Japan Earthquake: Major City Shakes as 6.1 MAG Hits
Kushiro Shakes For Too Long as 6.1 MAG Tremor Hits AP 31 MAY 2025 ![]() A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake has rocked the Japanese city of Kushiro, with the epicentre just off the coast the quake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 44km The tremor occurred off the cost of Kushiro, at a moderately shallow depth of 44km. The city of Kushiro, on Japan's northern island, was hit by tremors at around 5.30pm local time (9.30 GMT), on Saturday. The epicentre was recorded just off the coast of northeastern Japan. Taking to X, one local said the shaking went on for too long and reported residents were feeling aftershocks. One local took to X to share their fears following the strong tremors that shook the Kushiro region. This resident described the initial shakes and subsequent aftershocks. They wrote: The shaking of the earthquake just now felt stronger than its seismic intensity, and most importantly, lasted longer. There are aftershocks and I feel kind of uneasy. All we can do is hope that the energy is released in small amounts so that nothing serious happens." A tsunami warning was thankfully not issued following the large earthquake. Despite this, waves of less than 0.2 metres are expected so locals have been warned to be careful around water due to sea level changes. |
