Hurricane Fiona: Dominican Republic Hit as Storm Strengthens

Hurricane Fiona is continuing to strengthen - threatening lives in parts of the Caribbean, say US forecasters.

BBC News 20 SEP 2022

Roads in the Dominican Republic have been blocked

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the category two storm currently packing speeds of 115mph (185km/h) could even worsen to a category four - the second-highest designation.

Rain is lashing Puerto Rico, where at least two people have died and 90% of the island remains without power.

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader says damage is "considerable".

The hurricane was about 10 miles (15km) north-west of Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands at 12:00 GMT on Tuesday, the NHC said.

Mr Abinader has declared three eastern provinces of Dominican Republic to be disaster zones, amid warnings from the NHC of "heavy rainfall and life-threatening flash flooding".

Several villages were cut off in the country as floodwaters rose, while hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes and thousands were left without power.

Lexie Wilcox, who lives in the easternmost province of Altagracia, said it was the worst hurricane she had experienced and had hit her local area much harder than Hurricane Maria in 2017, which killed nearly 3,000 people in Puerto Rico.

On Monday morning there were trees down, with roads blocked and a lot of flooding.

She was unable to sleep, spending the night mopping up rainwater.

The roof has been partially blown off her shed, and a security sign blew off her house.

Ms Wilcox and her neighbours are without electricity, and believe this may take days to be fixed as the storm is still ongoing.

Connection returned for a few minutes on Monday, just long enough to allow Ms Wilcox, who is Canadian, to watch the end of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral while the hurricane raged outside.

The NHC warned earlier of ongoing threats to life in Puerto Rico because of "catastrophic flooding". An estimated 1.3 million homes and businesses in Puerto Rico are currently without power, Reuters news agency reports. Fiona made landfall there on Sunday, causing not only deluges but also widespread landslides and mudslides.

Hurricane Fiona Intensifies

US President Joe Biden pledged to scale up support for the island following a conversation with the governor.

Images shared on social media have shown cars submerged and people attempting to wade down streets filled with water, while efforts continue to rescue those who have got stranded.

The victims in Puerto Rico were a 58-year-old man who died after being swept away by a river, while another in his 30s died in a generator fire.

The storm caused an island-wide blackout which providers warned could take days to fix.

Puerto Rico's electricity grid remains fragile after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria - the most powerful storm in its history.

Some areas of the island face the prospect of 30in (76cm) of rainfall as the storm passes.

Storm conditions have also been forecast in the Bahamas, while people in Bermuda have been advised to monitor Fiona's progress.

Hurricane Ian: Florida WARNED to Brace For Major Disaster

Hurricane Ian strengthens to Category 2 storm and could be ‘something that we haven’t seen in our lifetime’

Florida's governor has warned the state to brace for a potential "major disaster" as category two Hurricane Ian gathers force in the Caribbean.

BBC News 27 SEP 2022.

Strong winds began hitting Cuba's south coast on Monday night. Ian is expected to make landfall on Florida's west coast sometime on Wednesday.

The hurricane's exact path is uncertain but Governor Ron DeSantis warned of "broad impacts throughout the state".

Residents have been stocking up on food, water, medicine and fuel.

Some parts of the state have not seen a hurricane of this magnitude in about a century.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said it expects "rapid strengthening" from Ian over the next 48 hours as it inches north from its current location 130 west of Cuba.

"This is a really big hurricane at this point," Florida's governor said at a Monday news conference, urging residents to "remain calm", but "do what you need to be prepared".

The governor declared a state of emergency for all of Florida over the weekend and has activated 5,000 National Guard troops to assist with relief efforts.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey says the cost of the cleanup after post-tropical storm Fiona isn't yet clear, but nearly 100 homes — and counting — were damaged beyond repair in southwestern Newfoundland.

He said the number of destroyed houses will likely grow as more residents return to their property and discover the storm has rendered their home unlivable.

"The devastation is unbelievable," he said during a media briefing at the Channel-Port aux Basques town office Monday afternoon.

