Daily Mirror 1 JAN 2022

Joanna Lumley finally becomes a Dame - decades after her haughty TV character Patsy probably thought she deserved it.

Emma Raducanu, 19, gets an MBE after becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade

Covid experts, local heroes, sports and showbiz stars are all awarded gongs tonight in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

Knighthoods go to medical officers Chris Whitty and Jonathan Van-Tam while Dr Jenny Harries is made a Dame.

Tony Blair will finally become a Sir more than 15 years after his predecessor Sir John Major - with the highest possible honour.....

Mel B, Kate Garraway, Daniel Craig, Katie Piper and soap stars June Brown and Bill Roache all get gongs.

Joanna Lumley has been given a Damehood

And a string of honours go to sports stars too including Emma Raducanu, Adam Peaty, Tom Daley and Laura and Jason Kenny.

Some of the gongs will stir controversy, including a knighthood for billionaire Tory mega-donor David Harding.

Laura and Jason Kenny become the first couple to get a knighthood and damehood in the same list

But many more of the 1,278 people honoured today are community leaders or service people whose names aren’t in lights.

Boris Johnson said they “have inspired and entertained us and given so much to their communities”.

We run through the highlights of the 2022 New Year Honours

Covid Leaders

A knighthood is confirmed for England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty, who became a household name in the pandemic.

His counterparts in Wales, Frank Atherton, and in Scotland, Gregor Smith, also become Sirs.

Prof Whitty’s deputy Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, known for his colourful metaphors to explain complex graphs and figures at Downing Street press briefings, gets a knighthood.

Jonathan Van-Tam will be 'Sir JVT'

The Chief Medical Officer will be Professor Sir Chris Whitty

UK Health Security Agency boss Dr Jenny Harries becomes Dame Jenny.

England’s Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance’s current knighthood is upgraded.

NHS England’s Chief Commercial Officer Emily Lawson, who led the unprecedented coronavirus vaccination campaign, receives a damehood.

The boss of the body which gave the green light to deploying vaccinations, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency chief executive Dr June Raine, also becomes a dame.

Nobel Prize-winning geneticist Sir Paul Nurse is made a Companion of Honour - the highest honour - for his outstanding contribution to scientific research and understanding.

TV & Showbiz

Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley, 75, who played drunk blonde maneater Patsy Stone in the 1990s BBC1 comedy, becomes a dame.

As well as her acting roles, she was widely hailed for her campaigning for Gurkhas who retired before 1997 to be allowed to settle in the UK. Her damehood comes 27 years after she was awarded an OBE.

James Bond star Daniel Craig has been made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George - the same given to 007.

Mel B has been honoured for her work tackling domestic violence

Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown (Mel B) has been made an MBE for her work with domestic violence charity Women's Aid.

Kate Garraway has been made an MBE after documenting her husband Derek Draper's battle with coronavirus.

Loose Women star Katie Piper has been made an OBE - as have soap legends June Brown and Bill Roache .

Brown, 94, who played Albert Square gossip Dot Cotton in EastEnders from 1985 until 2020, is honoured for “services to drama and to charity”.

Coronation Street star Roache, 89, has played Ken Barlow since the show was first broadcast on December 9, 1960.

He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-serving TV star in a continuous role.

His fellow Corrie star Cherylee Houstin, 47, who plays Izzy Armstrong and uses a wheelchair, receives an MBE for services to drama and to people with disabilities.

Oscar-winner Vanessa Redgrave also becomes a dame. The 84-year-old has bagged numerous awards during a 63-year career on stage and screen, including an Academy Award for best supporting actress in the 1977 film, Julia.

Vanessa Redgrave, pictured in 1968, also becomes a dame

She was made a CBE in 1967 and reportedly turned down a damehood in 1999.

Songwriter Bernie Taupin, best known for his long-running and fruitful collaboration with Sir Elton John, has been made an OBE

Filmmaker John Boorman is made a knight while James Bond films producer Barbara Broccoli receives a CBE.

TV’s Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis is made a CBE.

Dancer and choreographer Ashley Banjo said he is "humbled and extremely proud" to have been made an MBE.

Sport and Games

Double Olympic gold medal swimmer Adam Peaty, 27, gets an OBE, as does diver Tom Daley, also 27, who won gold in Japan.

US Open tennis champion Emma Raducanu, 19, gets an MBE after becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977.

