Australia Earthquake: Beach Resort Hit by 6.6 Magnitude Tremor
The quake hit west of Broome, Western Australia, at a depth of 21 miles, the United States Geological Survey said this morning Daily Mirror UK, 14 July 2019. Western Australia has rocked by its strongest earthquake in more than 30 years after a 6.6 magnitude tremor close to a popular beach resort. It struck west of Broome, the United States Geological Survey said this morning. The quake caused panic as people ran outside amid fears of building collapsing, and tremors were reportedly felt as far away as Indonesia. There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties. The undersea earthquake struck between Port Headland and Broome, in the Indian Ocean. The USGC said it hit at a depth of 21 miles, about 126 miles offshore from the town in the state of Western Australia. ![]() The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9, experts said this morning ![]() The quake struck off the coast of Broome in Western Australia (Image: Getty Images) Pictures show debris strewn around in the aftermath of the quake, which happened shortly before 3.40pm local time. No tsumani warning has been issued. Initially it was reported as having a 6.9 magnitude, which would have made it the strongest quake in recent history in Australia. The previous worst was in Tennant Creek in January 1988, which was 6.6 on the Richter Scale. No one was injured in the quake 30 years ago, although damage to buildings cost more than $2 million to repair.
