Eight people including children have been wounded by a knifeman during a stabbing spree in Southport this morning. Armed police officers detained a man and seized a knife after the attack that left multiple people wounded in Southport, Merseyside.
Officers urged people to avoid the area around Hart Street but said there was 'no wider threat' to the public.
A staff member at The Bridge Cafe on Hart Street told MailOnline: 'We were told somebody's been stabbing children.
'It's chocka. It's all cordoned off, police cars at every junction. Parents are stood outside waiting.'
North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) sent 13 ambulances, specialised resources of its Hazardous Area Response Team, Air Ambulance and Merit Doctors to the scene.
It said: 'So far, NWAS has treated eight patients with stab injuries who have been taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby hospital.' Merseyside Police said: 'We can confirm that emergency services are in Southport following a major incident this morning, Monday, 29 July. 'We're assessing the situation and working with emergency partners.'

The three girls who were killed in a "ferocious" knife attack at a children's dance workshop have been named by police.
Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, died after the attack at a Taylor Swift-themed event on Hart Street, Southport, on Monday.
Five children and two adults who were also injured remain in a critical condition.
Bebe’s family said "no words" could describe the "devastation that has hit our family", while Alice's parents said she would always be "our princess and no-one would change that".

Merseyside Police said a 17-year-old boy, from Banks in Lancashire, who was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder remains in custody.
The force said the families of the girls, who were being supported by specialist officers, had asked for their privacy to be "respected at this time".
In a tribute from her "Hero Daddy and Mummy", Alice's parents said: "Keep smiling and dancing like you love to do, our princess.
In a statement, Bebe's family said "no words" could describe "the devastation that has hit our family as try to deal with the loss of our little girl".
Tributes have also been paid to yoga teacher, Leanne Lucas, thought to be 35, who the BBC understands was running the summer holiday dance and yoga class.

Rudakubana, now 17, appeared in court on Thursday charged with murdering Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, at a dance studio in Southport, Merseyside.
Footage unearthed shows Axel Rudakubana, then 11, emerging from the Tardis in David Tennants' trademark trenchcoat and tie - before urging the nation to help children by getting involved in fundraising.
The clip featuring Rudakubana, filmed in Blackpool in 2018, was deleted earlier today by both the BBC and the Ology child talent agency that represented him.
A source at the corporation said: ‘Children in Need has no relationship to Axel Rudakubana.
'The individual was contracted by the BBC for the campaign video through a casting agency in 2018 and has never had an affiliation with any of our funded projects.’

He is also accused of ten attempted murders, including those of eight more children as well as dance teacher Leanne Lucas, 35, and businessman John Hayes, who ran to help at the scene.
The teenager's identity initially could not be revealed because suspects under 18 receive automatic anonymity in all UK court cases, except for in exceptional circumstances.
But after a successful application to the judge by the Mail, the identity of Rudakubana – who turns 18 next week - can now be reported.
With those reporting restrictions lifted, MailOnline can reveal that he appeared on a 45-second BBC clip telling viewers 'It's that time of year again' before advising on how best to raise money for Children In Need including dressing 'as every Doctor Who ever'.
He also told viewers 'You can run from John O'Groats to Land's End – backwards' in the promo, which featured Pudsey Bear.
Rudakubana was at the time on the books of Ology Kids Casting based in Ormskirk, Lancashire - close to Southport.
The talent agency - which is co-run by Laura Beckford, wife of former Everton footballer Jermaine Beckford, and her older brother Andrew - declined to comment, but managers are understood to be ‘very upset’ at learning of the association.
The agency last night deleted a series of Facebook posts about Axel's budding acting career.
As well as amateur dramatics, he was also said to be keen on singing, with neighbours in the village of Banks, near Southport, revealing he was part of a local church choir.
A BBC Children in Need spokesperson: 'Our deepest sympathies go out to everyone impacted by this shocking case, and we have removed the video from all of our platforms out of respect to them.'
In a bid to quell tensions - after more riots broke out in London, Manchester Hartlepool, and Aldershot - Judge Menary revealed Rudakubana's identity.
He will next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on October 25 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
Until then he will be remanded in youth accommodation detention.