Furey, who had been in Gallipoli, Turkey, on Friday to attend a dedication ceremony for a memorial to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, said he cut his travel plans short Saturday when the magnitude of the damage in communities on Newfoundland's southwest coast became clear.

In the coming days, Furey said, the province will create a financial package to help people who have been displaced and either did not have homeowners' insurance, or whose insurance did not cover storm surge damage.

CUBA Hit by TOTAL BLACKOUT as 2 Million Evacuate in Florida

Storm Surge Could Reach 10 Feet in Tampa Florida Area

BBC 28 SEP 2022.

Two people have died and the power supply has been severed to Cuba’s entire population of 11 million after Hurricane Ian hammered one of the island’s main power plants.

The hurricane is now gathering strength and bearing down on Florida as the state races to prepare for a “life-threatening” storm expected to pass over the Florida Keys.

More than 2.5 million Floridians have been placed under evacuation orders or warnings with the sprawling storm on track to make landfall as a Category 3 or Category 4 hurricane later today.

Governor Ron DeSantis urged Floridians to heed warnings to evacuate to higher ground due to the potential for “catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge”.

He said 8,000 people were without power in southeastern Florida and that 30,000 state personnel were on alert to help respond to outages.

“This is a lot of nasty weather that we’re in store for over the next few days,” he said.

The most recent models have the hurricane projected to make landfall south of Tampa Bay, where storm surges could reach up to 12 ft (3.7 metres). Up to 24 inches (61cm) of rain is expected in some areas and wind speeds of 130 miles per hour (209km/h).

Scores of flights Delayed as Hurricane Ian Approaches Florida

Tampa Bay International Airport announced that it would be shutting on Tuesday afternoon as Hurricane Ian moves towards Florida.

The major airport, which has 280 daily flights, will suspend operations at 5pm amid the threat of the Category 3 storm which is set to bring more than 100mph winds, severe downpours and “life-threatening” coastal surge to the west coast of Florida.

Governor Ron DeSantis urged Floridians to heed warnings to evacuate and seek higher ground due to potential for “catstrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge”.

Hurricane Ian Leaves Two Million Without Power in Florida

Hurricane Ian Batters Florida -Catastrophic’ Winds and Rain

Storm Surges Break Records

---At least one death is likely linked to the storm, which made landfall Wednesday afternoon as a Category 4 beast.

BBC News 29 SEP 2022.

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida on Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 storm. Residents across the state were hunkered down, with widespread power outages, damage and at least one fatality likely linked to the storm.

Officials in Palm Beach County said the body of a 34-year-old man had been found in floodwaters in Martin County, Florida. The cause of death was still under investigation, although rescue workers said it was likely linked to the hurricane.

Florida emergency rescue officials warned residents to stay indoors until the storm had passed and to never walk or drive through floodwaters. Should water comes into any homes, they said, residents were urged to seek the highest ground indoors.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Service reported water levels had surged more than 6 feet above normal high tide levels in Naples, Florida, just before Ian made landfall. That figure was far higher than the record of 4.25 feet set during 2017’s Hurricane Irma.

Storm surge records were also set in Key West and Fort Myers. Videos from those areas show water flowing through streets.

Update re: Hurricane Ian DEVASTATES Florida Hits Carolina -Death Toll Rises

Hurricane Ian: Death Toll Rises as Storm Strengthens

A huge search and rescue effort is continuing in Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, which cut a swathe of destruction across the US state.

BBC 30 SEP 2022

Frankie (L) and Kendrick Romulus stand next to a boat that crashed into their apartment complex in Fort Myers, one of the worst affected areas

At least 10 people have died in the state but officials fear the confirmed toll could rise considerably.

Joe Biden has warned the category one storm could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history, with a "substantial loss of life".

Ian is now moving inland and heading towards North and South Carolina.

A blackout is still affecting some 2.2 million Florida homes and businesses.

The flood waters have been so severe they have trapped some people in their homes, officials said, with the National Guard going door to door in the city of Orlando to rescue those stranded.

The 10 deaths that have have been confirmed were all in the south-west Charlotte County, which saw intense winds.

Joseph Tiseo, a local commissioner, told the BBC the area had a "tremendous wind event that lasted for 12 hours straight... it was brutal".