Cycling superstars Laura and Jason Kenny become the first husband and wife to receive a damehood and knighthood in the same Honours list.

Seven-time Olympic gold medallist Jason, 33, is Britain’s most successful Olympian, winning gold in the keirin at this summer’s Tokyo 2020 Games, which were delayed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Laura, 29, is both the most successful female cyclist, and the most successful British female athlete, in Olympic history.

Gold medal-winning middleweight boxer Lauren Price, 27, gets an MBE. The Welshwoman, who was raised by her grandparents Derek and Linda, spoke movingly about what it would mean to her grandad, who died last year. She told the Mirror: “He would have been the proudest grandfather ever, the proudest man in the Valleys.”

Wheelchair Paralympian Hannah ****roft, 29, gets an OBE - nine years after she became an MBE following the London Games. “To still be here 10 years down the line, still winning gold in the same event, still topping the podium - I don’t really think many athletes can say that,” she said.

Other Olympians and Paralympians being honoured include a CBE for cyclist Jody Cundy , OBE for sprinter and cyclist Kadeena Cox, and MBEs for diver Matty Lee and BMX racer Bethany Shriever .
Hannah ****roft has been honoured in the list

Gary Bennett, Sunderland AFC’s first black player and one of the first three patrons of the charity Show Racism the Red Card, receives an MBE. He said the battle was far from over.

“People ask, ‘What’s it like to suffer from racism?’ I try to tell them, especially if you’re in my colour skin, it’s something which you feel on a daily basis.

“It’s not always verbal, it can be visual.”

David Beckham has not been honoured this year despite reports to the contrary.

Games Workshop co-founder Ian Livingstone is made a knight for “services to the online gaming industry”.
Tory cronies including billionaire donor

Tory cronies are rewarded in the New Year Honours.

Billionaire hedge fund boss David Harding, 60, who has pumped more than £1.5million into the Conservative Party war chest since 2006, is knighted for “services to philanthropy”.

Tory MP Bill Wiggin also becomes a Sir

Lobbyist Simon Nayyar, with £10k of donations to the Conservative Party from 2016 recorded under his name, is also made an MBE. The former parliamentary candidate runs a London PR firm.

Conservative MP Bill Wiggin, who was first elected in 2001, receives a knighthood. He was a Government whip under David Cameron and backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Tory leadership race.

Following Mr Johnson’s victory, fawning North Herefordshire MP Mr Wiggin gushed: “I am delighted for Boris and wish him the very best for a successful premiership. I am excited for the future of our county and our country under this leader.”

Former Environment Minister Robert Goodwill is also knighted. He has been MP for Scarborough and Whitby, North Yorks, since 2005.
Other figures in Westminster and Whitehall

Until now ex-PM Tony Blair did not have a knighthood - unlike his predecessor Sir John Major.

But from today he is Sir Tony after being appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter - an ultra-exclusive group that can only ever have 24 living non-royal members.

Sir Tony, who held the keys to Number 10 between 1997 and 2007, will be appointed to the oldest and most senior British Order of Chivalry - knighting him with the highest possible ranking.

There is a knighthood for Trevor Phillips, the former human rights chief who presents Sky’s Sunday morning politics show.

Former Labour MP Sylvia Heal, 79, who represented Halesowen and Rowley Regis, West Mids, from 1997 to 2010, becomes a dame.

Her fellow ex-Labour MP John Battle, 70, who represented Leeds West from 1987 to 2010, becomes a sir. Labour peer Tommy McAvoy is made a knight too.

Lord Frank Field, who was MP for Birkenhead from 1979 to 2019, and was a Welfare Minister under Tony Blair, is made a Companion of Honour.

Lord Field, 79, who has spent a lifetime campaigning against poverty, revealed in October that he was terminally ill as he backed a law that would allow assisted dying.

Boys who helped charities are youngest recipients

Two boys who have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity during the coronavirus pandemic today become the youngest ever recipients of gongs from the Queen.

Tobias Weller, 11, who has cerebral palsy and autism, was nicknamed “Captain” after he was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore to start raising money during the first lockdown.

He has raised more than £150,000 for his school and The Children’s Hospital Charity, in his home city of Sheffield, by completing a series of challenges. He captured the country’s attention when he began his first marathon using a walker in March 2020, as the pandemic tightened its hold on our shores.

He finished 70 days later and, in June 2020, started a second one using a race runner.

