The gunman has been named as Mehemed Vukalić

At least three teachers have been killed during a meeting after a gunman, believed to be the school's former janitor, entered the building and opened fire using an automatic rifle.

The gunman, named locally as Mehemed Vukalić, is understood to have ambushed the teachers inside a the Sanski Most Gymnasium - the town's secondary school in north west Bosnia - at about 10:15am local time. No children were inside the school at the time of the shooting as they are closed for the summer holidays.

Adnan Beganović, a spokesperson for the government's Interior Ministry, confirmed three people had died and that another person was injured in the shooting. He said: "According to the information so far, three people have died, while one person has sustained physical injuries, and his transport to the University Clinical Center of the Republic of Srpska [and area in Bosnia] is underway."

School director Nijaz Halilović was named as one of the victims

The victims have been named locally as school director and local politician Nijaz Halilović, English teacher Gordana Midžan and Nisveta Kljunić. They are understood to have died at the scene of the shooting.

Their bodies have been transported to the Sanski Most Health Centre, according to local reports. Unconfirmed reports have named Vukalić is understood to have suffered a self-inflicted injury to his chest but that he survived the attempt on his own life. It is understood he was in a dispute with school management.

Outlet Etto, reported Vukalić had been transported to a nearby hospital. It is understood he will recover from his injuries.
