Wilson the then US president called for Moscow obtaining for her an unhampered and unembarrassed opportunity for the independent determination of her own political development and national policy, and assure her of a sincere welcome into the society of free nations under institutions of her own choosing
For generations, academics and diplomats have argued whether this meant welcoming Russia into the post-war world as a nation but not as an empire.
The speech delivered by Wilson on Jan 8 1918 to Congress is widely considered Americas first foray into establishing and policing an international rules-based order.
Now Donald Trump appears to have reached a fork in the road as he attempts once again to put Washington at the centre of ending the largest land war for generations.
Will he go down in the annals of history, like Wilson, and win a Nobel Peace Prize? Or will Mr Trump instead undo the work of his predecessor and usher in a new Russian empire under the stewardship of Vladimir Putin?
As it stands, the latter appears the most likely outcome of the 47th US presidents first major attempt to broker an end to the almost three-year-long war between Ukraine and Russia.
From the outside, Mr Trump is seemingly dancing to Putins merry tune, regurgitating Kremlin talking points and helping Moscow consume a fifth of its territorial neighbour.
Much like Wilson, the current commander-in-chief seems to want to hand Russia an unembarrassed opportunity on a plate.
Both Moscow and Washington are discussing Ukraines future, sovereignty and place in the world without inviting Kyiv to the table.
To make it worse, Mr Trump has started parroting Kremlin claims that Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraines elected president, is illegitimate and unloved by his people.
He also blames the Ukrainian and Nato for Russias decision to mount a full-scale invasion on Feb 24 2022, another suggestion directly from the Kremlins '''lines-to-take''' guidebook.
And then there are fears that Mr Trump is willing to redraw and reduce the Western military alliances presence in Eastern Europe as part of his grand plan to end the fighting in Ukraine, which was a key demand by Putin to call off his planned invasion in Dec 2021.
These are hardly the actions of a man who yearns to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, WHICH WILL NEVER HAPPEN..like Wilson was for his efforts to stabilise the world order after the First World War.

God save the king..... Drunk on power, Donald Trump spent Saturday afternoon before adoring fans, boasting of his victories, taunting his enemies and casting himself as Americas absolute monarch, supreme leader and divine emperor rolled into one.
Trumps appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the National Harbor in Maryland began with country singer Lee Greenwoods God Bless the USA and raucous cheers in a crowded ballroom that included January 6 insurrectionists.
Seventy five minutes later, it concluded with the US president standing between two stars and stripes flags, pumping his fists and swaying to the Village Peoples anthem YMCA.
What emerged in between was a man who has never felt so sure of himself, so contemptuous of his foes and so convinced of his righteous mission to make America great again, even if it means breaking china, cracking skulls and leaving TOTAL global destruction in his wake.
As the title of Michael Wolffs new book puts it, last November?s election was All or Nothing. Defeat meant ruin, disgrace and prison. Victory meant what Trumps cheerleaders like to call the greatest comeback in political history. It also meant vengeance against his perceived tormentors in the justice department, Democratic party and media. As the martyr of Mar a Lago put it at CPAC two years ago: '''I am your retribution.'''
The message he took from that win over Kamala Harris was that he had broken his opponents, broken the checks and balances and broken reality itself. He was invincible.

This was the 15th time Trump has addressed CPAC, the biggest annual gathering of conservative activists. When he was out of power, his freewheeling speeches could be dismissed as the ravings or weavings of a MADMAN. Even during his first term, his extremist rhetoric came with some expectation that the democratic guardrails would hold.
But as America and the world have discovered during his first month back in the White House, Trump is unbound, unhinged and looking for blood. He took the stage at CPAC brimming with confidence and basking in chants of: '''USA USA'''

The president even bragged about pardoning hundreds convicted of crimes in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, describing them as '''political prisoners''' and '''J6 hostages'''. Some of them were in the room, chanting J6 J6 and shouting Thank you!. They have gone from prison cells to being CPACs newest celebrities.
Trump also boasted about killing diversity, equity and inclusion programmes, denying the identity of transgender people, yanking the US out of the Paris climate agreement and sending undocumented immigrants (monsters) to Guant?namo Bay. He hailed Elon Musks evisceration of the federal government, including the international aid agency USAid.
Each time, the crowd cheered.
Up until then, CPAC had felt toned down this year, with few if any chants of Lock her up! or T-shirts portraying Joe Biden as Satan. After all, Republicans won and there is no obvious Democratic leader to target. Still, that did not prevent Trump unleashing the usual insults and lies at his opponents.
Is their no-one that can STOP this DEMON before he causes any more CHAOS....

