People are being evacuated as large wildfires are rampaging across the UK, with one blanketing a town in thick smoke.

Crews from 13 fire stations are battling a large blaze on moorland near Greater Manchester with smoke billowing for miles.

And residents in Aberystwyth, Wales, are being warned to keep their windows and doors closed as firefighters dash to the scene of a woodland blaze.

Crews have been in attendance on Marsden Moor, near to Saddleworth, and Penglais woods in the Welsh university town since earlier this afternoon.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has released a dramatic image of crews surrounded by heavy smoke on the moor, with burning embers on the ground.

It's the latest in a string of fires to take place so far this year there.

Meanwhile, emergency services are evacuating a building on Infirmary Road, Aberystwyth, while the growing blaze is extinguished.

Footage shows vegetation burning furiously, with local Edward Neve saying the university town is "looking very apocalyptic".

Dyfed-Powys Police said: "Infirmary Road in Aberystwyth is currently closed due to a fire. Can all local residents please keep doors and windows closed whilst the emergency services deal with this and make safe. Thank you for your cooperation."

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We are in attendance at a wildfire on Marsden Moor currently measuring 200 square meters, but increasing quickly. We received a number of calls this afternoon to the site at Binn Lane, near Butterley Reservoir in Marsden.

"Crews in attendance are from Meltham, Todmorden, Slaithwaite, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Rastrick, Halifax, Leeds, Cleckheaton, Mirfield, Odsal, Featherstone and Skelmanthorpe. Four wildfire units are at the scene along with the drone.

"The all terrain Argocat is in attendance and the Polaris is on its way to the site. Firefighters are using blowers, beaters and hoses to help extinguish the flames.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service have recently been pushing Operation Dawns Glaw, a multi-agency taskforce of specialist from key agencies across Wales committed to reduce, and where possible eliminate the impact of grass fires across Wales.

In a press release, the service went on to say, in 2022 the fire services across Wales attended 3,269 grassfire incidents – this was an increase of 62% on the previous year with deliberate grass fires increasing by 1542 (47%) to 2263.
