Donald Trump Casts Doubt on Russian Poisoning, Saying US 'Hasn't Had Proof'

Alexei Navalny was poisoned with NOVICHOK: German scientists have 'unequivocal proof' he was given nerve agent used by GRU in Salisbury attack

US president says media should be asking about China rather than Russia despite global condemnation of attack

The Telegraph UK, 5 SEP 2020.

President Donald Trump said the United States must look “very seriously” into the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but that his administration had not yet seen any proof.

“I think we have to look at it very seriously, if it’s the case,” he said, before talking at length about his diplomatic efforts in North Korea and nuclear non-proliferation in Russia. “I don’t know exactly what happened. It’s tragic. It’s terrible, it shouldn’t happen. We haven’t had any proof yet, but I will take a look.

“It is interesting that everybody’s always mentioning Russia … but I think probably China at this point is a nation that you should be talking about much more so than Russia.”

This week the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, revealed that tests at a military laboratory had “identified unequivocally” that the Kremlin critic had been poisoned with nerve agent novichok and called the case an “attempted murder”.

On Friday Nato condemned the attack as “horrific” and called for those responsible to be brought to justice. “Time and again we have seen critics of the [Vladimir Putin] regime attacked and threatened. Some have been killed,” said spokesperson Piers Cazelet.

Russia has until now not opened a criminal investigation and said there is no evidence yet of a crime. On Friday it continued to offer alternative theories for why Navalny fell ill two weeks ago, ranging from stress, dieting or a “simple lack of breakfast”.

With this, it is certain that Alexei Navalny is the victim of a crime,' Chancellor Angela Merkel said. 'He was meant to be silenced and I condemn this in the strongest possible manner.Angela Merkel: 'unequivocal proof' Alexei Navalny was poisoned with novichok

Trump did not take as strong a stance as the state department, which earlier on Friday expressed grave concern about the finding that Navalny was poisoned.

In a meeting in Washington earlier on Friday, deputy secretary of state Stephen Biegun told Russian ambassador Anatoliy Antonov that Moscow’s use of this chemical weapon would be a clear violation of its obligations under the chemical weapons convention.

“The deputy secretary urged Russia to cooperate fully with the international community’s investigation into this attack,” department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

Navalny is the most popular and prominent opponent of President Vladimir Putin, and the German announcement this week that he was poisoned by a nerve agent has raised the possibility of further western sanctions against Moscow.

POISONED Kremlin Critic Alexei Navalny Arrested on Return to Russia

Russia's leading opposition figure has been arrested and detained for 30 days, after returning to Moscow for the first time since he was poisoned last year.

Alexei Navalny: Poisoned Putin critic Navalny to be kept in custody

BBC News, 19 JAN 2021.

Dozens of people gathered outside the Khimki police station in freezing weather, demanding for Mr Navalny to be released

Alexei Navalny said a court ruling held inside a police station was a mockery and called for street protests.

Dozens of his supporters gathered outside the Moscow police station where he was being held and shouted "disgrace" and "Putin resign".

Mr Navalny was held soon after his flight from Germany arrived on Sunday.

Russian prosecutors say he violated the parole terms of a suspended sentence for embezzlement. He says the charges are politically motivated.

Last August, Mr Navalny, 44, was almost killed in a nerve agent attack, which he blamed personally on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin denies involvement. The opposition politician's allegations have, however, been backed up by reports from investigative journalists.

On Sunday, big crowds gathered at Moscow's Vnukovo airport to greet Mr Navalny's flight from Berlin - but in a last-minute decision the authorities re-routed the plane to another airport in the capital.

A makeshift courtroom was organised on Monday at a police station in Khimki, on the outskirts of Moscow, where Mr Navalny had spent the night.

The judge ordered Mr Navalny's detention until 15 February for violating his parole. He will have another hearing on 29 January to determine whether his suspended sentence of three-and-a-half years should be replaced with a jail term.

Mr Navalny said his treatment was beyond a "mockery of justice" and described the hearing as "lawlessness of the highest grade".

"Don't be afraid. Take to the streets, not for me, but for yourselves, for your future," he said in a video address (in Russian) from the police station.

A crowd of about 200 Navalny supporters gathered outside the police station in freezing weather, demanding his immediate release.

Mr Navalny was later seen led away by police to one of Moscow's prisons.

His lawyer, Vadim Kobzev, said they would appeal against the "illegal" court decision, according to Russia's Interfax news agency.

Meanwhile, more than 70 Navalny supporters and journalists were detained across Russia on Monday, according to the Monitoring group OVD-Info.

