A frantic search effort has been launched after two buses carrying at least 60 people were tragically swept into a raging river by a landslide in the early hours of Friday.

The relentless rain and subsequent landslides have made rescue efforts challenging following the disaster in central Nepal.

Three survivors managed to swim to safety, but as of late morning, rescuers had found no trace of the submerged buses, which were likely carried downstream by the fast-flowing Trishuli River. Recent heavy monsoon rains have caused the rivers to swell and their waters to turn a murky brown, further complicating the search for wreckage.

The buses were travelling on a major highway connecting the capital to southern Nepal when they were swept away around 3 am near Simaltal, approximately 120 kilometres (75 miles) west of Kathmandu.

Additional landslides have blocked routes to the area in several places, according to government administrator Khima Nanada Bhusal. Additional rescuers and security forces have been dispatched to assist with the rescue efforts.

In another tragic incident on Thursday night, a family of seven was killed when a landslide buried their hut near the resort town of Pokhara. The family was asleep when the landslide hit, crushing their home and damaging three nearby houses.

The monsoon season, which runs from June to September, often brings heavy rains to Nepal, triggering frequent landslides in this mountainous Himalayan nation.
