Police arrested suspected shooter James Holmes, a 24-year-old medical student in the car park outside the theatre. Picture: AP THE full horror of the Colorado cinema shooting is becoming clearer, with confirmation that children are among 12 people slaughtered by a lone gunman.

Authorities have also confirmed that dozens were wounded in the shooting at a cinema at a shopping mall in Aurora, Colorado, a suburb of Denver.
The chaos erupted about 12.30am local time when a masked gunman opened fire as people watched the third instalment of Christopher Nolan's Batman series.
The gunman stood at the front of one of the Century 16 theatres at the Aurora Mall as the movie was playing, Aurora police chief Dan Oates said.

Local television stations identified the suspect as James Holmes, 24, who is thought to be a medical student from California. A spokeswoman for the San Diego Police Department, Andra Brown, said his family was shocked by the incident and cooperating with law enforcement.

"Their hearts go out to those involved or touched by this," she said, adding that the family's San Diego home had been put under police protection.

One of the victims has been identified as Jessica Ghawi, an aspiring sportswriter who had escaped a shooting spree at a Toronto mall just weeks earlier.

The victim's brother, Jordan Ghawi, wrote a blog post describing his learning the news.

"At approximately 0215 CST, I received an hysterical, and almost unintelligible, phone call from my mother stating that my sister, Jessica Ghawi, had been shot while attending the midnight showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises' in Denver, CO," he said.

"I was able to contact the man that was with my sister, mutual friend Brent Lowak, who stated that they were in the theater when an incendiary device was fired into the crowd and that shots rang out immediately afterwards," he added.

The US military has confirmed that some members of the military were also killed in the shooting spree, but were unable to confirm numbers.

Police said a gas mask, rifle, handgun at least one additional weapon were found at the theatre.

The gunman apparently used teargas during the incident and also shot a baby. He is thought to have been wearing armour and a gas mask - with some reports suggesting he was dressed as Batman villain Bane from the movie.

"Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire," Mr Oates said at a news conference.

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding the 911 switchboard, officials said.

According to Denver reporter Justin Joseph of KDVR, the man stood up brandishing a gun as soon as Batman appeared on screen. Moviegoers apparently initially thought it was part of the film.

"As people ran this gunman, or gunmen, opened fire hitting people," British newspaper The Telegraph quotes him as saying.

"Police sources have told us there are 10 bodies inside the cinema, most of them children or teenagers, and one baby.


"A baby was shot at point blank range, the family were gathered around screaming".

"There were police on scene when it happened and one of the gunmen was captured quickly."

Officers found the gunman near a car behind the theatre.

"A gas mask, rifle, handgun at least one additional weapon (were) found inside" he said.

Police said Holmes had booby-trapped his apartment with a "very sophisticated" device. Denver TV networks and newspapers quoted the chief of police in the town of Aurora as saying Holmes' apartment was rigged with "inflammable or explosive items."

Live television images from outside the suspect's apartment showed police perched on a crane peering into a third-floor window of the building.

"We could be here for days," Aurora police chief Dan Oates told the Denver Post.

According to the newspaper, residents of the apartment complex, which is reserved for students, faculty and staff of the medical school at the University of Colorado, and nearby buildings have been evacuated.

One witness, Hayden Miller, told Denver's 9News he was in an adjoining cinema when he heard "10-20 shots" and "small explosions".

"We heard people screaming," Mr Miller said.

He said a voice then came over the PA system and "told us to get out".

"Everyone was running, screaming," he said.

A witness, Bejamin Fernandez, 30, told The Denver Post he was watching the movie when he heard a series of explosions. He said that people ran from the theatre and there were gunshots as police shouted 'get down!"

He says he saw people falling, including one young girl.

It was the worst mass shooting in the US since the 2007 massacre on the Virginia Tech campus.

US President Barack Obama cut short a re-election campaign trip to Florida to deal with the aftermath of the shooting, which he called "senseless" and "evil".

"Such violence, such evil, is senseless. But while we will never know fully what causes somebody to take the life of another, we do know what makes life worth living," Mr Obama said

Aurora, a suburb of Denver, is not far from Littleton, scene of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 that claimed 13 lives.

Absolutely incredible and heart breaking. Once again the lax gun laws in the US, have caused mass murder.
Now we may have the usual copycats following suit.

24 year old James Holmes went into the theatre through an emergency back door.

"He looked like someone from SWAT" .
He was wearing a tactical vest, helmut, and tactical leggings

Holmes was just about to withdraw from the University of Colorado,,, he is a highly intelligent man and was studying Neuro Science

Gunman told cops he had bombs. Some wiring has been found but investigations are continuing.

Suspect's informed Police his apartment had been booby trapped, Police had to enter through an upstairs window.

My sympathies and thoughts go out to all the poor family and friends of the victims.
Such a cruel terrible act.

Police may send in robots to detonate.... They are awaiting the arrival of Bomb Disposal Experts.

They do not believe that Holmes was connected to any known terrorist organisation, but investigations are continuing, as they have discovered other contacts/actions that Holmes has taken in recent weeks...

He had, however, started "blasting" loud music in his apartment on the day of the murders. He has also dyed his hair red in preparation...