Donald Trump attacked business leaders who are critical of his tariffs, which is a large portion of business leaders, as bad at business.
And he declared himself the greatest friend of capitalism.
But that led to some quick reminders about his own decidedly mixed background as a businessman, including MANY bankruptcies for most of his companies.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social website:

Trumps on again, off again tariffs and other trade war policies have caused stocks to plunge, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average losing nearly 5,000 points since he took office.
Theres also been a dramatic sell off of the U.S. dollar.
Some have predicted a recession or WORSE as a result of Trumps policies.
Critics were quick to point out all that and more, including Trumps own track record in business:

Donald Trump admitted he was enjoying his second presidency more than his first during a lengthy, sit down interview.
The president agreed to an interview with The Atlantic, whose editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg was inadvertently involved in a war planning group chat that has plunged the administration into scandal. But correspondents Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer found him eager to strike a bargain with them.
As ever, Trump was on the hunt for a deal, they wrote. If he liked the story we wrote, he said, he might even speak with us again.
Tell the people at The Atlantic, if they'd write good stories and truthful stories, the magazine would be hot, he said, according to the reporters.
The correspondents had been hearing for weeks, both inside and outside the White House, that Trump was having more fun this time around.
Trump agreed with that assessment, but with an ominous tone.
Im having a lot of fun, considering what I do, Trump said in a phone call. You know, what I do is such serious stuff.
The first time, I had two things to do run the country and survive, he added later. I had all these crooked guys, and the second time, I run the country and now the world.
The reporters asked Trump about a rumor they'd heard about him tasking the Justice Department to examine whether he could legally run for a third term, which he denied but left open as a possibility.

The Trump Organizations international business dealings came under scrutiny in a New York Times report released Monday that claimed the presidents family members are raking in a fortune in deals across the world.

Just in the past 10 days, Donald Trump Jr. made stops in Hungary, Romania, Serbia, and Bulgaria, the newspaper wrote.
At the same time, Eric Trump was visiting Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and other Middle East spots promoting the familys real estate company and crypto plans.
It is a rush to cash in that involves billions of dollars with few precedents in American history, the Times added.
Theres nothing like it, Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley told the Times about the potential conflicts of interest posed by the trips.
Both Trump sons are involved in several family business ventures.
Eric runs the Trump Organization, the familys real estate business. He also serves on the board of a holding company that oversees the familys crypto firm, World Liberty Financial.
Donald Trump Jr. is also an executive at the Trump Organization and started a Bitcoin mining operation, American Bitcoin, with his brother.
More recently, Trump Jrs business partners are rolling out a club called Executive Branch.
The private membership club costs $500,000 a person and is slated to open this summer in Georgetown.
The White House said there are no ethics issues involving the president because Mr. Trumps sons run the businesses. The presidents assets are in a trust managed by his children, Anna Kelly, a White House spokeswoman, said. There are no conflicts of interest.

The Trump familys cryptocurrency business just got a $2 BIL investment from a firm backed by the United Arab Emirates government. The deal is rife with conflicts of interest.
Zach Witkoff son of Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and founder of the Trump familys crypto firm, World Liberty Financial announced the deal at a conference in Dubai on Thursday. He was accompanied by Eric Trump, who runs his familys business.
The Emirati firm, MGX, will be using World Liberty Financials so called stablecoin, USD1, to make a deal with Binance, the worlds largest crypto exchange.
We thank MGX and Binance for their trust in us, Witkoff said. It?s only the beginning.
This is a massive donation from a foreign government to the Trump family that will ultimately go toward a crypto exchange that has been monitored by the U.S. government for two years for money laundering. Binances billionaire founder, Changpeng Zhao, has not so coincidentally been pushing for a Trump pardon after he pleaded guilty in 2023 to violating anti money laundering laws.
With this deal, the Trump family will be enriched beyond most peoples comprehension, and they have the UAE government to thank for it. One can predict that Trump is likely to treat the country very favourably from here on out, again demonstrating that his power does have a price.
Trump changed his tune on cryptocurrency and used it to raise millions of dollars for his last campaign. His firm has been incredibly lucrative since, and as Witkoff said, it?s only the beginning.
This current venture is an instance of Trump further thumbing his nose at our flimsy conflict of interest laws and selling his influence to the highest bidder.
