The engineering marvel built to protect the capital from the swollen Thames will close tomorrow.

The Thames Barrier has been operational since 1982 and has controlled the flow of the river from its spot east of the Isles of Dogs.

It will be the 187th time it has closed in its 38 year history.

A red 'danger to life' warning has flagged the River Nidd at Pateley Bridge and Bewerley in north Yorkshire as the river over-tops flood defences.

Storm of the Century Batters UK with 100mph Winds

Storm Ciara's Trail of Chaos: Trains, Planes and even The Queen Couldn't Escape The Mayhem

Worst storm in years hits most of country, closing roads and forcing people to evacuate their homes leaving 20,000 + without power

The Telegraph UK, 10FEB,2020.

More than 20,000 homes are without power and parts of the UK could see blizzards and up to 20cm of snow.

Britain is facing more weather mayhem over the next 48 hours. After Storm Ciara battered the UK with winds of up to 100mph and caused large-scale flooding, widespread travel disruption

Hundreds of flights were grounded yesterday, motorways and main roads shut by fallen trees and trains cancelled and delayed. The Met Office warned that "exceptional" gusts of up to 70mph would strike again today and also issued snow and ice warnings. Network Rail said it expected further disruption to trains as its engineers battled to restore services.

Meanwhile, a British Airways flight propelled by a 265mph tailwind flew from New York to London in under five hours, setting a subsonic passenger jet record. The Boeing 747 landed at Heathrow at 4.43am yesterday after a journey time of just four hours and 56 minutes, and having reached a top speed of 825mph. The flight arrived 102 minutes early. Flights in the opposite direction were taking as much as two and a half hours longer as they battled against the prevailing winds of Storm Ciara.

UK Weather: Storm Dennis to be Worse Than Ciara as it Turns into 'Bomb Cyclone'

Met Office Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said Storm Dennis will turn to a 'bomb cyclone' with a sudden drop of pressure system as it batters the UK this weekend with wet and windy weather

Daily Mirror UK, 15FEB,2020.

Residents were advised not to go close to coastal areas as the Met Office issued 'danger to life' warning

Brits are braced for widespread weather disruption as Storm Dennis closes in and explodes into a 'bomb cyclone' this weekend.

Strong winds of up to 70mph and heavy rain will see road closures and transport delays or cancellations at affected areas.

Network Rail has advised passengers to expect disruption on many routes due to flooding and to allow more time for their journeys.

The formidable Storm Dennis is likely to sweep into the country this weekend as a bomb cyclone, meaning a sudden pressure drop within the storm system and draws hurricane-force winds.

Experts warn flooding could be worse than Storm Ciara last week owing to a "perfect storm" of heavy rain falling on saturated ground.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst told Glasgow Live: "On a slightly more technical definition, it's called rapid cyclogenesis. It's a low pressure system which drops 24 milibars in 24 hours or more.

"An easier way to think of it is, it's a low pressure weather system that drops really quickly."

The storm is expected it between 9am and lunchtime and kick-starts 72 hours of misery.

They have issued eight weather warnings covering most of the UK this weekend -including amber warnings on Saturday over southern Scotland, northern England, Wales and parts of the southwest, saying that flooding could cause a danger to life.

Flooding is likely to happen at low-lying areas (Image: PA)
Power cuts are also expected as the Environment Agency (EA) said flooding is likely to be worse than under last weekend's Storm Ciara due to rain falling on already saturated ground.

Newly-appointed Environment Secretary George Eustice said authorities were "fully focused on ensuring that communities are protected".

The Met Office said the "main areas of concern" on Saturday are north and south-west England and Wales, with the South East bearing the brunt more on Sunday.

Hurricane-force gales up to 70mph will hit over the weekend (Image: PA Archive/PA Images)

As of 11pm on Friday, there were 12 flood warnings - meaning flooding is "expected" - and 141 flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible - in places across the country.

Flood defences are due to be in operation this weekend, with additional temporary flood barriers being installed in Shropshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Surrey.

John Curtin, the Environment Agency's executive director of flood and coastal risk management, said Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire were the areas he was most "concerned" about.

"This (storm) could be a step up from what we have seen before," Mr Curtin said.

"We had a big storm last weekend, (we now have) saturated catchments, snow melt and rainfall, so it is a perfect storm."

More than 500 staff are on active incident duty and 30 mobile pumps have been deployed, the EA said.

Meanwhile, people living near rail lines are being urged to secure any loose items in their gardens, after several trampolines were blown on to tracks and overhead electric wires last weekend, blocking lines.

The storm is also likely to cause treacherous driving conditions, with drivers urged not to attempt entering deep floodwater.

Huge Rainfall in South Wales, Shropshire, Herefordshire Has left Entire Towns Underwater as Residents and Businesses Count The Cost of The Damage.

Police said the storm has led to "serious disruption" as dramatic images show the scale of the flooding

Updated 16 FEB 2020

Four major incidents have been declared in south Wales, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire as towns are devastated by Storm Dennis.

Huge rainfall has left entire towns underwater as residents and businesses count the cost of the damage.

