Pickton deliberately targeted vulnerable women

An evil serial killer who lured women to his filthy pig farm ground up his victims' flesh to sell as mincemeat - and wasn't caught for years.

Robert Pickton gained brutal hands-on experience at his family's pig farm from an early age, where he honed a grim talent for butchery. After dropping out of school at the age of 14, bullied and ostracised Pickton found work as a butcher's apprentice, before returning to work on the farm.

By all accounts, Pickton enjoyed his bloody line of work and displayed a morbid sense of humour when it came to the business of slaughtering. In the grim 2011 documentary The Pig Farm, one associate recalled: "If he'd been slaughtering pigs, he'd chase you around with the entrails. He made a belt out of a pig penis."

After inheriting the Port Coquitlam farm in Canada in the 1970s, Pickton - known as 'Willie' to pals - would take in those down on their luck and offer them odd jobs in exchange for cash and shelter. However, his hospitality towards troubled drug addicts and sex workers was anything but benevolent.

Indeed, evil Pickton would make the approximately 17-mile journey to downtown Vancouver, where he targeted women he knew to be vulnerable including marginalised individuals from Indigenous communities. He would then take them back to his farm, where he would rape and murder them before disposing of their remains in the most despicable ways imaginable.

Vancouver police later faced criticism for not taking the disappearances of dozens of women in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 1997, when one victim managed to escape to tell the tale of how Pickton had cuffed her and stabbed her four times, Pickton was charged with four offences, including attempted murder. However, these were dropped as it was believed the survivor's known history of drug use would undermine her case.

As reported by CBC News, after years of pressure from local activists, a joint Vancouver police-RCMP investigation was eventually launched in April 2001, with the net closing in on Pickford by February 2002.

A search of Pickford's farm, trailer and freezers uncovered the partial remains of Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Marnie Frey, Georgina Papin and Brenda Wolfe, stashed in buckets and bins.

RCMP began a search on the property, known to locals as "Piggys Palace" as part of a continuing investigation of the 50 women who disappeared from the Vancouver area over the past two decades.

Tragically, there were further horrors in store, with evidence presented at court indicating that Pickton had fed his victims directly to the pigs, and had likely ground up some human flesh into mincemeat, which he mixed in with pork products sold to the public. Although detectives found the DNA of 33 women at the farm, as well as various pieces of jewellery and personal items, they didn't find one intact body.

Doug Mackay-Dunn, a staff sergeant, described it as 'one of the most horrendous crime scenes any of them had ever investigated. Individuals in that investigation will have nightmares until the day they die. They will never be the same again'.

In 2018 documentary Voice of a Serial Killer aired footage of unsuspecting Pickton bragging about his crimes to an undercover officer while banged up in a police cell, claiming that he'd only gotten caught because he'd become 'sloppy'.

He also confessed to the murders of 49 women, admitting he wished he'd been able to make it an even 50 before his capture.

Pickton was first convicted of killing six women in 2007 and given life imprisonment. He was then charged with the killing of an additional 20 victims in 2010.

Speaking at a press conference, British Columbia Premier David Eby stated: "I want to take a moment to reflect on the fact that Robert Pickton preyed on the most vulnerable people in our society. Our focus needs to continue to be to recognize the human dignity of every single person in this province, to make sure that everyone is valued and welcomed. And good riddance.â€
