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham - have all now followed suit.

Italian side Inter Milan are also set to withdraw as they no longer wish to be involved with the project.

BBC Sport understands bosses at the Serie A club are preparing for their exit following Tuesday night's dramatic developments.

How football's volatile 48 hours unfolded

The 12-team Super League, set up by the seven afore-mentioned teams and Spain's Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid and Italy's AC Milan and Juventus was announced on Sunday to widespread condemnation.

"Despite the announced departure of the English clubs, forced to take such decisions due to the pressure put on them, we are convinced our proposal is fully aligned with European law and regulations," the ESL said on Wednesday, adding it was "convinced that the current status quo of European football needs to change".

In an interview with Italian newspaper la Repubblica, Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli said the remaining clubs will "press ahead" and the project still had "a 100% chance of being a success".

"Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is insisting on the idea of keeping the group together to push for change," says Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

Soccer US Glazer Family GREED Causes Fans To Invade MU Ground & STOP Game

Manchester United v Liverpool Game Postponed After MASS Anti-Glazers Fan Protest

Manchester United's Premier League game against Liverpool was postponed after about 200 fans broke into Old Trafford to protest against the Glazer family's ownership of the club.

Glazer Family Net worth: $4.6 billion (celebritynetworth.com)

BBC News •3 May 2021

"This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities," said the Premier League.

Police said two officers had been injured during the protests.

It is the first time a Premier League match has been postponed because of fan protests.

Fans had gathered outside the ground and scores of green and gold flares - the colours of United's first shirts when they were formed as Newton Heath in 1878, and of the original anti-Glazer protests in 2010 - were set off at 14:00.

The protests follow United's decision, along with five fellow Premier League clubs, to join the European Super League (ESL) last month, before subsequently all pulling out.

Supporters are currently not allowed into grounds because of the coronavirus pandemic but some United fans got onto the Old Trafford pitch to protest and, even though they were removed, some then made it back onto the grass later on.

"The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance," added the Premier League.

"We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated Covid-19 breaches.

"We sympathise with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football."

The Football Association will be liaising with United, the Premier League and safety authorities to find out exactly what happened and the reasons for it.
