Attorney General Eric Holder said the committee had made "unsubstantiated allegations" in the case

BBC News 20 June 2012

US House of Representatives committee has voted along party lines to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. Mr Holder refused to hand over papers relating to a botched sting operation.
The move comes after President Barack Obama used his executive privilege to withhold documents sought by the House Oversight Committee.
Operation Fast and Furious saw US agents lose hundreds of illegal guns let into Mexico to trace arms dealers.
US border agent Brian Terry was killed in December 2010 in a shootout with illegal immigrants with a weapon linked to Fast and Furious.
The congressional investigation was opened after two guns retrieved at the scene were found to be among 2,000 weapons authorities were supposed to be tracking.

'Extraordinary, unnecessary'?
Republican leaders in the House of Representatives have said they will schedule a full vote next week on the issue.

Shortly after the committee vote, House Speaker John Boehner tweeted an ultimatum, saying a full House vote would be held unless Mr Holder co-operated with the inquiry.
But Mr Holder said claimed the justice department had not been co-operative were "untrue".
Committee chairman Representative Darrell Issa has "chosen to use his authority to take an extraordinary, unprecedented and entirely unnecessary action, intended to provoke an avoidable conflict between Congress and the Executive Branch," Mr Holder said.
"This divisive action does not help us fix the problems that led to this operation or previous ones and it does nothing to make any of our law enforcement agents safer," he said, calling it "an election-year tactic".
The Department of Justice says it has denied access to the files because they contain information that could affect ongoing criminal investigations.
Its officials say they have already sent more than 7,000 documents to the Republican-led House Oversight Committee.

Congressman Darrell Issa said the President's use of the executive privilege was "untimely"

Wednesday's use of executive privilege for withholding documents is the first time Mr Obama has invoked the power. Former Presidents George W Bush and Bill Clinton used the privilege six and 14 times respectively during their eight-year terms.
On Tuesday, Mr Holder met Mr Issa, but they did not agree on a path forward.
Mr Holder said lawmakers had turned down his offer to give them the documents, along with a briefing on the operation, in exchange for assurances that the panel would drop contempt proceedings.
Officials charged with contempt of Congress could potentially be fined or jailed - but correspondents say this standoff is unlikely to provoke such an outcome.
Historically, Congress and the White House have negotiated agreements to avoid a court battle that would limit either Congress' subpoena power or executive privilege itself.

In a separate development on Tuesday, the family of an Immigartion and Customs Enforcement agent killed in Mexico has filed a $25m wrongful death lawsuit against several US officials, including Mr Holder.
Jaime Zapata's family say the weapons that killed him were brought into Mexico because of US investigations into gun trafficking.

Re: US Attorney General Contempt Charge

I usually don't bring political topics here. However I do keep up with them and this is the pot calling the kettle black, as mentioned in this article that both presidents prior have used executive privilege to hide what was uncomfortable to be known public. You can just about bet the Obama was in this up to his furry little ears. Most likely that is what is being hid.

What is different between other presidents usage of executive privilege to hide stuff and this Fast and Furious documents, is that no one got killed in any of the other topics hidden. That it comes up just prior to an election is not coincidence.

Bush had his own program very similar to Fast and Furious which was what this program was based on. Of course you don't hear any of that in this; only Holder and Obama. That tells you right away, it's political head hunting.

Now I have my own problems with the whole operation. Hiding the documents is only part of the problem. First off, you have the US doing gun running operations into a foreign and sovereign nation. One beset with drug executions made possible by these guns. Maybe we should just have went ahead first and declared war on Mexico? Then you have the diplomatic embarrassment of Mexico demanding when they were going to get around to telling them that the US was arming it's opponents, much the same as if Iran or some other country had come in and armed them. Here the US is beating the drum on terrorism and if waging a war on the civilian populace, the law enforcement, and politicians isn't terrorism, I need a new daffynition.

Then you have a family of a US Customs agent wanting to know why their son/father was killed with guns the US purposely allowed to go over the border. To top it all off with playing cute by hiding the info while trying to protect Holder, who has a long history of involvement with this style of gun running going back to the Bush days, is just the icing on the cake.

This is sure to beat the ant hill and watch how the scurrying happens on Washington Hill. The shame of it all, is that a government agent doing his job, died because of this little operation and no one is wanting to come clean about it all. It's an embarrassment all the way around.

*edit* I thought these words in an article were interesting enough on this topic to come back and edit my response.

Quote:

President Bill Clinton used executive privilege 14 times and President George W. Bush invoked it six times, officials said, including in cases that involved documents similar to those sought in the Fast and Furious congressional inquiry.

Your words are so very true, espec the point of so many, not only Americans, but Brits and some from other allied nations being killed by arms supplied by the US to further their own ends.
