S. Africa Court Orders End to Police Blockade of Illegal Miners TRAPPED In Gold Mine
South African authorities would not help illegal workers inside closed mine MailOnline 17 NOV 2024 ![]() ![]() The miners in the mineshaft in Stilfontein are believed to be suffering from a lack of food, water and other basic necessities after police closed off the entrances used to transport their supplies underground. It is part of the polices Vala Umgodi, or Close The Hole, operation, which includes cutting off miners? supplies to force them to return to the surface and be arrested. In the last few weeks, more than 1,000 miners have surfaced at various mines in North West province, with many reported to be weak, hungry and sick after going for weeks without basic supplies. A South African court on Saturday ordered an end to the police blockade of a former gold mine, where hundreds, possibly thousands, of illegal miners are thought to be underground. Police and ambulances have been at the site, in Stilfontein, about 140 kilometres (90 miles) southwest of Johannesburg, for several days. Police called in experts on Saturday to assess the safety of the mine shafts to help decide if officers could carry out a forced evacuation, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe told reporters. But the court order effectively rules out that option. The Pretoria court order said: "The mine shaft in Stilfontein... shall be unblocked and may not be blocked by any person or institution whether government or private. "Any miners trapped in the mine shaft shall be permitted to exit; no non-emergency personnel may enter the mine shaft," the judge added. Earlier this week, a local claimed to have been told there were around 4,000 miners underground. Police, speaking earlier this week, said the figure was probably in the hundreds, but the illegal miners faced arrest if they came to the surface. On Thursday, a body was brought out of the mine. The police operation had also cut off supplies of food and water to the underground miners. ![]() ![]() ![]() llegal mining remains common in South Africas old gold-mining areas, with miners going into closed shafts to dig for any possible remaining deposits. The illegal miners are often from neighbouring countries and police say the illegal operations involve larger syndicates that employ the miners. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPDpIeNoc_c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3VpwMN8cB4 |

South African Rescuers Pull 36 Corpses, 82 Survivors From Illegal Gold Mine
Gruesome footage of dead bodies emerged from illegal miners trapped underground in Stilfontein, South Africa Reuters 14 JAN 2025 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() South African rescuers have pulled out 36 dead bodies and 82 survivors from a gold mine deep underground in two days of operations POVERTY... Police said on Tuesday the survivors would all face illegal mining and immigration charges. Police began laying siege to the mine in August and cut off food and water supplies in an attempt to force the miners to the surface so they could be arrested as part of a crackdown on illegal mining. A Reuters team at the site saw rescuers carrying one man on a stretcher, while a group of other men, one of them emaciated, sat on the ground surrounded by uniformed police officers and paramedics. Footage issued by a miners' rights group on Monday had shown dozens of corpses and skeletal survivors inside the mine, which is located about 150 km (93 miles) from Johannesburg in the town of Stilfontein. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We7OV7ogvsQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eetvtouW3Is . |
