Nicholas Prosper who killed his mother and two siblings was also planning to commit a mass shooting at his former primary school, police have confirmed.
Nicholas Prosper shot dead Juliana Falcon, 48, Kyle Prosper, 16, and 13-year-old Giselle Prosper at their home in Luton in September.
The 19-year-old intended to carry out an attack at the school and a loaded shotgun with more than 30 cartridges was found in a bush after his arrest, police said.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of murder at Luton Crown Court on Monday.
Det Ch Insp Sam Khanna, from Bedfordshire Police, said fortunately Prosper was apprehended before he could cause any further harm
This was a truly tragic and shocking case in which three innocent members of the same family have been brutally killed by their son and brother, said Det Ch Insp Sam Khanna.
What was subsequently uncovered during our investigation left no doubt as to his intentions to carry out an attack at a school.
Speaking outside court, he added that his team was in shock and disbelief when they learned of his plans to target St Josephs Catholic Primary School in Luton.
Prosper answered guilty to all six charges at Luton Crown Court

Maureen Murphy, the head teacher at St Josephs, said in a statement that all the children from the family had attended the school and had been a cherished part of its community. She said parents could be reassured there was no threat to the school and that robust safety systems were in place.
Officers were called to the family flat in Leabank, off Wauluds Bank Drive, at about 05:30 BST after a concerned neighbour said they heard a disturbance.
An inquest at Bedford Coroners Court in October was told that all three of the victims died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Prosper was arrested shortly after and the firearm was found in the bushes during a search of the surrounding area. Prosper is on remand at HMP Peterborough

The family home in Luton was turned into a bloody crime scene when the ruthless teen 19, blasted his mother, Juliana Falcon 48, with a shotgun before turning the firearm on his terrified younger sibling Giselle 13, as she hid under a table.
His brother Kyle 16, was stabbed in a frenzied attack and had more than 100 knife wounds.
Prosper had placed a novel called How To Kill Your Family by his mothers legs.
His murderous plans to slaughter 30 children at his former primary school in a bid to become Britain's worst mass killer was 'prevented by chance and circumstance alone'.
He was spotted on the roadside by a passing police car that stopped to investigate after he held a bloodied fist aloft in a kind of salute.
Yesterday Prospers father said in a harrowing victim impact statement that part of my soul died on the day of the killings.
He said: The pain of our loss will never be healed. This includes my whole family our lives will never be the same.
The court heard today Prosper wanted to be famous as the biggest mass murderer in the world.
After killing his mother and siblings he set off towards his old primary school armed with a loaded shotgun, a kitchen knife and a bag of ammunition, to continue his killing spree.
He intended to shoot at least 30 of the youngest pupils and teachers at St Josephs Catholic Primary School as the school day started at 9am. But Prosper was stopped by police by chance as he was on his way to carry out the school massacre, his hands still covered in blood.
The killing spree took place on September 13 last year. The defendant first gunned down his mother Juliana, shooting her with a single shot to the top of her head as she attempted to fight off her son, with her bloodied body later found in the hallway.