The suspect in the Southport murders was today charged with making the deadly poison ricin. Axel Rudakubana, 18, has also been charged with having a study of a terrorist manual after one was found at his home, police said.
The teenager is accused of murdering three young girls - Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine ? in a stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in July. He is also accused of ten attempted murders and possession of a knife.
The killings sparked large scale riots, fuelled by misinformation on social media, in towns and cities across the UK.
Today Serena Kennedy, the Chief Constable of Merseyside police, said the Crown Prosecution Service had authorised them to charge Rudakubana with manufacturing the biological toxin ricin and having a study of a terrorist manual ? namely Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants: The Al-Qaeda Training Manual.

The Mail has learnt that authorities knew of Rudakubanas disturbing interest in a school massacre as far back as 2019.
He was referred to the Governments de-radicalisation scheme Prevent that year on the basis that he had been researching for information about the killing of children in school shootings.
It was reported he was also referred twice in 2021 after viewing material about the 2017 London terror attack.
But experts deemed that there was no counter-terrorism risk at the time as he was considered not to be motivated by a terrorist ideology.

Southport killer Axel Rudakubana was personally linked through his parents to the Rwandan genocide, an event that is said to have fascinated him.
The 18-year-old, who today pleaded guilty to the murder of three girls at a dance class in Southport on day one of his trial, was raised by two church-going Rwandan parents in Cardiff before the family moved to the north west of England.
Rudakubana was absolutely obsessed with genocide, one official was quoted as saying, adding that the subject was 'all he wanted to talk about'. Documents relating to the atrocity were found in his family home.
The killer has a connection to the genocide in Rwanda through his parents, who were both Tutsi and were forced to flee the country following the outbreak of mass killings by the Hutu-dominated regime.
His taxi driver father, Alphonse, is thought to have fought with the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), an armed force that fought the Hutu government and eventually brought an end to the murders.
The 49-year-old is said to have been an officer in the RPA, which invaded from nearby Uganda.
The Rwandan genocide saw an estimated one million people shot, beaten or hacked to death with machetes during just over 100 days of violence that broke out in the east African nation in 1994.
The killings were sparked by the death of Hutu President Juvenal Habyariman, whose plane was shot down on the night of April 6, triggering a rampage by Hutu extremists and the Interahamwe militia.

Southport killer Axel Rudakubana has been jailed for a minimum of 52 years despite pleas from victims families for a whole-life sentence.
Sentencing Rudakubana, Mr Justice Goose said that had he been 18 at the time, he would have been impelled to impose a whole life term meaning he would never be released
He added: However, the law does not permit such a sentence for those under 18 at the time that they committed the offence
The now 18-year-old was sentenced in his absence at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday after indicating he would be disruptive if he was present in the courtroom.
Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, died in the attack.
Rudakubana also attempted to murder EIGHT other children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, class instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.

Police Investigate After Murderer Allegedly Threw Boiling Water Over Guard at HMP Belmarsh

The Southport killer Axel Rudakubana attacked a prison officer at HMP Belmarsh. Rudakubana is believed to have thrown boiling water over a guard at the prison in southeast London on Thursday.
The officer was taken to nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich as a precaution and is expected to return to work next week. Officers were alerted to the guards screams and restrained Rudakubana.
Scotland Yard confirmed it was investigating the attack.
A Met spokesman said: The Met is investigating after a prison officer was subject to a serious assault at HMP Belmarsh on the afternoon of Thursday, 8 May.
Violence in prison will not be tolerated and we will always push for the strongest possible punishment for attacks on our hard working staff.
Rudakubana was jailed for a minimum of 52 years in January after admitting the murders of Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9, Bebe King, 6, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, at a Taylor Swift themed dance class in Southport on July 29 last year.
He was handed 13 life sentences for three murders and 10 attempted murders and told he would not be eligible to apply for parole for 52 years, by which time he will be 70.
Rudakubana, 18, also pleaded guilty to producing a biological toxin, ricin, and the possession of an al Qaeda training manual an offence under the Terrorism Act.
He avoided a whole life sentence because he was nine days too young.

However, Mr Justice Goose, who sentenced Rudakubana at Liverpool Crown Court, said he would almost certainly spend the rest of his life in prison.
The alleged attack at HMP Belmarsh comes just weeks after Hashem Abedi, the brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, allegedly attacked three prison officers at HMP Frankland in County Durham.
Abedi is alleged to have attacked the officers with weapons and cooking oil and left two of them with life threatening injuries.
He was moved to Belmarsh following the alleged attack.
