Boxing Anthony Joshua Fight Against Dillian Whyte

Anthony Joshua Fight Against Dillian Whyte to be Shown on Sky Sports Box Office as Heavyweight Looks to Extend Winning Streak

  • Anthony Joshua's fight will be fourth on the channel this year
  • Heavyweight Joshua has stopped each of his 14 opponents to date inside three rounds
  • It joins Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao and Kell Brook's title defence
  • Year-end show is likely to be cost viewers £16.95
Daily Mail UK, 14 November 2015

Anthony Joshua’s toughest professional test to date - against amateur rival Dillian Whyte - will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Heavyweight Joshua has stopped each of his 14 opponents to date inside three rounds and will bid to avenge his 2009 defeat to Whyte on December 12. It will the fourth show to be screened on the pay-per-view channel this year following Floyd Mayweather’s victory over Manny Pacquiao, Kell Brook’s world title defence against Frankie Gavin and Tyson Fury’s challenge for the world heavyweight crown against Wladimir Klitschko in two weeks’ time.

Heavyweight Joshua has stopped each of his 14 opponents to date inside three rounds and will bid to avenge his 2009 defeat to Whyte on December 12.

Whyte, who beat Joshua when they were both amateurs, will be Joshua's toughest professional test so far

Nathan Cleverly’s rematch with Tony Bellew was also shown on the platform last year and Carl Frampton’s eagerly-anticipated unification clash with Scott Quigg will follow suit next February.
No price for the year-end show has been announced but is likely to be set at £16.95.

Sky Sports abandoned the model after David Haye lost to Klitschko in 2011 but re-introduced it two years later for Carl Froch’s rematch with Mikkel Kessler.

Another of Froch’s rematches, against George Groves at Wembley, was also deemed Box Office worthy.

It will be one of four fights on the channel this year, alongside Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao from May

Joshua’s fight with Whyte, which will take place in December, will be for the British and Commonwealth titles

Chris Eubank Jnr's clash with Spike O’Sullivan will support the fight on December 12 at the O2

Joshua’s fight with Whyte, which will be for the British and Commonwealth titles, will be supported by Chris Eubank Jnr clash with Spike O’Sullivan.
The two middleweights will fight it out for the right to challenge for the WBA world title against either Danny Jacobs or Peter Quillin.

Joshua said: ‘This is a huge end to a great year for me. Headlining The O2 and being selected to fight on Sky Sports Box Office is another massive step in my professional career.
‘I have been working hard in the gym so I am looking forward to delivering an early Christmas present to all my fans who will be watching at home or live in the arena.’

Boxing Anthony Joshua Ready to Drop IBF Title for Wladimir Klitschko Rematch

Anthony Joshua Ready to Drop IBF Title for Wladimir Klitschko Rematch, > Echoing Tyson Fury's Fate

  • Anthony Joshuacould be stripped of one of his newly-won belts
  • Promoter Eddie Hearn says Joshua has 'no problem' giving up IBF world title
  • A rematch with Wladimir Klitschko would see him drop the belt
  • IBF insist mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev must be his next opponent
Daily Mail UK, 4 May 2017

Anthony Joshua could be stripped of one of his newly-won belts before his next fight, because of a rematch clause with Wladimir Klitschko.Joshua added IBO and WBA Super World Heavyweight belts to the IBF belt that he already held by knocking out the Ukrainian last week.

But now he could have to give up the IBF title, just as Tyson Fury did after defeating Klitschko, because the federation has a mandatory challenger who he must fight next.

Anthony Joshua could be forced to give up his IBF belt, one of three he won last week

Joshua added the IBO and WBA belts to his IBF title by knocking out Wladimir Klitschko

But Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn says his fighter has 'no problem' dropping the IBF belt

Fury was also stripped of the IBF belt, because he, like Joshua, had agreed to a rematch with Klitschko.
And Joshua would be happy to do the same, with a rematch prioritised over a bout with mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev, according to promoter, and Sportsmail columnist, Eddie Hearn.

'Talks with the IBF and Pulev's promoter Team Sauerland are ongoing'
'By the weekend we should have some clarity but it is very complicated'.