Welsh town Pontypridd has been heavily hit, with residents forced to evacuate their homes due to flood water.

And this afternoon Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire all declared a major incident, urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and to check on their neighbours.

The Met Office had earlier taken the rare step of issuing a red weather warning, saying that lives were being endangered by the extreme conditions.

South Wales Police said some communities have been cut off, with a number of rescues being carried out.

In a statement the force said: "Due to this morning's flooding and severe weather related incident which have occurred overnight and through the course of the morning, a major incident was declared and South Wales Police is coordinating a multi-agency response.

"South Wales Police, on behalf of the local resilience co-ordination group, has declared the major incident in the wake of serious disrution caused by adverse weather across the south Wales region."

The statement continues: "Agencies are continuing to deal with multiple floods and landslides, and have been required to evacuate residents from houses.

"Some communities have been cut-off as a result, but emergency service workers are working tirelessly to put measures in place to ensure the safety of residents.

"Many rescues have been carried out over the past few hours along the evacuation of houses.

"Local authorities across the region have set up emergency centres for residents who have been displaced."

West Mercia Police have warned that the market town of Ludlow is the most seriously affected.

In a statement Herefordshire Council said deep surface flooding has prompted a major incident to be declared.

It said: "Please do not put yourself at unnecessary risk - avoid any unnecessary travel and do not enter flood water.

"Please check on your neighbours, especially if they are elderly or vulnerable. We are concentrating our efforts to ensure vulnerable residents are evacuated where needed and rest centres are being set up for any residents that need to be evacuated."

Mum-of-three Tracey Newman, 46, from Nantgarw, south Wales, said she was woken in the middle of the night to the horrific scene of her flooded house.

She said: “I woke up at 3.45am when I heard water pouring. I thought the washing machine had burst.

A baby is taken to safety after flooding in Nantgarw, Wales (Image: PA)

“I went downstairs and the water was knee-high. Tien, my son, was asleep on the sofa.

"I was screaming and shouting for him to wake up. He waded through the water to get upstairs. It was terrible.

“I phoned the police and they told me to stay indoors, go upstairs and carry as much as you can.

“By now the water was up to my waist. We have lost everything downstairs.

“At this point we heard an almighty bang downstairs. I thought a wall had come down or the house was moving. It must have been furniture falling over."

The Environment Agency's (EA) flood and coastal risk management executive director John Curtin said on Sunday that there were a record 594 flood warnings and alerts in force.

Mr Curtin tweeted: "Breaking: we now have the most flood warnings and alerts in force (594) in England than any other day on record."

Winds of more than 80mph were recorded across parts of the country, with the highest measuring 91mph in Aberdaron in north Wales on Saturday.

Gwent Police said that residents of Skenfrith, Monmouthshire, were being advised to evacuate due to the flooding.

Flights have been grounded for safety reasons, with British Airways and easyJet confirming cancellations.

More than 230 easyJet flights in and out of the UK on Saturday were cancelled, while several sporting fixtures were also called off due to the weather.

Two bodies were pulled from rough seas on Saturday, before the worst of the storm hit.

Communities in the area could also be completely cut off by floodwater for several days, the Met Office warns.

Natural Resources Wales has issued 76 flood warnings for the area.
Homes and businesses have been hit-hard in south Wales. One resident said a member of her family had lost everything as the river ruined her shop.

“Absolutely devastating to see what has happened in Pontypridd. I can only speak about my auntie's devastation at losing her livelihood and everything she has built up throughout her life, her shop is in Mill St.”

Update Re: Storms Leave UK Looking Like Zombie Apocalypse

Devastating Storms Leave area Looking Like 'Zombie Apocalypse Horror Film'

EXCLUSIVE: David Throup, of the Environment Agency, said that Tenbury Wells was like a 'zombie apocalypse' after Storms Ciara and Dennis and 'people were in tears, in shock'

Daily Mirror UK •23 Feb 2020

Devastating storms left one area looking like a scene from a horror film, according to a seasoned flooding expert.

David Throup, of the Environment Agency, said that Tenbury Wells, Worcs, was like a “zombie apocalypse” after being hit by storms Ciara and Dennis.

He said: “People were in tears, in shock, returning to their shops and homes which were covered in mud and rubbish.

“It was just a horrible, horrible sight to see the reaction on people’s faces. I’ve seen quite a few of our staff very shocked and in tears about what is going on.”

Mr Throup, 54, the agency’s manager for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, has been protecting homes for more than 20 years.

He was speaking after the forecast more torrential rain, gales and snow this week, along with further flooding for his patch.

Mr Throup described the horror when he saw river levels, monitored by the agency’s 1,000 staff, reach “unheard-of” levels.

He said: “It came up four metres in four or five hours. I thought ‘dear God, something bad is happening here’.

“For the first time since I’ve been dealing with floods, I was scared. I thought that people could be seriously hurt or killed.”

He fears that climate change, the “intensive” use of agricultural land and building on flood plains, signal worse to come.

Mr Throup wants to see more education, better defences and land use issues being addressed.

He said: “There is no flood season any more – it can happen any time.
“You warm the world and the atmosphere gets more volatile and wetter.”