He tackled an Ironman triathlon over a year, finishing in September.

Max Woosey, 12, of Braunton, Devon, has raised more than £640,000 for North Devon Hospice by sleeping in his tent

Max Woosey, 12, of Braunton, Devon, has raised more than £640,000 for North Devon Hospice by sleeping in his tent every night since March 29, 2020 - including in sub-zero temperatures.

He began his marathon sponsored sleepout for the hospice after his terminally ill next-door-neighbour Rick Abbott gave him the tent, to raise money for the hospice which had cared for him in his final weeks.

“They looked after our friend and enabled him to pass peacefully at home with those closest to him, which was his final wish,” Max said.

“My friend Rick gave me his tent before he died and made me promise to have an adventure so that’s what I’m doing.”

Both receive British Empire Medals.

Brave mum of Manchester Arena victim

The mother of one of the Manchester Arena victims has said she is "completely humbled" to be made an OBE.

Figen Murray , 60, has completed a master's degree in counter terrorism, campaigned for increased security measures and spoken to 14,000 schoolchildren about the dangers of radicalisation since her son Martyn Hett, 29, died in the attack after an Ariana Grande concert on May 22, 2017.

She said the news she was featured in the New Year Honours had come as a surprise.

She told the PA news agency: "I don't do any work to gain anything from it, I do it literally because I want to do it and because it is really important.”

Boxing coach tries to help next generation

A boxing coach who has dedicated his life to helping disadvantaged youths has said his aim is to "create champions outside the ring as much as inside".

Paul Johnston , 51, of Monkstown Boxing Club in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, is being made an MBE for his work as a coach and mentor to hundreds of young people over the years.

"I'm really just trying to support the young people at different stages of their lives... the big decisions about their education or about other things,” he said. "Really, school maybe just didn't provide that level of support that we could.”

85-year-old hospital porter

An 85-year-old health service porter, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year Honours, has said he has no intention of retiring.

Jimmy Chapman works at Lisburn Health Centre, where he takes care of patients, starting at 4am every morning day.

He told the PA news agency: "I take care of everybody - the young and the elderly and the in-betweens.

"I am here for 27 years. I started when I was 59. I am 85 now.

"I like working with the people in the health centre and I like the work I am carrying on and I like looking after disabled people, bringing them in and out in wheelchairs. I like to help people in distress."

Hospice pioneer with 40 years’ service

A pioneer of the hospice movement who has worked for charities and the voluntary sector for 40 years has been made an MBE.

Jane Bradshaw , chief executive of St Teresa's Hospice in Darlington, said she felt "humbled" after being named in the Queen's New Year Honours for her work.

She took on the role in 1997 and has brought in a range of services for patients and helped to raise millions of pounds.

Ms Bradshaw, from Yarm, Teesside, said: "I am truly humbled to be nominated by someone in the first place and absolutely delighted to receive this honour.

"I have been blessed over the years to work in a sector that makes a vital difference to people's lives, at a time when they need support the most, often in their darkest hours.”

Petition to Strip CROOK Tony Blair of Knighthood Surpasses 200,000 Signatures

Anna Maxwell Martin brands Tony Blair ‘a Gruesome Crook’ over Iraq War

“A knighthood for a war criminal, but not for a war hero.”

We are all still living in the shadow of Tony Blair

Daily Mirror 3 JAN 2022

....

A petition to strip CUR Blair of the knighthood given to him by the Queen in the New Year honours list has reached over 128,000 signatures.

Labour's longest-serving Prime Minister was appointed as a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior British Order of Chivalry.

It is an honour regularly bestowed on former premier and entirely within Her Majesty's gift - so not awarded on the advice of the Government.

But the move has led to a huge backlash, with scores pointing to his decision to take Britain to war in Iraq.

Angus Scott launched the petition on Change.org shortly after news broke.

He wrote: ' Tony Blair is to be knighted with the highest possible ranking in the new year honours list, Buckingham Palace has said.

"Sir Tony, who held the keys to No 10 between 1997 and 2007, will be appointed a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior British Order of Chivalry.

"Tony Blair caused irreparable damage to both the constitution of the United Kingdom and to the very fabric of the nation's society. He was personally responsible for causing the death of countless innocent, civilian lives and servicemen in various conflicts. For this alone he should be held accountable for war crimes.

"Tony Blair is the least deserving person of any public honour, particularly anything awarded by Her Majesty the Queen."

