Trump Threatens 250% Tariffs on Pharmaceuticals & New Duties on Foreign Semiconductors
Donald Trump has dramatically escalated his trade rhetoric, warning that tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals could soar to as much as 250% as part of a broader push to bring manufacturing back to American soil. Irish Central 6 AUG 2025 https://www.irishcentral.com/uploads...g?t=1754469211 We'll be putting initially small tariff on pharmaceuticals, but in one year maximum, its going to go to 150%, he said. And then its going to go to 250% because we want pharmaceuticals made in our country, Trump added. In the same interview, he said he also intends to unveil new duties on foreign semiconductors. Both sectors had previously been the subject of national security investigations under his administration, which are now nearing completion and may provide the legal framework for the proposed tariffs. These latest comments are part of a renewed wave of protectionist trade policy aimed at reducing US dependence on key imported goods, especially from strategic rivals. Trump has already imposed 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium and introduced targeted levies on vehicles and auto parts. India is also under threat of higher duties, with Trump citing New Delhis continued purchases of Russian oil as justification for upcoming measures 'I expect to raise the US tariff on Indian imports very substantially over the next 24 hours' While a general 10% tariff on nearly all US trading partners was enacted in April, Mr Trumps strategy has increasingly involved a sector specific approach, targeting goods that Washington deems sensitive to national security. The pharmaceutical and semiconductor industries critical to both public health and technology infrastructure now appear to be at the center of this escalating trade agenda, raising concerns among global suppliers, including Irish manufacturers with significant exports to the US |

Trumps HUGE Tariffs on Brazil Are More About Political Retaliation Than Trade BBC 19 AUG 2025 https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standar...d32ebd3327.jpg Trump and Brazilian then President Bolsonaro at Mar a Lago in 2020 Brazil thought it had gotten off lightly on the Trump tariff front. In April, Donald Trump announced that Brazilian goods imported to the US would face tariffs of 10% the lowest base rate applied to most countries. Now, as the 90 day pause on those and other targeted US tariffs is set to expire, Trump has raised Brazils rate to a WHOOPING 50% potentially launching a trade war with Latin Americas biggest economy, which sells large amounts of beef, coffee, steel and other products to the United States. The announcement means Brazil will face one of the highest US tariff rates in the world, at least so far. But this new policy isnt even really about trade. Earlier this month, Trump claimed the US runs a trade deficit with Brazil. In fact, it runs a multimillion dollar surplus, meaning the United States sells more to Brazil than it buys. This new tariff rate isnt about levelling a trade playing field. Its political, and part of a growing feud between the US and Brazil. Trump has framed these tariffs as retaliation over the prosecution of his ally, right wing former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is facing trial over an alleged coup attempt after losing the 2022 presidential election, when his supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia. The case includes claims of a plot to kill President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who won the race. Bolsonaro denies the charges and Trump has slammed them as a witch-hunt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcImm4JK2V4 Americas Coffee Addiction Meets Trump Trade Tariffs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw8oyKxP4y4 |
