Iceland Declares State of Emergency Over Volcanic Eruption Threat - 800 Earthquakes Rattle Nation in 14 Hours

Volcanic Eruption is Imminent in Iceland; Evacuations Underway, Eruption Could Begin in Hours -Blue Lagoon Closes Over Eruption Fears

BBC 11 NOV 2023

The increased activity is concentrated around the ***radalsfjall volcanic area in the southwest of the country

Thousands of minor earthquakes have raised fears in Iceland of an possible volcanic eruption.

Over 20,000 tremors have been detected by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) since late October, with 1,400 in the 24 hours to midday on Thursday.

The heightened geological activity led to the famed Blue Lagoon being closed as a precaution.

It is concentrated in the southwestern Reykjanes Peninsula, which was dormant for 800 years before a 2021 eruption.

The IMO said that magma - molten rock - was accumulating at a depth of around 5km (3m) northwest of Thorbjorn mountain.

The Blue Lagoon is easily visible from the mountain. The owners of the famed turquoise hot springs said they would close the site until 16 November out of concern for employees' welfare.

The Met Office said an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude, the largest since the increased activity began, was detected shortly past midnight on Thursday in the ***radalsfjall volcanic area, around 30km from the capital Reykjavik.

Ingibjorg Lilja Omarsdottir of the Icelandic Civil Protection Agency has been posted to the nearby town of Grindavik to prepare for a potential evacuation of the town.

She said there was no imminent need for evacuation but that local authorities were prepared in the event of "magma appearing to rise to the surface".

Volcanic eruptions occur when magma, which is lighter than the solid rock around it, rises to the earth's surface from deep below it.

Default re: NEW Volcanic Eruption in Iceland AGAIN Forcing Residents to Flee Their Homes

Iceland Braces For a Volcanic Eruption After Thousands of Earthquakes

Iceland On Edge as Volcanic Eruption Nears After 300 MORE Overnight Earthquakes

BBC 16 NOV 2023

A volcanic eruption in Iceland could be just hours away with thousands of earthquakes rumbling beneath the surface for days.

Cracks cut across a main road in the southwestern town of Grindavik, home to around 4,000 people

Around 4,000 residents have been evacuated from the southwestern town of Grindavik as authorities claim molten rock is likely to rise to the surface of the earth, with a lava river potentially hitting a geothermal power station. Another 300 earthquakes were reported overnight and experts are concerned that it is purely a matter of time before ***radalsfjall erupts.

The area has been described it as a “ghost town” after everyone was ordered to flee. Iceland has declared a state of emergency after the quakes, just off the Reykjanes peninsula. The Icelandic Meteorological Office said an eruption at the fishing community could begin at any time with experts believing a 'corridor' around nine miles deep has developed beneath.

Iceland's Civil Protection Agency said the decision to evacuate came after they could not rule out a "magma tunnel that is currently forming could reach Grindavík". Authorities are currently racing to build defence walls around the Svartsengi geothermal power plant, located just four miles away. It produces hot and cold water and electricity for the entire country.

Residents reported hearing 'unholy sounds' from beneath the ground as they left their homes. Those allowed to return to collect belongings and pets were told to 'drop everything if you hear sirens'. All roads into the town are now closed, other than to emergencies services.

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, which has been closed to tourists

Iceland - one of the most geologically active regions in the world - has 30 active volcanic sites. Residents were urged to "remain calm because we have a good amount of time to react" after the decision was made to evacuate.

"The likelihood of an eruption remains high," officials from the Icelandic Met Office said today. "If an eruption occurs, the most likely location will be on the magma intrusion. Our latest hazard assessment does not indicate any other potential eruption sites."

Matthew James Roberts, the director of the Service and Research Division at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told Reuters that magma building up under the earth's surface is causing the ground "to deform, effectively balloon, as the pressure of the magma and the volume of the magma increases."

Grindavik, Iceland

All roads into Grindavik have been closed as residents leave their homes

Huge sinkholes have emerged on roads due to volcanic activity while the nearby The popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa has been closed to tourists. Meteorologists are continue to keep a very close eye on the region after high levels of sufur dioxide were detected. There's been an increase in earthquake activity the region surrounding the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, since late October.

Icelandic Met Office official Benedikt Ófeigsson says it is likely that the magma has come very close to the surface. “SO2 is not released from magma until very close to the surface.

It just means the top kilometer,” he told local media. We are talking about maybe 500 meters. It’s unclear, it’s so high pressure, it’s pressure dependent when it comes up. So it’s not possible to tell the depth directly, but it [the magma] must be very shallow for us to see SO2”.

Iceland Volcano: Giant Walls Built to Protect Power Plant From Eruption

Ten days after 4000 locals were forced to flee their homes, Icelandic authorities are rushing to build barriers to protect the town of Grindavik and a power plant as nearby volcano threatens to erupt

BBC 22 NOV 2023

Two giant walls are being built to hold back lava as Iceland fears the situation could “change suddenly with little warning”.

Yesterday the Icelandic Met Office said the risk of an eruption in the next few days remains “high”.

