Driver in custody after police confirm a number of people killed and several injured at Filipino festival

Police said there were multiple deaths and several people were injured in the incident at the Filipino festival on Fraser Street and 41st Avenue on Saturday evening.
The Asian driver was taken into custody after a horrific act of violence
The incident happened shortly after 8pm local time on Saturday evening 4am UK time on Sunday as crowds celebrated Lapu Lapu Day, a traditional Filipino event.
Video from the scene appeared to show a damaged black SUV and bodies scattered across the road, with food trucks and market stalls either side.
One clip showed what appeared to be a man of Asian heritage being detained in the immediate aftermath, telling those around him he was sorry. Sources told the Vancouver Sun that he appeared to be suffering from mental health issues.
Ken Sim, mayor of Vancouver, confirmed there had been multiple fatalities and many more injured. He said: Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouvers Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.
Yoseb Vardeh, the co owner of food truck Bao Buns, told local media the final festival performance had just ended when the SUV came from the direction of a nearby high school.
He said it drove past a number of market vendors, and sped up before driving down 43rd Avenue, where the food trucks were stationed.
I got outside my food truck, I looked down the road and theres just bodies everywhere, said Mr Vardeh, his voice breaking. He went through the whole block, he went straight down the middle.
Mr Vardeh added that he was unsure how the truck was stopped. He said he saw a man being arrested and telling bystanders to stop filming him.
