Oh Crap! So You ThInk You Are Cold -Live in Coldest Village on Earth −71°C (−95°F)

One Day in The Coldest Village on Earth −71°C (−95°F) | Yakutia, Siberia

Inside Worlds’ Coldest Village Where -60C is Average. No Plumbing So Radiators Don't work Due to Frozen Pipes

BBC 1 DEC 2023

Eyebrows and eyelashes can freeze when you step outside in the Siberian city

Those people currently shivering in cold weather may want to be thankful they they aren't living in Yakutsk, where average winter temperature is -50°C (-58°F).

Residents of the frostiest city in the world are used to having no plumbing - because the pipes freeze solid.

The city of Yakutsk in east Siberia is widely considered to be the coldest anywhere on the planet.

It has a population of 355,443, roughly the same size as Leicester, and residents are forced to wrap up warm in thick clothes all year round as temperatures stay far below freezing.

The mercury even dropped to -62.7C earlier this year, and -40C is generally considered to be normal in the area over winter.

Because it is too cold for radiators to work due to frozen pipes, many locals in the Russian mining town begin the day by fetching firewood to heat their homes.

Most children walk to the local schools in unbelievably cold temperatures - and are only given a day off when it drops below -55C. Dads meanwhile head out for traditional ice fishing, where burrow deep into the ice to try and fetch food for the family.

Earlier this year, locals blasted Vladimir Putin and the authorities for not stepping in to help as frequent power cuts left families struggling in temperatures below -60Cwor. One local woman said: “Everything is falling apart.

Putin finds money for war in Ukraine, hypersonic missiles, and his luxury palaces, while ordinary people are left to freeze.” Another said: “Mothers with babies are crying in despair - this is an extremely hard situation.”
