A powerful earthquake has hit a wide area in south-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, killing more than 100 people and trapping many others.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.

In Turkey, officials confirmed more than 276 deaths so far and 10 cities hit, including Diyarbakir.

In Syria, more than 50 people were killed, state media reported.

There are fears the death toll will rise sharply in the coming hours.

Many buildings have collapsed and rescue teams have been deployed to search for survivors under huge piles of rubble.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleymon Soylu said 10 cities were affected: Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis.

In Malatya province, north-east of Gaziantep, at least 23 people were killed, local officials said. In Sanliurfa, to the east, there were 17 deaths. And more deaths were reported in Diyarbakir and Osmaniye.

About 440 people were injured.

A BBC Turkish correspondent in Diyarbakir, reported that a shopping mall in the city collapsed.

In Syria, state media reported many deaths in the regions of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia.

The tremor was also felt in Lebanon and Cyprus.

"I was writing something and just all of a sudden the entire building started shaking and yes I didn't really know what to feel," Mohamad El Chamaa, a student in the Lebanese capital Beirut, told the BBC.

"I was right next to the window so I was just scared that they might shatter. It went on for four-five minutes and it was pretty horrific. It was mind-blowing," he said.

Rushdi Abualouf, a BBC producer in the Gaza Strip, said there was about 45 seconds of shaking in the house he was staying in.

Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a three-month state of emergency in the areas worst affected by the earthquake. The president said the state of emergency is to make sure rescue work can be "carried out quickly". In this photo you can see people receiving free meals after the earthquake in the southeast of Turkey.

The UK government sent a team of 76 search and rescue experts to Turkey to help survivors. These members of the London Fire Brigade and a sniffer dog will be part of the team. Foreign secretary James Cleverly said the impact of the quakes was "on a scale that we have not seen for quite some time". The UK also says it will look at working with the United Nations to help those in Syria.

Across the UK, people have started to gather donations such as clothes, blankets, food and nappies. This is at the Aziziye Mosque in Stoke Newington, London. The British Turkish Association is also taking donations, particularly winter clothes because it's currently very cold in Turkey. Many of the items collected will be shipped to Turkey on a cargo flight.

Specialised teams from different countries including Italy, and Israel are on the way to help. Aid has started to arrive with food, medicine and shelter supplies from around the world. Germany sent their team of rescuers, including doctors and rescue experts, to help find survivors of the quake. Rescue workers are facing challenges, such as the freezing cold conditions which make things more difficult.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that as many as 23 million Turkish and Syrian people will be affected by these quakes. This includes over a million children.

International aid is being sent to the affected areas from South Korea - shown in this picture - to China, Russia, Pakistan Japan, India, Iran and many others. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has thanked countries who have sent and offered help.

New 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Turkey and Syria

Major Earthquakes Hit Turkey and Syria

Devastation and destruction after quakes leave thousands dead

BBC 21 FEB

Deadly NEW Earthquake traps people under rubble

Rescuers are once again searching for people trapped under rubble in Turkey after another earthquake hit the country, killing at least six people.

A 6.4 magnitude tremor struck near the city of Antakya near the border with Syria, where massive quakes devastated both countries on 6 February.

The earlier quakes killed 44,000 people in Turkey and Syria with tens of thousands more left homeless.

Buildings weakened by those tremors collapsed in both countries on Monday.

Turkey's disaster and emergency agency says the 6.4 earthquake occurred at 20:04 local time (17:04 GMT) at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles).

This was followed by a 5.8 aftershock three minutes later and 31 subsequent aftershocks that were not as severe.

The health minister, Dr Fahrettin Koca, said 294 people have been injured - 18 of them seriously.

It's thought the death toll has been relatively low this time because the earthquake struck in an area that was largely empty after it was badly hit by the 6 February quake.

Reports from the city of Antakya spoke of fear and panic in the streets as ambulances and rescue crews tried to reach the worst affected areas where the walls of badly damaged buildings had collapsed.

"I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet," local resident Muna al-Omar told Reuters news agency, crying as she held her seven-year-old son. She had been in a tent in a park in the city centre when the new earthquakes hit.

Ali Mazlum, 18, told AFP news agency he had been looking for the bodies of family members from the previous earthquakes when the latest tremors hit.

"You don't know what to do... we grabbed each other and right in front of us, the walls started to fall," he said.

Antakya, the capital of Turkey's Hatay Province, was one of the places hit most severely by the 6 February earthquake

In the city of Adana, the latest earthquake drove people to a volleyball centre that had been converted into a rescue centre following the first earthquake.

The authorities have told the BBC they believe as many as 600 people may have arrived overnight - seeking a sturdy, ground-level building in which to take shelter.

When the quake struck, people were reported to have run out into the streets rather than staying put, reflecting the fact that there is still significant fear two weeks after the initial disaster.

In Syria, some 470 injured people are said to have visited hospitals after Monday's quakes, which were also reportedly felt in Egypt and Lebanon.

In a visit to Turkey on Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced $100m (£83m) in humanitarian aid, saying that America would help with earthquake recovery "for as long as it takes".

It is one of several countries to have offered their help in the wake of the first earthquake.

Rescue operations had recently been wound down in all but two areas, with hopes of finding people alive fading fast.
