China and Russia Declare No Limits to Their Plan to Rival US Power

China and Russia have proclaimed a deep strategic partnership to balance the global influence of the United States.

China’s President Xi Jingping welcomed President Putin to Beijing on the opening day of the Winter Olympics.

In a joint statement, the two countries said that friendship between their countries had no limits. They announced plans to collaborate in many areas including space, climate change, artificial intelligence and control of the internet.

It’s the clearest statement so far of Russia and China’s resolve to work together to build a new international order to rival the United States, based on their own interpretations of human rights and democracy.

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's rumoured plan for a trip to Taiwan has infuriated China and left the White House with a serious geopolitical headache. How big a problem is this?

Second in line to the presidency, Mrs Pelosi would be the highest ranking US politician to travel to the island since 1997.

This rankles China, which sees self-ruled Taiwan as a breakaway province that must become a part of the country. Beijing has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve this.

Even the Biden administration has reportedly tried to dissuade the California Democrat from going.

Last week, President Joe Biden told reporters "the military thinks it's not a good idea", but his White House has called Chinese rhetoric against any such trip "clearly unhelpful and not necessary".

The state department says Mrs Pelosi has not announced any travel and the US approach to Taiwan remains unchanged.

While the US maintains what is calls a "robust, unofficial relationship" with Taiwan, it has formal diplomatic ties with China, and not Taiwan.

Ms Pelosi's trip, if it were to happen, also comes amid increased tensions between Washington and Beijing - and ahead of a much anticipated phone call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Why Would Pelosi Want to Visit Taiwan?

There is strong bipartisan support for Taiwan among the American public and in the US Congress.

And over a congressional career spanning 35 years, Speaker Pelosi has been a vocal critic of China.

She has denounced its human rights record, met with pro-democracy dissidents, and also visited Tiananmen Square to commemorate victims of the 1989 massacre.

Mrs Pelosi's original plan was to visit Taiwan in April, but it was postponed after she tested positive for Covid-19.

She has declined to discuss details of the trip, but said last week that it was "important for us to show support for Taiwan".

Why Does China Oppose The Visit?

Beijing views Taiwan as its territory, and has repeatedly raised the spectre of annexing it by force if necessary.

Chinese officials have expressed anger over what they view as growing diplomatic engagement between Taipei and Washington. This includes a surprise visit to the island by six US lawmakers in April.

On Monday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian warned his country would take "firm and resolute measures" if Mrs Pelosi went ahead with her visit.

"And the US will be responsible for all of the serious consequences," he said.

A spokesman of the Chinese ministry of defence seemed to suggest there could even be a military response.

"If the US side insists on going ahead, the Chinese military will never sit idle and will take strong measures to thwart any external interference and separatist attempts for 'Taiwan independence'," Colonel Tan Kefei told China Daily.

The leaders discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with both countries agreeing the threat or use of nuclear weapons was “totally unacceptable.”

Mr Biden said both the US and China are committed to keeping peace with Taiwan, adding he "absolutely" believed there would not be a new Cold War with China.

The pair met in Bali, Indonesia, ahead of the G20 leaders' summit, which starts on Tuesday.

Around the time that the F.B.I. was examining the equipment recovered from the Chinese spy balloon shot down off the South Carolina coast in February, American intelligence agencies and Microsoft detected what they feared was a more worrisome intruder: mysterious computer code appearing in telecommunications systems in Guam and elsewhere in the United States.

The code, which Microsoft said was installed by a Chinese government hacking group, raised alarms because Guam, with its Pacific ports and vast American air base, would be a centerpiece of any American military response to an invasion or blockade of Taiwan.

The operation was conducted with great stealth, sometimes flowing through home routers and other common internet-connected consumer devices, to make the intrusion harder to track.

The code is called a “web shell,” in this case a malicious script that enables remote access to a server. Home routers are particularly vulnerable, especially older models that have not had updated software and protections.

Unlike the balloon that fascinated Americans as it performed pirouettes over sensitive nuclear sites, the computer code could not be shot down on live television. So instead, Microsoft on Wednesday published details of the code that would make it possible for corporate users, manufacturers and others to detect and remove it.

In a coordinated release, the National Security Agency — along with other domestic agencies and counterparts in Australia, Britain, New Zealand and Canada — published a 24-page advisory that referred to Microsoft’s finding and offered broader warnings about a “recently discovered cluster of activity” from China.

Microsoft called the hacking group “Volt Typhoon” and said that it was part of a state-sponsored Chinese effort aimed at not only critical infrastructure such as communications, electric and gas utilities, but also maritime operations and transportation.

The intrusions appeared, for now, to be an espionage campaign. But the Chinese could use the code, which is designed to pierce firewalls, to enable destructive attacks, if they choose.

So far, Microsoft says, there is no evidence that the Chinese group has used the access for any offensive attacks. Unlike Russian groups, the Chinese intelligence and military hackers usually prioritize espionage.

American Citizens to be Evacuated From Taiwan as Tensions Grow With China

The US government is reported to be currently organising the evacuation of Americans living in Taiwan.

According to a senior US intelligence person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to disclose the strategy, reported this evacuation planning has been ongoing for at least six months and has significantly increased over the last few months.

The official explained to the US outlet that the preparations have been prompted by a heightened level of tension, citing factors such as the visible build-up of forces and China's alignment with Russia concerning the situation in Ukraine.

A source with knowledge of the situation told them that the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was a major factor in the planning for the evacuation.

The source claimed that Ukraine "Ukraine drove a relook at what the plans were".

The U.S. government has not released any announcements to the public, although Lt. Col. Martin Meiners is reported to have said when approached, "We do not see a conflict in the Taiwan Strait as imminent or inevitable."

