Hurricane Helene made landfall Thursday night in northwestern Florida as a Category 4 storm as forecasters warned that the enormous system could create a ?nightmare? storm surge and bring dangerous winds and rain across much of the southeastern U.S.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Helene roared ashore around 11:10 p.m. EDT near the mouth of the Aucilla River in the Big Bend area of Florida?s Gulf Coast. It had maximum sustained winds estimated at 140 mph ( 225 kph). That location was only about 20 miles northwest of where Hurricane Idalia came ashore last year at nearly the same ferocity and caused widespread damage.
Helene prompted hurricane and flash flood warnings extending far beyond the coast up into northern Georgia and western North Carolina.
More than a million homes and businesses were without power in Florida and more than 50,000 in Georgia, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us. The governors of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas and Virginia all declared emergencies in their states.
One person was killed in Florida when a sign fell on their car and two people were reported killed in a possible tornado in south Georgia as the storm approached.
?When Floridians wake up tomorrow morning, we?re going to be waking up to a state where very likely there?s been additional loss of life and certainly there?s going to be loss of property,? Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a news conference Thursday night.
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee had issued an ?extreme wind warning? for the Big Bend as the eyewall approached:

Donald Trump visited storm-ravaged Georgia on Monday afternoon to survey recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene, which tore through the southeast late last week.
At least 133 people have been killed after the hurricane slammed into Florida last Thursday then tore a path north, bringing catastrophic flooding and powerful winds. More than 600 people remain missing in a single North Carolina county as of late Monday.
Deaths also have been reported in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee.
In Buncombe County, North Carolina, at least 40 have died and around 600 people are reported missing.
Landslides have devastated the southern Appalachia region. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told CNN on Monday that communities there were ?wiped off that map.?
Sad President Joe Biden said he will visit North Carolina on Wednesday.
Over a million people remain without power.
Officials have warned of the challenges of getting crucial supplies such as water to those in need.

In North Carolina, extreme floods washed away homes and bridges. At one point, authorities closed 400 roads, deeming them unsafe for travel, state officials said.

Winds from Hurricane Milton have torn the roof off Tropicana Field, the domed MLB stadium that has been used as a shelter for first responders and those removing debris from Hurricane Helene.
Footage saw the slanted roofs torn off of the 34-year-old stadium. The roofs were designed to better protect it from such storms.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management designated the stadium as a 10,000-person base camp for debris cleanup operations and first-responders.
The storm has already killed multiple people as authorities warn any residents left behind 'SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW.'
Crane falls in St. Petersburg due to high winds, causing destruction to nearby buildings
The National Weather Service says it has received reports of multiple collapsed cranes due to high winds in St. Petersburg, about 50 miles south of Siesta Key, where Milton made landfall.

Federal emergency response workers operating in North Carolinas Rutherford County in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene were told to evacuate on Saturday over concerns that an "armed militia" was threatening workers in the area.
An official with the U.S. Forest Service, which is supporting recovery efforts along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), sent a message to numerous federal agencies a warning that FEMA had advised all federal responders in Rutherford County to "stand down and evacuate the county immediately"
National Guard troops had come across two trucks of "armed militia saying they were out hunting FEMA," the email said. "The IMTs [incident management teams] have been notified and are coordinating the evacuation of all assigned personnel in that county."
A FEMA spokesperson confirmed to Newsweek that the agency had made changes to its recovery efforts to ensure the safety of staff and survivors. Disaster survivor assistance teams worked temporarily at fixed locations and secure areas, and no longer went door to door out of an abundance of caution.
It comes as a North Carolina man who allegedly threatened to harm FEMA workers was arrested on Saturday, authorities said. William Jacob Parsons, 44, was charged with "going armed to the terror of the public," Rutherford County Sheriffs Office confirmed on Monday. He has been released on bail and denies making threats towards aid workers.
The sheriffs office said it received a call about a man with an assault rifle who made a comment "about possibly harming" FEMA relief workers in the hard-hit areas of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock.