'We don't want to drop the IBF belt but if we have to we'll have no problem doing exactly that.
'We won't let boxing politics get in the way of AJ's progression. Ideally, we want all the belts but when you get close, it becomes difficult because of situations like this.
'This is not going away, the IBF always follow their rules just as they did with Fury.
'We could look to do a deal with Pulev and try to make an interim bout for the belt — with the winner of that to face AJ.'

Tyson Fury was stripped of the IBF title for the same reason when he beat Klitschko

Boxer's Brother Stops Man Opening Door of Mid Air Flight

Man Restrained After Trying to Open Door of BA Aircraft in Midair

Exclusive: Passengers Step in as Man Having Panic Attack Pulls Door Lever on Flight to Riyadh

The Guardian UK, 3 DEC 2019.

A man suffering a panic attack tried to open the door of a British Airways flight to Saudi Arabia in midair but was stopped by fellow passengers, including the brother of the boxer Dillian Whyte.

The incident occurred on Monday night about an hour before BA flight 263 from Heathrow to Riyadh was due to land in the Saudi capital.

Without warning a clearly agitated man started trying to pull the lever on the door at the back of the plane while screaming “I want to get out” in broken English.

Another passenger, Ian McNally, quickly spotted what was happening and tried to intervene. Shortly afterwards the 6ft 7in Dean Whyte, who was sat in a nearby seat in economy, was alerted to the commotion and rushed down the aisle to assist - along with other members of the fighter’s entourage and an air steward.

Dean Whyte, the brother of boxer Dillian Whyte, helped pull the man away from the aircraft’s door.

Whyte was able to grab the man in a bearhug and pull him away from the door, while repeatedly telling him: “Calm down, bruv.”

At that point half a dozen more air stewards, one carrying handcuffs, rushed down the plane to help. Finally after a few minutes of angry pointing and shouting from the passenger, he calmed down and was brought back to his seat.

Whyte was travelling to Saudi Arabia to support his brother, who is fighting on the undercard of the Andy Ruiz Jr v Anthony Joshua heavyweight title fight on Saturday night.

Joshua’s mother Yeta Odusanya was also on the plane, along with several members of staff for Matchroom Sport, who are promoting the fight.

A clearly shaken McNally later confirmed to the Guardian that he had given a statement to the flight crew, and praised the efforts of Whyte. “I was mightily relieved when I saw him rushing to help,” he added.

Another who witnessed the incident but did not want to be named said he was frozen in panic as the incident unfolded. “I thought that was it,” he said.

“Everyone who intervened were heroes.”

Whyte told the Guardian: “It was like something out of a movie. When I got there he was shouting ‘I want to get out’ in broken English. I managed to grab him and was preparing to slam him hard if necessary but myself and the steward could see he wasn’t quite right in the head so I held him and tried to calm him down.

Eventually it worked.”

A British Airways flight attendant confirmed to the Guardian that the incident had been reported to the authorities. “I have never seen anything like that before,” he added.

The airline said it was impossible for an aircraft door to open in flight. A spokesperson said: “Our cabin crew cared for a customer who suffered from a panic attack during the flight. We are sorry for any concern this caused our customers.”

Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jr 2 Full Fight 7 December 2019 in Saudi Arabia

Joshua battered Andy Ruiz over 12 rounds . The fight, in Saudi Arabia, was a rematch after the Mexican stunned Joshua earlier this year in one of boxings biggest ever upsets.

Anthony Joshua responds to demand to fight Oleksandr Usyk or give up belt

8 DEC 2019

Joshua won back his three heavyweight belts by beating Andy Ruiz Jr - but will be forced to give one up

Anthony Joshua has welcomed a fight against the dangerous Oleksandr Usyk.

The Briton won back his three heavyweight world titles last night by outpointing Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia.

In doing so he exacted revenge for his defeat by the Mexican-American six months ago in New York.

But with both the WBO and IBF demanding he fight his mandatory challengers next, Joshua is set to give up one of the belts.

He will likely have the option of either facing former unified cruiserweight champion Usyk or Kubrat Pulev who pulled out of a fight with Joshua in 2017 due to injury.

