Important 700-Mile Wide VORTEX to Hit UK-Met Office Warns

Bizarre Silent Lightning Strikes in Britain in Weirdest Storm Ever Seen

Brits were dazzled by 'silent lightning' during bizarre weather across the UK, with the Met Office anticipating further thunderstorms throughout the country today and tomorrow

Met Office issues severe thunderstorms warnings for next five days

Daily Mirror UK, 13 AUG 2020.

Brits were left awe-inspired after watching 'silent lightning' strike across the UK overnight.

Some compared the surreal scenes to a 'silent disco', while others described it as 'the weirdest storm I've ever seen' and 'like something out of Harry Potter'.

The bizarre weather saw the country experience 50,000 lightning strikes within 24 hours, with temperatures soaring above 30C.

The north-west witnessed the worst weather last night after the Met Office predicted almost a month's worth of rain across the region in the space of an hour.

Social media was in a frenzy over the incredible thunderstorms, with videos and pictures being shared under the trending hashtag #waroftheworlds.

Brits are in store for further thunderstorms today and tomorrow after the Met Office issued a yellow warning for the entire country.

Another thunderstorm warning is also in force for England and Wales on Thursday.

Twitter users described last night's displays as 'the weirdest storm' and 'creepy but beautiful' due to the 'silent lightning', which is unique due to its lack of thunder and rain.

However, the Met Office told Mirror Online there was nothing out of the ordinary about the lightning.

Nicola Maxey, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: "It's not an unusual phenomenon. Light travels further than sound. You sometimes see the lightning flash but you are too far away to hear the thunder."

Daniel Walker tweeted: "In Manchester and you can hear nothing. It is the end of the world as we know it.

"Creepy yet beautiful lightning."

Thunderstorms were also seen in North Wales, Wirral, Liverpool, Solihul, Redditch, Prescot and other parts of the country.

Another Twitter user wrote: "Best storm in living memory. 90 minutes silent lightning show and now, my god Mother Nature is p*****.

"Beginning to wonder if Armageddon is a thing after all."

One woman from Redditch shared pictures and video of a dark thundery storm cloud above her, with clear skies around it.

She described the scene as 'like something out of Harry Potter'.

Bethany Calderbank tweeted a clip of the lightning above Liverpool and said it was 'like a silent disco'.

Ryan Woods added: "Witnessing the weirdest lightning storm I've ever seen in my life. No rain, barely any thunder, but almost constant lightning that's been going on for nearly an hour now."

Gareth Clarke also saw the display above this home in Prescot in Merseyside.

He said: "What a fantastic display of lightning from the top floor of my house in Prescot last night. Went on for ages, silent and constant and no rain #MotherNature "

A Twitter user from Preston, Lancashire, added: "Night turned into day last night in the silent storm we had."

The extreme weather also saw Wales hit by flooding and hailstones 'the size of golf balls'.

The community of Capel Curig was hit with hail so heavy it set off car alarms.

The shower was caught on camera by local Jenny Davies, who runs local sport and leisure group Snowdonia Nordic Walking.

The sound of the hail is deafening, as golf-ball sized pellets rain down from the grey sky.

Suddenly, the shower activates the car’s alarm which begins flashing erratically and illuminating the mist.

Downpours sparked flooding in Aberystwyth yesterday as several centimetres of rain hit the town over the course of 20 minutes.

The deluge proved too much for part of Aberyswyth's drainage system, which overflowed.

Photos taken in the town show a large lake of water covering the streets and roads.

The Met Office had predicted thunderstorms for the whole of the UK yesterday after issuing a yellow weather warning.

It had also warned of more than two months' rainfall in just a few hours as heavy downpours washed out the heatwave.

Forecasters even anticipated a "worst-case scenario" of up to 150mm on Monday afternoon and evening in some parts.

Bonnie Diamond, a meteorologist with the Met Office, previously said: "There is a pretty broad warning in place today, but there is another for central UK - the Midlands up to the North West of England to about Cumbria, and into Wales - which we are watching really closely.

What has the weather got in store for you? Check the forecast with our handy tool.

"We are looking at the potential for some thunderstorms there from about 4pm to the early hours.
"It's a worst-case scenario - a caution, really, for what could happen - but we are looking at a potential for 150mm rain in three or four hours.

"Normally for August you're looking at around 70mm for the month, so it's potentially a lot of rain.

"To get that much it will take some areas seeing frequent thunderstorms, and not just passing through."

Movies Re: 700-Mile Wide VORTEX to Hit UK-Met Office Warns

UK Met Office Issues Two-Day Wind Warnings as 700-Mile Wide VORTEX Strikes

Gusts of up to 60mph are expected in England and Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday. High temperatures are expected to be between 16C and 21C. The Environment Agency has also warned of more floods

Daily Mirror UK, 24 AUG 2020.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings as a 700 mile-wide 70mph 'Canadian low pressure vortex' batters the country.

Gusts of up to 60mph are expected in England and Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday.

MeteoGroup said the storm has potential to be named and warned of gusts over 60mph, with more parts hit by severe winds than during Storm Ellen.

The Environment Agency has also warned of more floods.

High temperatures are expected to be between 16C and 21C next week.

The Met Office also forecast frost chilling the Bank Holiday weekend - mainly in the North.

MeteoGroup forecaster Paul Mott said: "There's certainly the chance the storm will be named, especially with potential for the strongest winds to be more widespread than Storm Ellen, and with so many people being on holiday.

“Peak wind gust speeds similar to Elllen are a risk, with 60mph or a bit higher possible in the West.

"The low pressure is coming from just south of Newfoundland. It will be an unpleasant couple of days when it arrives."

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Another deep area of low pressure looks like affecting the UK on Tuesday and Wednesday, with another wet and very windy spell likely.

“It looks particularly unsettled in a changeable week ahead.”

A Met Office forecaster said: "The Bank Holiday weekend should see temperatures near or slightly below average, with potential for frost overnight.

"But it will feel warm in any sunnier spells. The South looks driest."

The Environment Agency said: "Local flooding is possible across England on Tuesday and Wednesday as a result of heavy rain, with local river flooding possible in the North, West and far South."

Some disruption to transport is possible while winds strike the country, with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport likely.

Bus journeys might also be affected, with some journeys taking longer than usual.

It is also likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and large waves.
