Two months in to living in their dream home and tucked up together on the sofa watching TV, Justin and Amber Hicks had everything to live for including their beautiful son Jacob.
But a normal Friday night turned into complete horror as the happily married couple were murdered by an intruder who crept into their home. According to investigators, their beloved toddler, spared from the same unthinkable fate, was left to roam around the bloodied aftermath for 12 hours, alone and desperate for his parents to wake up.
Justin and Amber were watching the telly, with no idea that there was someone lurking on the outside of their home, jurors heard. It would be the last moments they spent together before they were both shot, with the killer leaving little Jacob behind. The person who stands accused of the family massacre is the familys neighbour, Matthew Scott Lanz.
At around 10 p.m. that night, this familys worst nightmare came true, the prosecutors said. The back window was broken into. The Hicks were unaware. They were defenseless. They were executed. Jurors heard that the saw his parents get murdered. The family dog was also in the house.
According to the prosecution, the state has evidence that after the shooting, the toddler tried to cuddle with his parents and even tried to play as they laid lifeless on the sofa. Several. of Jacobs toys were allegedly discovered on and around his dads body.
Lanz is facing charges over the 2021 murders in Cherokee County, Gerogia. As well as murder charges, he is also facing one count of cruelty to children.
Lanz is accused of causing the boy physical and mental pain because the child was alone for 12 hours, unable to feed himself, change his diaper, or get the attention of his parents. Thankfully when police found the child, he was physically unharmed.
Friends of the murdered couple say that they were thrilled to have found their dream home. Justin was a beloved firefighter in Cherokee County.
A few days after the killing, police arrested Lanz after he allegedly broke into a Sandy Springs residence. When officers arrived, Lanz reportedly stabbed one several times in the neck and back before Lanz was shot by another cop
The case has been delayed numerous times over questions surrounding Lanzs competency to stand trial. In October, a court heard that Lanz suffered from schizophrenia but a judge found him competent to stand trial, arguing that interviews showed Lanz appeared to have the capacity to make rational decisions

Lanzs lawyers say their client believes that he has been set up by either the FBI, CIA, or some government agency. Lanz had been arrested in April 2021 in connection with a break in at the home the Hicks family later bought.