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: "There's an IBF mandatory, there's a WBO mandatory. Tonight's about celebrating the victory. His first mandatory was Kubrat Pulev, he pulled out, he faced Carlos Takam on a week's notice.

"His WBA mandatory was Alexander Povetkin. Nobody wanted to fight Alexander Povetkin at the time, he took care of that mandatory as well.

"Kubrat Pulev is the IBF mandatory, Oleksandr Usyk is the WBO mandatory, and I see him wanting to take both of those fights as well.

Boxing Anthony Joshua's Motivation For Learning to Box

Anthony Joshua's Grim Motivation For Learning to Box - and Why He Refuses to be Flash

Anthony Joshua opened up on run-ins with the law before his success at the Olympics and how the experiences gave him the discipline required to succeed in the sport

Daily Mirror UK, 30 JUL 2020

Anthony Joshua won Olympic gold at the age of 22 with just five years of boxing experience under his belt.

The career that followed has lived up to the promise of the rapid rise that took Joshua from a raw, exciting talent at London 2012 to the top of the sport as a two-time unified heavyweight champion eight years later.

Before his Olympic dream turned reality, his life had reached a crossroads after two separate incidents with the police - including one when he was wearing his Team GB tracksuit - that almost derailed his boxing career before it began.

In 2009, Joshua was put on remand in Reading Prison for two weeks for "fighting and other crazy stuff" and he says he began boxing and weightlifting in preparation for a potential prison sentence.

Joshua began learning to box when he was released on bail

"I think I was looking at 15 years, I thought 'I'll do that easy'," he told Ebro Darden on Apple Music's Songs for Life podcast.

"So I would have been out like two years ago. I was like 'cool, no problem. If it's guilty, it's guilty'. It's just a mindset, my mindset was in a different place. It was a don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time type of mindset. "

Opening up on his experience during his time at the prison, he said: "I remember these little kids, not kids but people who were my age, who were hype. You know that one kid at the back just shouting and we're just trying to chill, this is our time out of the cell. I look back and he's like 'what are you looking at?’ and I say 'Who are you talking to?'

"When I got bail that's when I started learning how to box and lift weights because I thought if I'm going to do a long sentence and I've got these little idiot kids in the jail, I'm going to come in there and I'm going to back myself.

"I started pumping weights, me and my cousin. He used to come over to mine and we bought one of these all-in-one weight machines so we just put it in the living room and we'd just be bench pressing and listening to like Papoose, 50 Cent Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

"I didn't have a clue, I thought it was like bench press and press ups, then he showed me shoulder press, delts, and I say yeah, now I’m about my business.

"Signed up to one of these hard man gyms, because I was on tag - obviously I’m out on bail conditions so I've got the tag on my leg - so I have to be home at 8 O'clock every day. I was in a strict routine at a time when I was only 17/18, and I think that's what helped me with my boxing that when I came off of tag I was already in a position where I was ready to take off with boxing.

"I just had to kind of, whatever work the devil had for me, I had to block out and stay focused on the righteous path. And that’s still about today but I know how to manage it."

He's now a two-time unified heavyweight champion (Image: AFP via Getty Images)

As a result, the love he discovered for boxing led Joshua to join Finchley Amateur Boxing Club in Barnet, North London, where his success in domestic tournaments earned him a place on the GB team.

A year before the Olympics he says he was earning about £500 a month but had "seen more money than that before" so it wasn't enough of an incentive to keep him away from "opportunities that came my way at that time".

Driving through a London estate in a Mercedes wearing his GB tracksuit, Joshua says he was pulled over by three undercover police officers, who found cannabis in his car.

"I thought 'Should I run?’ Normally that’s the case, but my whip was there, my phone, I was obviously part of the Olympic team.

"So I just dealt with it like a man. Got charged, it was, you know, nine ounces, so personal use or whatever you want to call it. I done my community service, I got banned from the Olympic team though which was a tough time."

He added: "I learned how to get smarter, that was the most important thing. Secondly, change my car - too flash. And that's why I think now, especially as a boxer, I know how to keep low-key, I'm not too flash.

"I learned the art of bouncing back."