But civil protection bosses said they are ahead of time with barriers being built to protect a power plant and an abandoned town.

One wall is 26ft high to protect the plant and is being made in the mountains where they most fear an eruption, while the second is a 2.4mile semi-circle wall just above the stricken fishing town Grindavik.

Civil Protection chief Vidir Reynisson said their biggest challenge is if the lava destroys the *Svartsengi geothermal plant – as they would be struggling for hot water. “We have plans for the electricity but still there is a lot of challenge around the hot water,” he admitted. “If we were to put electric heaters in all the homes in the area we would drain the power system just for that.”

Around 30,000 people get their electricity and hot water from the plant on the Reykjanes peninsula near the capital Reykjavik.

Mr Reynisson admitted: “Nobody is going to have a normal Christmas in Grindavik,” and there could be disruption in the area for decades. But he said they are also looking at long-term planning in case they face the “unlikely scenario” the lava threatens a second town.

Evacuation plans have been drawn up for the town of Reykjanesbaer, which has a population of 22,000, but he says this area sits “outside the area which is prone to eruption”.

Geophysicist Benedikt Gunnar Ófeigsson, of the Icelandic Met Office, told the Mirror about the area 1.5miles away from the plant and the town, saying: “We see magma coming in at several levels and seismic activity associated with that.

Iceland Government Claims Volcanic Eruption Poses No Threat

Icelandic fears were confirmed on Monday night when a volcano erupted following more than a month of warning signs.

9 News Australia 20 DEC 2023

The Earthtunes app, developed by Northwestern University, enables users to hear seismic activities, which are inaudible

22:17 local time on Monday night when an earthquake swarm was followed by an eruption which tore open a 2.5-mile (4km) fissure.

Rivers of lava spewed from the fissure, snaking downwards and erupting in fountains of red and gold molten rock.

In the new clip, as the fissure becomes fully formed on Monday, the sounds become quieter.

During this quieter period, the Earth's crust is no longer fracturing, allowing magma to flow freely.

'The activity is formidable, exciting and scary,' said Northwestern seismologist Suzan van der Lee, who co-developed Earthtunes.

'Iceland did the right thing by evacuating residents in nearby Grindavik and the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant, one of the worlds’ oldest geothermal power plants.

Following the scenes of a fiery volcanic eruption, the Icelandic Government has confirmed the volcano does not pose a threat to life. However, warnings have been issued that gas pollution could hit the city.

The terrifying sounds that hinted Icelands' volcano was ready to blow: Audio clip reveals the 'exciting and scary' seismic activity in the build up to the eruption

Volcano Erupts For Second Time in Southwestern Iceland, Sending Lava Flowing Toward Nearby Settlement

Building Catches Fire After a Volcano Erupts in Iceland -Emergency Declared as Lava Sets Town on Fire

Daily Mail 15 JAN 2024

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) - A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted for the second time in less than a month on Sunday, sending lava snaking toward a nearby community and setting at least one home on fire.

The eruption, which began just before 8 a.m. local time, came after authorities evacuated the town of Grindavik following a swarm of small earthquakes, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said. Hours later, a second fissure opened near the edge of town and lava crept toward the homes.

"We just watch it on the cameras and there´s really nothing else we can do," Grindavik resident Reynir Berg Jónsson told Iceland´s RUV television.

Grindavik is a town of 3,800 people about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Reykjavik, Iceland´s capital. The community was previously evacuated in November following a series of earthquakes that opened large cracks in the earth between the town and Sýlingarfell, a small mountain to the north. The nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa - one of Iceland´s biggest tourist attractions - also closed temporarily.

The volcano eventually erupted on Dec. 18, and residents were allowed to return to their homes on Dec. 22.

In the weeks since then, emergency workers have been building defensive walls around Grindavik, but the barriers weren´t complete and lava is moving toward the community, the meteorological office said.

People watch from the north as the volcano erupts near Grindavík, Iceland, Sunday Jan. 14, 2024. A volcano has erupted in southwestern Iceland, sending semi-molten rock spewing toward a nearby settlement for the second time in less than a month. Iceland's Icelandic Meteorological Office says the eruption Sunday came after a swarm of earthquakes near the town of Grindavik.

NEW Volcanic Eruption in Iceland Spews Fountain of Lava Into The Air

Forces residents to flee their homes AGAIN after already being evacuated in January - with molten rock flowing towards small fishing town

MailOnline 17 MAR 2024

Watch the stunning moment lava erupts from new volcanic fissure in Iceland, the fourth eruption to hit the region since December.

Footage from the area showed fountains of molten rock soaring from fissures in Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula between stora Skogfell and Hagafell today after authorities had warned for weeks that an eruption was imminent.

The eruption promoted a small number of people to be evacuated from the region, with images appearing to show lava flowing rapidly south towards the nearby Grindavik fishing town.

'Warning: An eruption began in Reykjanes,' the Icelandic Meteorological Office said on its website, while Reykjavik's Keflavik Airport's website showed it remained open both for departures and arrivals.

Icelandic police said they had declared a state of emergency for the area and the Civil Defence authority dispatched a helicopter to survey the extent of the eruption.