Frankie London, 53, was one of the first to sign the petition.

Mr London, of Southend, Essex, said: “A knighthood for that repugnant man Tony Blair, but still no knighthood for the last surviving Dambuster George 'Johnny' Johnson in his 100th year is a national shame.

“A knighthood for a war criminal, but not for a war hero.”...

Deborah Warford, another signatory, said: "Tony Blair should be prosecuted not knighted.

"Someone like this being honoured shows how corrupt and vile the system is."

Fergus Murray said: "As long as people like Blair get honoured, this whole system dishonours us."

Military mums who lost loved ones in Afghanistan and Iraq have also been angered by the decision.

Some threatened to return Elizabeth Crosses – an honour awarded to bereaved families – as a sign of their disgust.

Sir Tony has faced sustained criticism over the Iraq conflict.

A report by Sir John Chilcot in 2016 found that the former prime minister overplayed evidence about Saddam Hussein's arsenal and found he presented the case for war based on "flawed" intelligence about Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Sir Tony said at the time that he would "take the same decision".
Tony Blair: If you’re not vaccinated and eligible you’re an idiot

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has called for all former prime ministers to be knighted in the same Order, after Sir Tony waited 14 years.

All but one of the prime ministers before Sir Tony were appointed a few years after leaving office, with Sir John Major being the latest.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, however, it should be given to all ex-PMs including David Cameron because it is “one of the toughest jobs in the world”.

“Whatever people might think, it is one of the toughest jobs in the world and I think it is respectful and it is the right thing to do, whether it is to Tony Blair or to David Cameron. They should all be offered that knighthood when they finish as prime minister,” the Chorley MP said.

“I would say if you’ve been prime minister of this country, I do believe the country should recognise the service they’ve given,” Sir Lindsay added.

“It is not about politics, it is about the position they have held in this country: It’s about the position and it’s the respect that we show to those people who’ve led this country.

“And I think it’s a fitting tribute to the job they’ve carried out.”

Commenting after the news of Sir Tony's knighthood emerged, Labour leader, Keir Starmer said: "The last Labour government delivered enduring change from the national minimum wage to the peace process in Northern Ireland.

"My congratulations to Tony Blair on this recognition for his public service to our country."

Sir Tony, who left Downing Street more than 14 years ago, was one of three new appointments announced by the palace alongside Baroness Valerie Amos and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Appointments to the Garter are in the Queen’s gift and made without prime ministerial advice, and are usually announced on St George’s Day, April 23, but the monarch can do so at any time, and chose this year to coincide with the New Year’s Honours.

They are for life unless a Knight or Lady Companion offends against certain “points of reproach”.

On receiving the honour, Sir Tony said: “It is an immense honour to be appointed Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, and I am deeply grateful to Her Majesty the Queen.

"It was a great privilege to serve as Prime Minister and I would like to thank all those who served alongside me in politics, public service and all parts of our society, for their dedication and commitment to our country.”

Tony Blair: Petition to block knighthood passes one million signatures

A petition calling for the removal of former Prime Minister Tony Blair's knighthood has collected more than one million signatures.

AP 8 Jan 2022

The ex-Labour leader, who was in power from 1997 to 2007, was given the title as the New Year's Honours were awarded.

Citing his role in the Iraq War, the petition says the ex-PM is the "least deserving person" to get an honour

In response, No 10 said every prime minister before Sir Tony had received the same honour.

However, the spokesman added that such appointments were a matter for the Queen and the government had no involvement.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also defended his predecessor saying he had earned the title.

The petition, posted by actor and presenter Angus Scott on the change.org website, accuses Sir Tony of having "caused irreparable damage to both the constitution of the United Kingdom and to the very fabric of the nation's society" while in office.

"He was personally responsible for causing the death of countless innocent, civilian lives and servicemen in various conflicts. For this alone he should be held accountable for war crimes," it adds.

"Tony Blair is the least deserving person of any public honour, particularly anything awarded by Her Majesty the Queen."

Unlike the New Year's Honours list, which is drawn up by the government for the Queen's approval, the Order of the Garter is bestowed as a personal gift by the Queen.

The Honours Forfeiture Committee cannot recommend the removal of knighthoods handed out in this way.

Of the other four living former prime ministers, only Sir John Major has received a knighthood-level honour, with Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Theresa May as yet missing out.

Blair is a WAR CRIMINAL
