A 25-year-old prison officer has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a stabbing at a high security prison.

Emergency teams were called to HMP Long Lartin in South Littleton, near Evesham, Worcestershire, on Friday just before 08:40 BST.

A member of staff was hurt in the attack and taken to hospital where they were in a stable condition, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson confirmed. West Mercia Police said they were investigating the stabbing by an inmate, who remained in the jail, and a weapon had been recovered.

Crews found a man who they treated for serious injuries before he was airlifted to hospital for further treatment, a spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

The officer taken to hospital suffered a stab wound in the attack, the police forces spokesperson added. The inmate remains within the prison and the investigation is ongoing, they added. The high security mens prison houses more than 600 prisoners.

The jail is known to hold some of the UKs most notorious criminals including Thomas Cashman, who murderered nine year old Olivia Pratt Korbel.

Seven drones have been seized and 18 people arrested as part of targeted efforts to detect and disrupt drones in the airspace over HMP Long Lartin, and surrounding villages.

There are currently nine separate on going investigations in which 18 people have been arrested and since bailed or released under investigation, and seven drones have been seized.

It follows widespread outrage over a spate of attacks in highsecurity jails.

A Prison Service spokesperson added: We will not tolerate assaults on hardworking staff and will always push for the strongest punishments against perpetrators.