He said said it was not yet clear how many of the deaths were a direct result of the hurricane.

A little further south, Lee County took the brunt of the storm surge.

The state's Governor Ron DeSantis told a news conference on Thursday evening that the damage in Fort Myers, a harbourside city there, was "almost indescribable".

"To see a house just sitting in the middle of Estero Bay, literally must have gotten picked up, flown because of the massive wind speed and the storm surge and deposited in a body of water," he said.

"I would say the most significant damage that I saw was on Ford Myers Beach, some of the homes were wiped out, some of its was just concrete slabs"

One woman who lost her home said the experience is "numbing" and has her feeling "overwhelmed".

"It's not my first hurricane but it's my first total loss," Karen, who lives on San Carlos Island in Fort Myers told Reuters.

Some residents had to swim out of their homes.

"You have to either swim or drown," an Orlando woman told CBS News, the BBC's partner in the US.

A woman in Fort Myers, who swam to safety when her ground floor apartment began to flood, said when she returned home she "had to wait about five minutes for all the floodwaters to come out".

And at the Sun Seekers mobile home park in North Fort Myers, residents recounted their terror as they tried to protect themselves with blankets.

"It was terrifying, because you're helpless", one of the residents, Kim said. "We had no [phone] service to call anyone, but no one would have come anyway."

At the governor's briefing, Kevin Guthrie, director at the Florida Division of Emergency Management warned about "indirect deaths" - the fatalities that can happen after a storm system has passed.

He warned homeowners to watch out for power lines mixed in trees and said no one should be tinkering with generator sand chainsaws, or climbing ladders without proper training.

"People need to be extremely careful," Mr Guthrie said.

"If you do not know how to use a chainsaw. If you do not know how to climb a ladder. If you do not know the difference between a cable line and a power line, you should not be doing that."

Some parts of Naples, a seaside city south of Fort Myers, have been rendered a dark and deserted ghost town, and the city's iconic pier has been smashed in half.

The BBC's Bernd Debusmann, who is reporting from Naples, says a concession stand - which just days ago marked the halfway point on the pier - now stands precariously over the water, with splintered pieces of wood hanging off.

About a block from the beachfront, some roads remain impassable and underwater, while others have been left covered in mud as the slowly water recedes.

Deadly Hurricane Ian Hits South Carolina

Florida Reels in Aftermath of Hurricane Ian, Death Toll Rises

Hurricane Ian batters Carolinas as massive rescue efforts continue in Florida

Daily Mail 2 OCT 2022.

Deadly Hurricane Ian Hits South Carolina. A revived and deadly Hurricane Ian is barreling its way north toward Carolina today and the historic city of Charleston, a day after carving a path of destruction across central Florida that left rescue crews racing to reach trapped residents along the state's Gulf Coast.

Scores of residents in Charleston, watching the devastation that Hurricane Ian brought to Florida on television, have fled the city in a steady stream of vehicles and are heading for higher ground.

Hurricane Ian, now a Category 1 storm with 85mph sustained winds, bringing with it 'life-threatening' storm surges and floods, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest update.

Officials said Saturday that thousands of people have been rescued in the days since Hurricane Ian ripped a wide path of destruction across Florida, and that the death toll rose to nearly three dozen in the state. Meanwhile, more than a million customers remained without power on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The southwest coast of Florida took the brunt of the storm surge when Ian made landfall on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Sanibel and Captiva islands were cut off from the rest of the state when parts of the road connecting the two were destroyed by Ian.

In Lee County, which includes the hard-hit Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach, sheriff Carmine Marceno said on Saturday that there were at least 35 fatalities and that his office would wait until all family members could be notified to release more information on the casualties. Rescue efforts were still ongoing throughout the county, he said.

As of Saturday evening, at least 66 people in Florida are believed to have been killed by Hurricane Ian

As recovery efforts continued, many challenges remained for the communities impacted by the hurricane. Some rivers that flooded from the rainfall were still impacting areas of the state. Interstate 75 in Sarasota County remained closed in both directions for a 12-mile stretch due to flooding at the Muakka River.
