A huge waterspout was spotted off the coast of Italy.

It was seen from the port city of Salerno and many locals recorded the action, and took photos of the phenomenon.

The "water tornado" appeared skirting ports and reportedly damaging containers as it finally crossed the shoreline.

Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes, but form when cool unstable air passes over warmer waters, producing vigorous updraughts that can turn into a spinning column of water.

They generally collapse once they move across solid ground.

The Salerno Today said that the spout damaged some containers near the waterfront, but no injuries had been reported.

Back in 2016 a boat full of people was swept up in a powerful waterspout.
