Terrifying; 9 Turkish Miners Buried ALIVE in Cyanide-Laced Landslide
Missing Turkish Miners Swallowed by Cyanide-Laced Landslide
Terrifying moment massive cyanide-laced landslide swallows up gold mine and buries nine workers alive triggering desperate rescue mission MailOnline 16 FEB 2024 This is the terrifying moment a huge cyanide-laced landslide buried one of the world's largest gold mines, trapping nine workers inside. The disaster happened yesterday at 2:30pm local time at Copler Mine in the Turkish town of Llic in the country's mountainous Erzincan province. According to local officials, up to twelve people are missing and 400 search and rescue personnel are at the scene, desperately trying to uncover the missing from under the ground. Experts and local officials said the search was complicated by the presence of cyanide - a highly toxic chemical compound used to extract gold from ore - in the ground. "Cyanide soil collapsed" at the site, Independent Mining Labor Union representative Basaran Aksu told Turkish media. In shocking footage, the landslide can be seen falling down the hillside repeatedly throughout the entire two-minute clip, covering everything in its path. It was filmed by a bulldozer driver from the top of a nearby hill, who watching on in horror as the tsunami of earth floods through a valley below. The cause of the slide was not immediately clear. Anagold Mining, which owns the mine and employs 667 staff, released a statement saying: '(The) most important priority in this difficult process is the health and safety of our employees and contractors. 'This is a painful situation. 'Immediately after the incident, we immediately contacted our employees in the region, put our emergency plan into action and informed the relevant public institutions and organizations.' An investigation into the disaster has already been launched with the Turkish Justice Minister, Yilmaz Tunc, saying: 'I wish our citizens from Erzincan recover soon and hope that our miner brothers who are trapped under the rubble will be rescued safely.' Regional governor Hamza Aydogdu said: 'There are people buried underground, the number is not clear. Our search and rescue efforts have started.' |