Tensions heightened last night between Taiwan and China after the man the Chinese have branded a dangerous separatist was elected Taiwan's new president.

Lai Ching-te, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which wants to guide Taiwan away from Beijing's influence, had told voters before the polls opened that they faced a choice between democracy and totalitarianism.

'The whole world is watching,' he said in a rallying cry.

Later, in his victory speech, the former doctor said the island's voters had shown the world 'how much we cherish democracy'.

Beijings preferred candidate was Hou Yu-ih, from the opposition Kuomintang party, which wants closer ties to China.

Taiwans' 23 million people inhabit one of the world's most tense flashpoint areas.

There were fears last night that the election result will further raise tensions between the US and China as they compete for influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Before the election, Beijing's defence ministry said the People's Liberation Army was 'on high alert at all times' and it would 'smash' any move towards independence.

Mr Lai said in his victory speech that he is 'determined to safeguard Taiwan from continuing threat and intimidation from China'.

But he added that his government will 'use dialogue to replace confrontation'.

This is the first time in the islands' 28-year democratic history that a party has won the presidency in three successive elections – an endorsement of DPP policies.

Chinas' President has reportedly “purged” his own military, bringing in loyal officials who are willing to go to war.

Xi Jinping, often branded a dictator for the stranglehold he has over Chinese politics, is reportedly “trying to gain control of the military” analyst Gordon Chang told Business Insider.

Raising fears of a possible war around the corner, Jinping added this was because “he is thinking that he needs officers who are prepared to actually fight”.

He added: "There is a sense that many of Chinas general officers don't want to fight. And so we really have a force led by an officer corps that is ambivalent about going to war." This comes amid growing tensions between China and other powers over a number of flashpoints including the country’s designs towards Taiwan.

The senior fellow at the Gatestone Institute and author of ‘China Is Going to War’ pointed to the case of Air Force General Lio Yazhou.

Yazhou had cautioned against invading Taiwan and later received a suspended death sentence. This, Chang said, was evidence of Xi removing officers who were reluctant to fight. Issues arise because China claims Taiwan, which rules itself, as its own territory. And fears have grown in recent years that Xi may be plotting an invasion of the island.

This comes about through increasingly hostile rhetoric emerging from China and simulated blockades of the island. Alongside that, Beijing has never ruled out the use of force to take back the island and Xi said unification is inevitable.

But that isn’t Chinas only international dispute. China has various ongoing rows with India, at various points along their shared border. One such flashpoint is Aksai Chin, which India claims but China administers. This is thanks, in part, to a road built into the region in the 1950s by China - a road the Indians had no idea was being built.

Similarly, China has a number of clashes with other east Asian nations, claiming the ownership of a number of islands. This includes the Paracel Islands which Vietnam also claims, but China once more administers.

It comes after China arrested a consultant firm boss they accused of spying for MI6. The country’s Ministry of National Security has accused the British Secret Intelligence Service of using a consulting firm official, named locally as Huang Moumou, to gather intelligence.

Chinese media reported Moumou, acted on instructions from MI6 to enter the country and gather intelligence related to China. This reportedly included identifying individuals who may be susceptible to approaching. Alongside that, it was alleged that Moumou was provided with intelligence training and equipment. It was said Huang provided the UK with a number of state secrets and intelligence.

The Chinese ministry of state security posted on social media about the arrest, claiming the man had been cooperating with the UK since 2015. But no further information was provided on the nature of the intelligence that was gathered, nor when the alleged spy was detained or where they were being held.

Xi Jinping, often branded a dictator for the stranglehold he has over Chinese politics, is reportedly “trying to gain control of the military” analyst Gordon Chang told Business Insider. Raising fears of a possible war around the corner, Jinping added this was because “he is thinking that he needs officers who are prepared to actually fight”. He added: "There is a sense that many of Chinas general officers don't want to fight. And so we really have a force led by an officer corps that is ambivalent about going to war." This comes amid growing tensions between China and other powers over a number of flashpoints including the country’s designs towards Taiwan. The senior fellow at the Gatestone Institute and author of ‘China Is Going to War’ pointed to the case of Air Force General Lio Yazhou. Yazhou had cautioned against invading Taiwan and later received a suspended death sentence. This, Chang said, was evidence of Xi removing officers who were reluctant to fight. Issues arise because China claims Taiwan, which rules itself, as its own territory. And fears have grown in recent years that Xi may be plotting an invasion of the island. This comes about through increasingly hostile rhetoric emerging from China and simulated blockades of the island. Alongside that, Beijing has never ruled out the use of force to take back the island and Xi said unification is inevitable. But that isn’t Chinas only international dispute. China has various ongoing rows with India, at various points along their shared border. One such flashpoint is Aksai Chin, which India claims but China administers. This is thanks, in part, to a road built into the region in the 1950s by China - a road the Indians had no idea was being built. Similarly, China has a number of clashes with other east Asian nations, claiming the ownership of a number of islands. This includes the Paracel Islands which Vietnam also claims, but China once more administers. It comes after China arrested a consultant firm boss they accused of spying for MI6. The country’s Ministry of National Security has accused the British Secret Intelligence Service of using a consulting firm official, named locally as Huang Moumou, to gather intelligence. Chinese media reported Moumou, acted on instructions from MI6 to enter the country and gather intelligence related to China. This reportedly included identifying individuals who may be susceptible to approaching. Alongside that, it was alleged that Moumou was provided with intelligence training and equipment. It was said Huang provided the UK with a number of state secrets and intelligence. The Chinese ministry of state security posted on social media about the arrest, claiming the man had been cooperating with the UK since 2015. But no further information was provided on the nature of the intelligence that was gathered, nor when the alleged spy was detained or where they were being held.
