The tremor struck at 3.54am, causing scenes of chaos across the country as buildings collapsed and people fled for their lives. The 6-4-magnitude tremor struck at 3.54am, sparking scenes of chaos as people ran for their lives while others were left trapped under collapsed buildings. Footage posted on social media showed what appeared to be a levelled building in Durres, 40 km west of the capital Tirana, on the Adriatic coast. Other videos showed buildings with large cracks and fallen masonry, including one apartment with most of a bedroom wall missing. One person died after jumping out of a window in the town of Kurbin during the tremor, the spokesman added. The Defence Ministry had said it was the most powerful quake in Albania in the last 30 years. The Balkan nation is the poorest country in Europe, with an average income of less than a third of the European Union average, according to Eurostat data.