How Did Events Unfold on Sunday?

As Mr Navalny gradually recovered after emergency medical treatment in Germany, he said he intended to return to Russia.

On Sunday, he made good on that pledge, boarding a flight despite warnings he would face arrest on landing.

Alexei Navalny travelled to Moscow with his wife Yulia

The plane was packed with journalists, including from the BBC. Shortly before landing, the pilot announced that for "technical reasons", the plane was being diverted from Vnukovo airport, where thousands of Navalny supporters had gathered, to Sheremetyevo airport, causing a stir among the passengers.

A number of people were detained by riot police.

Alexei Navalny - The Basics

Mr Navalny is an anti-corruption campaigner and the most prominent face of Russian opposition to President Vladimir Putin

He attempted to stand in the 2018 presidential race, but was barred because of an embezzlement conviction that he says was politically motivated

An outspoken blogger, he has millions of Russian followers on social media and managed to get some supporters elected to local councils in Siberia in 2020

Alexei Navalny -POISONED Kremlin Critic: Russian Opposition Leaders' Jail Term Extended

Russias' Jailed Opposition Leader Has Been Sentenced to Another 19 Years in Prison

BBC 5 AUG 2023

Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has told supporters not to lose the will to resist, after his jail term was extended to 19 years.

Mr Navalny was found guilty of founding and funding an extremist organisation. He denies the charges.

He was already serving a nine-year term for parole violations, fraud and contempt of court. The charges are widely viewed as politically motivated.

The trial was held in a remote penal colony, where he has been since 2021.

The Kremlin's most vocal critic will serve his time in a "special regime colony", which Russian state prosecutors had been calling for.

Even more restrictive than a high security colony, such prisons are normally reserved for dangerous criminals, re-offenders and those with life imprisonment.

There he is likely to face greater isolation, with further restrictions on communications with the outside world.

He could also receive fewer visitors than he is used to, including his family and defence team, and may face longer periods of solitary confinement.

After the verdict, in a message to supporters posted for him on X (formerly known as Twitter) Mr Navalny remained defiant. "You, not me, are being frightened and deprived of the will to resist. Putin must not achieve his goal. Do not lose the will to resist," he wrote.

For this court case the phrase "behind closed doors" felt like an understatement.

Alexei Navalny was tried in the high security prison in which he's currently incarcerated; the proceedings were closed to the press and the public.

But for the verdict the BBC was allowed into Penal Colony Number 6 in the town of Melekhovo, 150 miles east of Moscow, where a hall was turned into a makeshift courtroom.

Along with other journalists we crammed into a small room dubbed the "press centre" to watch events on a video screen. We weren't allowed into the makeshift courtroom itself (a prison hall) where the verdict would be announced.

As he entered the courtroom and sat down at a table, Alexei Navalny looked relaxed. For him there was no drama about this situation: in a message posted for him yesterday on social media Russia's most prominent opposition figure had made it clear he'd been fully expecting a "Stalinist" sentence.

There was a picture on the video screen. But the audio feed from the courtroom was of poor quality and intermittent.

When the judge pronounced Mr Navalny guilty and passed sentence, it wasn't immediately clear to the journalists watching and listening how long the new prison sentence was.

Later, Mr Navalny himself confirmed the figure, in the social media message posted for him.

"Nineteen years in a special regime colony. The figure doesn't mean anything. I fully understand that, like many political prisoners my sentence is for life. Life is measured either by my lifespan or that of the regime."

The new sentence "raises serious concerns about judicial harassment and instrumentalisation of the court system for political purposes in Russia," UN human rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement.

"Putin is trying to frighten as many Alexei supporters as he can", Mr Navalny's press secretary Kira Yarmysh said of his sentencing.

"We have to put all our efforts in trying to get rid of Putin, and this will mean that Alexei will be free," she added.

For more than a decade, Mr Navalny sought to expose corruption at the heart of Russian power. His video investigations have received tens of millions of views online.

A charismatic campaigner, he seemed to be the only Russian opposition leader capable of mobilising people in large numbers across Russia to take part in anti-government protests.

But in 2020, he was poisoned in Siberia by what Western laboratories later confirmed to be a nerve agent.

A later report by the investigative outlet Bellingcat and Russian news site The Insider implicated several agents of Russia's internal security service, the FSB, in the attack.

After recovering from the attack, Mr Navalny returned to Russia in 2021 despite warnings that he could face arrest.

He was immediately arrested upon arrival at Moscow's Vnukovo airport.

Alexei Navalny was filmed by the BBC saying goodbye to his wife in 2021
